o Heroin and morphine are drugs from the opiate group.
o Morphine is an alkaloid derived from thepoppyplant, Papaver somniferum.
o Morphine is commonly used as an analgesic drug to relieve pain. Heroin is

also known as diamorphine. Heroin is a synthetic drug produced by adding
two groups of acetyl to the morphine structure.
o Heroin and morphine are among the drugs that are commonly abused in
Malaysia.
o Heroin and morphine are listed in the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which
ban the cultivation, production, distribution, import, export, possession and
abuse.

Cocaine

o Cocaine is a powerful stimulant that is used legally as a local anesthetic for
some eye, ear, and throat surgeries.

o Cocaine is also called coke, C, snow, flake, or blow.
o It may contain other substances, such as cornstarch, talcum powder, or

sugar.
o It may also contain other drugs, such as another local anesthetic called

procaine or a stimulant such as amphetamine.

Hallucinogen

o Hallucinogens are a diverse group of drugs that alter a person’s awareness
of their surroundings as well as their own thoughts and feelings.

o They are commonly split into two categories: classic hallucinogens (such as
LSD) and dissociative drugs (such as PCP).

o Both types of hallucinogens can cause hallucinations, or sensations and
images that seem real though they are not.

o Some hallucinogens are extracted from plants or mushrooms, and some are
synthetic (human-made).

o More recently, people report using these drugs for social or recreational
purposes, including to have fun, deal with stress, have spiritual experiences,
or just to feel different.

Stimulant

o Stimulants are a class of drugs that speed up messages travelling between
the brain and body.

o They can make a person feel more awake, alert, confident or energetic.
o Stimulants include caffeine, nicotine, amphetamines and cocaine.
o Large doses can cause over-stimulation, resulting in anxiety, panic, seizures,

headaches, stomach cramps, aggression and paranoia.
o Long-term use of strong stimulants can have adverse effects.
o Illicit stimulants are usually snorted, swallowed, smoked or injected.
o Prescribed stimulants are usually taken orally, and the duration of their

effects differs depending on the type.

Psychoactive Drugs

o Psychoactive drugs are substances that, when taken in or administered into
one's system, affect mental processes.

o For example, perception, consciousness, cognition or mood and emotions.
o Psychoactive drugs belong to a broader category of psychoactive

substances that include also alcohol and nicotine.
o “Psychoactive” does not necessarily imply dependence-producing, and in

common parlance, the term is often left unstated, as in “drug use”,
“substance use” or “substance abuse”.

Legal and Illegal

05Drugs

Legal Drugs

Some drugs – such as alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine – are legal but may be subject to
restrictions based on age, location of use, driving and point of sale regulations.
We regulate and control the active ingredients in legal drugs:
• the alcohol content of drinks
• the milligrams of nicotine in cigarettes.

Illegal Drugs

● Other drugs such as cannabis, amphetamines, ecstasy, cocaine and heroin, are illegal. They
are not subject to quality or price controls and the amount of active ingredient varies. A
person using illegal drugs can never be sure of how strong the drug is, or what is actually in
it.

● Different batches of an illegally manufactured drug may have different amounts of the drug
and other unidentified additives.

● It is against the law to possess, use, make, import or sell illegal drugs. The penalties for drug
offences vary depending on the age of the offender (adult or minor), type of drug,
quantities involved, previous offences, and the state or territory in which the offence
happened.

Spiritual and

06Religious Use

Spritual and Religious Use

● Some religions, particularly ethnic religions, are based completely on the use of certain
drugs, known as entheogens, which are mostly hallucinogens, psychedelics, dissociatives,
or deliriants.

● Some drugs used as entheogens include kava which can act as a stimulant, a sedative,
a euphoriant and an anesthetic.

● The roots of the kava plant are used to produce a drink which is consumed throughout the
cultures of the Pacific Ocean.

“There is not a drug
on Earth that can make life

meaningful.”
