HISTORY OF MALAY COLLEGE KUALA KANGSAR
Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) is the first fully residential school in Malaysia. FIGURE 1:
Established on 2 January 1905, it was originally known as the Malay Residential School of Kuala Adult Education Campaign. Prize - Giving Ceremony By The Deputy

ACCESSION NUMBER:
Its formation was supported by the rulers of the Federated Malay States: Sultan Idris 2001/0028808W
Murshidul ‘Adzam Shah I of Perak, Sultan Alaiddin Sulaiman Shah of Selangor, Yam Tuan Tuanku
Muhammad Shah of Negeri Sembilan and Sultan Ahmad Mu’adzam Shah of Pahang. W Hargreaves,
the headmaster of Penang Free School, was appointed as the first headmaster to lead the establishment
of the school with 40 pioneering students. Since 1965, the Malay College has been led by Malay
headmasters. As it was founded to educate the Malay elite, being royal children and the sons of Malay
nobility and a few of its early students were from the commoner families. However, during Tun Abdul
Razak Hussein tenure as Minister of Education in 1947, as a result of rising Malay nationalism, he
democratized the intake. It is obviously because of his experience as an alumnus there, where he found
out the aristocrats that gained admittance to this college were mainly below par compared to their less-
privileged peers in Victoria Institution and Raffles Institution. Their status as aristocrats had caused
them to not be independent and to have no willingness to strive for a better future.

building of a permanent school became official on 23 December 1905; by 1 May 1909, the Big School ACCESSION NUMBER :
was first brought into use. On Saturday, 11 December 1909, the Big School was officially opened by
the Sultan of Perak, and the auspicious date also marked the change in the name of the school from the 1957/0285177W
Malay Residential School of Kuala Kangsar to the Malay College of Kuala Kangsar. The change
seems to have seen greater emphasis on the original aim of MCKK.
Since its inception, more than 5,000 boys (and 2 girls) have entered the gates of MCKK.
The first Malay College Magazine was published in 1939. The compulsory white uniforms were
introduced in 1949, before that, the students wore Malay dress. The Kolet samping designed and
woven in Terengganu consisting of black, yellow and red (with resultant overlapping colours) was
introduced in 1939 to be worn with white Malay baju, seluar and black kopiah was made the optional
Malay uniform. It was only made compulsory in 1959 by the last British Headmaster, NJ Ryan.
Following the introduction of Squash in 1938, Eton Fives popularity began to lose.

Selangor and Negeri Sembilan as well as the governor of Malacca. In the meantime, the college was also proclaimed as the

AGE OF MCKK BUILDING
The most recognizable feature of the school is the Big School (built in 1909), a building with pseudo
Greco-Roman architecture fronted by a rugby field. The school is built to accommodate 100 students initially, but in
1910, there were 139 boys in the School Register, 124 of them boarders. Thus, the planning for the construction of
the Preparatory School was considered and it was referred to as the Sekolah Kechil. The block was completed by
1913 when it took in its first boarders. It was then referred to as the Prep school. It admitted boys who had
completed Standard 4 and were being “prepared” for their secondary school boarding experience by completing their
Standard 5 and Form Remove at the Prep School.

Institution of Culture and Country.
On 10 June 2006, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan visited the school. The monarchs had promised to visit the school in the 1990s. Since 30 May
2007, the Malaysian Ministry of Education has recognized MCKK as a cluster school. Moreover, the school has been selected to be among the first High Performing Schools
(Sekolah Berprestasi Tinggi) in 2010 while in 2013, the Prep School celebrated its centenary. MCKK has also hosted 2 international events, which are The Malay College Youth
Development Summit since 2008 until now and The Malay College Rugby Premier Sevens since 2011. Both events consist of international schools across the globe such as India,

TRADITION AND
HERITAGE
TRADITION AND HERITAGE
Malay College Kuala Kangsar have their own tradition and heritage. This were practised since a few generation. The
tradition mainly followed by students there because it has been a tradition that need to be followed.
One of the tradition is wearing of one of two forms of the school tie every Wednesday by the old boys. FIGURE 7:
The tradition revolutionized from time to time according to relevancy of the time. As a cluster school, it is important Malay College Kuala Kangsar, Prefect, (1911-1914); 1914
for the school to maintain their high reputation. The school also specialized in debate, rugby and basketball. The
school has also hosted 2 international events, which are The Malay College Youth Development Summit since 2008 ACESSION NUMBER : 2001/0026689W
until now, and The Malay College Rugby Premier Sevens since 2011. Both events consist of international schools
across the globe such as India, Singapore, South Korea and Australia.
Other than that, the other tradition is the annual gathering lasting around three days at the school. It is
referred as Old Boys Weekend. During the weekend, matches are held for any number of sports between the Old
Boys and present student, as rugby match held on Sunday morning.
Next is the annual formal dinner for old boys, usually held in ballroom in Kuala Lumpur. The dinner includes all the alumni of the school as a medium to bond all of the
alumni of the school. As for Tuesday, co-curicular activities are held. Uniformed bodies and societies are the two types co-curicular activities that complimentary to all student in the
school. Student are required to wear their uniformed body uniforms nonetheless no matter activities are held in that day. So, Tuesday is the co-curicular day that required student to wear
the uniform as mandatory. There were several uniformed bodies in the school. They are Malay College Band, Persatuan Kadet Bersatu Malaysia, Malay Red Crescent Society ( PBSM ),
Scout, Malaysian Fire Brigade Cadet and Kadet Remaja Sekolah Malaysia.
8
The other tradition and heritage of the school is school cheering where almost every student is required to sing in unison of various fight song during official sport matches
while wearing a specially designed polo shirt. As the school are active in participating the sport such as rugby and basketball, each of the student need to cheered for their school
sport team.
Rugby was the game in MCKK even then and the New Zealand All Blacks were everybody’s favourite team, and their hakka was thus imitated. We had several
rugby players and Joe Bake (Abu Bakar Awang Ngah) introduced the hakka idea for the rugby team. Khalid Hassan and Bahar Mansor took the initiative to ‘compose’ the
version of the hakka, producing the FFS War Cry for MCKK team to perform before the start of the game and the supporters to do it from the stands.

This song was later adopted by the rugby team before they start their game and MCKK used it when MCKK cheered the school teams, especially rugby, of
course. The “FFS” was replaced with “Malay College”. The Fifth Form Cheering Squad, having featured in school matches at home, went on its first outstation ‘assignment’ to
cheer the school’s Soccer team in the match against Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR) in Ipoh, but MCKK lost 3-1. Thus, the MCKK Bung Wak Cheer took shape and
since then it has become the MCKK Official cheering ‘anthem’.

NOTABLE
ALUMNI
NOTABLE ALUMNI
It was established in 1929. In 2009, the association enrolls its first non-Malay member, Liew Yong Choon. To this date, seven Yang di-Pertuan Agong out of
thirteen that have resided the throne were its alumnus (including a Lord President of the Supreme Court) and a Sultan of Brunei. Out of the four states that have Yang di-
Pertua Negeri, two states have had at least one alumnus reside in office. The father of Malay nationalism and the founder of Malaysia’s largest party is also an alumnus. A
Prime Minister and a Deputy Prime Minister (who later on become Leader of the Opposition) received their education in the college. The college also has produced two
Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat. The college’s Old Boys also gain their presence in economy, education, law, armed forces and art. Some of the notable teachers there were
Pendeta Za’Ba and Anthony Burgess.
The novelist and composer Anthony Burgess (1917–93), author of The Long Day Wanes:
A Malayan Trilogy, was a master at MCKK. He taught English and history and was
housemaster at King’s Pavilion, between 1956 and 1957, during the headmastership of
J.D.R. “Jimmy” Howell. According to Burgess’ This Man & Music, he wrote some music
there under the influence of the country, notably Sinfoni Melayu for orchestra and brass
band, which included cries of Merdeka (independence) from the audience. No score of
any, however, has been delivered to posterity.

ABOUT MCOBA
The Old College of Malay College (MCOBA) has existed for the past 88 years. It is 24 years after the
Malay Residential School (then known as the Malay College Kuala Kangsar) opened its doors to the
first group of students. About 150 Old Boys from Malay College descended from all over the country to
pay homage to their beloved alma mater on a good day in March 1929. The Old Boys unanimously
agreed to form The Malay College Old Boys Association (MCOBA) . On March 16, 1929, the Old
Boys unanimously agreed to establish The Malay College Old Boys Association (MCOBA) on the
school board. The founding president of the MCOBA is Raja Musa bin Raja Bhot.
On July 31, 1938, the Seventh Annual Dinner was held at The Sultan Sulaiman Club, Kuala Lumpur. FIGURE 14:
According to the Annual Report of the Association, its membership is 184. The association has agreed Old Boy’s Association Malay College Kuala Kangsar (Mckk), Tun Abdul Razak
to hold activities for the year including tennis, football tournaments and dinner (attended by 74 people)
held at Hotel Majestic, Kuala Lumpur. 29 members including the President, Datuk Sheikh Ahmad bin Attend Dinner, Kuala Lumpur.

the MCOBA and King Tun Uda Raja Muhammad (1908-1913) was elected as the new President.
15
The MCOBA file at the Registrar of Societies states that in 1955, the President was Tunku Yaakob ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdul Hamid (1912-1918) and the Vice
President was Dato’ Ahmad bin Osman (1913-1919). In 1960, the Association was rejuvenated and the Old Boys re-established contact with the Malay College, when the ‘Old Boys
Weekend’ was held between 4th to 6th November, during the tenure of Dato’ Abdullah bin Dato’ Muda Ibrahim (1920-1925) as President of MCOBA from 1960-1963. From 1964-
1970, MCOBA was led by Tan Sri Dato’ Nik Ahmad Kamil bin Nik Mahmood who was the Menteri Besar of Kelantan. During the period, MCOBA celebrated the Diamond Jubilee
of Malay College.
From 2014-2016, MCOBA was led by Dato’ Ghazali Bin Mat Ariff. The current President of MCOBA is Y.M. Dato Tunku Ahmad Burhanuddin Tunku Dato’ Seri
Adnan (2016 – present). On June 2014, MCOBA had another change at its helm. Dato’ Ghazali bin Mat Ariff was given the mandate to lead MCOBA. MCOBA continues with new
spirit to strive onwards with new agenda. Plans for redevelopment of its assets like the MCOBA Building and the land bank in Bestari jaya, Selangor was activated. New activities
involving the MCOBA Volunteer Brigade was initiated to assist the needful in times of need. A Fund Raising Drive was launched to ensure suitability of MCOBA in its future

and the establishment of 'Old Boys Quota' for admission to the Malay College. Another ACCESSION NUMBER:
interesting project was the establishment of the MCOBA-OV Council (MCOV), which has 2012/0001264S
been a step forward in enhancing the long-standing friendship between the Malay College and
Vajiravudh College, the Old Boys and the Present Boys. The MCOBA is also aware of its
social responsibility and has made significant contributions to individuals and charitable
organizations.
Because individuals with different talents and abilities come together causing the
MCOBA to succeed for many years. they can serve as a good example to the MCOBA
generation and thus generate more activity for schools and communities.

“Keluar membimbing negara” that’s one of the lyric that has proven to guide the country from one of the fellow alumni of
MCKK who else would be if not Tunku Abd Rahman. Everyone knows who is he right? Tunku Abdul Rahman was born on 8
February 1903, at Istana Pelamin Palace in Alor Setar, Kedah, the seventh son and one of 45 children of Sultan Abdul Hamid FIGURE 17:
Halim Shah, the twenty-fifth ruler of the Kedah Sultanate. Tunku's mother was Che Manjalara (Nueang Nandanagara), a Thai, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-haj

At that time, cholera and malaria were very common all over Kedah and at least two of Tunku's brothers and his older sister died from cholera while Tunku himself suffered from
intermittent attacks of malaria until he left for London in 1920. He received early education at the Alor Setar Malay Primary School before furthering his studies at the government
English school, Sultan Abdul Hamid College. He and his fellow siblings were later sent by his parents to Debsirin School in Bangkok. He returned home in 1915 to continue his
education at the Penang Free School. So how he started his carrier?
18
TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN
One of the interesting about Tunku is, Tunku became Vice-President of Kedah Football Association after his return from Cambridge in the late 1930s. Later in
1949, Tunku became President of Selangor Football Association, and a few years later, he became President of Football Association of Malaysia for 20 years. During his
Presidency, he introduced a competition for those under-18 years old such as the Piala FAM (FAM Cup) and the Piala Rahman (Rahman Cup). Being an avid sportsman,
Tunku was a firm believer that sports can be a good catalyst in bringing about greater social unity among Malaysians of various races and religions. Therefore, he supported
and initiated many sports events. These included an international football tournament, the Pestabola Merdeka (Independence Football Festival) in 1957. The following year, he
was elected as the first president of Asian Football Confederation (AFC), a post he held until 1977. Tunku also loved horse racing and was a regular at the Selangor Turf.
Tunku's racing interests included the champion racehorse Think Big. After it won the 1974 Melbourne Cup, Think Big's owners, Malaysian businessman Dato Tan Chin Nam
and Australian property developer Rick O'Sullivan, invited Tunku to join them as a part-owner of the horse. Think Big then won its second Melbourne Cup in 1975. In 1977,
having acquired substantial shares in The Star, a Penang-based newspaper, he became the newspaper's chairman.

who ran a coffee shop that Tunku had frequented as a student. When Tunku's letter reached Violet, she
dropped everything and turned up in Singapore. They were secretly married by the Kadi in the Malay
mosque in Arab Street according to Muslim rites. After conversion, Violet's Muslim name was Puteh
Bte Abdullah. Violet went to live in Penang because they had no approval of the Ruler or Regent.
Tunku Ibrahim, the Regent, was strongly opposed to mixed marriages, but when he died unexpectedly
in 1934 and was succeeded as Regent by Tunku Mahmud, the Sultan's younger brother, he consented
to the marriage. Though their marriage went well, Tunku's responsibilities in the public service were
all-consuming and after a separation where Violet returned to London, they were divorced amicably in
1947. He then married Sharifah Rodziah Syed Alwi Barakbah, with whom he adopted four children,
Sulaiman, Mariam, Sharifah Hanizah (granddaughter) and Faridah. Tunku's house, located at 1 Jalan
Changkat Kia Peng in Kuala Lumpur, was acquired by the Government of the Philippines in 1987 and
now serves as the chancery of the Philippine Embassy in Malaysia.
He died peacefully on 6 December 1990[6] at the age of 87. Among those who
witnessed his last breath were Chief Secretary Tun Ahmad Sarji, Prime Minister Mahathir, and a few
others. The PM later ordered the Chief Secretary to announce the death of Tunku. He was buried at the
Langgar Royal Mausoleum in Alor Setar.
