SEPTEMBER (WEEK 1 - WEEK 3) Weekly Reflections
For this first class, I acknowledge on the importance of emphasizing the five main elements in National Education of Philosophy that must be applied as a future teacher. Apart from that, I had learned about the essential of implementing DSKP for our future lesson planning such as to focus on the learning standards of the subject chosen before constructing a lesson plan. Considering all this, first class of Microteaching was filled with a lot of new things and task that makes me a little bit anxious but excited at the same time. Deep down, I had the feeling where I need to push myself to become more participative and expressive throughout every class for this subject so I will be able to become a well-trained teacher in the future. Since this is our first class, I was impressed towards the way our lecturer communicates with us with the body language, eye contact, tone of voice, and ability to listen to others that make me more eager to participate in class. As what they said, “A good first impression can work wonders”. DATE: 11/09/2023 Week 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=RlEwNUxLoD4&pp=ygUaaG93IHRvIHdyaXRlIGEgbGVzc29uIHBsYW4%3D (LECTURE)
Content Standard Learning Standard General Objective Specific Objective Numbering: 1.0, 2.0 Numbering: 1.1.1 As for today's tutorial class, Madam Nirmala started the class by asking us questions about the definition of Microteaching. In my understanding, Microteaching is the 20% preparation of future teachers to develop their skills in teaching by having their peers as the students and evaluators as well. Why is it only 20%? Because there will be so many other necessary things that an educator needs to do apart from teaching such as meeting with the parents, co-curriculum activities, sports, and much more. DATE: 13/09/2023 Week 1 Next, we went through the DSKP guidelines where we focused more on the content standard and learning standard. I managed to differentiate the usage of content standards and learning standard as stated in the DSKP that will be used to create a lesson plan. Next, Madam Nirmala also explained the implementation of PBS (Pentaksiran Berasaskan Sekolah) in school. Based on my findings, PBS has been implemented in our country since 2011 where it is an approach to ensure that teachers can implement Teaching and Learning (PDP) in a more creative and innovative way to ensure a more enjoyable learning environment. The reporting method would assess the level of effort made by students to learn and the reporting method for classroom assessments on student achievement will be improved and strengthened by having it twice a year which is in the middle and at the end of the academic session using a comprehensive and clear descriptor. (TUTORIAL)
Today’s lecture class was replaced by attending the Education Fair at Chancellor Hall. One of the tentative programmes at there was about industrial talk by Sir Md Rashidy Bin Md Amin who is the Chief Operating Officer for Innotex Corporation Sdn. Bhd. Based on the speech given, I managed to take notes of bits of advice and encouragement from him especially in terms of career development. As a future teacher, it brightens me even more on how should I manage my pathway in terms of my career once I graduate from MSU. Thus, I went through the Internet and sought various other fields that I could choose and apply but still related to my interest and background other than just focusing on being a school teacher. Based on my findings, there are a lot of job opportunities for students who graduated from a Bachelor in Education Science: Education Consultant - Offer guidance to schools or educational organizations on curriculum development and instructional strategies. Science Communicator - Working as a science communicator in the science center, or media outlets such as Planetarium or Petrosains. Private Tutor - Offer private tutoring services to students who need additional help with science subjects either online or face-to-face. Content Developer - Create educational content, such as textbooks, e-learning modules, or educational apps, for science subjects. DATE: 18/09/2023 Week 2 (LECTURE)
Today's exploration of lesson planning has provided a valuable opportunity as a future educator, especially for the upcoming internship posting. Referring to the lesson plan template given, Madam Nirmala provided us with a thorough and clear explanation of each of the content in the lesson plan that need to be understood. DATE: 20/09/2023 Week 2 Another important parts of the lesson plan is the Differentiation Strategies. Based on my understanding, this section considers different types of student’s abilities as we need to categorize them. Thus, a teacher need to really plan their learning methods and activities precisely in order to receive positive outputs from each of the students in the class. Not to be forgotten, learning objectives need to be designed accurately such as it need to be depends on the number of activities. Then, there should be a Main activity and Complimentary activity included in every lesson plan. In conjunction with that, the activities designated must be mapped with the objectives stated. There were some parts that I found to be crucial in getting deep comprehension from the lesson plan such as the Cross-curricular elements which are important for nowadays education to be implemented in order to produce holistic students. One element of CCE should at least be included in each lesson plan. (TUTORIAL)
Today’s lecture class was conducted online since Madam Nirmala was involved in a faculty meeting but still, she managed to conduct a short and meaningful class with us by continue on the lesson plan learning session. These are the outputs that I found important and need to be taken seriously when constructing a lesson plan: DATE: 25/09/2023 Week 3 Do not use ‘Students’ in the lesson plan context, use ‘Pupils’ instead. This is because ‘Students’ is much more suitable for tertiary learners. Avoid long sentences in the activities section. However, steps should be short and precise step by step. Place ‘Pupils need to…” at the early of each sentence instead of ‘Teacher need to..’ in order to ensure it is a student-centered learning. The longer the resources, the better as it will seems that the teacher is fully prepared for the whole lesson. (LECTURE)
As for today, Madam had gone through my lesson plan that I had submitted. There are some changes that need to be done on order to produce a well-organized lesson plan from what Madam Nirmala had explained which are: Differentiation Strategies need to be mapped with learning objectives. One learning objective should coorelate with one activity. There should not be overlapped in order to avoid confusing during learning session. As for Moral Value, only one should be included. Do not use ‘Understand’ or ‘Know’ words in learning objectives because the outcomes cannot be measure. DATE: 27/09/2023 Week 3 Apart from that, I had also learned the differences of learning objective and learning outcomes. In my opinion, learning outcomes is the term that is more appropriate to be use as it consider student as the centered learning. Other than that, it is crucial to share learning objectives with the students so that they would have a better understanding on what they should expect from the learning. (TUTORIAL)
OCTOBER (WEEK 4 - WEEK 7) Weekly Reflections
Apart from that, each verb that will be inserted at the beginning of the objective needs to refer to Bloom’s Taxonomy verbs. One verb should be for one statement of objective. Not to be forgotten, avoid setting a duration since the ability of each student should be different. The sequence of the ABCD concept could be B -> C -> D -> or B -> D -> C. Next, the flow given is the sequence on how to construct a lesson plan accordingly to ensure smoothness of the learning process flow: Today's learning session was totally focused on the main element in the lesson plan which is the statement of objectives. In order to write a well-constructed objective, we should refer to the ABCD concept: DATE: 02/10/2023 Week 4 A – By the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to… B – What the teacher want the students to be able to do C – How do the teacher want them to do (condition) D – How much/many (degree) 1.DSKP 2.CONTENT STANDARD 3.LEARNING STANDARD 4.CONTENT TOPIC 5.OBJECTIVES 6.REFER BLOOM’S TAXONOMY VERB 7.ACTIVITIES 8.CHECK BACK OBJECTIVES (LECTURE)
1) Attention – This phase starts at the moment the teacher enters the class. Teachers should be able to grab student’s attention either through their appearance, sound, and else. 2) Interest – Teacher should ask students some perplexing questions based on any video, audio, or diagram that the teacher displayed. The conversation should be casual. 3) Putting lesson context – This brainstorming strategy requires teacher to ask students questions prior knowledge. At this moment, learning objectives should be shared with the students as well. 4) Advanced organizers – Increase student’s curiosity by asking them what if that thing occurred or what would they have done if they were in that situation. Teacher may also include a video or diagram for them to refer to and get some ideas. For today's tutorial class, we went through the important element in designing a set induction called as pre-lesson. Set induction is a crucial part for a lesson since students will look forward to the activities based on the opening given by the teacher. Duration for set induction should be only within 5-7 minutes for an hour class. There are some strategies that should be looked into when designing a set induction: DATE: 04/10/2023 Week 4 (TUTORIAL)
Today agenda’s is about teaching aids. Based on my understanding, teaching aids will enhance learning by making the lessons more engaging and comprehensible. It will to help clarify complex concepts, cater to different learning styles, and also stimulate student participation. There were various group of teaching aid such as audio, visual or audio-visual that can be apply based on our own creativity and depending on the topic that will be teach as well. Other than that, Madam Nirmala had also brief us for our first Mock-teaching and the criteria they will be look upon. As for the first mock-teaching that required us to do Set Induction, a teaching aid is needed. A total duration of 5-7 minutes is enough for set induction. And most importantly, learning objectives should be explained at the end of pre-lesson session. DATE: 09/10/2023 Week 5 (LECTURE)
Mock teaching was conducted today where each of us needs to present our set-induction with the presence of our teaching aid. The feedback that was given by Madam Nirmala for each of us was very useful in order to become more professional as an educator. As for my part, these are the points that I should consider in order to improve my set induction: DATE: 11/10/2023 Week 5 Lesson should be simple and less lecture. More appropriate and formal attire. Explanation of the topic should be moved to the activity session. For overall performance and feedback, I managed to received positive feedbacks and comments through peer evaluation and from my lecturer as well. Apart from that, I also learned a lot from my other’s classmates presentation that exposed me towards more creativity and learning styles that can be apply as a teacher. (TUTORIAL)
Our presentation for Project 1, Task A was conducted today. As for me and my partner, Nasyintah, I would say we did a quite great job for our Educational Game. We did ‘Scientific Bingo’ where we adapted it from the classic Bingo game. We managed to delegate our tasks equally for this task and turns out everything went as smoothly as we expected. Throughout the process of preparing the Educational Games, we had gone through plenty of meetings in order for both of us to have a fully understanding of the content of lesson plans in order to create an attractive and useful Educational Game. DATE: 16/10/2023 Week 6 Based on the feedback given by Madam Nirmala, in terms of improvisation, our Educational game would be better if we upgraded the materials to stick the wording by using ‘Velcro’ tape so that the board can be recycled with other contents or topics as well. Other than that, all the other feedback from Madam Nirmala was positive especially where our Educational Game was created attractively, creatively, and challenging which is good because it will enhance student’s competitiveness in class. (LECTURE)
The learning outcomes for today is specifically towards one of the teaching techniques that an educator needs to empowered which is stimulus variant. In my own understanding, a stimulus variant in teaching involves presenting information or content in various ways to cater to different learning styles and preferences. By using a mix of visual aids, auditory explanations, hands-on activities, and interactive discussions, educators can accommodate diverse student needs. This approach enhances engagement, comprehension, and retention, as students are more likely to grasp and connect with the material when presented through multiple sensory channels. It promotes a more inclusive and effective learning environment for both students and the teacher. To further my understanding in this context area, I referred to a Youtube Video on hot to enhance skills in stimulus variant: DATE: 18/10/2023 Week 6 https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=810WtFLYfG0&pp=ygUgaG93IHRvIGVuaGFuY2Ugc3RpbX VsdXMgdmFyaWFudCA%3D (TUTORIAL)
A task was given during the last tutorial class and today we had a discussion session regarding the task on the stimulus variant. Basically, these five points need to be emphasized when implementing stimulus variant: DATE: 23/10/2023 Week 7 Apart from that, we can refer to 9 steps of Gagne’s Nine levels of learning to ease the process of stimulus variant and the whole process of learning. This is the summarised from the Gagne’s method that should be considered and refer: Body Language Q&A sessions Activities Teaching Aid Verbal & Non-verbal communication (LECTURE)
As for today’s lesson, we were exposed towards questioning techniques. Basically, this approach needs to be mastered by educators in order to gain student’s focus and attention in class. Other than that, we would also wanted to have two-way communication between the students and the teacher. These are some of the fundamental aspects that should be consider when applying questioning techniques: DATE: 25/10/2023 Week 7 Question need to be open-ended. Avoid ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ type of questions. Students should talk more compared to the teacher. Ask ‘critical’ thinking skills questions. Develop imaginative kind of thinking for the students. Initiate questions that will help prepare for next lesson. The sequence of questions should be based on Bloom’s Taxonomy. Avoid making students feel targeted. Justify the wrong answer given by the students to help them understand. Ensure there is a probing process involved (continuous questioning). Apply the RPA strategies. Prepare question prior every class. (TUTORIAL)
NOVEMBER (WEEK 8 - WEEK 12) Weekly Reflections
Today is the Mock Teaching presentation for Lesson delivery. As for my preparation, I had prepared a teaching aid to apply my stimulus variant technique in order to enhance the audience’s attraction and engagement. Thus, I created a ‘Food Pyramid Velcro Board’ which was made up from scratch. It was a worthwhile effort as Madam Nirmala approved and praised my teaching aid. Apart from that, based on the comments from peer evaluation and from our lecturer, most of the feedback was positive which made me so relieved. They love how I managed to apply the questioning techniques proficiently and also the reinforcement that I applied while conducting the mock-reaching. On the other side, the only improvement that I need to be aware of and improve is my voice. I should practice more to have a louder voice so that in the future, the whole class consisting of 30 students would be able to listen to my voice and pay full attention to the lesson. To wrap up our mock teaching activity, Madam Nirmala pointed some elements that should be noted down to improve our Lesson delivery technique: DATE: 30/10/2023 Week 8 Do not use the term ‘some more’ – not appropriate Do not mention the word ‘anything’ – be more specific Model the right language Do not refer to ourselves as ‘teacher’ – use ‘I’ Make sure to wear proper attire Clear pronunciation should be delivered Write a script on what you would like to ask to your students. (LECTURE)
DATE: 30/10/2023 Week 8 (LECTURE)
Today's class is a continuous mock teaching activity focusing on our online classmates from MSU colleges. Madam Nirmala wanted us to evaluate each of our friends based on their performance. Thus, in my opinion, most of them should improve their technique of stimulus variant. None of them had actually used teaching aids that could actually attract the audience more to do the activity. Other than that, since they did this mock teaching prerecording, it seems that they did not put much effort into it compared to those who did it physically. In terms of the flow, most of them were still clueless about how the mock teaching should be done because they did the whole set of lesson plan instead of just focusing on lesson delivery. In order to improve, they should frequently ask Madam Nirmala or also the physical students about the actual requirement that need to be done for the mock teaching. DATE: 01/11/2023 Week 8 (TUTORIAL)
Thinking about being a teacher in the future, using strategies to make learning better seems really important especially in terms of reinforcement. Firstly, I see how saying positive things and celebrating when students do well can make them feel good about learning. It's like giving them a little boost to keep going. Also, I understand that everyone learns in their own way. So, using different ways to teach, like talking, using things, or working together, can help everyone understand and like what they're learning. I think using these strategies can also make the class a fun and positive place. When students feel supported and happy, it makes learning more enjoyable for everyone. For me, I know I'll need to be flexible and try different things. Not every class is the same, and being able to change and adjust will be important for helping students learn in the best way for them. In short, using strategies to make learning positive and fun is something I look forward to doing as a teacher. It can help students feel good about learning, make lessons interesting, create a happy class, and teach me to be adaptable. Thus, I had made a further research in order to improve and enhance my reinforcement strategies in class by accessing to one of the Youtube Video that provide detail explanation on this matter: DATE: 6/11/2023 Week 9 https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=810WtFLYfG0&pp=ygUgaG93IHRvIGVuaGFuY2Ugc3RpbXVsdX MgdmFyaWFudCA%3D (LECTURE)
It was a presentation day for our Educational Blog project. Throughout designing the blog, I found out that Wixx.com provide beneficial approach as an educator to approach students indirectly. This platform's drag-and-drop interface made customization easy, allowing me to focus on presenting complex scientific concepts in an engaging way. Next, the idea of educational blog will facilitate teacher-student interaction. Students can engage with their teacher through comments and discussions, creating a virtual community around the educational content. This not only enhances the learning experience but also encourages students to share and exchange ideas, fostering a collaborative and supportive learning environment. . Based on our presentation of our blog, Madam Nirmala love how we design our website by inserting all the elements and activities applicable for our selected students. All of our activities were accessible and the instructions given were easy to understand. Not to be forgotten, the colours chosen for the website were also presentable and suits student’s preference. Overall, we received positive feedback from our lecturer and the audience for our Educational blog project. DATE: 8/11/2023 Week 9 Link: https://bit.ly/GOSCIENCETECH (TUTORIAL)
Closure serves as the finishing touch to a lesson, providing a sense of conclusion and reinforcing key concepts. It allows students to reflect on what they've learned and how it connects to their prior knowledge and whether they manage to achieve the learning objectives. However, it is important to manage the time in order to ensure that closure would be included. Here’s are the points that need to be consider while doing closure: DATE: 20/11/2023 Week 11 Teacher should give feedback from all activities conducted Do short activities to check understanding Avoid ‘Do you understand?’ question Do not introduce new information especially when not related Correct student’s misunderstanding Additionally, there are plenty of strategies that can be apply when conducting closure such as Exit ticket, Jeopardy, Traffic Light, ‘What am I’ and much more. However, teacher need to choose and modified the strategy chose that can fit in the duration left for the closure. Next, these 3 simple tips can be refer to ensure the process of closure be in smooth: 1.Cool Down (Reinforcement) 2.Review (Strategies) 3.Task Closing (LECTURE)
As for today’s lesson, we learned on the ‘Use of Whiteboard’ which is a crucial part in lesson delivery. Despite a whiteboard might look like a traditional kind of teaching aid, it will actually become one of the most engaging platform during learning process. It is also beneficial for students with different abilities and learning stye especially kinesthetic and visual learners. One tips that need to be aware regarding the colour of marker is to not use other colours for main writing other than Blue and Black. This is because students that sitting far away from the board might face difficulties to read the writing clearly. Next, if it’s possible, make usage of the whole whiteboard by fill it up with the content below: DATE: 22/11/2023 Week 11 (TUTORIAL)
Today is the Mock Teaching presentation for Closure. As for my preparation, I had prepared a game called as ‘Pictionary’. Incorporating a Pictionary game into learning session not only makes the recap session enjoyable but also enhances the learning experience by promoting active participation and reinforcing key concepts. Based on peer evaluation, these are the points that I should consider and take note in order to improve my teaching skills especially in closure part. DATE: 29/11/2023 Week 12 Duration of closure need to be lessen a bit. Game conducted more appropriate for lesson delivery. (TUTORIAL)
