Rev. Amy Dear Sisters and Brothers:
Wilson Feltz Wednesday, February 26, marked the beginning of the Season of Lent in the
church calendar. The Season of the Lent consists of the 40 days (not including
Sundays) before Easter, commemorating Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness at the
beginning of his ministry. In fact, I have titled our new sermon series that begins this
weekend, “Forty.” I hope you will make plans to attend worship each week during
this season, and please invite your friends and neighbors as we explore the
significance of the number 40 in our holy scriptures.

I hope you were able to come by the church on Wednesday to participate in our
drive-through opportunities to observe Ash Wednesday or that you were able to
attend the silent, come-and-go service in the sanctuary. The service that evening
offered us the opportunity to enter into this season of reflection as we consider our
own mortality and repent of our sin. To signify purification and sorrow for sin in
accordance with our faith tradition, I and a good friend of the congregation, Rev.
Michael Hamilton, were available to pray with and make the sign of cross with
ashes on the forehead or hand of anyone who wished to observe Ash Wednesday
in that way.

As we enter into this season, it is helpful to commit to a practice of fasting and
self-denial from a type of food or a regular habit to remind us of our mortality and
dependence on God. The good news is that as we practice self-denial on the
weekdays of Lent, we experience great joy and celebration when we break our
fasts on the Sundays in Lent. That’s right! You can break your fast on each Sunday
in Lent! That’s because just as we experience resurrection in our own lives
throughout the year, Sundays in Lent invite us to take a deep breath, pause from
the hard work of self-denial and indulge in the goodness of God’s creation.

Another great way to observe Lent is through adding a spiritual practice, such as a
daily or weekly devotional or act of creation care. Our Lenten devotional study
began today, but it is not too late to join this weekly meeting during Wednesdays at
lunchtime. Feel free to call the church office at (915) 772-2734 for more information.
The United Methodist Women of the New Mexico Conference have shared a
wonderful calendar with ideas to observe Lent with the care of our world in mind. A
copy was emailed to each of you on February 19th.

However you choose to observe the season of Lent, in these 40 days, the invitation
remains for us all to remember, “From dust we came, and to dust we shall return.”

Repent, my friends, and believe the Gospel.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Amy
