someone.

Chapters 1 and 2

Chapter 1 Question: Why do you suppose the narrator thinks it would be a disaster if

know more than the other characters. What did the reader learn about the stranger? How is
this an example of dramatic irony?

My Answer: The reader learns that the stranger was listening to
the whole story about the Tuck’s past. This is an example of
dramatic irony because none of the characters know that the
stranger was listening, only the reader knows.

Summarize
Chapters 1-8

In chapters 1-8 of Tuck Everlasting, it describes how Winnie Foster meets the Tucks. In chapter 1,
Winnie lives in an overprotective house in the village of Treegap with her parents and grandmother. Their
house is on the edge of the woods they own but never go into. In the next chapter, the Tucks are getting
excited to see their sons whom they have not seen in ten years. Mae is heading off to meet them, but they
say that she has to be careful not to be seen. She does not look in the mirror before she goes because it
says she has looked the same for the past 87 years. Mae takes along her music box as she goes off to
meet her sons. In chapter 3, Winnie has a conversation with a toad. She talks about how hard her life is
and she decides to run away. Next,That night Winnie heads out to her yard and meets a stranger walking
by who asks her about the woods and the people she knows in the area. He tells her that he is looking for
a family. Winnie’s grandmother comes out to tell Winnie to go inside. Just then some music is heard in the
woods. The grandmother says it is the elf music she hasn’t heard in years. Winnie thinks it sounds like a
music box and the stranger is very interested in it. Then, In the morning Winnie decides to run away and
when she goes into the wood she finds a man drinking out of a spring and he spots Winnie and she asks
what his name is and how old he is, he says that his name is Jesse Tuck and he says he is 17 years old
but at first said he was 104. Then Winnie is thirsty and asks if the water is good to drink and he says it is
probably dirty but Winnie just saw him drink it. After that, Mae Tuck and Jesse’s older brother Miles came
and they kidnapped Winnie to take her somewhere private. So Jesse, Mae, Miles, and Winnie were all on
a horse. There are now at a shallow stream asking Winnie to keep a secret for what they were about to
tell her. In the 7th chapter, the Tucks were telling Winnie how a spring made them immortal and why she
couldn’t drink it because she would look 10 forever. Last, Winnie sat mouth wide open shocked on the
story. Now they were riding home on the horse back to the Tuck’s house and none of the characters know,
only the reader knows that the stranger heard the whole entire story.

Chapters 9-17

Chapters 9 and 10

Chapter 9 Question: What did Miles and Jesse do as soon as they got home?
My Answer: When Miles and Jesse got home they splashed in
the pond.

Chapter 10 Question: Which house do you think Winnie prefers? Explain.
My Answer: I think Winnie likes the Tuck’s house better because
at her house everything is perfect in place and clean, but at the
Tuck’s house the just don’t care where anything is and I think
she likes it.

Chapters 11 and 12

Chapter 11 Question:Analyze the differences between dinner at the Fosters and

dinners at the Tucks.

My Answer: The differences between dinner at the Fosters and
the Tucks is, at the Foster’s it is very proper and they talk and
sit on their chair and plate on the table and eat. However at the
Tuck’s you sit with your plate on your lap and you can sit on the
floor also there is no talking.

Chapter 12 Question:Situational irony is an unexpected event. Discuss the

situational irony at the end of this chapter.

My Answer: The situational irony at the end of the chapter is the
horse getting stolen.

Chapters 13 and 14

Chapter 13 Question: What news did the stranger reveal to the Fosters?
My Answer: The news the stranger revealed to the Fosters is he
says, “I know where they’ve taken the little girl.”

Chapter 14 Question: Explain how Winnie feels about Jesse’s proposition.
My Answer: Winnie doesn’t know what to think or believe.

Chapters 15-17

Chapter 15 Question: The stranger has the Fosters “between a rock and a hard place”. What

does this idiom mean?

My Answer: What this idiom means is in a situation where one
is faced with two equally difficult alternatives.

Chapter 16 Question: Why do you suppose the stranger ditched the constable? Explain.
My Answer: I think that the stranger ditched the constable
because he wanted to get there earlier so that he could
interrogate the Tucks about taking Winnie. Then he could say
that he owns the wood and that he knows about the spring.

Chapter 17 Question:What did Miles reveal to Winnie about his children during the boat trip?
My Answer: Miles revealed to Winnie about his children that he
had a daughter and he used to take her fishing and now she
would be about 80 years old if she was still alive, and his son
would be 82 years old.

Tuck’s house and notices it looks very rugged and messy. In chapter 11, they have
dinner and Winnie notices that the Tucks eat very different then what she is used to,
because at the Tuck’s house there are no rules so it is normal to lick the syrup off of
your fingers. But at the Fosters house Winnie was not aloud to. Next, Winnie and Mr.
Tuck go on the boat in the pond and Mr. Tuck tells Winnie why it is important to keep
the spring a secret, then Miles came outside and said that someone stole the horse.

Epilogue

What does the reader learn from the epilogue in this novel? Do
you think the epilogue was necessary?

The reader learns from the epilogue that Winnie dies and that
the forest with the spring gets caught on fire and the whole
wood burned down. Also that the Tucks move on from Treegap
to another place. I think the epilogue is necessary because if
you didn’t read it then you would have never known what
happened to Winnie, the spring, and the Tucks.

Summarize

Chapters 18-25

In Tuck Everlasting chapters 18-25 a lot happens, as the book is ending. In
chapter 18 the Tucks and Winnie are eating breakfast and a stranger knocks at the
door and wants to come inside. In the next chapter the stranger told the Tucks that
the Fosters sold their wood to him and the spring and wood was now his. Then he
starts to take Winnie and Mae grabs the shotgun and shoots the stranger. The
constable sees this happen. In chapter 20 Mae is told she may have to go to the
gallows. Mae explained to the constable that the stranger was taking Winnie against
her will. The constable takes Winnie home and Mae to the prison cell. In chapter 21
they find out that the stranger died. In chapter 22 Winnie goes out in the yard to play
and Jesse shows up at the gate and told Winnie that they were trying to get Mae out
of jail. Winnie says that she can help. They will meet at midnight. He also gives
Winnie a bottle of the spring water to drink when she is seventeen. In the next
chapter Winnie started to fall asleep but then she woke up five minutes before
midnight. In chapter 24 Winnie starts to leave the house and sees Jesse waiting at
the gate. Then they meet Tuck and Miles and they go to the jail and break Mae out
and put Winnie in. In the last chapter the constable discovers the switch and takes
Winnie home. Then Winnie takes the bottle that Jesse gave her and pours it over the
toad because if she changed her mind she could just go to the spring. And then she
set the toad free and said “You’ll be safe forever.”

Winnie Foster is a 10
year old girl and she lives
in the touch-me-not
cottage, in Treegap. She
is a only child so her
parents and grandmother
may so much attention
to her that she is tired of.
She also says that she
wants a new name that
isn’t so worn down from
being called so much.

Jesse Tuck says he is a 17
year old boy but actually
104. He is the youngest of
the Tuck family. Him and
his brother Miles travel the
world and come back home
every 10 years. In the
future he hopes for Winnie
to drink the spring water
when she is 17 and then
they can get married.

Miles Tuck is 22 years
old and he is the oldest
child of Mae Tuck and
Angus Tuck. He got
married and had a family
before but his wife left
him and took his two
kids. She left him
because they had been
married for a while and
he didn’t look like he was
getting any older.

The book never really is
clear about how old Angus
is, but he has two kids
Miles, and Jesse. He also
has a wife named Mae
Tuck.

Mae Tuck is the
mom of Jesse and
Miles. She has a
music box as you
can see in the
picture next to this.
And she found it in
the woods a long
time ago. She also
has wanted to have
a daughter of her
own since she has
two boys. So Winnie
was kind of like her
daughter.

The stranger is a sly sneaky
person. I would think he
would be a con artist for a
living. I would say he would
be about 50ish. He is pretty
much the bad guy in Tuck
Everlasting. One thing I find
interesting is they never say
his name in the book.

Sweet, calm, Strictet, uptight,
kind, helpful, proper, rich,
loving

They are both moms, they both love
Winnie, and they both have kids.
