Peru is a member of the (ACTB) Andean
Community trade bloc with Bolivia, Colombia,
Ecuador, and Venezuela.
The currency is the sol (PEN).
LANGUAGE AND RELIGION
Spanish and the indigenous languages
The Roman Catholic Church was the state church
in Peru until 1979.
Many indigenous peoples who are Catholic mix
traditional beliefs.
NATURAL RESOURCES
Peru's natural resources include copper, silver,
gold, iron ore, oil, timber, and fish.
Wheat, potatoes, sugarcane, rice, and coffee are
important agricultural products.
TOURISM
Most of the population lives in urban
areas.
People who live in the coastal region are
called costeños, those in the Andes are
called Andinos, and those in the jungle
are often referred to as charapas.
Peru has a very diverse population;
*45 percent is of indigenous heritage,
descendants of the Inca Empire.
*37 percent is of mixed indigenous and
European heritage.
*Fifteen percent is of European descent (mostly
Spanish)
*3 percent is composed of black descendants of
West African slaves such as Japanese and
Chinese immigrants.
