 Peru is a member of the (ACTB) Andean

Community trade bloc with Bolivia, Colombia,
Ecuador, and Venezuela.

 The currency is the sol (PEN).

LANGUAGE AND RELIGION

 Spanish and the indigenous languages
 The Roman Catholic Church was the state church

in Peru until 1979.
 Many indigenous peoples who are Catholic mix

traditional beliefs.

NATURAL RESOURCES

 Peru's natural resources include copper, silver,
gold, iron ore, oil, timber, and fish.

 Wheat, potatoes, sugarcane, rice, and coffee are
important agricultural products.

TOURISM

 Most of the population lives in urban
areas.

 People who live in the coastal region are
called costeños, those in the Andes are
called Andinos, and those in the jungle
are often referred to as charapas.

 Peru has a very diverse population;

*45 percent is of indigenous heritage,
descendants of the Inca Empire.

*37 percent is of mixed indigenous and
European heritage.

*Fifteen percent is of European descent (mostly
Spanish)

*3 percent is composed of black descendants of
West African slaves such as Japanese and
Chinese immigrants.
