WELCOME

... to our 2018 production, ‘Calamity Jane’. This is the
fourth time in our history that we have performed this
well known & popular show. It has so many great songs—
from the lovely ‘Secret Love’ to the rip-roaring ‘Deadwood
Stage’. This year we have another graduate from CAOS
Academy joining the adult society. We wish him a long
& happy association with us. We would like to say a huge
“Thank You” to our sponsors & advertisers and to you, our
loyal patrons, for your continued support. We hope that
you enjoy the show & that you have a safe journey home.

Mavis Sheldon - President

Hello and welcome to Deadwood! ‘Calamity Jane’ is one
of the best known musical films of all time, made famous
by Doris Day who played the title role. This stage version
was last performed by CAOS 14 years ago! This year it has
been wonderful to see lots of new faces join us, and I am
sure you will agree that they have, with everyone else
on stage and off, worked incredibly hard to provide you
with a fantastic show. Let’s hope they have an amazing
time this week!
Our 2019 production will be ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’,
a brand new show for us. Tickets are on sale now so
please call at the box office before you leave as it’s sure
to be a spectacular show! In the meantime relax and
have a “whip-crack-away” of a time.

Lee Hilton-Brammer - Chair

The Story

“You’re a great one to have around in a calamity” said a Major to Jane once, and that’s
how she got her name. Now she runs the stagecoach in and out of Deadwood City. She
dresses like a man, totes a gun and, after every journey, has a tall story to tell about the
number of Indians she has shot. As our story begins, she has just got into town and heads
for the local saloon.
At ‘The Golden Garter’, Henry Miller, the proprietor, thinks he has engaged an actress,
Frances Fryer, and is expecting her to arrive on the stagecoach. He hopes her turn
will really draw in the townsmen who have been mooning over big city star, Adelaide
Adams. No actress arrives, though, only a young song & dance man, Fran-cis Fryer. Afraid
the audience will turn ugly when their promised actress doesn’t appear, he persuades
Fryer to impersonate a woman for his act. When the crowd see through his disguise,
Calamity quells the impending riot by promising to bring Adelaide from Chicago.
In Chicago, Calamity mistakes Adelaide’s dresser, Katie Brown, for the star and Katie goes
along to Deadwood, hoping to grab her own chance for stardom. After something of a
false start, Katie is a hit and is soon the toast of the town in her own right.
Among Katie’s admirers are Wild Bill Hickock and Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin. This
doesn’t please Calamity who has long had a soft spot for Danny herself. Because Calamity
is a good friend, Katie supresses her own feelings for Danny and presses him to take
Calamity to the upcoming dance at Fort Scully. In the end, they go as a foursome and
Calamity, in some borrowed finery, is the belle of the ball. Danny, though, still has eyes
only for Katie and when Calamity finds them together she flies into a rage and orders
Katie out of Deadwood at gunpoint. Bill takes her away before she makes even more of
a fool of herself and, in consoling each other, they realise that their own friendship has
become something more. Calamity then regrets her behaviour and when Danny tells
them Katie has already left Deadwood, she is off in a flash to bring her back for a triple
(yes, triple!) wedding.

The Production Team

JAN JACKSON - DIRECTOR
Jan has performed since she was three and has taken many principal
roles, including her favourite part, ‘Peggy Sawyer’, in ‘42nd Street’.
Most were with CAOS but she has also performed with other
societies, including Dukinfield AODS, Endellion TC and Woodseats
MTC. She became CAOS Director in 2006 but has often found
herself back on stage as a last minute ‘stand-in’ and is the first to
admit she rather enjoys it.
PETER PIPER - MUSICAL DIRECTOR
Peter has been playing bass guitar for CAOS productions since
2006 and this is is fifth show with us as MD. He has worked with
local societies Woodseats, Splinters, Sheffield Teachers, Croft,
Maltby and many more. He has been a member of several local
bands and has toured the English Theatres with The Rock’n’Roll
Travelling Theatre Company performing in his own production of
‘Not Fade Away’ - The Buddy Holly Story.
GAIL RENSHAW - CHOREOGRAPHER
Gail first joined CAOS as a young dancer and was with us for five
years, during which time she played the part of ‘Greta’ in ‘The
Dancing Years’. She went on to become a professional dancer
before opening her own dance school in Ecclesfield. She returned
to CAOS in 2001 to choreograph ‘Anything Goes’ and she has been
our Choreographer ever since. She has been busy recently helping
our cast brush up their skills at her adult tap classes.
BEN JACKSON - STAGE MANAGER
Ben has been a playing member since 2001 taking a number
of principal parts. He became Society Stage Manager in 2008
for our production of ‘Hello Dolly’ but has continued as a
performer with someone stepping in as acting stage manager
for the week of the show. This year that role will be covered
by Laura Palmer. Ben is on stage again this year and you can
read more about his playing career in the cast profiles.

Obituary

It is with great sadness we report the death of one of our life members, Bryan Dawson.
Bryan became associated with the society when, in his early teens, he accompanied his
father to take photographs of the various shows. He continued his association for over
sixty years holding several positions within the society including Ticket Secretary, Front
of House Manager, Treasurer and eventually President. He also represented the society
on the R.O.D.A committee and served as their treasurer. He died in hospital after a fall in
his home and our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

One-eyed Charley

Calam was never slow to tell a tall tale about the dangers of the stagecoach journeys
she had made and stagecoach travel was, indeed, a dangerous business in the Wild West
- not just because of the Indians but from hold-ups and hazardous conditions too. The
stagecoach drivers were held in high esteem as managing a stagecoach required a high
level of skill. One of the roughest, toughest and most daring ‘whips’ was tobacco chewin’
Charley Parkhurst also known as ‘One-Eyed Charley’ after losing an eye when kicked by
a horse. Asked once how he could see through the dust he said “Fact is, I’ve travelled
over these mountains so often I can tell where the road is by the sound of the wheels”.
Although acknowledged as one of the best drivers in the stage business, it was something
of a different nature that later added to his notoriety.
After almost 30 years, Charley saw that the railroads were cutting into the stagecoach
business and retired from driving to open a saloon. Later, he moved into a cabin in the
woods where, in 1879, he died. It was only when his body was laid out for burial that his

secret was revealed - Charley was a woman.
Born Charlotte Darkey Parkhurst, she was raised in an
orphanage but ran away at the age of 12. She adopted

the name Charley and wore men’s clothes
presumably for her own safety. There was one
added benefit. As Charles Darkey Parkurst,
she was on the official poll list for the 1868
presidential election in California - 43 years
before women there were granted the vote.

The National Operatic
And Dramatic Association

The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA), founded in 1899, is the leading
representative body for amateur theatre in the UK. The Association has a membership of
approximately 2400 amateur theatre groups and over 2000 individual members staging musicals,
operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety of venues ranging from the country’s
leading professional theatres to village halls. Covering a broad spectrum of age ranges, NODA
member societies meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic, dance or
musical, and those involved backstage, front of house or in society administration.

To achieve its aims NODA is divided into eleven regions, each headed by a regional councillor who
sits on the national council (ruling body of the Association), and supported by a network of regional
representatives and officials. These volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association;
the amateur theatre groups themselves and their members.

To provide support and assistance to these volunteers the Association is administered from its office
in Peterborough by a knowledgeable and friendly staff who can deal with any enquiry about amateur
theatre.

Membership of NODA provides theatre groups and individuals with a wide range of benefits
including access to NODA’s advice service at national and regional level, as well as representation
to government, access to funding agencies, direct access to rights holders and the media as well as
access to regional and national conferences, workshops and
seminars to help share information on best practice. NODA
holds an annual residential Summer School (with bursaries
available) offering training from professional tutors in a wide
range of both performance and technical courses as well as
a similar residential academy to provide similar performance
based training for those under 18.

NODA also holds an annual national and regional programme Mission:
