Welcome
... to our 2017 production of ‘White Christmas’. I’m sure that you
will recognise many of the wonderful songs and music of Irving
Berlin. I would like to thank our advertisers and sponsors for their
support. It is very much appreciated. A big “thank you”, also, to you,
our loyal patrons, for your continued support.
Now all that remains is for me to say “sit back and relax”. We hope
that you enjoy the show and that you then have a safe journey
home.
Mavis Sheldon - President
Hello and welcome to all of our audiences - this year we are de-
lighted to perform for you a show new to CAOS and, indeed, to
the Rotherham Civic Theatre. As some of you will know, the show
isn’t about Christmas but does contain the iconic Bing Crosby song,
‘White Christmas’, which gives the show it’s title. All that’s left to say
is sit back, relax and enjoy the show, which we are sure won’t leave
you feeling cold.

The Story
On Christmas Eve, 1944, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis are
entertaining General Waverley and the troops on the
Western Front. Fast forward 10 years and they are still
performing - this time as big stars on the Ed Sullivan
show. Meanwhile, The Haynes Sisters, Betty and Judy, are
preparing for their own show. Judy has persuaded Bob and
Phil to see them and hopes this could be their big break.
Phil and Judy immediately hit it off - Bob and Betty less so
although there is clearly a spark between them. Phil and
Judy decide a little matchmaking is in order.
The next day, the boys head for their holiday in Florida
but, when Betty and Judy appear, Bob realises he has been
tricked and they are actually on the train to Vermont where
the girls are booked to play at an inn. When they arrive,
though, their contract has been cancelled. Because the
weather is so warm, the inn is empty except for the owner,
his grandaughter, Susan, and Martha, the concierge - and
the owner is none other than General Waverley.
It is clear that the inn is struggling financially so Bob and
Phil, seeing a way to pay back the general for all he did for
them during the war, decide to try out their new show at
the inn to attract some customers. After a promising start,
things begin to go awry. Misunderstandings abound and
Betty, believing Bob is plotting to buy the inn, decides to go
back to New York.
When Bob discovers Betty has left, he goes after her but,
because he doesn’t understand why she is angry with him,
he is unable to win her over. Later, Betty discovers that
what she thought was a plot to buy the inn was actually
Bob organising members of the General’s old troops to
come and see the show. She realises she has made a terrible
mistake and reurns to Vermont.
The time has come for the big show. Martha has persuaded
the General to wear his old army uniform and he is surprised
and moved when the men from 151st division arrive. All is
falling into place. Not only have Bob and Betty made up,
Phil and Judy are engaged and, to add the final touch, it
starts to snow.

The Production Team
JAN JACKSON - DIRECTOR
Jan has performed since she was three and has taken many
principal roles, including her favourite part, ‘Peggy Sawyer’, in
‘42nd Street’. Most were with CAOS but she has also performed
with other societies, including Dukinfield AODS, Endellion TC and
Woodseats MTC. She became CAOS Director in 2006 but has
often found herself back on stage as a last minute ‘stand-in’ and is
the first to admit she rather enjoys it.
PETER PIPER - MUSICAL DIRECTOR
Peter played bass guitar for CAOS productions from 2006 until
2013 and in 2012 and 2013 was also MD. He has worked with local
societies Woodseats, Splinters, Sheffield Teachers, Croft, Maltby
and many more. He has been a member of several local bands and
has toured the English Theatres with The Rock’n’Roll Travelling
Theatre Company performing in his own production of ‘Not Fade
Away’ - The Buddy Holly Story.
GAIL RENSHAW - CHOREOGRAPHER
Gail first joined CAOS as a young dancer and was with us for five
years, during which time she played the part of ‘Greta’ in ‘The
Dancing Years’. She went on to become a professional dancer
before opening her own dance school in Ecclesfield. She returned
to CAOS in 2001 to choreograph ‘Anything Goes’ and she has
been our Choreographer ever since. She has been busy recently
helping our cast brush up their skills at her adult tap classes.
DEBBIE SHEPHERD & BEN JACKSON - STAGE MANAGERS
Debbie has performed in amateur theatre since the age of 15
playing numerous lead roles with her favourites being ‘Gigi’, ‘Eliza’
in ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘Maria’ in ‘The Sound Of Music’. She has
directed several shows, including ‘Sweet Charity’ when she also
played the leading role! She has been on the props team with
CAOS since 2011 and played ‘Cousin Nettie’ for us in her favourite
show, ‘Carousel’.
Ben has been a playing member since 2001 and has played a
number of principal parts. He is on stage again this year and you
can read more about him in the cast profiles.

Obituary
It is with great sadness we report the death of a former life member of CAOS, June Dawson. June
was a member of the society for over half a century, having joined us back in the 1950’s. Although
she never performed on stage, she was a committed and hard-working member throughout her
time with us. She started by helping out on the make up and wardrobe team then acted as Ticket
Secretary, Treasurer and, finally, Society Chair until she retired in 2006. She died peacefully a few
weeks ago after a long illness. Our thoughts are with her husband, Bryan, also a life member of
CAOS, and all her family
