SAGA OFFERS A TOUR OF THE ‘STANS’
Clients can explore the ‘Stans’ on Saga’s new Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan tour of Central Asian cities, mountains, canyons and historic sites
– including a mausoleum dedicated to a tragic lover.
Guests on the 10-night tour will learn about the culture and customs of
the region while getting a taste of traditional life and the cities of Almaty, Karakol, Bishkek and Shymkent. Excursions include the Charyn Canyon, the Ala-Archa National Park and Issyk- Kul Lake, the second largest mountain lake in the world after Lake Titicaca in South America.
At the Kazakh ethno village, guests are greeted by a traditional ‘Shashu’ ritual, visit a yurt and enjoy a theatrical performance, while Almaty offers the Green Bazaar market, a memorial park for 28 soldiers who died defending Moscow from the Nazi invasion, the Ascension Cathedral, built entirely from wood without nails and a cable car ride with views of the city.
The red sandstone canyon of the Charyn River is explored by Jeep
on the way to Karakol, home to the Dungan Mosque and a distinctive Orthodox church, where there will be a demonstration of traditional eagle hunting.
Other highlights include the intricately patterned Aisha-bib and Bib Khanum mausoleums, commemorating the tragic story of Aisha who, prohibited from marrying her lover Shaikh Mahmud, rode out to find him, only to die from a snake bite before they met.
Clients will also tour Shymkent city, with its Archaeological Museum, market and museum charting Soviet repression before independence with a visit to the ancient site of the Oasis of Otrar and the mausoleums of the 12th century Sufi master Khoja Ahmed Yasawi and his teacher, Arystan Baba.
Price starts from £2,299 per person for 10 nights with various departures dates from Heathrow including 22nd August, 5th and 26th September, 2020 and 15th and 29th May, 2021.
Price includes VIP door-to-door chauffeur service, return flights, airport taxes, full board accommodation, porterage and tour manager.
The journey to the Kyrgyzstan capital Bishkek will feature the open-air Ethnographic Museum of Cholpon- Ata and rocks carved with scenes of hunting, rituals and animals, dating from 500 BC, and the stay in the city will include a hike through the Ala- Archa National Park.

Holidays’ 2020–2022 Collection features 36 new holidays to choose from.
The collection focuses on the 50 plus market, which is extremely important to Newmarket’s brand. It is a powerful sector to be in, with more than 23 million people aged over 50 in the UK, accounting for more than a third of the population. This demographic also has the highest level of disposable income, offering fantastic potential to those brands who get it right.
The numbers booking escorted tours and cruises in this sector are swelling. It is a highly competitive market, reflected by increasing demand
and growth. For Newmarket, the challenge has been to focus on the right opportunities: no two escorted tours are the same. For example, the introduction of small group tours has appealed to a new customer base that wouldn’t traditionally look to travel on a tour of 40. Newmarket also has a growing number of rail-based escorted tours, appealing to customers looking to tour, but not by coach. These are just two examples of how it is possible to appeal to a wider customer base, without abandoning your core product.
Choice comes in destinations
offered, as well as how the tours are planned, with increased flexibility of duration, hotels and excursions, plus a heightened sense of adventure, nature and exploration.
Different tours offer different travel experiences: clients can stay in a Historic Parador of Hidden Spain or discover the real Croatia from a private yacht on MS Mendula; experience Mother Nature in all her glory as they search for the Northern Lights on Iceland – Reykjavik & The Northern Lights; explore Costa Rica – Nature’s Paradise; or take in the awe-inspiring sight of Halong Bay on Timeless Vietnam.

DARREN PHILLIPS
THE CANNY LAD
Hope you are all well! This month, I thought I would put on my business hat and let you know that I am doing some training and agent promotional visits for Caesars Bluewaters Dubai, QE2 Dubai and the Ajman Tourist Board.
For those of you who are not familiar with Ajman, it is just 17Km, (a 30 minute drive) north from Dubai International Airport. With Emirates’ 20 daily flights from the UK, it is easy to get there. Even though it is the smallest of the seven Emirates, it has loads to offer, with the same sunshine, beaches and clear blue sea.
Clients still have great access to Dubai’s amazing shopping malls, architecture and vibrancy as all Ajman hotels offer courtesy transport to and from Dubai. Ajman has a great mix
of five-star and four-star hotels too, mainly located around the corniche, with the exception of the Oberoi Beach Resort which is in Al Zorah, just across the Ajman creek. It is nestled within 247 acres of lagoons, lush green
mangroves and a protected forest... yes a forest in the UAE! Ajman really is well worth a visit.
Caesars Bluewaters in Dubai is the only non gaming hotel in the Caesars group. It is set on a spectacular island connected to JBR by a walkway and is a resort in itself. The island has its own shopping mall, celebrity restaurants and entertainment areas as well as
a private beach club with views out
to the Arabian gulf. The location is stunning and with a great range of accommodation types on offer, from incredible suites to family apartments and resorts, it has something to suit all your customers.
Darren
QE2 Dubai is docked permanently in Dubai and is the region’s first floating hotel, dining and events destination.
With a history spanning 50 years, it is a very unique and niche product for any clients wanting a stay in Dubai with a maritime connection or maybe they have sailed on her across the Atlantic and want to reminisce - it really is something else!
Thanks for reading!
TUI rejoins SPAA
After a 10 year absence,
TUI UK & Ireland has rejoined the SPAA.
Joanne Dooey, President of the SPAA, commented: “The travel sector has faced a particularly turbulent time
in the past 24 months and we firmly believe that the best approach to addressing these challenges is for the industry to come together with one voice.
“TUI is a household name in Scotland and has built a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience over many years. I believe the company and its employees will make an exceptional contribution to the SPAA.
“Although the industry has faced some testing times, there have been many successes too.
“We’re now seeing something of a resurgence, with consumers returning to High Street travel agents because they seek the security and comfort
of experienced travel advisors to look after their travel arrangements.”
TUI Retail Director Belinda Vazquez said: “We’re really
excited to once again
be a member of SPAA.
We already work closely with our key Scottish travel agent partners and hope that we
can develop these relationships further and work with other members to support the Scottish travel marketplace.
“Our membership will also allow us to develop a stronger relationship between SPAA and our TUI Retail network. We’re looking forward to the opportunities this will bring for all parties.”

IRENE HAYS
OF
Irene Hays came to worldwide attention when she and her husband John, co-owners of Hays Travel, already the largest independent travel agent in the UK, rescued the entire Thomas Cook retail estate - and 2,500 jobs
- in October 2019. Less well known was that Irene had also had a formidable career in public service, holding senior posts in local and national government.
She has been CEO of two UK metropolitan authorities and as both a Director General and Permanent Secretary, she advised Ministers and Secretaries of State in Whitehall.
She has served on a number of governing bodies, including the boards of Sport England, the Football Foundation and the BBC and led a number of high-profile reviews for English Heritage, the Falkland Islands Government and the 2012 Olympic Games among others.
Irene was awarded a CBE in 2008. Now as chair of Hays Travel, she is very much hands on in the current job of overseeing the rapid expansion of the family business, which had sales last year of over £1 billion and currently employs around 5,000 people in some 700 shops around the UK and in its Sunderland head office.
Irene has always supported business start- up and business growth and was recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award for Services to Business in North East England. This helps in providing service and support
to the successful Hays Independence Group and Hays Franchisees. She says, “I love watching our individuals and businesses grow and develop, it’s a real privilege watching the talented people with great ideas and a great work ethic.”
She was instrumental in the Thomas Cook negotiations last year and was described in The Times newspaper by the official liquidator, as ‘top notch’.
JOINT OWNER AND CHAIR OF HAYS TRAVEL, REVEALS HER
SECRETS SUCCESS
Here she describes her ‘secrets of success’:
I don’t think there is a secret to success – it is mainly hard work, passion and keeping your eye on the ball so that eventually you reach your goals. It’s also about
recognising that nobody on their own is as good as all of us. Having fantastic people around you who work as a team for a shared aim can achieve miracles.
Whether in local government or in the travel industry, I’ve always strived to be clear about what the end game is and what part every member of the team can play. Communicating this is essential and ensuring everyone knows - as the late great Alf Ramsey said: ‘every kick of the ball counts’.
So you have to create something of real value that others will want to buy into, believe in it yourself and apply energy and innovation.
I’ve always worked in jobs and projects that improve the lives of others – if making money is your only driver you might always feel short-changed. In Hays Travel, John and I have always supported young people through our apprenticeship scheme and the Hays Travel Foundation and we encourage all our people to support the communities where they are.
I think trust is one of the most important factors in success. If you are true to yourself – authentic and transparent – you will win the trust and respect you need to achieve your business goals.
Finally, focus on the positive. There is always something good to celebrate if you look for it. Even when you get bad news or are knocked-back, remember to look for the silver lining and the learning because that’s what will make you stronger for the next challenge which comes along.

Loganair safeguards 16
regional services
Following the sad demise of Flybe, Loganair has announced that it will take over 16 former Flybe routes in order to safeguard UK regional connectivity.
The airline will be adding nearly 400 new flights each week and has opened a special recruitment line for former Flybe employees seeking to continue their aviation careers with Loganair.
The 16 routes – from existing Loganair base airports at Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Newcastle – will be launched progressively over the next four months.
IATA requests
suspension of slot rules
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has asked aviation regulators worldwide to suspend the rules governing use of airport slots for the 2020 season, due to the impact of COVID-19 (the Coronavirus).
Around 43% of all passengers depart from over 200 slot coordinated airports worldwide. The current rules for slot allocation mean that airlines must operate at least 80% of their allocated slots and failure to do so means the airline loses its right to the slot the next equivalent season.
The COVID-19 crisis is having a severe impact on air traffic, with airlines experiencing serious declines
in demand including: a carrier experiencing a 26% reduction across their entire operation in comparison
to last year; a hub carrier reporting bookings to Italy down 108% as bookings collapse to zero and refunds grow; many carriers reporting 50% no-shows across several markets; future bookings softening and carriers are reacting with measures such as crew being given unpaid leave, freezing of pay increase and planes being grounded. It is currently estimated that global revenue losses for passenger business will be between $63 billion and $113 billion.
Suspending the requirement for the entire season would mean that airlines can respond to market conditions with appropriate capacity levels, avoiding any need to run empty services in order to maintain slots and aircraft can be reallocated to other routes or parked.
Extra commission from
Holland America Line
Holland America Line is offering agents an extra 4% commission on any 2020 bookings made during March until the end of April.
The cruise line has also launched its new ‘Pack These Values’ campaign, offering customers free cruise gratuities, reduced 3rd/4th and kids fares, free onboard spending money of up to $300 per suite on suite bookings and low deposits from £99 per person on select 2020 cruises.
The promotion is backed by a brand new ‘Book with Confidence’ message to help agents sell 2020 cruises. Wendy Lahmich, Director of Sales comments: “‘Book with Confidence’ enables guests to make new bookings for 2020 cruises throughout March until 30th April with absolute confidence, since if they have to cancel for any reason, they will receive a Future Cruise Credit in the amount of their deposit and any cancellation fees, up to 30 days before departure.”
