Travel Matters speaks to
Pieter Elbers
President and CEO, KLM
KLM have consistently led from the front in terms of lessening its environmental impact and taking action to improve
its sustainability and fly and operate responsibly. What are your plans going forward for this hugely important issue?
KLM is a frontrunner in the aviation industry when it comes to sustainability and we are always looking for innovative ways to further reduce our impact on the environment.
We are proud that the Air France-KLM Group has recently been ranked number one in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index. This is the 15th consecutive year that the Group has been placed at the top end of the rankings and confirms the company wide commitment to our sustainable transformation. Some concrete examples of how we
plan to achieve this include the continued introduction
of more fuel efficient aircraft such as the B787-10, the development of Europe’s first sustainable aviation fuel plant in the Netherlands and our partnership with the Technical University in Delft to build a model plane for the future, the Flying V. However, sustainability is not a one-airline topic and this is why, with our recent Fly Responsibly initiative,
we are calling upon all stakeholders within the aviation industry to collaborate. We have offered our Gold Standard C02 offsetting programme to other airlines free of charge and free of branding to encourage more people to offset their flight emissions. Sustainability, like safety, is a topic which airlines cannot compete on, we need to work together towards a more sustainable future.
KLM has recently celebrated its 100th birthday with a history of excellence, innovation and great customer service based on its outstanding hub network - what do you intend to do to ensure that the airline continues to succeed, prosper and be profitable?
A company only reaches its 100th anniversary through two elements: loyal customers and great staff and what makes KLM so special is the authentic way in which we are able
to combine the two. An open, welcoming and pragmatic approach is deeply embedded in the DNA of KLM staff
and this has always been at the very basis of what we call
NOVEMBER 2019

‘customer centricity’. At KLM, we take our customer’s needs as the leading factor for all our decision making. Looking forward, we will continue to introduce initiatives to make the travel experience as convenient and hassle free as possible. Our technological transformation, is one of the key drivers
in this process. We will continue to be where our customers are, whether that is Facebook, Whatsapp or WeChat. We will continue to ensure a smooth booking process on our website and apps and a seamless transfer process at our award winning hub at Schiphol airport.
At KLM, we believe that medium- and long-term production of sustainable aviation fuel is extremely important for the airline industry to achieve its carbon dioxide reduction goals. We
are very pleased to announce that we have recently signed
a letter of intent with Microsoft where they will purchase an amount of SAF equivalent to all flights taken by employees between the USA and Netherlands on KLM and Delta Airlines. This is an important step and the kind of partnership we hope to replicate across our global network to ensure a sustainable future for the aviation industry.
How important is the UK market to KLM?
The UK market has always been of huge importance for
KLM. In fact, KLM’s first ever commercial flight was operated between London Croydon and Amsterdam on May 17 1920. The aircraft, leased from AT &T by KLM, was flown by the British pilot Jerry Shaw, carrying two British journalists. Today, the UK is the country with the most departure points on KLM’s global network. KLM offers passengers up to 60 flights a day from 16 airports across the UK. We operate from four departure points in Scotland alone. Our dedicated UK account management team are spread across the regions in which we operate and this is vital to maintaining our strong relationship with the UK travel trade. Our strong regional presence is KLM’s unique selling point in the UK and we
are proud to continue to provide our UK customers with worldwide connectivity from the comfort of their local airport.
Thanks to our strategic partnership with Virgin Atlantic and Delta Airlines, we are now in a position to offer even more choice to UK customers. Once our expanded joint venture officially launches in 2020, we will be in a position to offer 300 daily transatlantic services, accounting for 24% of the total transatlantic capacity. This means that the UK will become the third largest market for Air France-KLM.
What benefits for the airline and your customers will the extended joint venture with Delta and Virgin Atlantic bring?
With a common ambition to offer our customers memorable and high-quality experiences, it only makes sense for KLM, Air France, Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic to join hands and strengthen our partnership across the Atlantic. Through this unique collaboration, we can share our strengths and take one common, customer-centric approach. By increasing the number of flights between Europe and North America, we can offer our customers even more destinations, streamlined journeys and improved loyalty programme benefits. As of 4th June 2019, Virgin Atlantic has joined our corporate loyalty programme, bluebiz. Our joint SME customers now benefit from a unique commercial offer adapted to their business travel needs. The extended joint venture also provides our individual customers with reciprocal frequent flyer benefits, including the ability to earn and redeem miles across all carriers. Looking forward, customers will also benefit from the co-location of facilities at key hub airports to improve connectivity and access to each carrier’s airport lounges for premium passengers. We are confident that this strategic partnership will be well received by our UK customers.
What can we expect from KLM in the future in respect of its ground and in the air product in a highly competitive market place?
Looking to the future, we will continue to invest in our product, both on the ground and in the air. We will continue the rollout of our on board Wi-Fi offering and continue to give our staff the digital tools to recognize and acknowledge our customers at every touchpoint throughout the customer journey. We look forward to the grand opening of our new state of the art KLM Crown Lounge at Schiphol at the end
of this month. The lounge features designated areas for relaxation, work, socialising, fine dining and entertainment. Private nap rooms and shower facilities will be available for when travelling through various time zones takes its toll. The lounge will also feature a fine dining restaurant and bar and an outside terrace overlooking the apron, which is unique in the world. At KLM, our ambition is to be the most efficient, innovative and customer centric network carrier in Europe.

Hi there Peeps!
You know it’s nearly Christmas when all the awards invites start to flood in. Will need to dust down my tux and bowtie in preparation! Before that however, I did a whirlwind world tour taking in North America, Asia, Europe and Africa in a busy month with more lovely travel events keeping my social secretary on their toes!
It was off to the fabulous continent of Africa to start with, as a guest of Katie Winn
(the African Queen herself and hostess with the mostess) for a great evening learning all about the amazing destinations in Africa that they feature. The presentation (great popcorn Katie!) totally inspired me and I must check out this part of the world soon! Also in attendance was Nadia from Uganda Tourism as well as Zoe, who represents Cape Grace Hotel in Cape Town and various others, who talked passionately about their amazing destinations.
I then headed east to Asia and all things Wendy Wu, with Wayne Russell and John Booty. This was one of the best presentations I have been to! Wayne took us on a journey across the continent, focusing on China and then on to the hot destination of the moment – Japan. Was totally sold on the benefits of travelling on a Wendy Wu tour, especially when I heard that they take all the hassle out of getting a Chinese visa for clients.
Good ol’ US of A was next on the list. Visit USA came to town with a huge range of suppliers including airlines, hotels, tourist boards and entertainment companies. Speed dating (not my usual type of dating) was 8 minutes per supplier, offering loads of information! The minute I walked into the room, I felt I was in America – everything was there, from a yellow NY taxi cab, Uncle Sam himself, as well as burgers, hot dogs and apple pie all in abundance... I was one happy bear!
Looking resplendent in my lederhosen, I was in the mood for attending the Events for Travel Germany event. The first person I met was Miss Loganair – Donna McHugh - they fly to Düsseldorf you know. There was a great selection of suppliers and a big agent turn out. They even fed us some fabulous German food – bratwurst goes down well with a cheeky Riesling. I was sad to say auf wiedersehen at the end of a lovely evening.
Speak soon!

Escorted touring:
it’s all about connection
By EDWINA COPPOCK, Head of Trade Sales at Titan Travel
An escorted tour is a great way to travel for many reasons – they’re hassle-free, expertly designed and they allow customers to experience the very best of a destination. But
one element which doesn’t often get
a mention is the human aspect. This type of holiday is all about connections - whether that’s with the agent who finds and books the ideal itinerary, fellow travellers, the tour manager, or the local people customers meet out in their destination. It’s what helped
to make Titan so successful when it first started 40 years ago – and it’s still relevant today.
The personal touch
It all starts with that first contact
and that’s where agents play such
an important role. There’s only so much you can glean from a website; sometimes people just want a chat. It’s a chance to air ideas, to ask for recommendations, to find out the finer details of a holiday.
Escorted tours aren’t cheap and there’s a lot to consider when choosing an itinerary and a company to travel with. Agents have a wealth of knowledge ready to share – a customer can learn more in a single consultation with an experienced agent than they could from days of research online.
Of course, our own travel advisors are just a phone call away for those extra queries or complex bookings. As the leading specialist in escorted touring, we’re well placed to offer that extra level of expertise.
It might be details of regional flights available, more information on excursions or optional extras, or just a bit of reassurance on the suitability of the tour.
While customers are away, they’ll have their tour manager with them throughout, so they’ve got that personal point of contact for any questions, no matter how small. Many of our loyal customers have told us that they choose their next holiday based on where their favourite tour manager will be going!
The rise in multi-
generational travel
Interestingly, we’ve recently seen a significant increase in the number of multi-generational bookings, such as grown-up children joining their parents on a river cruise and single parents taking children in their late teens
or early 20s away for a stress-free adventure.
Escorted tours might not be the first type of holiday you’d think about when booking this type of customer. But when you think about it, it’s an ideal opportunity – tours are mostly suitable for all ages (and we give ours a ‘pace’ rating so that customers can be sure it’s OK from an ability perspective) and they allow families to spend quality time together while exploring some fantastic parts of the world.
Shared experiences
The social side of an escorted trip is what makes it – and it’s something
I feel should be used more in selling this type of holiday. We can offer some amazing experiences on our tours,
but what makes those experiences so special is the fact that they’re shared. Even after the moment has passed, customers will be reliving it with each other, comparing photos and swapping stories.
For solo travellers, having this ready- made group of travel companions is a real benefit of escorted touring. In fact, our research has shown that the group aspect is often the key deciding factor when it comes to choosing a holiday.
Tours also offer the opportunity to meet and interact with local people
– and this is something we’ve been incorporating more into our itineraries over the past few years. Our small- group tours in particular are great for these types of experience, offering the chance to join an Ethiopian family for coffee or enjoy a cooking demo and lunch at a local’s home in Vietnam.
This element of ‘connection’ is something that I believe will become increasingly important for the escorted holiday industry over the coming years. Having the right product – and the right people – will ensure brands are well placed to meet the demand
for a more personalised booking and travelling experience.

NEWS
The Canny Lad...
DaRRen PHiLLiPs
Well, we are getting nearer to the Christmas slow down and a chance to get all the admin and winter cleaning done, ready for the January rush, eh?
I have just got back from Dubai.... again, but I think it could be my last time there. I have been over 40 times now and the change has been incredible - not just in the landscape and visitor numbers - but with the pricing too.
With the new tax and poor exchange rate, it’s not as good value as it was. With a pint costing around £12, a cocktail £20 and no change from £60 for a decent meal, it’s more expensive now for the British holidaymaker. I like to go to Long’s Bar, but there were only a few people there, same with Le Meridien Village Terrace - maybe it’s a sign of the times?
Dubai is still a great destination however, for a few days stopover and of course, guaranteed sunshine!
Flights to and from Dubai were great on Emirates, as per usual. The crew are always happy to chat, especially if there is a fellow Geordie on board! I was surprised at how full the flight was compared to the destination - maybe the majority of passengers were just transiting.
On to the GRAFTAS now. With over 200
attending and a a
new venue, the e
Crowne Plaza
hotel, it is sure
to be another
fab night,
rewarding the
best agents and suppliers we have in this great industry. As well as the food, drink and entertainment, of course. There will be a nice surprise on the night and all is going to plan!
Don’t forget the Geordie Ball on Thursday 12th March - get it in your diaries and book the next day off. It will be the 20th Ball and it’s going to be the best one ever!
Happy selling, as always and I look forward to seeing you all at the GRAFTAS. If you haven’t got a ticket yet, let me know and I will add you to my waitlist.
Cheers me dears,
Darren

Diane Risk
Travel Trade Consultant, George Best Belfast City Airport
Firstly, what is your role with Belfast City Airport?
I’m a Travel Trade and Corporate Relations Consultant, which means
I work with the travel industry and larger companies to help them meet their travel needs through the services offered by Belfast City Airport.
Why is Belfast City Airport a good choice for inbound and outbound passengers?
In addition to being voted the UK and Ireland’s Most Convenient Airport
and the UK’s Most Punctual Airport, located only five minutes (3km) from Belfast City Centre, Belfast City Airport has recently invested £15 million into upgrading its facilities, making each journey as hassle-free as possible.
The modern and updated facilities impact both inbound and outbound passengers, with more retail options, passenger seating and refurbished taxi and bus ranks to ensure convenience and accessibility for everyone.
Northern Ireland has seen an increase in overseas visitors, including holiday visitors - what is driving this trend?
I believe there are two strands to the rise in overseas visitors – on the one hand, the general tourism interest has seen a significant increase due to experiences such as the Game of Thrones tours and Titanic Exhibition.
On the other hand, we have also seen an increase in conference and events visitors to Belfast and Northern Ireland
due to Belfast’s vibrant, welcoming nature and cost-effectiveness. There has also been a significant increase
in inbound investment by businesses in Northern Ireland, with 23 new large businesses investing in the region in 2018. Importantly, those businesses aren’t just investing initially – over 75% of businesses are reinvesting, which
is testament to the success that they achieve in the region.
Describe Northern Ireland in three words to someone who has never visited the region.
It’s hard to only pick three! We’re a friendly bunch and the atmosphere
is welcoming – not to mention how accessible most places are and the great food you can try. Indeed, at the end of last year, Northern Ireland was voted the Best Food Destination in the world at the International Travel and Tourism Awards!
Belfast was named the world’s most Business Friendly City of its size. Why do you think it is such an attractive location?
Belfast is small enough that you’re never far from where you need to be. Our enjoyment of face to face relationship building means that businesses feel well looked after and enjoy returning for multiple visits.
The general value for money coupled with a wide range of accommodation choices is further motivation for businesses, not to mention our extremely talented workforce, especially in the areas of IT and Fintech.
If someone had 24 hours in Belfast, how would you advise they spent it?
As Belfast City Airport is conveniently located only five minutes from the city centre and Belfast’s top hotels, visitors can start exploring as soon as they step off the plane.
I would recommend taking an open
bus tour which features Belfast’s top attractions and tourist spots, including the Peace Walls, Titanic Belfast and Stormont Parliament Buildings. There is so much to choose from and a bus tour will give an overview of what’s on offer.
For foodies, a food tour with Taste & Tour – recently named NI’s Best Small Visitor Attraction – is ideal to explore the history and roots behind our award- winning produce.
Lastly, what piece of advice would you give to travel trade consultants dealing with customers considering a trip to Northern Ireland?
Try to maximise the customers’
time here, especially if they are only visiting for a day or two, by flying into the heart of the city. Find the best accommodation and entertainment options by speaking to someone local – we’re always happy to chat about our recommendations!

and destinations served, please visit belfastcityairport.com.

Sail away with...
Cunard
On board Queen Victoria
When you think of Cunard, you imagine quality, tradition and elegance. A recent first time visit on the Queen Victoria cemented this, but also revealed that the Queen Victoria and Cunard in general, offer lots more.
Whilst you can expect fine dining and amazing attention to detail with Cunard’s White Star Service, this is matched with a truly quirky British style that means you can seamlessly move from a top class meal in one
of their exclusive restaurants to a fully fitted out traditional pub - the Golden Lion - where you can enjoy real ale, bangers and mash!
The British style continues with the Signature Cunard experience of a Godiva or champagne Afternoon Tea, served daily at 3.30pm in The Queens Room, by white-gloved waiters offering service and attention to detail which goes above and beyond expectations.
Cunard’s iconic journeys, including Transatlantic Crossings and Round the World cruises are matched by the amazing entertainment venues on board. This includes The Royal Court Theatre, complete with red velvet seats and private boxes, which literally transports you to the West End of London.
As well as the iconic itineraries, passengers can also choose from
a number of special Event Voyages including for example, Transatlantic Fashion Week; Dance the Atlantic with the English National Ballet
and a unique cruise celebrating international World Space Week.
Against a backdrop of grand sweeping staircases, opulent furnishings and lush carpets, all reminiscent of the 1920’s, Queen Victoria offers a choice of dining venues, cocktail bars, a fitness centre, spa, children’s facilities and outdoor pools.
For customers that want to cruise in style, with luxury included, then Cunard is an ideal choice.

Turkish Delight with Abercrombie & Kent
FaM TRiP ReVieW
by HaYLeY MCLOUGHLin, Norseman Travel
I was 11 when I first visited Turkey. It was in the late 80’s when tourism was quite limited and I vowed I would never go back. However, when Abercrombie & Kent invited me to Istanbul, my history and architecture geek took over and I just couldn’t say no!
Edinburgh Airport is brilliant for us Northerners - train to Haymarket and then the air coach from outside the station - it’s a doddle! After a quick photo call with a certain little bear
and after a brief visit to the lounge,
we departed. Turkish Airlines were efficient, the flight was smooth, the seats were comfortable with decent legroom and there was a good range of entertainment. Istanbul Airport is huge - it took well over 5 minutes to taxi to the terminal and an even longer walk to the baggage reclaim!
The location of the superb Four Seasons Sultanahmet is perfect for sightseeing in the Hippodrome area
- Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cisterns etc. We had two busy days exploring these and the stunning Topkapı Palace as well as a ferry trip across the busy Bosphorus.
Highlights
A 90-minute flight inland to Uçhisar and the mind-blowing Cappadocia plateau, where we explored the “fairy chimneys”, underground cities and ancient rock carved churches at Göreme. I have never stayed anywhere like the Argos in Cappadocia before, literally built in and around ancient caves - it was a little spooky at first! The hilly cobbled streets and steps may prove difficult for those with mobility problems but it’s certainly worth it for the magnificent views.
The wine tasting and private dining experience was also very special.
A short flight to Izmir took us back
in time. Ephesus was amazing but extremely busy and hot. However, having our guide and knowing we were walking the same pathways as Cleopatra, Mark Antony, Alexander the Great and St Paul fuelled our energy and imagination. Transferring to Bodrum we checked into the beautiful Marmara Hotel with great views over the town and marina. We were treated to an exclusive visit to the Nautical Institute of Archaeology, which was fascinating and just perfect for history lovers. After a walk around the new
m
marina area, we enjoyed the most
d
delicious lunch cooked in front of us
at the BagArasi restaurant.
Back to Istanbul, to the Dolmabahce Palace and Grand Bazaar for shopping (of course!). A private yacht charter on the river showed both
the European and Asian sides off beautifully and we even had dolphins make an appearance to top off our champagne experience. The perfect way to end our trip was a sumptuous dinner hosted by the Ciragan Palace Kempinski. This exquisite luxury hotel was the only Ottoman Imperial palace built on the banks of the Bosphorus and home for our final 2 nights!
summary
Of course, travelling with A&K means the best of everything: award-winning guide, fantastic service, amazing experiences and impressive hotels.
It was a superb trip, with a brilliant group and if I could do it all again tomorrow, I would. We had the
most amazing time. I would highly recommend Istanbul for a city break as there are so many things to see and do and the luxury hotels are simply stunning!

Travel Matters speaks to
The Hon. kerrie symmonds
Barbados Minister of Tourism and International Transport
Who is the target
market for Barbados?
Everyone! Barbados might be considered a premium product, but it can also be experienced in a cost- effective way. Barbados is a very safe and friendly island, so, I would say to agents looking to send their clients here, that even if they are travelling all-inclusive, don’t forget to experience the real Barbados.
Many of the exclusive hotels tell
me that their guests, even though they are full board, will take a walk into town, buy street food and sit
on a bench and just enjoy the local culture and its people and we want to encourage more of this. Holiday makers who do this are more likely to be repeat visitors and we currently have more of these than anywhere else outside of Disney World!
We know that once your clients have connected with the Island, they will find it almost irresistible.
How important is
sustainability for you?
Exceptionally important and we have been taking some very serious steps. In April this year we completely reworked the Town and Country Planning Act meaning you now have to build in accordance with certain codes that are sensitive to and protective of the environment.
Reckless use of the beach fronts isn’t allowed and buildings have to be a certain distance from the sea and built in a way that’s condusive to coastal conservation which is critical.
We are also very keen to become 100% fossil fuel free by 2030 and in April we put a ban on the importation of single use plastics as they were finding their way back into the
sea. Businesses have come to understand that if we are going to
do tourism seriously, it has to be in
a sustainable way. Truth is - it’s not just sustainability for environmental purposes - it’s also inextricably linked with sustainability of local jobs.
What about flights and
air access to Barbados?
BA, is of course, the legacy airline and has long serviced the Island. There is a lot of organic growth coming out of Scotland and Ireland and we are actively working on developing this and looking at direct flights from Scotland. We hope we can make this happen but right now, the key thing is connectivity.
We have been discussing a few possibilities, particularly with
the Virgin acquisition of Flybe which gives you a regional carrier connecting to Manchester, then direct to Barbados. I have also settled a deal with Lufthansa which will fly into Barbados directly under the Eurowings banner via Frankfurt.
What about the cruise market and home porting business?
This is a major revenue driver for
us. Home porting business gives us a pre and post stay element. Very often people will fly in and include
a day or two at either end of their cruise to make sure they make their connection and get to see the island.
This then supports the local hotel sector as they are not as likely to book all-inclusive for their short stay – instead they book a hotel or B&B and will be out exploring, which in turn helps support the local economy.
As charming as it is, Barbados doesn’t take too long to fall in love with. That means that clients will return for a longer trip the next time and will be warmly welcomed!

NEWS
More flights to Lapland
with Finnair
Finnair has boosted services to Lapland to meet the surge in demand from Scottish customers, following the collapse of Thomas Cook.
The capacity increase means as many as three extra flights a day will be running between the Finnish capital of Helsinki and top resorts in Lapland, such
as Rovaniemi, Kittilä and Ivalo. In total, more than 23 extra Finnair flights will operate from 20th December, 2019 to 5th January, 2020. Flights from Edinburgh
to Rovaniemi, Kittilä and Ivalo via Helsinki, start from £289 return, including all taxes and charges.
For Finnair customers looking to experience a traditional snowy winter, with reindeers and snow activities, such as skiing and sledding, there are 15 additional flights to Rovaniemi - the home of Santa Claus. Another four flights will operate to both the Lappish villages of Kittilä and Ivalo.
Brits admit never taking out travel insurance
New ABTA research reveals more than 3.5 million British adults, who have been on a winter sports holiday, have never taken out travel insurance to cover themselves for activities such as skiing and snowboarding.
ABTA Members have reported more than 200 significant injuries amongst British holidaymakers in the past ski season – however, these figures represent just those cases reported by ABTA Members and the association believes the total number of incidents could be much higher. A number of incidents resulted from other activities including snowboarding, bum boarding and tobogganing.
Those aged between 25-34 years have, on average, experienced more winter sports injuries than any other age group. One in eight (12%) 25-34 year olds, who have been on a winter sports holiday, have travelled with someone who has had a major injury from the slopes, requiring hospital treatment. A further 6% have had a major accident themselves. Those aged 45-54 years are most likely to take out holiday cover, as more than half (51%) of the age group who have ever been on a winter sports trip say they always take out travel insurance, compared to just over a quarter (28%) of 18-24 year olds. To help skiers and snowboarders prepare for their holiday, ABTA has teamed up with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and The Ski Club of Great Britain to provide some top tips, from pre-departure to après ski.
