Discover the wonders of Iceland
With so much to see
The very ‘best time to visit’ Iceland depends on what you want to do and see, with options ranging from black sand beaches to ice-blue glaciers and multicoloured northern lights, or simply kicking it with the locals in swimming pools, bars and concert halls.
You can experience a lot on a short stay, but be warned: once you arrive, you might not want to leave. There’s something unique to see in every season, so let’s go through them.
In spring, white turns to green
Nature gets a boost in spring when snow melts and the landscapes turn green. Easter falls in spring and there are a lot of celebrations around that time. Puffins arrive to nest in Iceland from mid-April until August. Whales have a similar schedule, visiting from around April
to September. There’s a lively energy throughout the country as the days are getting longer and anticipation for summer is in the air.
The magical midnight sun
Summers in Iceland are glorious and this is the
most popular time to visit. To get the ultimate Iceland experience head out in nature for a walk under the midnight sun. There’s a fantastic range of festivals as well as endless opportunities to explore the gorgeous countryside. Visit the highlands or drive the 822-mile Ring Road and see the entire island. Each region
has its distinctive features and is more beautiful than the next.
You’ll fall for us
With autumn comes darker nights and a burst of beautiful colours. Northern lights start to become visible as we head into winter. The annual sheep round-up known as réttir is held around the country in September. It gives great insight into rural life, and even city kids partake in the festivities. It also gives great insight into the importance of Iceland’s iconic woollen sweater, the lopapeysa. Fall festivals include Reykjavík’s jazz, film and Iceland noir events, but the biggest is the Iceland Airwaves live music festival. It takes place in November with a guaranteed eclectic mix of local and international artists – this is the one you shouldn’t miss!
Our winter wonderland
If you’re dreaming of seeing the northern lights, winter is the time to visit. You need dark, clear skies to spot them, so October to March is ideal. There’s
a great variety of fun, icy activities to do during the winter months, including snowmobiling on a glacier, skiing and snowboarding, and snowshoe walks across frozen lakes. If your dream is to visit an ice cave, plan to do that between November and March.
Many people visit over Christmas and New Year, drawn by Reykjavík’s fairy-light appeal and cosiness overload. Fireworks are lit throughout the capital on New Year’s Eve and it’s truly a sight to see.
Iceland is home to some of the largest glaciers in Europe and has some of the world’s most active volcanoes –
so the landscape is truly unique. All year round, it’s easy to tap into what makes this place special. There’s simply no bad time to visit.

Enjoy the journey as much as the destination

Travel Matters speaks to
CAMERON BENGERT
Head of Operations
Clyde Travel Management
Tell us how the domestic and international business/commercial travel market has performed post covid.
By the time travel restrictions were finally lifted in early 2022, it seemed that people were eager to meet face- to-face once again. The result was a sudden increase in demand. Recovery will vary by industry, but overall, demand for business travel has returned and stabilized at a new normal.
Is there the confidence for companies to allow their staff to travel again?
Absolutely. After a prolonged period of testing how to run a company entirely remotely, it has become evident that there is a strong desire for richer collaboration and relationship- building that can only be achieved through physical human interaction. With the stabilization of travel restrictions, companies have gained confidence in allowing their employees to make travel arrangements once again. In the maritime and offshore energy industries, our customers are now able to return to more consistent operations with crews being able to travel more freely once again.
Are companies looking to send their staff to overseas conferences, exhibitions, meetings etc?
With advancements in technology, it has never been
easier to connect and collaborate with people from all over the world, but the need for physical human interaction remains crucial. Hybrid and remote working has provided companies with opportunities to offer flexibility and recruit skilled workers from outside their physical locations. Teams regularly communicate through virtual calls but recognize the importance of coming together to build relationships with customers and suppliers, tackle complex problems, and network at industry conferences.
Clyde is in the process of opening a Groups department in Sweden in response to strong demand for meetings, conferences and exhibitions.
Have clients’ attitudes to travel changed?
I believe that clients are now seeking purpose in their travel more than ever before the pandemic. Instead of travelling as a routine for a weekly meeting, people want to make the most of their investment in time and money spent away from home. They are now combining meetings with other networking opportunities with customers and suppliers to ensure that their travel has a greater value.
Do clients now have different expectations of you and the services you provide to them?
The Covid-19 pandemic has changed our clients’ expectations and as travel experts, we have taken it upon ourselves to ensure that they are well-informed of all country entry requirements. This includes information on passport, visa, and Covid-19 or other health requirements.
Our clients in the shipping and energy industries rely
on us to advise them on the necessary requirements
for successful crew changes. At Clyde, we prioritize our clients’ needs and to ensure that our customers have the information they need before they travel, we provide a live- link of entry requirements for every ticket we book.
Have you implemented any other staff working changes/policies?
Our company has implemented a hybrid working model, which allows our employees to work from home for two days per week while working in the office for the remaining three days. We have found that having the flexibility to work from home, coupled with adequate time in the office for collaboration, works well for us at the moment.
What would you say are the biggest challenges you currently face?
In 2023, there are signs that airlines will be driving NDC adoption for business travel. The technology used to access NDC content must be highly serviceable and developed in-depth as business travel plans can change or be cancelled last minute.
NDC provides new opportunities to personalise content and book ancillary services for customers and Clyde has invested in proprietary technology over the last several years to connect directly with airlines and take advantage of these long-term opportunities. However, in the short- term, there will be technological challenges for both TMCs and airlines as the market shifts towards NDC.
Are you confident for the future?
I am not just confident, but also excited about the future of our industry. It brings me great joy to see the new recruits and apprentices who are bringing fresh energy and ideas to our business. I feel responsible for creating an exciting and memorable experience for the next generation of travel professionals entering the industry.

AIR ASTANA RELAUNCHES
STOPOVER PROGRAMME
Air Astana has relaunched its stopover programme, allowing passengers travelling to India, China,
Korea and Thailand, as well as other destinations in Kazakhstan, the chance to explore Almaty or Astana for just £17, when connecting through Kazakhstan for 10 hours or more.
Passengers connecting for a minimum of 10 hours through Almaty or Astana can reserve one night’s accommodation and breakfast, allowing them to explore the destination either independently or on a guided tour for approximately £30 in either city.
Hotels on offer in the programme include: Holiday Inn, Kazzhol, Shera Park Inn, Hotel Almaty, Hotel Kazakhstan in Almaty. Park Inn and Wyndham Garden in Astana.
A round-trip transfer to the airport is also included in
the cost and passengers simply need to book these arrangements online, a minimum of 4 days (96 hours) prior to their arrival and submit their ticket reservation number and hotel selection. Upon completion of the booking process, a confirmation voucher will be sent to their email address.
Richard Ledger, Senior Regional Manager at Air Astana said: “We know that long-haul travel can be tiring and that time spent inside an airport for extended periods of time can add a certain level of stress for passengers who seek fresh air and many would prefer to briefly experience
new destinations.
“This revived programme is ideal for such passengers, who would prefer to stretch their legs, explore beyond the airport and importantly, take time to sleep in a comfortable bed rather than an airport lounge.
“Pre-pandemic, it was an incredibly popular scheme and more than 23,000 customers from across the network used the programme in 2019. We look forward to welcoming new and returning visitors to Kazakhstan.”

WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE
DO YOU HAVE ANY HIDDEN TALENTS?
I enjoy cooking and crafts but am not particularly talented in either.
WHAT ABOUT A FAVOURITE FILM?
Definitely Pretty Woman - it proves that dreams can come true.
YOU WERE EVER GIVEN?
I can remember my Dad telling me to never depend on the financial support of the bank to help run my business, as in his words “they will only lend you an umbrella when it’s not raining“. Dad helped me set up the business in 1984 but he sadly died in 1989.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE
WHAT WAS THE LAST CONCERT
PART OF THE JOB?
THAT YOU ATTENDED?
My favourite part of the job is continually thinking of new ideas to improve our retail shops and inspirational trips to entice our clients.
CAN YOU TELL US ONE THING THAT PEOPLE WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU
I left my local grammar school on my 16th birthday with no qualifications and am now Chair of the Board of Governors in the same school. It shows how skills can be acquired despite lack of academic results!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESTINATION?
This has changed during different periods of my life but I have great memories of my trip to the Maldives last year to celebrate another big birthday! Just having that feeling that there is nowhere else in the world to compare it to makes it extra special.
HAVE YOU EVER BOOKED ANYONE FAMOUS?
I have dealt with people from Northern Ireland who would be famous. The most important thing for me is respect and as long as that works both ways,
I am happy.
Rob Lamberti – a world class George Michael tribute act. I am fanatical about George.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE KARAOKE SONG?
‘I Will Survive’ by Gloria Gaynor - after the last few years, it’s even more relevant.
IF COST, TIME AND DISTANCE WERE NO OBJECT, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR PERFECT DAY?

WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL REQUEST
FROM A CLIENT THAT YOU HAVE EVER HAD?
The most recent one was an out of hours call at midnight from a client who wanted a call back five hours later. He was afraid of missing his flight and didn’t trust his alarm or the hotel concierge!

DARREN PHILLIPS...
VIEW FROM THE NORTH EAST
Hi guys, hope you are all very busy with the lates market.
I remember when I had my agency, my busiest and best month was always May, so hopefully it’s still the same out there. The prices of some of the late deals are amazing at the moment and you can see that travel is back to full swing, giving us that buzz we all love when selling or advising on holidays.
And with the new flights from Newcastle to Athens, four airlines now flying to Turkey each week in summer, Loganair’s expansion, Aer Lingus to Belfast City, jet2.com and jet2 city breaks Norway programme, along with over 70 other destinations on offer from Newcastle International airport, there are even more reasons to fly from your local airport!
Now I have got some exciting news to share with you... I have started a temporary contract through Flexi Reps with Newmarket Holidays for 15 months, covering
the North East, North West, Merseyside, Yorkshire, Humberside and the Isle of Man!
I am so excited to be part of their team on the road!
I remember when Mark Riddle was the only rep for them. Now look how they have grown in the 40 years they have been operating - a big team on the road and in
the head office.
I have always been a great supporter of Newmarket Holidays, so it’s a huge privilege to be given the chance to join such a dynamic tour operator. Agents in my area can look out for me coming in and talking all things Newmarket, with escorted tours in the UK, Europe,
The Americas, Africa and Asia, as well as ocean and river cruise products too!
Exciting times ahead and I am so pleased to be a part of it!
Really looking forward to seeing you all soon, Happy selling,
Darren

For the first time, AE Expeditions will offer two itineraries to the Chilean Fjords: a 14-day fly/sail Antarctic Explorer voyage departing 1st March 2025 and a 13-day Spirit of Antarctica expedition departing 13th March, 2025.

Also new is the In Shackleton’s Footsteps, a 20-day voyage that departs from Ushuaia, Argentina on 16th March, 2025 and retraces the journey of the Endurance, venturing into the Weddell Sea and then onto Elephant Island, where Shackleton and his men finally reached land after 497 days at sea. The voyage then continues across the Scotia Sea to South Georgia.
The programme also includes sailings designed specifically for photographers, (novice or amateur expert); those
with an active commitment to Citizen Science; as well as itineraries that offer an immersive Antarctica experience, above, below and on the water. Shorter, fly/sail or sail/fly combinations are also available during the height of the Antarctic summer, January-February 2025.
For trade partners, AE Expeditions is offering an early bird offer with savings of up to 25% off voyages available until sold out. Terms and conditions apply.

Vice President Sales, UK, Europe, Middle East & Africa
THE CRYSTAL CRUISES BRAND IS WELL KNOWN TO THE TRADE AND WE ARE ALL DELIGHTED TO SEE IT BACK – WHAT CHANGES AND UPGRADES ARE YOU MAKING BEFORE THE SHIPS ENTER SERVICE?
There is a huge refurbishment process going on with both Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony. Much of the accommodation is being dramatically upgraded and the suites, although they were already amazing, will be even better. They will be enlarged – in some cases, tripling in size.
Passengers will therefore notice that with reduced passenger capacity, the ships are even more spacious which in turn will also allow for even better service. They are going to look beautiful!
TELL US ABOUT THE SHIPS’ DEPLOYMENTS.
From 31st July 2023, Crystal Serenity will leave Naples, cruise through the Med, up through Europe to the Americas and down the Eastern Seaboard.
She will be visiting the UK & Ireland in August and in late summer in- corporate some amazing voyages including Iceland.
Crystal Serenity will then head west to North America to start a World Cruise from January 2024 round trip to Miami.
Crystal Symphony starts sailing in September with a series of Eastern Med/Adriatic cruises before heading east for the winter through Asia and Australia with outstanding cruise options and incredible itineraries in the Pacific.
WHAT CAN GUESTS EXPECT ON BOARD?
The ‘new’ Crystal Cruises will have a huge amount of respect for what went before.
We are conscious of the extremely high levels of service and on board experience they were renowned for - and that remains in our DNA.
Many of the department heads are coming back, three quarters of the captains, most hotel managers and over 40% of all staff which says a lot for the way Crystal Cruises was thought of.
With this and the refurbishments, we are hugely excited about the new product offering and are sure guests will be too.
Of course this has all been made available with the backing and security of Abercrombie & Kent which is so important.
We will be using a hybrid of their reservation systems and are delighted and grateful to them for all they provide. Having said that, Crystal Cruises is very much its own brand and we are dedicated and focussed to it.
HOW IMPORTANT IS THE TRADE TO YOU?
My role is to remodel the way Crystal Cruises goes to market in the UK and Europe – that means taking ownership of our trade distribution.
We want to engage with travel partners who want to work with us and directly own the relationships we have with the trade which is a major difference from before.
There are so many great travel partners out there and I aim to have a UK based sales team up and running by the end of the year dedicated to trade sales. We are on sale now for our first sailing on 31st July and we want to talk to you!

SALESMATTERS WITH... AZAMARA CRUISES
Which of your cruises are currently selling well with agents and why do you think this is?
Greece always sells well and Croatia has also been very popular recently. This is down to the unrivalled ports we visit here. I’ve done several Greece cruises myself and this year I am visiting six ports I’ve never been to before.
Can you share with us an example of a successful sales promotion with an agent.
On board Credit is always successful. Even though Azamara includes most amenities - guests can make use of this on extra shore excursions, spa treatments or treat themselves to some nights in speciality dining.
Have there been any changes or innovations with the product that you can tell us about?
When we were bought by Sycamore Partners in March 2021 – within a week they had invested in a new ship for us “Azamara Onward”, so we are now a four-ship fleet. We have the exciting new Atlas Bar on Azamara Onward too.
The biggest news over recent weeks is that we now have our very own booking system so Azamara
are now completely independent and have much more control of our own destiny with exciting plans for the future.
On the basis of ‘if you have seen it, you can sell it’ - does Azamara offer agency concessionary rates?
Yes - Azamara has some fantastic Travel Agent rates and we also sell through Interline as well. We often come out with little surprises here and there and will do spot prizes and incentives to sail with us as
a guest.
Will agents have a chance to see and visit your ships this year at all?
Yes, we are currently working on a ship visit plan. We are also working on a Seminars at Sea – so it’s a case of watch this space!
What would you recommend agents focus on with Azamara to see increased sales?
I would say focus on what differentiates Azamara from other cruise lines. The amount of time we spend in port and our unrivalled port destinations are definite game changers. We spend 80% of our time in port and only 20% at sea.
Sailing slowly through the night, arriving in port early in the morning and not leaving again until 9/10/11pm or even staying overnight in port for 1 or 2 nights. This really gives our guests the opportunity to experience the ambience in the places they
are visiting.
There’s no rushing back to an Azamara ship that’s for sure. When you sail with us - it’s time to “slow down”.

“Every cruise will feature our new Signature Experiences
