Ryanair to
launch new
routes from
Edinburgh
Ryanair has announced 11 new routes from Edinburgh this winter, along with the closure of its base at Glasgow Airport from November.
Edinburgh will operate 45 Ryanair routes including London Stansted and 11 new routes
to Berlin, Derry, Gothenburg, Hamburg, Lisbon, Memmingen, Stockholm Skavsta, Riga, Seville, So a and Tallinn.
Eight routes will depart from Glasgow Prestwick including Alicante, Faro, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Malaga, Malta, Rzeszow and Tenerife South.
Ryanair is moving one aircra from Glasgow Airport to Edinburgh and cutting its routes to just three - Dublin, Wroclaw and Krakow. The airline blames these cuts on the cost of Air Passenger Duty.
A spokesman for Glasgow Airport said: “We are bitterly disappointed at this decision
by Ryanair which is not only damaging for Glasgow and wider Scottish connectivity, but will impact jobs locally.
“This is a result of the airline’s review of its single aircra bases, however, we have been le in no doubt it is also a consequence
of the Scottish Government’s inability to introduce its proposed 50% cut in Air Departure
Tax (ADT).
“Despite clear and repeated warnings from both airports and airlines about the potential impact of this policy not being implemented, we are now faced with the loss of 20 services and a signi cant number of jobs.”
