A STAY AT THE NEWCASTLE MARRIOTT HOTEL GOSFORTH PARK
Aye, the nights are fair drawing in...
as the clocks turn back and the crisp leaves fall o the trees, who doesn’t love the excuse for a cosy night in, with a mug of hot chocolate (or a wee dram)!
Summer may be over but there are lots of things we can secretly indulge in as we head into Autumn! We can all be kids again as we celebrate the ghouls and ghosts of Halloween with a party, dooking for apples, eating monkey nuts and giving us a good excuse to wear fancy dress; we can ohh and ahh at the amazing colours and sounds of sparklers and reworks on Bon re Night.
With the nights drawing in, we can snuggle up on the sofa and settle down to watch X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing. Then when it gets colder, we can all enjoy wearing our big woolly jumpers, u y scarves and furry hats and go for long walks in the country, followed by a lovely stodgy Sunday lunch!
However, even though we all may love the joys of Autumn, we like it even better when the dreich grey skies and pouring rain drives customers through the doors to book an escape to warmer climes and sunnier skies!

New inventions in the world of travel
By PaUL CROnje,
Clyde Travel Management
Supply doesn’t always follow demand - we all have gadgets that we thought we would never need! Over time, things in the travel industry have also fallen into this category, their acronym-rich names a sign of modernising times: a PTa, a TOd, an emd. in hindsight, we can acknowledge these all served a purpose – an invention born from a desire to meet the demands of the travelling public - whether they are aware of its application in “making life easy” or not.
As our industry has improved upon our gadgets, we generate a snowball of demand. Who today could lead a travel business and compete without generating e-tickets? Or without an app that calculates additional fare collections? We now need all of these.
Yet where demand (or a need then)
is amiss, the inventor thereof is
king. Following British Airways’ announcement that from 1st November its GDS content distribution costs and model will change signi cantly, travel management companies are asking: does anyone really need this? Are we even needed?
The industry is waiting in anticipation to see what New Distribution Capability (NDC) actually is! It amazes me that
so many can predict the cataclysmic consequences – even the outright end of the travel agent – of this concept
with so little understanding of it. It
will be argued by some that NDC is a battle between airlines, IATA and the GDS - certainly not one for the “free distribution channel” that is the agent.
Others will argue that this created need is not all about reducing cost but rather about increasing choice. But for whom? If you can navigate your way through the PR hoping to discover the true reason for this imminent shi in how we buy and sell travel, then you may also question our industry’s future longevity.
Yet, just like the average traveller has no clue what an EMD is, let alone care about how we go about exchanging
a ticket, the people who stand to win most from NDC (we are told) have no idea what it is or whether they actually need it. They, the consumer, will still continue to search, select and purchase. The prophets of doom must be wringing their hands while the travel community tries to come to terms
with this.
Since all of this is happening within two decades of the withdrawal of commission, it is hard not to feel a sense of resentment towards airlines in general – not so much because of the change itself, but because once again, of the limited time travel agents have been given to organise themselves.
Of course, airlines – or suppliers of any product or service – have the right to do what is best for their business.
But I am hopeful that the dawn of NDC will lead to yet new inventions in our world of travel - smarter and more agile travel management companies - a return to that most precious unique selling point of yesterday which in years will cost a premium again: customer service.
The trick is to keep calm and carry on. But not as before...

The art of listening is highly underrated...
i know that many of you might think that the SPaa is all about
the fantastic events that we host throughout the year, like the Summer Ball or the annual Travel awards, but actually it’s just part of what we do.
There is a whole host of activity going on in the background with regards to work carried out by SPAA Council on behalf of our Members. For example, things like submissions on ATOL consultations (I’ll come back to that in a minute), liaising with the Scottish government re the proposed APD reduction, meetings with Associates and Members on NDC related issues (eg BA and GDS’s like Travelport).
It all probably sounds very serious and to be honest, it is sometimes quite heavy and can be fairly intense. But that is the nature of the beast – we are not called the ‘Voice of Travel’ in Scotland without good reason!
There have been a few big issues and collapses in the trade recently, like the Ryanair cancellation debacle and the Monarch Airlines failure.
Monarch didn’t have a huge e ect on our Members, because it mostly ew from
the South, but it did highlight one of the issues that we have raised time and time again in our consultations with the CAA and government: the total lack of nancial protection on ‘seat only’ sales made
direct to the public by airlines (something that was highlighted by the collapse of Globespan in Scotland many years ago).
This kind of sale is generally not covered by the ATOL system and the consumer is usually ignorant of this fact when making the purchase. Why is it, you may ask, if an agent wants to sell a ‘seat only’, they are required to provide ‘ ight only’ ATOL coverage - but the same seat sold directly by the airline does not?
Of the 110,000 Monarch passengers who were repatriated from abroad when the airline collapsed, it appears that only 20,000 were actually covered by the ATOL system. So, it would seem that it was actually a government decision to instruct the CAA to bring back the other 90,000 passengers - at the taxpayers expense.
Bringing back the stranded travellers was the right thing to do. We are not arguing about that. Why they were not already covered by the ATOL system or another form of nancial protection is the
real question.
As I mentioned, for many years during the numerous ATOL consultations held by the CAA, the SPAA have advocated the need for the ATOL protection system to be extended to cover ‘seat only’ sales made by airlines direct to the public. As long as 12 years ago, we proposed a £1 levy on all scheduled airfares to provide nancial protection for seat only sales. Successive governments failed to heed the advice or warnings, citing that a major change in legislation was required to do so.
Anyway, fast forward to the present day and here we have an airline gone bust
and the government choosing to meet
the costs of repatriation of ‘seat only’ customers at taxpayers’ expense. Probably because they quite rightly feared the consumer backlash if it became apparent that there was no consumer protection
in place.
We all know that hindsight is a great thing, but it gives us no real satisfaction to say ‘we told you so’. SPAA might be the Voice of Travel, but when it comes down to it, sometimes the message can fall on
deaf ears!
If anything good comes out of the Monarch Airlines debacle, let’s hope it’s that those with the power to change things, begin to listen.

The best thing about my job and what keeps me motivated, is that no one day is the same. Each day is so varied - whether it’s meeting travel agents, tour operators or members of the public; visiting di erent locations throughout Scotland and the North of England; or hosting ship visits and escorting FAM trips.
As a sales manager, it’s important that you like meeting people and you enjoy driving. Luckily for me, I really enjoy meeting people and I absolutely love cars! I always carefully prepare for the week ahead and you will o en nd me in my garage
in the evening, putting presentation packs together for the following day’s training sessions and meetings.
When you’re “on the road” you also have to be prepared
for every eventuality. My favourite story involves Police Scotland who once mistook me for a Liverpool drugs baron! They scrambled the force helicopter to tail me while they assembled four vehicles from the armed response unit
who then stopped and surrounded my vehicle! Luckily, it didn’t take them long to realise their mistake and it all ended amicably. However, I’m always very careful now on my visits north of the border and very polite to our friends from Police Scotland.
The most important aspect of my current role is getting
out and about with our travel partners and improving the understanding that agents have about the Crystal cruise product. Even though Crystal has been operating successfully for 27 years, the company has been relatively low pro le in the UK and especially in the North of England and Scotland. Under the new ownership of Genting Hong Kong, and with the expansion from ocean cruising into European river cruising and also luxury expedition yachts, it o ers a stunning and diverse product range and is one of the best kept secrets in the cruise world!
Many agents prefer an early morning product training session before the phones start ringing. Starting a training session at 8.30am can be really useful and I nd it helps to reward agents with goodies from a certain restaurant with Golden Arches and lots of co ee! I always try to keep the training fun and cover the basics, including an overview and a product update and where possible, show some videos. As long as the sta learn at least ve new key things about the product, then I am happy. Crystal also has a great online training programme in partnership with OTT.
On sales calls, I always like to take agents chocolate biscuits or Kit Kats. It’s my way
of saying thank you.
I also like to record the visit with a sel e, which I send back to Elaine in the o ce who posts it on our Facebook page. Since we started posting the sel es, we’ve had a great response from agents and a lot
of likes.
We have been very fortunate this year that Crystal Symphony has visited a number of Scottish and Northern England
ports as part of its Northern Europe and British Isles voyages so we’ve been able to showcase the ship during a series of organised ship visits. I absolutely love hosting ship visits, which include tours of the ship, followed by lunch onboard. We are also happy for agents to bring along some of their clients as it’s a great opportunity for them to get a feel for the Crystal product. Next summer Crystal Serenity will be visiting Greenock and South Queensferry, so if you have any ideas for a ship visit, just let me know!
A typical day could nish with me attending one of the many SPAA functions, providing a great opportunity to meet old friends as well as new agents. Alternatively, a day could nish with me hosting a client presentation event in conjunction with one of our travel partners.
Throughout the day, it’s important to chat to the London
o ce and to keep on top of emails. One of my new rules when driving is to keep my phone in a shoebox in the boot of the car. If I didn’t do this, it would too tempting to have a sneaky look at an email or to take a call!
I’m glad to say, that a er all these years ‘on the road’, I still love it and long may it continue! Right, I’m o now to buy some
Kit Kats!
If you need anything, please feel free to give me a call on 07841 921533 and I’ll be more than happy to help. I look forward to seeing you all soon.

discover the culture and traditions of japan
Visitor numbers from the UK to japan are increasing steadily year on year and as japan will be hosting both the Rugby world Cup in 2019 and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, the run-up to these events will increase the country’s pro le still further.
Of course Japan’s history and unique culture are the main attractions. But it’s also a place for honeymooners, skiers and snowboarders, scuba divers, walkers, and for followers of anime, manga graphic novels and contemporary culture.
As Japan is “just across the water” from Siberia, the north
and mountainous areas of the country have reliable, deep
powder snow from December to March, great for skiing and snowboarding. But a winter sports trip to Japan is really two trips in one: an opportunity to practise the sport and also to explore this unique country and its culture.
Japan is also a starting or nishing point for several major cruise ships in 2018: Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC and Princess Cruises will all sail out of Yokohama on trips around Japan or on to China and Taiwan. This is a great opportunity for
travellers to y out to Japan earlier, or return later, and spend some pre- or post-cruise time discovering the country in more depth.
As well as decent 3* and 4* western-style hotels, Japan has a multitude of deluxe properties of the major worldwide hotel chains, as well as very special “ryokans”, where guests can experience Japanese tradition as well as very high levels of service.
For travellers on a budget, the Japan Rail Pass remains an ever- popular product: valid on the entire Japan Rail network including Bullet trains, the Rail Pass is great value for money.

Infrastructure repairs were carried out as quickly as possible in order to resume the tourism-driven economy that employs about 50 per cent of the Keys workforce. “By welcoming visitors to the destination, it provides the jobs and the hope that our residents

Wild horses and pink amingos
for customers heading to the south of france on a river cruise, the Camargue is a totally unique experience not to be missed.
The Camargue Natural Park area, which includes a UNESCO designated biosphere reserve, can be visited at any time of the year, but for bird watchers, it is particularly spectacular in the spring and autumn, when the park’s wetlands are a magnet for thousands of migrating birds.
However, one of the main attractions of the area are the thousands of pink amingos. These can be admired in many of the park’s shallow expanses of water, but most easily in the Camargue ornithological park, a bird park just north of the seaside resort of Saintes Marie de la Mer. The centre has numerous walking trails and is home to many varieties of waterfowl, including amingos, egrets and herons along with a bird hospital.
While the amingos are the Camargue’s most emblematic birds, the area is more historically famous for its white horses. The Camargue’s horses are a special breed, reputedly one of the oldest breeds of horses in the world and they have lived in the saline wetlands for thousands of years. While some live in semi-wild conditions, most are now used either by the Camargue’s traditional cowboys, for herding and rounding up the area’s distinctive black bulls, or else for pony trekking. These stables cater largely for tourists and you can easily go out on a trek across the elds or the salt marshes.
The Camargue also o ers great hiking and cycling trails with miles of sandy beaches, only accessible along tracks or on foot, on horseback or bike.

Relax with some aromatherapy
if you are looking for a more relaxing tour while on a river cruise, why not choose the fragrant lavender elds...
Travel is my Therapy
In bloom from June to August in the Luberon, around the Mont- Ventoux, in the region of Sault and Valréas in France, the amazing scenery and atmosphere make the lavender elds one of the summer must-sees in Provence.
Over the centuries, lavender has been used to make soap and cosmetics; it is also part of the Provençal cuisine and lavender honey and lavender sorbets are also worth a taste! Lavender is said to heal insect bites and burns as well as repel insects. It can help soothe headaches and it is said to help you sleep.
You can visit lavender farms and distilleries, attend lavender festivals or visit the Lavender museum in Coustellet.

View from the Bridge...
are our sales e orts good enough to get extra clients on board to ll all the new ships ?
The Scottish Passenger Agents Association recently commissioned a survey on barriers and drivers for people to travel. One statistic really caught my eye - it said that 58% of respondents felt that nothing would encourage them to go on a cruise!
If this gure is accurate and re ective, then clearly there is a huge amount of work that still needs to be done by cruise lines, travel agents, tour operators, CLIA, and PR companies etc to get these vital ‘new to cruise clients’ on board a ship.
As I have said in a previous edition, the cruise lines have done a great job getting rid of many of the reasons why people would not go on a cruise, including investing billions in superb new ships, innovative on board facilities and products, family and single friendly pricing etc.
However, there is no magic formula to attract these people. We need to come up with new ways to showcase the bene ts of cruising. Perhaps we could highlight the incredible value for money that a cruise o ers. We could also try to to nd innovative ways to sell ex UK cruising, with so many more local port departures.
I once attended a seminar hosted by the great Bob Dickinson of Carnival Cruise Line who was the man credited with hugely increasing Carnival’s sales and even cruise sales in general.
He put forward the idea that ‘Ports sell Cruises’, so perhaps we need to put more focus on the ports of call and the tours and experiences on o er?
The fact is that there is actually a fantastic opportunity here - the agents who can best showcase cruising and break down the barriers have the best chance to tap into that 58% of people who say that they would never cruise - that’s a big number!
Ship
of the Month...
The mSC Preziosa - Beautiful modern ship with a real WOW factor
mSC Cruises are one of the biggest big sales opportunities in the market for travel agents today and most certainly in the future - a recent visit on board the mSC Preziosa con rmed this.
This oating ve-star resort o ers incredible facilities including
an aqua park, sports centre and outdoor and indoor pools. The designers have managed to incorporate everything that you could possibly want for an amazing holiday experience but have also ensured that the magical Italian/ Mediterranean elegance, air and great style still remains, no matter where you are on board.
The ship feels classy and sophisticated and to match this, you will nd the sta warm and friendly. Accommodating some 3,502 passengers, there is no doubt that the ship is large, however, it never felt crowded and there were lots of places where you could sit and relax and let the world slip by.
The onboard product may be di erent from that of many of their major competitors, but MSC Cruises is perfectly suited to families,
couples, singles - any of your clients who are looking for quality, but at a value for money price.
MSC have heavily invested in their local sales team and with many new ‘state of the art’ innovative ships coming soon, with some great itineraries, I would suggest giving the award winning Colin Rillie a call on 07917 632399 - and have a chat about how you too can get on board with MSC Cruises!

The Canny Lad...
daRRen PhiLLiPS
Hi everyone, hope we are all keeping busy and gearing up for the end of year?
This month I wanted to write about
my recent cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas. It was my rst time with RCCL and I was eager to compare it with MSC, Norwegian, Disney, Celebrity and Fred Olsen, all of which I have sailed on.
Once onboard, I was pleasantly surprised! My cabin was spacious with a good sized bathroom, a huge oval shaped bed, sofa, loads of storage space, (I love the way they make use of behind the mirrors for storage too!) and a good sized balcony with two comfy oversized chairs and a table.
As we explored the ship, starting with the Sky Bar (obviously!) on Deck 13 and working our way down the bars to the British pub, the Bull and Bear on Deck 5, I couldn’t nd fault with anything!
2 FOR 1
We could always get a sun lounger, even on days at sea and the sta were always on hand to serve you a drink.....well it’s rude
to say no when they have walked over to you! The Windjammer bu et restaurant is excellent, with a huge choice of everything you could want for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I had to try and control myself - I was t to burst with the amount of food
on o er! There is also a great choice of restaurants for dinner, with some of the best meals I have ever eaten......and it was all portion controlled!
With so much to do, it’s di cult to see everything and even though there were over 3,000 passengers onboard, the ship never felt crowded. We sailed from Barcelona to Marseille, Villefranche, La Spezia, Rome (can’t spell the port name!) then nally Naples where we went to Sorrento for a few hours. I was amazed at how many people said they were not
getting o the ship at any port as they had done it before and just wanted to enjoy
the ship!
I was very impressed and would have no hesitation in recommending RCCL - I only wish I had the space to tell you more!
Thanks for reading.

Gregorz... The well travelled bear takes a trip on the
Venice simplon- orient-express
– it doesn’t get much better than this!
TOP TiPS
Oh, what a lucky bear! i got to experience rst-hand what is quite simply the most famous train in the world on a trip from Venice to London on board the Venice Simplon-Orient-express!
Boarding in Venice Santa Lucia train station via the red carpet, welcomed by liveried sta , you are immediately aware that this trip
will be something quite special! The Orient- Express has always been much more than just a train journey. Ever since the rst trip from Paris to Istanbul in 1883, the glamour and romance of the onboard experience lives on.
The accommodation carriages, lovingly restored to their heyday of the 1920 and 30’s are beautiful and the dining cars breathtaking, with crisp white linen, silverware and crystal. You are transported back to the Golden
Age of Travel. Over the years, the train has attracted Hollywood stars, royalty and multi- millionaires. This trip gives you the chance to
feel like one of them – even if only for a couple of days.
Once your journey starts you can settle in to your private compartment or relax in one of the public areas and simply watch Europe’s nest scenery glide by including The Alps, Brenner Pass and Paris. The stewards attend to your every need and serve you breakfast and a ernoon tea at your leisure. No request is too much trouble. In the evening, the train comes to life in the Bar Car where the pianist plays on a baby grand while you sip a cocktail! There are three restaurant cars to choose from, each o ering the nest cuisine prepared on board and a wine list that will impress even the most particular of connoisseurs.
A er dinner, when you return to your compartment, you will nd it transformed into a cosy bedroom and you awake in the morning to new scenery and fresh croissants. I arrived in London later that day more than a little sad that my journey had come to an end.
3 ThetrainleavesVenicemid- morning with one overnight on board. You disembark in Calais and executive coaches await to take you through the Channel Tunnel and on to the classic British Pullman train for the remaining journey to London Victoria. The trip can also be done in reverse, starting in London.
3 Dress code. There is only one rule
- you can’t be too overdressed! Dress to impress for the evening on board. Daytime is smart but casual.
3 There are no showers or power points in cabins and limited space so that means no hairdryers, straighteners or phone chargers, ladies and gentlemen!
3 Did you know... when American singer Jerry Lewis took a trip on board, he booked an entire carriage for himself and his 36 pieces of Louis Vuitton luggage!
3 A famous lm producer and his daughter travelled on the train. They booked 8 cabins on board – 2 for them and the remaining 6 for the daughter’s favourite teddy bears. The steward was asked to make up the beds, tuck them in and read a bedtime story to each bear with the daughter. Why didn’t this happen on my trip I ask!!
Look out for the new adaptation of ‘murder on the Orient express’ in cinemas on 10th november. with a stellar cast including Kenneth Branagh, johnny depp and judi dench, it is sure to reignite massive interest in the Orient express. now is the time to start thinking about getting your clients on board for this once in a lifetime trip!
Where will he go next?...

Questions & Answers
GaRy ReaVeLy speaks to haRRieT BOyLe, Glenton Holidays
How did you start o in the
travel industry?
I started in the travel business when I was 16 working for a coach operator and my rst day in the industry was spent stamping travel brochures. I did everything from taking reservations, handling petty cash, escorting tours and even cleaning. I worked there until I graduated and then went to work in the West End in London for
a company servicing incoming groups and tours. I then moved to North Sea Ferries and saw them through the introduction of some of their new ships, covering an area from Kent to Scotland.
Finally, I moved to Glasgow in 2003 and started Glenton in 2006. It seemed like a great idea over a few glasses of wine - the only down side was despite having lots of ideas and enthusiasm, we had no money! We found a third party with Paul who came on board and helped with nancial support and connections and thus, Glenton was born!
Glenton has expanded its product -
what is the key to your success?
We carry over 40,000 passengers a year now, with 18 branded coaches in Scotland and three in England. We are very proud that over the years we have won numerous awards but we are an ever evolving business and never stand still on our achievements.
For instance, we introduced our solo brand ‘Good Companions’ – escorted holidays for the more senior market – and this continues to go from strength to strength. Clients can enjoy anything from an a ernoon trip to the Falkirk Wheel to a 12-night cruise to the Baltic.
What message do you have for the
travel trade?
Our relationship with the trade is key and we see agents as part of our long term strategy – in fact, we want to work with more agents and this is one of the reasons we became members of the SPAA. For the last couple of years we have been working with the travel trade to host Days Away to get their customers on board. These have been extremely successful in increasing awareness and mutual business. We are always happy to host an away day, in conjunction with agents, for their current coaching clients, or any potential new ones (perhaps a lunch at Cromlix House) and give them the Glenton experience.
We also tailor make products to suit
agents’ needs. For instance, if a travel agent in
Perth has enough clients who want to go to the Grand
National, we will create a bespoke tour for them to sell. This also works for tours such as Twin Town trips. Anything that might be of particular interest to their clients, we will happily work together with agents to make it happen.
We have a loyal following and retention is high which is good
for agents – repeat business is good business. We care about the feedback we get and try to action everything we can to keep our customers. Customer questionnaires are read by all managers in the business as we want our passengers to have a great experience and come back again and again to Glenton.
What are your future plans for
the company?
We introduced’ Door to Door’ last year and will continue to expand this as it’s been a great success. We also want to reinvent some
of the traditional resorts like Blackpool. There has been a lot of investment in these areas and we want to link into this.
Our loyalty programme is also quite new and has proved popular and again we want to grow this. Membership gives you travel insurance, money o day trips, rst look deals etc for an annual fee of only £20. Repeat business is a signi cant factor in our success and our travel agent partners.
Finally...
tell us about the Glenton dog?
Glenton is our Scottie dog - we wanted the business to be fun and noticeable and he is extremely popular! We post pictures of him on his travels and people love that. He’s not long back from Monte Carlo – so, well travelled indeed!

Members of the travel trade recently made their way to George Best Belfast City Airport for an aircra familiarisation trip with Icelandair. Icelandair’s year-round three times weekly service between Belfast City Airport (BHD) to Reykjavik (KEF) is operated by Icelandair’s sister airline, Air Iceland Connect.
2017 has been a special year for the award- winning Canadian airline air Transat! This year saw the airline celebrating 30 years of ying, with 29 of those between Canada and the UK.
Over the years, Air Transat has whisked British and Irish passengers o to explore the stunning landscapes and cities of Canada and to reunite families. Each year the airline carries over 4.5 million passengers and growth looks sure for the future.
This winter alone there is increased capacity between the UK and Canada to make it even easier to spend the festive period with family or to enjoy a fantastic winter city break in Toronto.
With departures all year round from Glasgow, Manchester and London Gatwick to Toronto, the east coast of Canada is always easily within reach. New for winter 2017, both Glasgow and Manchester Airports will see twice weekly departures to Toronto, making either a short 3-night city break or a long 6-night city break easily achievable.
Of course, it’s not just the winters that are spectacular in Canada but the country mesmerises travellers all year round. During the peak summer months Air Transat operates multiple direct and connecting ights every day from Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and London Gatwick to Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary; making all the hotspots in Canada even easier to reach.
For passengers, the lure of the Rocky Mountains, the beautiful coastal cities of the Paci c North West and the iconic sights of the east keeps Canada at the top of people’s wish lists - and it’s looking no di erent for 2018!
