No winter lasts forever
Well, it definitely feels like spring is in the air. Forward bookings are strong, operators are releasing their 2024/2025 programmes and there are lots of agent events in the calendar. We can all feel a spring in our step this month!
And with customers looking for new adventures and a deeper insight into destinations, an Escorted Tour is an ideal choice. There are plenty of itineraries to choose from - all highlighted in this month’s issue - with a tour to suit everyone.
We should all congratulate ourselves for getting this far on the road to recovery - and as SPAA President Mike Tibbert said in his great speech at the recent SPAA Dinner - “we should hold our heads high”.

AMBASSADOR CRUISE LINE ANNOUNCES ORCA PARTNERSHIP
Ambassador Cruise Line has renewed its partnership with ORCA, the charity dedicated to marine conservation and announced that the 120-day
World Cruise will be included in 14 itineraries dedicated to ocean conservation and guest interaction – the longest time the charity has ever committed to any cruise line for a single sailing.
Following Ambassador’s successful inaugural season working in collaboration with ORCA, Ocean Conservationists will be joining guests onboard Ambience for seven itineraries sailing from Ambassador’s home port of London Tilbury, while her sister ship, Ambition – entering service in May
- with additional departures from Newcastle, Dundee, Liverpool, Belfast, Bristol and Falmouth – set to host a further seven.
The sailings will see ORCA’s experts collect scientific data aimed
at protecting sea life including whales, dolphins and porpoises
as well as giving guests the opportunity to learn more about ocean conservation while onboard.
Ambience’s Grand Round the World Cruise will see the charity visit parts of the globe for the very first time and ports of call will include Blue Whale migratory routes around Australia and the East Indian Ocean; threatened Pygmy Blue Whale habitats in Sri Lanka; the nursery grounds of Southern Right Whales in South Africa; migratory routes for the endangered Oceania subpopulation of Humpback Whales near the Cook Islands; and the Panama Canal, one of the busiest shipping routes in the world where animals are at high risk of
ship strike.

Hello and welcome everyone to my latest update on our SPAA.
If you were one of the lucky ones who were able to attend, then I’m sure you will all agree that this year’s Dinner was another massive success. If
you were not, then I’m sure that any feedback you received from those who did attend would have confirmed that it was a very constructive and entertaining event.
The Crowne Plaza Hotel, led of course, by Jason and his team, did us all proud again with an excellent meal and service on the night. Well done to them and thanks again for making it run
so smoothly.
The highlight of the evening for me
of course was the speeches - it was truly fascinating from both speakers Willie Walsh – Director General IATA and Ruth Davidson, Baroness Davidson of Lundin Links.
Willie spoke to two main themes in
his Reply - that of the long series of serious shocks challenging commercial aviation since 9/11/2001, including
the financial turmoil of 2008 - and the industry’s extraordinary resilience and determination in building back.
He addressed directly, the misguided Government commitment to APD
- an ‘unnecessary tax’ on a vital business sector; and to enthusiastic applause, he referred to his respect for Scotland’s Loganair - the ‘best- managed airline through and beyond the Covid crisis’ and called for Government to earmark the ‘slots’ relinquished by collapsed Flybe for Loganair, to continue its development of regional connectivity.
Ruth’s tales of her previous existence in the Territorial Army were highly entertaining. Her introduction and self- description as “a recovering politician” certainly made me laugh as it is such
a clever phrase and for those of us who take an interest in politics, it light heartedly encapsulated her previous incarnation at Holyrood.
THE VOICE OF TRAVEL IN SCOTLAND
The SPAA bandwagon rolls on ahead into Aberdeen the second week of March for the Members dinner at
the Atholl Hotel which I always look forward to as it gives me the chance to connect with local agents that might not get the opportunity to meet in the central belt and remains important
to me that we connect with the grassroots all around Scotland.
I shall leave you this month with some thoughts from my speech at the Dinner which for me emphasises how proud
I am to be part of the travel industry here in Scotland.
“My own personal thoughts are that the travel agency community should hold our heads high; not only did we negotiate commercially through an almost impossible trading scenario, but we stood firm by supporting our clients, providing vital information and always ensuring their welfare was
our priority.
“We are now not only still standing but we are thriving. I salute each and every one in the industry who stood tall and came through stronger and wiser.”
Take care and stay safe

BELFAST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT GAINS ENVIRONMENTAL CERTIFICATION
Belfast International Airport, part of the VINCI Airports network, has received the ISO 14001 certification, the first time in Northern Ireland that an airport has been recognised with this international standard for its Environmental Management System (EMS).
The certification, granted by the NQA, represents an important step towards environmental management. The achievement of ISO 14001 is one more of the key VINCI Airports’ environmental goals that Belfast International Airport has achieved before the deadline established by the network (2030).
The airport has been working on several sustainability initiatives that has led to the achievement of the ISO
14001 accreditation including; the roll out of LED lighting throughout the terminal, the use of solar power to power all aspects of the airport and a commitment to reducing waste and water usage. Further initiatives are planned throughout 2023 including LED lighting across the airfield and the introduction of fully electric passenger buses.
Belfast International Airport is the 25th airport in the VINCI Airports network to obtain this certification.
Kevin Napier, Compliance Manager, celebrated achieving the certification. “Receiving this certification is testament to the commitment that Belfast International Airport
and VINCI Airports have to halve our scope 1 and scope 2 carbon emissions by 2030. It is a significant step along that journey and comes on the back of recent funding from the UK government for our sustainability initiatives.”

Hello everyone and welcome to spring!
I hope by now you have seen our brand new programme of cruising for 2024/25, unveiled on our website earlier this month.
It features sailings from Rosyth from June to August, with each cruise hand-crafted to show the best of the destinations at the best time of year. A great example is Balmoral’s ‘Portugal’s Islands in Search of the Meteor Shower’ cruise, sailing from Rosyth in August 2024, purposefully timed to give guests the best chance of witnessing the Perseids meteor shower while in the Azores.
These new cruises are available exclusively to our Ocean members until 17th March when they will be available to all – with a choice of on-board spend or door-to-door transfers, plus dedicated solo offers too. It follows an exciting start to the month, as we released two incredible adventures early.
Our 106-night ‘Voyage of Exploration Around the World’ cruise aboard Bolette, inspired by journeys of historic explorers, includes an option to join from Liverpool. It features off- the-beaten track destinations such as Bora Bora and Easter Island, plus chances to seek out wildlife including Magellanic penguins and the ‘Big Five’.
Our 82-night ‘Discovering Asia with the Holi Festival’ Grand Voyage aboard Balmoral visits Myanmar and Cambodia and has been specially timed to allow our guests to experience the Hindu Holi Festival - a spectacle of colour and celebration.
Guests who book either of these sailings can enjoy free door to door transfers of up to 250 UK mainland miles AND up to £600 per person on board spend for the World Cruise, or up to £500 per person on board spend for Balmoral’s Grand Voyage.
We are super excited about our new programme and know you and your customers will be too!
Take care everyone and happy selling!

AIR ASTANA – PROBABLY THE BEST AIRLINE YOU HAVE NEVER BOOKED
This year Air Astana will be celebrating 20 years of operations between London Heathrow and Kazakhstan. So why is it that so many in the UK Travel Trade are blissfully unaware of this gem of an airline based out of Almaty, Kazakhstan?
Aside from oil and gas workers, (and an increasing number of investment bankers, engineers and teachers), why has the British traveller routinely skipped past Kazakhstan and Central Asia and how is this now changing? Air Astana is a joint venture between Samruk Kasyna, the sovereign wealth fund of Kazakhstan (51%) and
BAE Systems (49%) from the UK.
From the very outset, the airline was founded on the highest principles
of safety, reliability, excellence and integrity. As their mission statement suggests: “From the Heart of Eurasia we are building one of the finest airlines in the world”. So how do they shape up?
The airline is recognised by Skytrax, (for the tenth consecutive year), as the Best Airline in Central Asia; notably including an extension to include
the whole of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in 2022.
The airline operates a modern
western fleet of Boeing 767-300ER, Embraer-190 E2 and Airbus A320 family aircraft; including the brand new A321NEO Long Range which flies on the route between London Heathrow and Almaty.
Kandy Lake, Almaty Region
The average age of the fleet is
4.6 years, which makes it one of
the youngest fleets in the world. Considered one of the leading narrow-bodied products in the sky, the A321NEO-LR boasts 16 lie-flat Business Class seats, individual in- flight entertainment and soothing mood lighting throughout the aircraft. There is an innovative mid-class product, ‘Economy Sleeper’ which affords the combination of three adjacent economy-class seats, a comfortable mattress and a duvet set in a separate forward cabin.
British travellers can experience
Air Astana not just whilst traveling to Kazakhstan, but across the extended network to hot destinations such as Delhi, Beijing, Bangkok, Phuket, Seoul, Tashkent and Bishkek.
To encourage British travellers,
Air Astana has implemented a Stopover Programme in Almaty where for GBP17pp (airport transfers, 3-4* hotel and breakfast included) travellers can break their journey and take a brief glimpse of this fascinating country.
Visa-free entrance for British nationals now makes this frictionless. Visitors
to Almaty will be enchanted by this surprisingly chic, sophisticated and digitally enabled crossroads.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine may well be closer to Europe than Kazakhstan, but the impacts are certainly felt in the former Soviet state. Air Astana chooses not to operate in Russia, which was previously one of its largest markets. The airline doesn’t use Russian airspace either.
Whilst the detour to avoid Russian airspace has increased the total
trip time, an enroute stop in Aktau, Western Kazakhstan has opened up the incredible region of Mangystau to adventurers from the UK.
Bozira, Mangystau
So what’s next for this award-winning airline? In November 2022 the airline announced that it will be acquiring three new Boeing 787-900 to add to the fleet in Q1 2025.
Keen observers should also keep
an eye out for the airline’s low-cost subsidiary, Fly Arystan, which currently is one of the fastest-growing LCCs on the planet.

LOGANAIR ANNOUNCES
GLASGOW TO DONEGAL SERVICE
Loganair is restoring services between Donegal and Glasgow with a new summer timetable.
The twice-weekly flights, operating on Saturdays and Sundays from 1st July to 24th September, will provide the only direct air link between the UK and Donegal. The route will operate on the airline’s new and more efficient ATR42 aircraft.
Luke Lovegrove, Chief Commercial Officer, Loganair, said: “We are delighted to be able to restore this important connectivity between the UK and Ireland, helping families stay connected and facilitating leisure breaks too.
“We expect our summer flights to be extremely popular; therefore, we encourage customers to book as soon as possible to secure the best fares.”
The new route will also provide onward connections at Glasgow to points within Loganair’s route network across the UK.
Following the recommencement of Loganair’s Cornwall Newquay – Newcastle route, the airline has teamed up with professional rugby league club, Cornwall RLFC to become its first official airline partner.
In place for the 2023 season, the partnership also includes complimentary flights between Newquay and Manchester, boosting connectivity for the team as it competes in Betfred League One and the Betfred Challenge Cup. The flights will also be used by players travelling for training in Cornwall.
The news follows the relaunch of Loganair’s Manchester Airport to Cornwall Airport Newquay service as part of its summer schedule, operating from Friday 10th February to Saturday 28th October.
SPRING -
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL WINTER?
Where’s William?
Agents have always known Scenic for our 5-star truly all-inclusive river cruises and more recently, our incredible yacht cruises, however many aren’t aware that Scenic began with touring across Australia over 35 years ago. We offer incredible, luxury small group tours right across the globe, packed full of real bucket list experiences.
To shout about our luxury land journeys, we have recently joined ATAS and are very much looking forward to talking
to agents about what we offer, including our combinations with Scenic Eclipse ultra-luxury ocean voyages. My personal favourite is Torres del Paine & Antarctica’s Weddell Sea
- a cruise and land journey combination, which departs in November this year. The land portion of this journey to Patagonia and Torres Del Paine was always a bucket list journey for me and a few years ago, I was delighted when Scenic asked me to lead a trip there for travel agents.
We flew down from Santiago arriving late evening and it was dark by the time we reached our hotel. In the morning I opened the blinds and there was probably one of the most spectacular views I have ever seen, the majestic Southern Andes. The hotel was magnificent - we went on treks, horse riding with the gauchos who were always on the lookout for the elusive pumas.
After our time there, we then headed to the Chilean side of Patagonia for a 3-night stay in El Calafate, the gateway to The Los Glaciares National Park. I always remember seeing the pink flamingos wading in the bay next to the town.
We got to visit the impressive Perito Moreno Glacier – a
250 km square kilometre wonder of nature - our tour guide walked down to the water and brought back some glacier ice. He then proceeded to take out a bottle of malt whisky from his backpack and we enjoyed a wee dram with 600-year-old pieces of ice. A once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Then your guests would board another incredible experience – flying to Ushuaia to join Scenic Eclipse for her voyage to Antarctica. Can you imagine a better holiday? I certainly can’t!

Travel Matters speaks to
SONIA KUREK
Commercial Director,
UK, Ireland & GSA Markets
Tell us about your UK flight programme for summer ‘23, especially the Glasgow to Toronto route.
This summer we have increased our frequencies to Canada and beyond, with up to 41 direct flights a week from Glasgow, Manchester, London Gatwick and Dublin to eastern Canada.
We’re delighted to have increased services out of Glasgow for summer 2023 with up to seven direct flights a week to Toronto – three additional weekly services from summer 2022. Our connections via Toronto offer passengers the opportunity to travel onto other Canadian destinations, as well Fort Lauderdale and Orlando in the USA.
You operate the Airbus A330 and A321 on these routes - what should agents know about the onboard product and service that you offer?
Voted Best Leisure Airline in North America 2022 by Skytrax, our onboard offering is designed to meet the needs of today’s leisure and business traveller and is ever evolving. Passengers can expect a warm welcome and true Canadian hospitality across our two travel classes.
On board the A321LR, we offer more space all round, from ergonomic seats with four-way headrests in Economy to the widest Premium Economy seats to Canada, with plenty of legroom and VIP services in Club Class.
With 50% less cabin noise than previous generation aircraft and a palette of 16.7 million shades of colour in LED lighting, passengers are sure of a relaxing flight - their holiday starts the moment they step on board.
There’s plenty to keep passengers entertained thanks to our in-flight entertainment with larger individual touch screens and USB ports. Included as standard is an in- flight meal, snack and drinks in Economy, whilst Club Class passengers enjoy a selection of fine wines, gourmet meals and travel amenities.
Families are a top priority, and we aim to provide an enjoyable and stress-free travel experience. From designated check in counters to assigned side-by-side seating for families, and our free to join kids club to keep them entertained.
Tell us more about your fare options.
Our simple pricing structure makes it easy to understand and sell Air Transat. From Eco Budget to our most popular fare, Eco Standard - inclusive of standard seat selection and a bag - through to Eco Flex for those who need complete flexibility. We also have Club Standard and Club Flex fares for our premium cabin.
Our range of ancillary products allows clients to tailor their travel experience. Option Plus offers more in economy with an additional piece of luggage, priority airport services and extra onboard perks. Passengers can also pre-book their preferred seat to enjoy their flight to the fullest, be that aisle, window, more legroom or front of cabin.
Why is Toronto such a convenient airport to connect to an onward Air Transat service?
Our year-round direct flights to Toronto, and Montreal, allow passengers to experience the best of Canada throughout the seasons – there is so much to see and do at all times of year, I’m not sure which is my favourite! We offer passengers the opportunity to land in one of our gateways and leave from another city, at no extra charge. Through our codeshare partnerships and interline agreements, we strive to continually expand our offering of destinations for UK travellers – more to come on this in the coming months.
Sustainability is a hot topic for airlines - what is Air Transat doing to reduce
its carbon footprint?
Air Transat is committed to conducting its business
in a sustainable manner with the goal of reducing its environmental impact and creating a positive impact for its customers, employees and communities, both here and at its destinations. We’re dedicated to embedding sustainability into our decision-making process.
We are aligned with industry goals to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and have developed a strategy to
guide us on the path to carbon neutrality. We have modernised our fleet and improved operational efficiency, by adding Airbus A321LR’s. The most fuel-efficient aircraft in their class, the A321LR emits 15% fewer greenhouse
gas emissions and 50% less NOx than its traditional counterparts. Conscious of the importance of SAF, in 2019 we signed the first commercial SAF offtake agreement in Canada, with Montreal-based SAF+ Consortium. SAF+ aims to bring to market, by 2025-2026, a synthetic kerosene,
or e-fuel, whose carbon footprint is reduced by 80% compared to fossil kerosene.

Commenting on the new touring collection, Gary King, Head of Trade Sales at Wendy Wu said: “We’re celebrating the fact that Southeast Asia is now fully reopened, with no travel restrictions.
“Now is the time to visit Southeast Asia, as countries like Vietnam and Cambodia, having only recently reopened for tourists, are still very quiet, which means no crowds and the ability to experience these culturally rich countries in rare solitude that will naturally change in time.
“We know Asia better than anyone and we know that there
is so much choice available, so we’ve taken the decision to condense our range of touring holidays and are coming out with this, our definitive collection, offering a range of touring styles, featuring Classic and Go Beyond options, to suit all preferences and budgets.”

once again raising the bar as it becomes the first ocean cruise line to ever earn prestigious Forbes Travel Guide Star Awards.
The recognition is made more wonderful as Celebrity’s ships join an elite and exclusive group of fewer than 20 land-based properties with over 1,000 rooms in the world to ever receive the coveted recognition.
Forbes Travel Guide is the global authority on luxury hospitality and the only global rating system for luxury hotels, restaurants, spas and now,
the new ocean cruise category. Their professional inspectors travel the world to anonymously evaluate the finest hotels, restaurants, spas and ocean cruise ships based on hundreds of exacting standards that determine their annual Star Ratings.
The five inaugural resorts at sea Star-Rated ships are Celebrity Apex, Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Flora, Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Summit. The remainder of the line’s 15-ship fleet will be evaluated in the year ahead, except for the line’s smaller Galapagos ships.
“We always reach for the stars at Celebrity Cruises, whether it’s in
our exceptional level of service, our innovative ship design, or the highest quality of relaxed luxury experiences we provide onboard. To now be Star- rated multiple times over is such an incredible honour from the Forbes Travel Guide team. It’s confirmation that with our resorts at sea, our guests truly sail on the world’s best places to the world’s best places,” said Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo.
The newly Star-rated Celebrity ships represent three of the line’s class of ships, including:
• Edge Series - These ships have been hailed as architectural masterpieces, introducing a plethora of industry firsts on a cruise ship, such as an outward-facing resort deck, the world’s first cantilevered floating bar known as the The Magic Carpet®, luxurious new staterooms like the two-storey Edge Villas with private plunge pools, and more. Celebrity ApexSM (2021) and Celebrity Edge® (2018) remain among the most highly awarded ships at sea, even being named by TIME Magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places.”
• Millennium Series - Offering a more intimate cruising experience with just over 1,000 rooms each, both Celebrity Millennium® and Celebrity Summit® were part of the line’s biggest fleet-wide modernisation in 2019, with more than $500 million in luxurious upgrades made.
• Celebrity Flora® is an exclusive 100-passenger luxury mega- yacht designed specifically and purposefully for expeditions in the Galapagos and built to merge with its surroundings.
With all-natural materials, she introduced a state-of-the-art positioning system allowing the ship to remain stationary without dropping anchors to further protect the seabed and solar panels making it one of the most eco-friendly ships sailing anywhere.
One of the Celebrity Cruises’ revolutionary Edge Series Star Rated ships, Celebrity Apex, is set to sail
from Southampton for a full season from May 2024. Apex will offer an exciting line-up of itineraries that explore Northern Europe and the Mediterranean, featuring visits
to must-see places such as the Norwegian Fjords, Reykjavik, Arctic Circle, Ibiza, Lisbon and Madeira. The Forbes Travel Guide Star accolades are just another reason for travel partners to recommend Celebrity Cruises and give clients an extra level of confidence to choose Celebrity Cruises for un- rivalled service and an unforgettable holiday experience.

NEW TRAVEL INDUSTRY SUPPORT
HURTIGRUTEN APPOINTS
DIRECTOR OF EXPEDITION
OPERATIONS
Hurtigruten Expeditions have hired Alastair Newton as Director of Expedition Operations.
Over the last 20 years, the Gartmore, Scotland, based explorer has led over 150 expeditions, worked on 15 different ships and explored more than 100 countries - including multiple visits to the North Pole.
The industry expert joins following four years as director of Ponant’s National Geographic partnership. Having previously spent 15 years working as an expedition leader in Alaska, the Pacific and Antarctica, his experience perfectly places him to further develop Hurtigruten’s onboard programmes. Newton is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and holds a private pilot’s license.
“Alastair’s incredible experience from expeditions in the Arctic, Antarctica, Alaska, the Pacific and in all the exciting waters in between, sets us on track to realise our ambitions to be the world leader in sustainable expeditions on all the world’s oceans,” said Hurtigruten Expeditions’ SVP Operations, Iain McNeill.
Newton believes the key to creating unique expedition cruises lies in the interaction between the Expedition Teams and the guests. He comments: “My goal is
for Hurtigruten Expeditions to help guests deeply understand and appreciate the destinations we
visit together through placing the spotlight on our exceptional Expedition Teams.
“It is paramount for me to empower the Expedition Teams to realise their full potential and to help guests appreciate the full value of the teams.”
GROUP LAUNCHED
A new network support group has been set up to help working parents across the travel industry. 'Back
in Time for Bed' (BITFB) aims to advise parents and guardians with their childcare questions, hot topics and challenges.
The group has been set up by Vicky Billing, head of partnerships at Riviera Travel and Anna Perrott, head of supplier relations at Panache Cruises.
The hub will also provide more formal advice and resources, e.g. maternity leave and return to work rights as well as
act as an open,
'safe space' forum, with discussions to include challenging and contentious subjects.
The group will be active across social media and run events on a range of subjects, with the aim of helping parents who are balancing their career and home life.
Vicky Billing said: "I absolutely love the travel industry and
as a busy mum, I want to give back to everyone in the same position as I am. Being a parent is the ultimate mix of being rewarding and challenging and I'm confident BITFB will
help make things just a little bit easier for all of us. We want parents to know they're not alone and we're all going through the same experiences."
Anna Perrott said: "Being a mum is the hardest job I have ever done and I am constantly doing my best to navigate the work-life balance. We all struggle to juggle, for instance when pulling an all-nighter and then having a full day’s meetings.
“By being there for one another and providing the resources and communications channels to assist with everything parent-related, we'll help parents be back in time for bed."

UNITED AIRLINES MAKES IT EASIER
FOR FAMILIES TO SIT TOGETHER
United Airlines has announced an improved family seating policy that makes it easier for families to sit together, including customers who purchase Basic Economy tickets.
United’s new dynamic seat map feature will find available adjacent seats for children under 12-years old to sit next to an adult in their party for free. The online seat engine first reviews all available free Economy seats and then opens complimentary upgrades to available Preferred Seats,
if needed.
When adjacent seats are not available prior to travel, the airline’s new policy also lets customers switch for free to a flight to the same destination with adjacent seat availability in the same cabin. Customers will not be charged if there is a difference in fare price between the original and new flight.
United Polaris®, United First Class® and Economy Plus® seats remain separate products and are excluded from this family seating policy change.
