o finally meet face to face with Melanie (you can drive my car) Thom from Driveaway, the go to travel
trade car rental company. As a new member of the Travel Matters family, it was lovely to sit down and talk about all things car hire when she was in town. They offer car and motor home rental with 24,000 locations across 120 countries and she was telling me that they provide excellent agency commissions and an easy online booking system.
Sat down over coffee and cakes with the President and the Secretary
of the SPAA - Mike and Janice - to discuss the latest trade news. Always great to hear about the amazing work they do on behalf of the whole travel trade. I had discovered it was Janice’s birthday, so I made a flying visit to her favourite cake shop and surprised her with fabulous cupcakes!

The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen beckoned for the annual SPAA STAR event. In a brand new venue this
year (very posh!), there were lots
of Associates and a great turn out from the local travel trade. A good night was had by all. Had a chance
to congratulate Murray Burnett, Managing Director of Munros Travel on being appointed to the Business Travel Association’s board of directors - the BTA’s first Scottish-based board member. Well done Murray!

Had a tasty pizza and beer with Steve Williams and Laura Wilson from Fred Holidays at the Dalmahoy Golf Resort. He was telling me that sales of their air and river cruise products via the trade are booming and was so grateful for all the agent support. They are most certainly a company to watch!
Courtesy of Yolanda Fletcher from Cellet, I was whisked to London and found myself amongst all the show biz and razzmatazz of an NFL extravaganza at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
Got to see the New York Giants play the Green Bay Packers whose fans are known as Cheeseheads (don’t ask me why!). What a fab day and incredible atmosphere with the Budweiser and cheeseburgers going down a treat! Thank you, Yolanda, I am now a
huge fan!
Laura
Never a chore to visit the ‘Toon.
Was delighted to be invited by Miss Newcastle Airport herself, Laura Hartshorne, to their inaugural Trade Show at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. It was a great opportunity for the ‘great and the good’ of the North East travel trade to sit down with so many airlines, tour operators, cruise lines and many more to find out what they have on offer. Well done Laura – hope this is the start of many more similar events.
It’s always good to talk!
Phew!! That’s all folks!

The 2024 European itineraries will feature stops in unique ports including Taranto, Hamburg, Trollfjord and Edinburgh.

With Azamara’s latest ship, Azamara OnwardSM, making her maiden call in the small port of Koper alongside her three sisters – Azamara Journey®, Azamara Quest® and Azamara Pursuit® – this historic event was celebrated
by the Municipality of Koper with a ceremony in the beautiful Praetorian Palace, a 15th-century Venetian Gothic palace located in Tito Square.
Koper’s local government officials and port authorities came together with the captains of each Azamara ship to exchange plaques commemorating the sisters’ meeting. Azamara’s four ships will be meeting once again in Koper in the fall of 2023.

NEWS
TRAVEL INDUSTRY CONTRIBUTES
£80BN A YEAR TO UK ECONOMY
A new joint-report from ABTA and UKinbound, ‘International Travel: Powering the UK economy’, outlines the value of international travel to
the UK economy in terms of supporting jobs, economic contributions and taxes paid to
HM Treasury.
The report has found that each year UK international travel contributes £80bn to the UK economy, supports 1.5 million jobs – 4.5% of all jobs in the UK - provides £13.2bn to HM Treasury in taxes and generates £84bn in travel-related spending across the UK.
In terms of growth, the report reveals that with the right policy framework, inbound and outbound travel could outperform the average growth for the UK economy over the next five years, with inbound travel forecast
to grow 20%, and outbound travel 15%, compared to forecast growth of 10.3% in the wider UK economy by 2027.
ABTA and UKinbound produced the joint report to demonstrate to Government and politicians that the two sectors are interdependent and interlinked.
The research behind the report can be found in full on ABTA’s website at www.abta.com/internationaltravel.
