gregorz visits san Francisco
with GlasGow airport’s Glamore competition
TM
The future has arrived
coming out of hibernation so to speak, a er the depths of winter,
is somewhat of a relief (especially for gregorz!) and it’s always good to hear that agents have been busy during the peak booking period.
With Mother’s Day and the Easter holidays on the horizon, as well as plenty of travel programmes on the TV, hopefully the travelling public will be inspired to book even more breaks.
However, a er watching the images of the successful launch of Elon Musk’s new rocket, the Falcon Heavy, from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida and with his Tesla Roadster car now cruising through the solar system, who knows what sort of holidays we might be booking in the future?
An Intergalactic itinerary? An Upper Class reservation to the Milky Way? Instead of booking theme park tickets, a VIP pass for the Big Dipper? A short spa break to Venus? Sales could simply skyrocket!
Coming back down to Earth with a bump,
who knows how out of this world travel may become?

A thought for today, for tomorrow and for the future
a recent article in the media focused on an area that should be of increasing concern to the travel industry and is a problem that is not going to disappear sometime soon.
As an industry we rely on encouraging our customers to travel and speci cally to more exotic and far ung destinations. However, the very success of relatively cheap travel is what led to the phrase “mass tourism” that we have known for many years. The saying conjures up some apocalyptic vision of thousands of people herding round beaches, with little view of the sand.
However, the challenges of more and more people travelling, especially
to destinations that have a delicate infrastructure, means that as an
industry, we have to help manage the excesses whilst also trying to satisfy the expectations of our customers. Because if we are not careful, we may have a world where we will have nothing le to sell.
This month I’m travelling to Venice for a short break because I love the beauty and culture of this wonderful city, but it occurred to me that I’m contributing to the problem. So do many hundreds and
thousands of others and Venice is hitting back. With only 55,000 residents, the year- round population is being overwhelmed by 30 million tourists a year.
Santorini is no di erent: 2 million visitors, of whom 850,000 are from cruise ships who hardly spend any time on the island. Again, the good people of Santorini are hitting back with a cap of 8,000 visitors a day. Barcelona? 34 million visitors in 2016, which was an astonishing 25% increase from 2012. Gra ti against tourists is now not an uncommon sight. Dubrovnik? Game of Thrones has a lot to answer for. The town wants to cap the number of tourists to 4,000 per day because with 800,000 cruise passengers visiting, the Old Town can’t cope.
It’s not just the short haul destinations that are a ected. Machu Picchu has 5,000 visitors a day, despite UNESCO saying it is double the number they recommend. Far ung Bhutan charges up to $250 a day to visit the tiny principality and are seriously worried about the continued in ux.
Join us for the
88th AnnuAl
SPAA Dinner
1st March 2018
Crowne Plaza, GlasGow
Then there is the Taj Mahal, well known for being a bun ght to visit (though sometimes we forget it is a tomb) - this most magni cent edi ce is capping the numbers of locals that can visit, but not foreigners. That is a very sad indictment of how tourism is working today, when you are restricted from visiting a place in your own country. The Galapagos, Antarctica and heaven forbid - Everest, are all on the list of overrun attractions.
With hugely increased numbers of tourists emanating from China, India and other Far East countries and the endless march of low cost airline travel, it is clear we haven’t seen anything close to “mass tourism” yet.
The scale of possibility is hard to imagine, so we all need to be mindful that we have a responsibility not to destroy the very sights our customers wish to see. The big question is, how do we do that? On the one hand, destinations are slowly being restricted or closed o and on the other, how do we reconcile our ability to still be able to grow our businesses in the travel arena? Does anyone have the answer?

BEYOND BUSINESS TRAVEL, BELFAST
on leaving school at 18, i landed my rst real job in the travel industry and was bitten by the bug immediately! i didn’t go into that role thinking this would be the start of a lifelong career but very quickly fell in love with the business world and the quick paced nature of the travel game.
A er working in various parts of the travel industry including retail, tour operation and others, I found my passion was in business travel. I cut my teeth working with Selective Travel Management, where I was a Director for 17 years, but as my two children became adults, I was ready for another challenge and so nally made the jump to start my own Travel Management Company, Beyond Business Travel,
in 2010.
The most important thing to me at that time, was to build a team of people who shared both my vision and my hunger. I was keen to bring in sta who believed in this new business and who would be willing to put in the work required to make it successful.
We started out with just a handful of people in a small o ce. Now there are more than 20 of us and the business has a turnover of more than £13 million.
Looking around me today, I know that
we have managed to build a team that exceeds any I have worked in before. Our people have the expertise to address the challenges, leverage the opportunities and come up with real solutions. However, more than that, we have a unique sense of family and trust.
There have of course been many challenges during our seven-year long journey. I started Beyond Business Travel in 2010, during what turned out to be the worst recession in half a century. Friends and family thought I was crazy. New businesses are o en the rst hit during these periods and within our client and potential client base, travel budgets were drastically a ected and o en cut, due to the nancial crisis.
Despite this, we managed to make a strong start. We focused on streamlining our processes, perfecting our services and building relationships with the local and national business community. Getting
our name out there and making personal connections has been key to our success. I am a past Chair of Women In Business NI, served twice on the NI Chamber of Commerce Council and more recently, joined the board of an amazing social enterprise called the NOW Group which supports adults with learning di culties into training and employment, a cause close to my heart.
I haven’t masterminded it alone either.
I have been heavily supported along
the way by some of Northern Ireland’s greatest business minds. Being a member of Vistage UK has helped me to harness
To a young person embarking on a career in the business travel industry, I would say, congratulations! You couldn’t have picked a more exciting time!
the expertise of successful CEOs and MDs from a diverse range of non-competitive businesses and backgrounds.
Vistage Chair, Kate Marshall has been instrumental in providing individual insight, coaching and strategies to help me make better decisions and achieve better results for my company.
No man (or woman) is an island and having a group of peers to bounce ideas o and discuss problems with has been instrumental in Beyond Business Travel’s progression and expansion.
The perks of the jobs are great too! I travel thousands of miles every year and my favourite trips of the last decade have been to South America, Myanmar and South Africa.
To a young person embarking on a career in the business travel industry, I would say, congratulations! You couldn’t have picked a more exciting time! The sector
is evolving quickly, thanks mostly to technological advances. This has allowed us to change the way we book travel,
buy travel and support travellers in cost- e ective, convenient and such interesting ways. Who would have thought ten years ago we’d have holographic check-ins or robots delivering room service?
My advice to that person would be: be the best version of yourself by goal setting and continual learning, treat your team and clients like your family and always dream big!

Dates Visited: What Did I Like:
29th November - 3rd December 2017
Malta’s charm grew on me - it wasn’t an instant love a air!
Airline: Hotels:
We ew direct from Edinburgh with Ryanair to Malta. Before ying we, all enjoyed breakfast in the Aspire Lounge at Edinburgh Airport - the scrambled egg comes highly recommended!
Excursions:
In Valletta we enjoyed a 3-hour walking tour by our wonderful tour guide Isabella, (her knowledge is outstanding and this is not be missed) as well as tour of Mdina and Rabat. Make sure your clients visit this area and even spend a night or two - it’s beautiful, packed with history and still con ned within the city walls. Only cars of a limited number of residents, wedding cars and horses can enter within the walls, giving its nickname ‘the silent city’.
Destination Summary:
Valletta is the European City of Culture for 2018, a great year to visit.
I would highly recommend as a holiday resort and a short weekend break.
We stayed in 3 di erent hotels and visited 7! First stop was Gozo, with a private transfer by ferry! Checked into Kempinski and enjoyed a lovely a ernoon tea. Excellent sta and service. Kempinski is an ideal property for clients looking for a spa hotel.
We visited the recently refurbished Ta’Cenc, for a hosted dinner and liked the small, intimate feel of the hotel, as well as the beautifully decorated rooms.
We had lunch at the Westin Dragonara Hotel - wow - we all fell in love with this property! Stunning entrance, bar/restaurant and excellent service. The food was exceptional and we all agreed best food of the trip. Excellent for families and boasts a conference centre to appeal to the MICE market. Great pool area/beach club – not a sandy beach but by the water.
The Palace Hotel (contemporary and minimalist) and adjoining sister property, The Victoria Hotel
( which is more traditional and recently refurbished) both o ered good standards of accommodation.
Third evening was at The Phoenicia Hotel in Valletta - another wow - we were all very impressed! Dinner was hosted at the hotel - with ve-star food and service - as well as a small friendly bar to enjoy a er dinner drinks.

Working it out together - agents, cruise lines and clia
I recently read a erce debate on facebook about tipping on cruises and it was interesting to hear what the agents were saying based on their own and their clients’ experiences.
A cruise line executive once told me that they had ‘issues’ getting sta to work on ex UK ships because, he said, ‘Brits don’t like to tip’. This is nothing new, the debate has raged for years and the whole complex subject has come a long way from the days when envelopes were placed in your cabin on the last night of the cruise, which you were expected to ll with cash and then hand over to your cabin and table steward, bus boy etc.
Gratuities can de nitely be o putting for some clients. However, in my opinion, the level of service on a cruise liner, whether a two or ve-star ship, is generally excellent and the debate is how these sta , many of whom go that extra mile, should be rewarded.
As an industry, we need to have a debate about this and work out the best way forward, to see if together, we can all come up with a suitable solution.
Ship
of the Month...
cMv’s the Magellan - a great business opportunity for agents
if you have clients looking for a holiday which o ers unbeatable value for money, great on board service from a friendly and attentive crew, comfortable accommodation and quality food, then look no further than cruise and Maritime’s Magellan.
Add in the bonus of departures from Newcastle or Dundee with a good variety of itineraries and you have a money making proposition for your agency. If your customers are solo travellers, then Magellan really stands out - 150 twin cabins put aside
for single occupancy with just a 25% supplement and a great programme of events, including welcome cocktail party and get togethers to ensure they meet other guests. This alone is well worth promoting.
When your clients rst embark, they will be met by one of the smiling crew and escorted to their cabin. The ship is spacious,
with well appointed lounges, a relaxing spa and easy on the eye decor. Cruise and Maritime o er a nely tuned programme of on board entertainment and activities that will appeal to everyone and it’s worth noting that the drink prices are very reasonable.
Clearly the product is pitched at older British passengers (no children on board) who want comfort, quality and good service with interesting ports of call. A high satisfaction rate and repeat factor tells you all you need to know.
Magellan operates seven cruises departing from The Tyne and Dundee in 2018 and will likely be back next year.
Why not go and see the ship for yourself, talk to the CMV sales team, target speci c cruises or sell it to your solo travellers - it may help your cruise business to grow.

The Canny Lad...
Darren PhilliPs
Hi everyone!
The Geordie Ball is fast approaching, taking place on Thursday 8th March at the Marriott Gosforth Park Hotel.
To date, there are over 300 agent suppliers and travel agents booked, so it’s going to be another fun lled late night! If you haven’t already booked a table or you need a ticket, please let me know and I will put you on the list ([email protected] ).
This year’s charity is once again, Reubens Retreat. We all want Nic and her team to reach their goal and with your generous donations, we can maybe help them get a little bit closer!
From a business point of view, it seems all is going well here in the North East, with agents reporting a good start to the year, with long haul being a particularly good seller, followed by cruise and even bucket and spade making a return to the high street agencies!
I hope that this is a result of people realising the added protection and bene ts you get from booking with a travel agent! If this is the case, I will be extremely pleased!
Cruise Sales
When I had my travel agency, for 10 years the “book it yourself” trend went in full ow, especially for the short haul beach market.
A few supplier failures and
unforeseen travel catastrophes
and volcanic eruptions later, soon taught the travelling public that booking it yourself is not always best!
Let’s hope that customers continue to book with agents and give the hard working travel professionals we have in our industry, the success they all deserve!
Happy selling guys and looking forward to seeing you all at the Geordie Ball!
Darren
Opportunity of the Month...
Look to the East!
specialisation brings rewards. a lot of agents saw
cruise as a great opportunity to expand their product knowledge and specialise in a market that was undersold and under promoted. Fast forward to today, and specialist cruise agents have not only made a name for themselves, but have also been well rewarded with good levels of repeat business.
For agents who want to expand their cruise product knowledge further, now may be the time to look to the East. More and more cruise lines are basing ships ex Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Yokohama, Sydney and Auckland etc and for longer seasons too.
These cruises o er some fantastic itineraries, access to world class destinations and travel experiences in real style and comfort. They also o er a great opportunity to earn good commission.
In this market, it is essential to know the ins and outs of all the visa regulations and costs, especially for entering the Indian and Chinese ports or airports, or the procedure for entry into Vietnam and Cambodia etc.
Knowledge of the visa requirements, along with the embarkation and disembarkation ports will all help you to o er a more specialised service to your clients.
Look to the East, be creative and hopefully you will be well rewarded!

Gregorz... The well travelled bear visits...
Leave your heart in
the City by the Bay
toP tiPs
46
san francisco
From its sparkling bay and diverse neighbourhoods, to world- famous attractions, san Francisco takes its place as one of the world’s great cities. this
bear was very excited to visit, had high expectations and wasn’t disappointed! there are three things that san Francisco is most famous for – the golden gate Bridge, alcatraz and cable cars.
The stunning Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most photographed bridges in the world and whether your clients choose to drive, walk or cycle across it, (or even just admire it from a distance), they will never forget
the view!
Originally a lighthouse, Alcatraz later became a federal prison housing notorious convicts such as Al Capone and is now one of San Francisco’s top tourist attractions. A visit to the Rock includes a tour of the cell house where prisoners lived. Made infamous by not only its inmates but Hollywood many times over, it is a fascinating place to visit (it even made the hairs on my head stand on end, which is unusual for a bear!).
San Francisco is one of the few places in the world where you can ride on a national landmark, as Tony Bennett famously sang
‘where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars...I le my heart in San Francisco’. The famous manually operated cable car system is enjoyed by almost 10 million people each year, with Union Square one of the best places to jump on board.
The city also has plenty of other attractions too! Make a point of calling at Fisherman’s Wharf, with its waterfront marketplace and historic ships in the harbour. It’s a great place to wander, enjoy lunch in one of the fantastic restaurants or perhaps watch sea lions basking in the sun. It’s also a good departure point for a trip to Alcatraz, as boat charters and sightseeing boats sail to the Rock
from here.
San Francisco also boasts some of the steepest streets in the country and none more so than Lombard Street - known as the crookedest street in America! A walk or drive down it will give your heart rate a healthy boost.
See you again soon, San Fran!
3 Make sure you book your clients’ Alcatraz trip in advance, either on
its own or as part of a city tour, as these tours are always busy. Alcatraz Cruises is the o cial ferry provider to the Rock and back. Departures start at 09:30 am and run every half an hour throughout the day, with tours costing circa $40.
3 To get exclusive deals and discounts, visit www.citypass.com or for a
Go San Francisco card, try www.smartdestinations.com

garY reavelY speaks to
Jonathan hinKles, Managing Director, Loganair
Loganair is a much loved institution – does being the current custodian bring additional pressures?
Loganair means di erent things to di erent people and you have to be mindful of this and conscious of the brand - respecting the tradition and history of the company. As you say, we are a much loved Scottish institution and I am certainly very aware of this when taking any decisions.
Our recent re-branding has gone down very well across the board. The crews’ uniforms have been well received and certainly deliver the wow factor when they walk through the airport terminals!
A key part of my role is keeping all the political constituents together. One day a fortnight I am out around our network – such as Orkney and Shetland - meeting with the local councils.
It’s important for me to ensure we are not only visible,
but actively listening to any concerns they may have. We understand and appreciate our vital obligation to these island communities.
Tell us about your link up with easyJet
Working with easyJet is good for us in a number of ways. The biggest perhaps, is that by using their distribution power, we e ectively get an additional shop window for Loganair.
Initially easyJet are selling Loganair tickets point to point, so for instance, when you go onto their website and ask for a Glasgow to Barra ight and you then book through them, you get a Loganair con rmation.
Ideally we would like to see a situation where if a passenger wants to travel from Gatwick to Glasgow and then Stornoway, instead of requiring two reservations, they would only need one.
This link up gets our name out to many more people than we could have possibly achieved alone. All of a sudden you’ve got a website that I think, is the 10th largest airline website in the world in terms of visitor numbers and our brand is on there!
Is the new code share with BA going well?
Yes! It’s all working very well and we have been seeing a good level of bookings coming through. We have extended the code share, added in new routes and seen incremental business as a result. The relationship has historically worked well because you have big frequency meeting big frequency. This gives the best range of options for the customer. I am looking forward to even more success from this in the future.
What does the future hold for Loganair?
On the airline partnerships front, we signed new arrangements with Hainan Airlines and Thomas Cook and have new deals in prospect with Turkish Airlines, Air France KLM and others. We have the ability to o er feeder tra c to people from not only Scottish airports but Manchester too.
There is a role there for us to grow the potential in this marketplace and over a period of time, help us to migrate over to larger aircra . We will need to go through a eet replacement programme in the next ve years.
We have also announced several new routes for summer 2018. We dabbled last year with a couple - Norwich to Jersey worked phenomenally well and Glasgow to Bergen, although initially caused some concern, worked fantastically well too.
We didn’t think we would get late bookings to Bergen, however, bookings have been coming in throughout the season. It’s been a real learning curve and due to the success, will be repeated again this summer, twice a week. We will also add a new service from Inverness to Bergen and others, too.
What do you do in your spare time?
Most evenings I work! Weekends are either a combination of being up here or down south – I still have a house and base in Surrey, so at weekends, either my other half or I commutes to meet up. If we are up here, we tend to be out and about on the bikes round the islands. We especially love Millport and the Isle of Bute. It clears the head before returning to work on a Monday!
