WE’RE ALL GETTING READY FOR A... SUMMER HOLIDAY

As we dream of balmy days, a cocktail or two and some summer sun, we suddenly realise that the case just isn’t big enough - especially for a fortnight away!
Latest research shows that a rising number of holidaymakers are choosing to go solo - and there are numerous holiday options available for ‘going it alone’ and enjoying a summer adventure as operators and cruise lines increasingly target this market.
Whether solo, a family or a couple, a holiday in the Middle East is always a great choice - for sun, sea, shopping and cultural attractions.
Enjoy your summer holiday wherever it takes you - and don’t forget to pack the sunscreen!

PRITY BAHANDA - GOING FOR GOLD
Congratulations to Prity Bahanda, who celebrated a milestone recently after achieving GOLD status as a Travel Counsellor.
After starting with Travel Counsellors back in 2000, when the TC head office was just outside Bolton, with a handful
of employees and under fifty home workers, Prity has seen quite a few significant changes, including the HQ now based in Manchester and the number of counsellors has now risen into the thousands.
The criteria to attain Gold is based on earnings rather than gross sales so it’s a fantastic achievement - well done Prity!

“David’s extensive experience working with Flybe will definitely be of immense use while handling leading regional carriers like the Turks and Caicos-based interCaribbean Airways and the Port Moresby-based PNG Air, “ Linzi added. In his new role, David will be responsible for creating brand awareness for AirlinePros clients in the region as well as heading up the sales and marketing efforts.
“This feels like a return to home of sorts,” said David Paterson. “It is a pleasure to be working with clients like interCaribbean Airways and PNG Air. I also look forward to working with my old and new travel trade partners again while adding to the AirlinePros Northern Europe portfolio.”

HAINAN AIRLINES
TO OPERATE TWICE- WEEKLY ROUTE BETWEEN EDINBURGH AND BEIJING
Edinburgh Airport will welcome the return of a direct service to Beijing this summer as Hainan Airlines touches down in Scotland.
Hainan Airlines has announced twice-weekly flights from Edinburgh to Beijing, commencing 26th June until 8th October 2023.
Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, said: “The return of direct flights to Beijing is fantastic news as we gear up for a hugely exciting summer and is further evidence of the strong recovery we’re seeing here at Edinburgh.
“This service will be the only one operating between Scotland and China when it is introduced and is a real show of faith in the market by Hainan Airlines. This important connectivity will provide a boost to Scotland’s universities and tourism industry, open up a wealth of new business opportunities and enable better access
to other parts of the world.
“We’re sure it will be highly valued whether it be by students travelling between the two countries to study, families reconnecting, or tourists travelling to visit
new places.”
Barrhead Travel has officially opened its relocated store in Silverburn Shopping Centre, which will be the second location with a paperless window, as part of the group’s commitment to streamlining sustainability efforts.

Hello and welcome everyone to my latest update on our SPAA.
We are nearing the halfway point of the calendar year and I have to say time
is passing by very quickly. Although
I’m sure we’re all very grateful to be so busy, we do need to stop and catch our breath every so often and recharge the batteries. Hopefully the eagerly anticipated Summer in the City event will give us that very opportunity - more on that later.
Good news on additional services
from Scotland continue to help us all with more capacity bolstering existing routes across the Atlantic and of course, a new direct service to China, which I’m sure will be highly welcomed.
Delta Airlines had a launch event at the US Consulate in Edinburgh for their new Atlanta service which I was fortunate to attend with our Secretary and Council Members along with MSP’s, representatives of the Scottish Parliament and local business leaders. The discussions were all positive on the increase of service and optimistic views for continued growth, all essential for the economy in
Scotland as a whole.
By the time you read this, we will have hosted, along with IATA and BARUK,
a dinner in Edinburgh with the theme of Developing Scotland’s International Air Connectivity. Attendees will be Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs) including co-Chairs of the Cross-Party Group on Aviation (CPG), Transport Scotland (DfT equivalent), airline delegates and trade bodies BAR UK, IATA and of course, the Scottish Passenger Agents Association (SPAA).
The topic for discussion will be the Scottish Aviation Strategy and what international and legacy carriers desire from the strategy and particularly how the strategy can be used to encourage international route development, thereby enhancing Scotland’s international connectivity.
The roundtable discussion will also cover topics such as passenger taxes, aviation infrastructure (including the introduction of US pre-clearance at Edinburgh), jobs and skills, air freight, the development of a SAF industry for Scotland and the important role of travel agents.
THE VOICE OF TRAVEL IN SCOTLAND
I’m sure you will all agree that it’s vital the SPAA continue on behalf of the travel trade here in Scotland to keep the industry high on the agenda of all the political parties in Holyrood.
A report on the outcome of the discussion will be released in due course.
Continuing on with our previous correspondence and meetings with previous Minister Ivan McKee, we
are now engaging with Scottish Government with their new Ministers to work together to try and provide help for the high street and the increased running costs that you are all
suffering with.
Our next SPAA event - Summer in the City - held this year at the Sheraton in Edinburgh on 21st June, is always a great night, especially with the Carnival theme. It’s good to catch up and have a fun night with friends and colleagues from all over the Scottish travel community allowing us a short interval from our busy business lives, along with raising money for our children’s charity, which on this occasion is Hopscotch.
Hope to see you all there in your various outfits!
Take care and stay safe,
Mike Tibbert SPAA President

THE VOICE OF TRAVEL IN SCOTLAND
Meet new SPAA Council Member...
Tanya Cooper,
Head of Personal Travel Consultants at Hays Travel
Having always worked for a multiple travel company, I moved to Hays Travel in 2019 (after the collapse of Thomas Cook), where I have broadened my learning and experience of the world of Independents.
I was appointed Head of Personal Travel Consultants across the UK and Northern Ireland in August 2022 and now manage a team of operations support and business development managers. Recruiting new and experienced personal travel consultants (PTCs) to join the existing network of 400 Hays Travel homeworkers also sits within my remit and involves working closely with many suppliers, as well as self-employed and employed
team members.
As a member of Hays Travel’s Senior Leadership Team, I join the weekly
Board meetings, which keep me updated on all areas of the business and provide valuable insight into the factors impacting our travel and tourism sector.
I am delighted to have joined the SPAA Council and have already been made to feel very welcome. In the short time since becoming an SPAA member I have attended and helped out at a networking lunch, a brilliant dinner in February and a fun
quiz night.
It’s been particularly useful to receive feedback from the suppliers I have been allocated and regular supplier catch-ups are already in the diary; I will be submitting any useful insight I receive into our members’ updates.
Going forward, I am keen to gather feedback from our SPAA members and associates on how beneficial they find the current structure of events and to hear any suggested improvements they would like to see.
I have devised a questionnaire that all members will receive later in
the summer and hope as many as possible will take the opportunity to respond with their views.
I believe the SPAA is a great community of people and unique across the UK; it really does give multiples and independents the opportunity to join forces and ensure the Scottish Government is aware
of the hot topics impacting our industry and being encouraged to act on our behalf where necessary. I look forward to working alongside my fellow Council members and supporting everyone in our
SPAA community.

Where’s William?
Last month, I joined a river cruise on the beautiful Emerald Dawn from Koblenz to Amsterdam: a speciality cruise alongside Brian Cunningham, head gardener at Scone Palace. This was part of a group departure, which have been proving popular for us recently, as they provide the opportunity for like-minded people, such as from local clubs and societies, to travel together. It’s a growing market and we’re very happy to support your groups opportunities.
We arrived to a warm welcome from the crew of Emerald Dawn in Koblenz. Koblenz is a beautiful city on the Rhine and we took a cable car across the river for outstanding views of the surrounds - we could even see the mouth of the Moselle River which we also cruise along and is well known for its excellent wine production.
We sailed later that day to Cologne and it was time for some gardening advice from Brian at the majestic botanical gardens, which went down a treat with the group. We then set sail for Amsterdam and the real highlight for many, which is Keukenhof gardens – a true masterpiece of flower arranging with vivid colours everywhere we looked. Brian, once again, gave us an in-depth tour and explanation
of what we were seeing – I think we all came back mini experts on plants and trees.
It was then farewell to Emerald Dawn and Amsterdam after a memorable cruise.
We have a fantastic Second Guest Sails Free offer currently available on our 2023 Rhine river cruises PLUS new cruise only fares. Visit emeraldcruises.co.uk for more information. To enquire about booking your own groups, please get

LOGANAIR SIGNS INTERLINE AGREEMENT WITH AER LINGUS
Loganair has partnered up with Aer Lingus, offering customers new access to North American routes via Dublin and Manchester.
Loganair currently flies direct to Dublin from Aberdeen and Inverness, meaning customers bound for America can now access Aer Lingus’ transatlantic destinations with the added advantage of clearing US Immigration at Dublin before departure, removing the requirement to be cleared upon arrival stateside.
Additionally, Loganair passengers from Isle of Man and Newquay can now also connect on to Aer Lingus’ North American routes via the airline’s Manchester hub, further increasing regional connectivity.
Loganair has added a third service between Glasgow and Donegal this summer, operating from July to October.
Luke Lovegrove, Chief Commercial Officer, Loganair said: “Since we went on sale with our new service to Donegal from 1st July, we have been impressed with the strength of demand and after listening to customer feedback about our days of operation, we are happy to include a new Wednesday service from 12th July, just in time for the peak summer period.”
Eilís Docherty, Donegal Airport Managing Director said: “We are looking forward to welcoming Loganair back to Donegal and are delighted to see the increase in frequency, which will give our passengers the option for midweek travel in addition to the Saturday and Sunday flights which are already showing great demand.”

Hello everyone,
I’m excited to be back speaking with you all once again and it’s with great pleasure to let you know that smaller ship Balmoral has now returned to the port of Rosyth for the next three months!
It was just at the beginning of this month when she kickstarted her wonderful summer season with a fascinating 13-night cruise, visiting cities of the Baltic and the breathtaking scenic cruising around the Stockholm Archipelago.
For your customers wanting to enjoy their own scenic cruising this summer, then a five-night Norwegian break departs from Rosyth on 3rd August. Offering a taste of Norway’s breathtaking fjords, this short cruise showcases rugged, mountainous scenery along the Romsdalen valley and for your more adventurous guests, a chance to ramble with a local atop Mount Fløyen, rewarding your customers with city and fjordland views away from busier vantage points.
Or earlier in the season, July will see Balmoral embark
on a 15-night adventure to visit rugged and remote Spitsbergen. On this cruise, there will be a chance to witness the midnight sun from within the Arctic Circle and for your wildlife loving customers, a chance to join marine conservation charity ORCA out on deck to spot whales in their natural habitats.
And excitingly, the second part of the summer sale is about to get underway. Starting 15th June, your customers can sail with us from £699 per person and enjoy special savings on selected 2023 cruises. What’s more, from 21st June our offers go live for a selection of next year’s longer cruises with free door-to-door transfers of up to 200 UK mainland miles.

IF YOU COULD INVITE 3 FAMOUS PEOPLE FROM HISTORY TO HAVE DINNER WITH YOU - WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY?
Freddie Mercury - the greatest musician ever.
Neil Armstrong - the first man on the Moon - as my first television memory is watching the moon landings.
Captain James Cook - to hear about his famous expeditions around the world!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE DESTINATION?
Jasper in Alberta, Canada. I always feel that I am at home there, with its amazing scenery, mountains and lakes. We love to hike looking for the wildlife - bears, moose, elks etc.
WHAT IS YOU FAVOURITE FILM? That has to be Bohemian Rhapsody!
WHAT WAS THE LAST CONCERT THAT YOU ATTENDED?
Queen and Adam Lambert.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE KARAOKE SONG OR ONE YOU LOVE TO SING ALONE IN THE CAR?
The Proclaimers - 500 miles - perfect for a long drive.
IS THERE ANYTHING PEOPLE WOULD BE
ADVICE YOU WERE EVER GIVEN?
SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU ?
When I started my first job there were signs all over saying “The customer is the reason for our work - not an interruption to it”.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE JUST JOINING THE TRAVEL INDUSTRY?
Live the dream, take every opportunity to travel and broaden your knowledge. It is so much easier to sell a destination when you have personally visited.
IF TIME, DISTANCE AND COST WERE NO OBJECT - WHAT WOULD BE YOUR PERFECT DAY?
Watching the sunrise over Angkor Wat, Cambodia. An early morning hot air balloon watching wildlife over South Africa. A hike to the Beehive at Lake Louise with Afternoon Tea. Lunch at Machu Picchu. Climb Sydney Harbour Bridge, followed by dinner on a luxury yacht in Sydney Harbour,
My wife Joan and I are huge Queen fans. We travel around the world to see Queen and Adam Lambert in concert. In October, for my special birthday, we will be touring the USA following the American leg of their tour. We also love the Queen musical - ‘We Will Rock You’ - and have seen it 94 times between us!
HAVE YOU EVER BOOKED ANYONE FAMOUS?
When Little Mix were in X Factor, we booked Jade and Perrie’s mams to travel to London and stay over for the show every week. After they won, Jade called into the shop with some goodies to personally thank us.
WHAT WAS THE BEST PIECE OF BUSINESS
WHAT IS THE FAVOURITE PART
OF YOUR JOB?
Having the opportunity to visit so many amazing places throughout the world.
WHAT WAS THE MOST UNUSUAL

SALESMATTERS WITH... BALKAN HOLIDAYS
Tell us about your direct flights from Northern Ireland, North East England and Scotland.
We operate our own charter flights starting in May from Teesside and Newcastle and June from Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Later in
the year, we will commence a twice weekly flight from both Teesside and Newcastle Airport giving customers the opportunity to fly 7, 10, 11 and
14 nights.
Which resorts and hotels are selling well for Summer 2023 and do you still have high season availability?
With Sunny Beach being our main resort and the late prices being so amazing, we tend to find that this resort sells the most.
However, we are seeing a lot of bookings come through for Nessebar and Sozopol, with the three-star Hotel Victoria in the Old Town of Nessebar and four-star Hotel Selena in Sozopol gaining a lot of popularity.
We believe this is down to some great Facebook posts we have shared lately (agents can find ready made deals on the facebook page, Balkan Holidays Travel Agents).
Do you have a favourite resort and hotel that an agent could sell?
Personally I love Sozopol. This is
a short 45-minute transfer from Bourgas Airport and is what I would call our most authentic resort. It’s fairly unspoilt by tourism and is steeped in history with a beautiful bay, lots of local eateries and a little market.
The locals name it the City of Salvation! Hotel Selena is the most popular hotel there with many customers returning year after year!
LYNSEY JONES
Value for money is hugely
important to consumers - is it
true that Bulgaria offers some
of the very best value around?
Absolutely! Bulgaria offers the best value local prices in Europe and that’s official! Sunny Beach regularly wins the Post Office Money ‘Best Value for Money’ barometer. They monitor the cost of everyday holiday items such as suntan lotion, a coffee and an evening meal in a restaurant plus beer and wine. For example, a three course meal in Sunny Beach costs about
£15 per person, a bottle of beer is approximately £2 and a bottle of wine costs from £2! You can’t beat Bulgaria for value!
Share with us details of any successful promotions by agents that have brought in extra sales.
In my areas, we have seen a lot of growth through branches boosting posts on Facebook and I welcome agents to contact me if they would like to discuss doing this further. We regularly post deals on our Agents’ Facebook page and agents can download these and use them to promote our great value holidays.
Do you offer special rates
for group travel?
We do offer group discounts, so if agents have a group enquiry, then it’s best that they call our reservations department who can look into special offers for them.
Do you offer agents’
concessionary prices?
We have a very appealing concession for our agents. If agents book 20
pax, they can take £250 off their own holiday, 40 pax they can take £500 off their own holiday and for true Balkan selling agents - if they sell 80 pax - we give £800 off their own holiday!
We have had agents use this concession already! This is to any hotel and any date too!

Hi there Peeps!
We are sailing! Delighted to have been invited to the Ambassador Cruise Line naming ceremony for their second ship – Ambition. Godmother of the ship is double Olympic sailing gold medal winner Shirley Robertson who performed her duties brilliantly. On board Ambition the accommodation, service, food and entertainment is
of a very high standard and she will be cruising from the Tyne, Dundee and Belfast in 2024 and 2025. It’s a great business opportunity with no fly cruising and fantastic itineraries.
Jill Niven
It’s always a pleasure to meet Miss Qatar Airways, Jill Niven. She was telling me how well the EDI – DOH route is doing – so much so, it’s going double daily soon. Some of you may know that she is the ‘Alan Titchmarsh’ of the airline business and on our visit to a garden centre for coffee, she professionally pointed out all the plants
–
– is there no end to her talents!

founder of the company, with the ship named after him, was on board leading this voyage to the Arctic - naturally
he was desperate to have his picture taken with me so I was happy to oblige. Check them out for clients looking for these bucket list voyages.
Next up was a visit to The Toon to be the VIB (very important bear) guest of honour at a fantastic travel agents’ Greek night hosted by one of my biggest fans, Ms Newcastle Airport, Laura Hartshorne.
They were celebrating the launch of Aegean Airlines new twice weekly service from NCL to Athens. Vicky from Aegean and Penny from Celestyal Cruises were there talking about the range of Greek island cruises agents can book based on these flights - a great sales opportunity for agents.

Bright Training
Quality product training at its best in the form of Bright was the next event in my packed social diary. Almost 50 agents came along to meet the likes of African Pride, Kirker, APT and many more suppliers to find out all about some amazing parts of the world, different holiday types and products.
Off to the Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen. Adventure cruising and small ship expeditions have become big business with agents cashing in on the demand for amazing experiences and I was delighted to be invited
on board the Greg Mortimer of ae expeditions. The great man himself,

VIEW FROM THE NORTH EAST
Hi guys, summer is well
and truly upon us and
even though the weather has
been great, reports are that bookings are still very good and looking positive!
On my travel agent travels this month, I have been
to Leeds, Chester, North East, Humberside and South Yorkshire! Lot of agents are reporting bookings for 2025 and if you are booking smaller group tours - it’s always best to book well in advance and secure your place.
Agents have also said that ‘bucket list’ destinations are featuring very highly now with clients as the after effects of the pandemic have heightened people’s curiosity to travel further and more adventurously too. There will always be a demand for bucket and spade holidays but ‘bucket list’ is the new ‘bucket and spade’!
I have got a few events coming up - TIPTO in Sunderland and then up to Falkirk with the lovely Amy, our tour guru in Scotland, then a BP forum in Manchester later in June - so no doubt will see a lot of you over the next few weeks.
But before then, I’m off to see agents in Lancashire and the Northwest for a few days.
Have a great June booking bonanza and hope to see you soon on my travels or at the events!
Happy selling,
Darren

The Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort Fam trip review by Christine Forbes, Travel Guru
I had always wanted to go to Jamaica, as it’s always intrigued me and it didn’t disappoint. It’s like a really happy place, with
a buzz about it that is hard
to describe!
En route from the airport to the hotel, we witnessed some real life Jamaica, with local people selling all different things to cars on the roads. I have never seen anything like it. People were also washing windscreens of cars in return for some money. Some had cakes, some had peanuts wrapped in paper cones as well as sweets, lollies and pastries.
On arrival at The Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort, there was a DJ playing music in the lobby area and a drinks cart. We were offered some refreshments and the bell boys took our cases to our rooms. It was really impressive and the atmosphere was great!
I was lucky enough to be allocated
a brand new Junior Suite with a plunge pool. It was immaculate and included a nightly turndown service!
The mini-bar was replenished daily with beer, juice and sweets. Room Service is also included in the all- inclusive package within certain times each day.
The resort is huge and facilities
are shared with the Lady Hamilton Resort. As a mum with three children, I am always sussing
out what a hotel has to offer for children and families. This hotel had everything a family could want. A mini water park, kids clubs, games room and a private beach with free non motorised water sports.
There are 10 restaurants within the resort and as long as you make a reservation, these are all included in your all-inclusive package, which is a great bonus. You could eat somewhere different every night. My favourites were the fish restaurant by the beach at Lady Hamilton called Poseidon and
the Asian/Japanese.
There is always something going on at the resort for all ages. I loved the infinity bar, where there were local bands or silent disco or a
DJ. It varied. Also downstairs, at the amphitheatre, there were shows and the kids mini disco. The entertainment team were fab and it didn’t take much to get them dancing even when they weren’t
working! They were all great fun. There was also entertainment occasionally at the beach. White Night with a fire and light show
was amazing. The Sports bar was really good with table games which I thought my two boys would love as would any kids.
This resort is located in Montego T
Bay which is lovely. We went to B
Negril to visit Margaritaville which N
was beautiful with a picturesque w
beach. The banana boat was a good b
laugh. Ricks Cafe was a highlight of l
the whole trip too! The views were t
wonderful and the sunset was just w
beautiful. I even jumped offff the cliffff. b
I couldn’t go all the way to Jamaica I
and the famous Rick’s Cafe without doing that (even though it was
the smallest one that kids could probably jump, I was chuffed that I did it)!
I would love to go back with my family and experience more of Jamaica. In particular, I would love to see Ocho Rios and experience some more local culture. The Dunns River would be on my list too as well as the Bob Marley tour.

For more and more people, a solo holiday is the preferred option. As the world’s longest established travel company, we’ve watched this trend emerge in real time; today, more than a quarter of Cox & Kings guests are solo travellers. But what motivates people to set off on their own?
A 2021 Statista survey revealed the top reasons given for travelling as an individual: wanting to see the world without having to wait for others, the feeling of freedom and independence, the desire to meet new people, personal growth and having different interests to friends and partners.
Travelling solo needn’t mean travelling alone, of course. Around 52% of
solo travellers express an interest in escorted touring, according to Mintel research. However, the same study revealed that 60% of respondents believe the travel industry does not cater well enough for solo travellers. That is something Cox & Kings is seeking to change.
We have designed a range of adventurous group tours specifically for solo travellers. Each is free of single supplements; based in handpicked, high-quality hotels; and visits some
of our most popular destinations including Peru, India, Costa Rica
and Sri Lanka.
It’s the chance for your clients to explore free of compromise, while benefiting from the award-winning support we offer every guest.

SOLO HOLIDAYS
NEWMARKET HOLIDAYS LAUNCHES SOLO TRAVELLER COLLECTION
Newmarket Holidays’ Solo Traveller Collection features 25 short and long haul tours, with five that have been curated exclusively
for solo travellers.
New solo-only options range from the Scottish Highlands (from £825pp), the culinary and cultural highlights of Western Sicily (from £1,249pp), the Croatian islands of Korčula and Hvar (from £1,889pp), a Kenyan safari and beach break (from £3,479pp) and a tour through India’s Golden Triangle (from £2,875pp).
In addition, 20 of the operator’s existing UK, Europe and worldwide itineraries have been adapted to offer no single supplements on selected departure dates throughout the year. Options include a nature-centred getaway to the Norwegian fjords, a trip to the vineyards fringing the Douro River of Portugal, or a tour to discover Inca treasures in Peru’s Sacred Valley.
Head of Trade Sales, Richard Forde explains: “Our trade partners love our wide choice of departure dates and competitive pricing on our escorted tours. They’ve been asking for more of the same for the solo traveller and this is the catalyst. Agents have not only 25 tours to choose from but also a vast range of dates to offer their customers and two fantastic options for the solo traveller.”
The new launch is a response to Newmarket Holidays’ own search and booking data that shows a big rise in single person bookings in the 50 plus age group, alongside evidence from independent reports and Google search data that shows ‘solo travel’ is a growing trend.
