Take a roll of the dice
Well here we are, now in September with autumn on its way and darker nights ahead.
However, as the leaves turn, the agent event calendar is filling up fast! It’s great to catch up with all our travel trade friends in person again - both old and new. The next big event in Scotland is of course, the SPAA Annual Travel Awards, which is back on the cards this year in November, so don’t forget to cast your votes!
It’s also good to have our transatlantic flights flying again too - ideal for a trip to the Big Apple, to take ‘a gamble’ on the dazzling city of Las Vegas or catch the fall colours and vast stunning scenery in Canada. New York is, of course, known as the ‘city that never sleeps’ and Vegas as the ‘entertainment capital of the world' - customers are definitely spoilt for choice with these holiday options!
Remember - wherever the dice fall - we are all winners.

EASYJET HOLIDAYS ADDS MORE FREE CHILD PLACES
easyJet holidays has added thousands more free child places for summer 2023.
The tour operator is now offering free child places on over 200 hotels for next summer, with holidays priced from £377 per person on a variety of holidays and destinations - from Turkey, to Spain and Greece, which sees an additional 40 hotels offering great value for families.
Paul Bixby, easyJet holidays’ Commercial Director, said:
“As the weather starts to cool and children return to school, we’re seeing an increase in families booking ahead to next summer, making the most of the great value we offer and getting something in the diary to look forward to."
easyJet holidays has appointed Kelly Walker as new Head of Distribution to lead its travel trade partnership division.
Previously with James Villas, Kelly Walker will lead the easyJet holidays in- house distribution team which, with the help of more than 3,000 agents, has played a significant role in its growth.
The tour operator continues to support its relationship with the trade, with the extension of its ONEADULT promo code for another year, a training roadshow across the UK underway and more FAM trips in planning.
EMIRATES CELEBRATE 15 YEARS AT NEWCASTLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
This September marks 15 years since Emirates commenced flying from Newcastle International Airport to Dubai.
Emirates’ Dubai service has carried more than 2.5 million passengers to and from the region since 2007. Initially operating a daily flight utilising an A330 aircraft, the airline upgraded the service during 2012 to a larger Emirates’ wide- body Boeing 777 aircraft, fitted in a two-class configuration split between Business and Economy.
Since restarting in October 2021, Emirates has returned
to a five weekly service, operating on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, departing Newcastle at 21:10 and arriving into Dubai at 07:25 the following day.
At the end of October 2022, the flight will be moving to an earlier departure time of 13:00, arriving into Dubai at 00:15 the following day, making it easier for North East passengers to connect to long-haul destinations including Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and the Indian Ocean.
Richard Jewsbury, Emirates Divisional Vice President in
the UK, commented: “Fifteen years marks a significant milestone for Emirates and Newcastle International Airport. We are delighted to celebrate this long standing relationship and look forward to continue providing our world-class services in the region following increased demand
post pandemic.”
FLY FROM ABERDEEN TO OSLO WITH LOGANAIR
This month has seen the launch of Loganair’s direct flights from Aberdeen to Oslo.
The airline will operate six flights per week to Oslo Gardermoen Airport from Sunday-Friday, with fares starting from £79 one-way.
The year-round link between Aberdeen and the Norwegian capital will be operated by Loganair’s 49-seat Embraer 145 Regional Jet aircraft, with weekday flights leaving Aberdeen at 08:30 and arriving in Oslo at 11:05 local time. The westbound flight will depart Oslo at 11:40 local time and arrive in Aberdeen at 12:20.
Sunday flights will depart Aberdeen at the later time of 13:30 and leave Oslo at 16:40 local time, enabling both leisure and business travellers to make the most of their weekend.
The route from Aberdeen to Oslo is Loganair’s latest international Norwegian connection this year, following the revival of flights from Edinburgh to Bergen and Stavanger in June following the pandemic.

Hello and welcome everyone to my latest update on our SPAA.
With the weather in Scotland now returning to our normal rain and wind, we all are grateful for the opportunity to seek sunnier climes. From the feedback we receive at the SPAA, business is continuing to go in the right direction for our members with a month on month increased trajectory of bookings and overall sales. Long may it continue.
Leisure and business travel is increasing and I myself have a business meeting arranged in Florida for October but have now experienced again first-hand the impact of the flight schedule reductions and changes to capacity limits and ongoing staff shortages.
In short, the domestic connection
was cancelled and although there was an alternative flight offered, it meant spending an unacceptable amount of time just waiting at the airport when in reality, we need to minimise our time out of the office due to the ongoing pressures of running the business
day to day.
I seriously worry about the long
term implications of this for flight connectivity via London - every month that passes with these ongoing issues, diverts more and more passenger traffic away to utilising alternative connections. I suspect these carriers that do fly from London may have a severe struggle to recover or even retain current market share as the travelling public look to alternatives and start to build up membership
and mileage points accruals with other airlines.
The long term implication for Scotland then becomes an issue as without
the connection traffic the viability of a domestic network will almost certainly be in jeopardy with ultimately reduced options to the south.
The next Cross-party Group on Aviation, which is driven by the SPAA and led by our Secretary Janice Hogarth, is due
to be held at the Scottish Parliament
at Holyrood on 20th September and we will continue to raise and voice the ongoing issues of the day for the travel trade here in Scotland.
We are currently compiling a report along with other members of the group
THE VOICE OF TRAVEL IN SCOTLAND
including airports, airlines and trade organisations which will be presented to MSPs at Holyrood.
Our annual golf day was held in Lanark and proved to be a fantastic event with great prizes and good fun on the day. I was lucky enough to play in the same four ball as the eventual individual prize winner, Alex Catton and it was a real joy to see some magnificent shots from him, Danny Giles and Graham Hennessy. If you did not manage
to attend this year, then I would thoroughly recommend putting it in the diary for next year now as it was a great networking opportunity for all.
By the time you read this we will have had the first ever Sparkle awards where we recognise individuals and the contribution of frontline counter staff and show our appreciation for all their hard work and endurance of what has been some unprecedented times. More to follow on the winners and photographs from on the day which will be circulated on our SPAA bulletins.
May I also take this opportunity to remind you that we will have launched the voting for our main awards ceremony in November which is always a highlight and a great night out with all our industry colleagues and an opportunity to show our appreciation for all our associates and key suppliers so please remember to vote.
Take care and stay safe.

Where’s William?
I’m delighted that Scenic & Emerald Cruises are about to resume sailing on the Mekong in Southeast Asia again from October 2022 and thought it would be a great opportunity to update you all on this wonderful region.
I had the pleasure of visiting Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta back in 2018 and am very much looking forward to hosting a FAM trip on board the luxurious Emerald Harmony on the Mekong in October this year.
Scenic & Emerald Cruises ships in Southeast Asia are built to European safety regulations, which is not always the case on the Mekong and so provides that extra feeling of safety when your guests travel with us.
We have Scenic Spirit cruising the Mekong, catering for just 68 guests and suites feature separate living and sleeping areas plus your own balcony to take in those amazing views. We offer an incredible included, exclusive Scenic Enrich experience: a mystical themed Gala Dinner at Prasat Kravan, a small 10th century temple in the city of Angkor, the former capital of the Khmer empire in the early 12th century, which includes a three-course meal of traditional Khmer cuisine with free-flowing drinks and a magical performance with Apsara dancers. Also, the fantastic Ho Chi Minh Vespa and food tour is a classic and you can see me heading off on this adventure in the photo – a true cuisine delight.
Unlike other similar sized ships, we have specifically designed Emerald Harmony to sail into the centre of Ho Chi Minh City, allowing us to dock in the heart of this fantastic city. Emerald Harmony caters for just 84 guests in chic, modern sanctuaries fusing authentic Asian style with contemporary design with all the amenities you would expect from a world class hotel. Amazing cuisine awaits with breakfasts, lunches, as well as five-course a la carte dining in the evening.
Don’t forget, we also travel beyond the Mekong if your guests would like to see Hanoi and beautiful Halong Bay along with Da Nang and Hoi An to make it an experience of a lifetime. Our 2023/24 Southeast Asia river cruises are on sale now.

MSC VIRTUOSA TO SAIL YEAR-ROUND FROM SOUTHAMPTON
MSC Cruises has announced that MSC Virtuosa will offer year-round cruises from Southampton for winter 2022/23 and summer 2023.
This will be the first time that the line has continuously operated one of its vessels from the UK year-round.
Antonio Paradiso, Managing Director – UK and Ireland, MSC Cruises, comments: “Since MSC Virtuosa first came to the UK, the feedback from our guests has been incredible and the ships have been a huge hit. The increased appetite for stress-free no-fly cruises out of the UK combined with the benefits of the new state-of- the-art Horizon Terminal has resulted in huge demand.
“The continued deployment of one of our newest and most innovative ships out of the UK is just further proof of the continued importance of the UK market, which began with our first
full ex-UK season back in 2018. Since then, we have gone from strength to strength and we are committed to offering the best possible experience for our guests from the UK
and Ireland.”
MSC Virtuosa will now replace MSC Preziosa’s itineraries this winter offering the newly introduced ‘Northern Pearls’ itinerary from Southampton to Hamburg for Berlin in Germany; Zeebrugge for Bruges and Brussels in Belgium; Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Le Havre for Paris in France.
“MSC Virtuosa’s deployment for winter will see us increase our capacity for the season and will provide an even more attractive offering for our guests looking for a winter break without having to take a flight.”
In summer 2023, MSC Virtuosa will replace MSC Grandiosa offering a range of itineraries from mini cruises, 7-night sailings through to longer cruises. Further details of the full programme will be released soon.

Read the latest news from Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
Hi again everyone!
I can’t believe that we’re nearing the end of the summer months already... where is time going?
Looking back, it’s been such an exciting season for Rosyth, with Balmoral having taken guests to the rugged shores of Iceland and sailed the scenic waterways of France. But as one door closes, another always opens and while Rosyth’s season is now finishing, I’m already excited for next year’s sailings from Scotland. In 2023, there’ll be chances to discover the traditions of Spain and Portugal, join ORCA’s Cruise Conservationists for a trip to witness the midnight sun in Spitsbergen or, of course, experience the summertime Norwegian fjords in just five nights.
For guests looking to get away a little sooner, there are some fabulous sailings from Liverpool this autumn and winter, including going in search of the Northern Lights in November with a chance to get a taste of life for the native Sami community in Alta, or enjoying some festive winter warmth by spending Christmas in the Canaries.
And on the other side of the festive season, I’m incredibly excited for early next year, when Balmoral will be setting sail on an incredible 78-night exploration of South America and for the first time ever in Fred. Olsen’s history - the Antarctic! It will be such an incredible journey and to have the war veteran Simon Weston on board for the Falklands leg of the journey will be a fantastic experience for our guests.
Those looking for shorter journeys can enjoy wonderful hand- crafted itineraries, with two new journeys going in search of the Northern Lights from Newcastle in March on board one
of our newest ships Bolette, with her faster cruising speeds allowing us to offer guests this adventure in just 9-nights!
Plus, we’re offering guests free drinks or door-to-door transfers included on selected 2023 sailings if booked before 31st October. You can find all the details on this over on our Travel Agent Centre.
Until next time folks – take care and happy selling!

AER LINGUS SPONSORS COLLEGE FOOTBALL CLASSIC
As Aer Lingus celebrated the touchdown
of its sponsored College Football Classic - cheerleaders from North Western University performed upon arrival in Dublin to help mark the start of the Big Ten Conference fixture.
The Northwestern University Wildcats played against the Nebraska University Cornhuskers in Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on 27th August 2022, marking the opening of the 2022 college football season. The two teams flew with Aer Lingus - title sponsor of the event - and the event kicked off a series of college football games to be hosted by Dublin over the coming years.
The fixture looks set to have a major impact on travel and tourism and the wider economy in Ireland, as thousands of fans of both US colleges are expected to travel to Ireland to cheer on the two teams.
The game represents the biggest inbound inter- national event in Ireland since 2019, with 13,000 US fans and 3,000 European fans arriving in Dublin to be part of the big game, which is worth an estimated €63 million to the Irish economy.

BELFAST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT DISPLAYS ‘WILLOW THRONE’
Tourists arriving into Northern Ireland via Belfast International Airport will be greeted by the world- famous Willow Throne, from the Game of Thrones Studio Tour.
The Willow Throne was created by expert weaver Bob Johnston for the Game of Thrones Season 8 premiere in Belfast before residing in The Ulster Museum, which has donated the signature piece to the airport. Built 30% bigger than the actual Iron Throne from the hit HBO TV series, the Willow Throne will invite fans to experience the new Game of Thrones Studio Tour at Linen Mill Studios in Banbridge.
The Studio Tour, which opened earlier this year, feature authentic sets including Winterfell, Dragonstone and Kings Landing, costumes and props from the show. The TV series was primarily filmed at Linen Mill Studios in Banbridge, where Game of Thrones Studio Tour is located.
Naomi Waite, Director of Marketing at Tourism Northern Ireland, said: “The Willow Throne display is a fantastic opportunity to give visitors from near and far a giant welcome to the land of Game of Thrones.
“Data from OAG paints a positive picture of a bounce back in access to Northern Ireland this summer, with air seat capacity to Northern Ireland expected to be at 89% of the level seen
in the same period in 2019. As consumer sentiment shows a strong pent-up demand to travel, we look forward to seeing the smiles and sharing the social media posts from visitors coming through Belfast International Airport.”

This autumn, visitors to Vancouver can enjoy a number of exhibitions and art galleries.
For the very first time, National Geographic’s 'Beyond King Tut: The Immersive Experience' will take over the Vancouver Convention Centre from 27th October to 8th January, 2023.
This unique exhibition celebrates the 100-year anniversary of the discovery of King Tut’s tomb and connects the journey to modern-day Egypt through nine distinct galleries, including a narrated VR Experience of the tomb.
Another Vancouver gallery to experience is The Contemporary Art Gallery. Awarded an AIBC Architectural Award of Excellence, Lieutenant Governor Medal in 2002, the building is centrally located in downtown Vancouver and offers curatorial tours, open studio times with varying artists, discussions and workshops.
Located in the historic Gastown neighbourhood, The Coastal Peoples Fine Arts Gallery curates authentic local First Nations art. Visitors can discover the art and diversity of Canada’s First Nations, Plains and Inuit peoples and the gallery also supports the artists’ families and communities while helping to keep their culture alive.
In addition The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art houses the Simon Fraser University Bill Reid Collection and a variety of exhibitions of contemporary Indigenous Art of the Northwest Coast of North America.
True to Place: stímetstexw tel xéltel is the latest exhibit

Four artists are featured using innovative beadwork ‘to express feelings of nostalgia and connections to their
own experiences’.

INVICTUS GAMES TO BE HELD IN CANADA
Vancouver and Whistler are celebrating the success of their bid to host the Invictus Games in 2025.
Canada is the first country to have proposed an innovative hybrid model for the Invictus Games. Vancouver and Whistler’s successful bid means these Games will be the first to incorporate winter adaptive sports, in addition to some of the core sports from previous Invictus Games.
“Adding snow and ice sports to the mix in Vancouver and Whistler will be transformative for the Invictus Games, making them more diverse than ever. These new fields of play will introduce us to athletes who have never before competed at an Invictus Games,” said Royce Chwin, President and CEO of Destination Vancouver.
“The Invictus Games honours athletes who stepped forward to serve their countries and who were transformed by their experiences,” he continued. “Competing in our legacy venues against the iconic backdrops of Vancouver and Whistler will be a spectacular showcase for their achievements.”
True Patriot Love is partnering with the Government of Canada, the Government of British Columbia and First Nations in Vancouver and Whistler to ensure the Invictus Games 2025 will be the most innovative and accessible Games held to date.

Once turbulent staging point for gold prospectors hell-bent on geing to the Klondike, you can now stroll weathered boardwalks and drop in at old- time saloons at Skagway.

RIVIERA RIVER CRUISES – THE MOST RELAXING WAY FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS TO EXPLORE EUROPE IN 2023
If your customer is contem- plating a river cruise, Riviera’s wonderfully crafted and bal- anced itineraries provide all the inspiration they’ll need for a superb holiday along Europe’s most iconic rivers.
From the mighty Danube to the gently meandering Moselle, romantic twists and turns of the Seine or dramatic Douro Valley - they’ll
wake up somewhere new each day and explore fascinating cities and picturesque towns with expert local guides who’ll bring each destination to life and enjoy time at leisure to go at their own pace too.
Wonderfully light
and spacious cabins
On Riviera’s five-star ships, no matter which cabin type or deck you book, we have no inside cabins and every single one has a window – in fact those on higher decks have full length floor to ceiling sliding glass doors to maximise the natural light as well as the exceptional views.
Our cabins are some of the largest you’ll find on any European river cruise ships, sumptuously furnished and with gleaming ensuite
facilities. They’ll be blown away by the elegance and space of the public areas too, with beautiful
lighting, panoramic windows plus
a sensational sun deck to relax and take in the views. There’s superb facilities to enjoy too such as a whirlpool, salon and spa. With all the style and glamour of a larger cruise ship but all the personal service of a much more exclusive vessel, it really is no understatement to compare our ships to floating boutique hotels.
Costs less than you think
With all meals included, plus afternoon tea and complimentary tea, coffee and water always available, plus a fascinating visit or guided tour with a knowledgeable local expert each day, our river cruises cost less than you all think.
And Riviera now also offers the useful option to purchase on-board credit before travel available in denominations of €50.
Convenient Drinks Package
This pre-paid option could be perfect for your customers who intend on spending lots of time ashore and just plan to purchase drinks with
meals only.
They’ll enjoy a selection of drinks in the restaurant served during lunch and dinner - from a range of draught and non-alcoholic beers, soft
drinks, juices and thoughtful wine recommendations - all by the glass.
Push the boat out
with Riviera Plus
When your customers upgrade to
an upper deck cabin or any of the superior or deluxe suites, they’ll
also enjoy Riviera Plus - a range of extra special touches to enhance their stay on board and ashore: a chilled bottle of sparkling wine and luxurious L’Occitane en Provence toiletries, a smart handset, plus unlimited calls, text messages and internet usage - both whilst relaxing on board and ashore. There’ll be a fresh seasonal fruit platter to enjoy in their cabin and every evening, they’ll be served an aperitif in the convivial bar before dinner.
If all this wasn’t enough, we’ve got some great offers to tempt your customers to give river cruising a try in 2023 with 50% off cabin upgrades on selected cruises and we’ve added hundreds of no single supplement cabins across our inspirational collection of European river
cruises too!
At Riviera we want to do all we can to ensure you are maximising sales and we’ve recently expanded our Agency Sales team to fully support you with whatever assistance you need.

a destination.
Azamara’s fleet of four intimate-style ships dock in smaller, marquee ports, giving you unique access to hidden gems around the world. With more Country-IntensiveSM itineraries and land programmes to choose from, you’ll find yourself completely immersed in everything the destination has to offer.
The newest member of Azamara’s four-ship fleet, Azamara OnwardSM, launched this past May featuring exciting new itineraries and onboard venues.
The new sister ship is home to the exclusive Atlas Bar, a speciality venue featuring innovative artisanal cocktails created using the latest techniques from smoking domes to
nitro-infusions, with fresh squeezed juices and handmade syrups to create flavours inspired by destinations across the globe. You can sip on a London Fog Martini, a Tuscan Delight, or the Heart of Azamara while dining on an exotic premium menu of small plates served hot and cold.
Also exclusive to Azamara Onward is a new Chef’s Table concept at speciality restaurant, Aqualina, where you can enjoy a seven-course culinary journey of beautifully presented dishes that capture the flavour and essence
of some of the destination’s most authentic dishes. For entertainment, Azamara has debuted four brand-new Signature Shows on Azamara Onward to keep you grooving all night long to a wide variety of music styles.
Azamara Onward’s inaugural season will explore the Mediterranean and in 2024, the ship will set sail for a new 155-night World Voyage. The once-in- a-lifetime World Voyage will visit over 40 countries in 6 continents with 22 overnight stays and 27 late nights in port, giving you ample time to fully explore the rich culture and history of each destination.
This journey will include immersive experiences in the World’s Wonders, giving you such options as a three- night land excursion in Beijing with
a visit to the Great Wall of China and
a guided tour through the Forbidden City, or a shore excursion to Cairo, Egypt, where an Egyptologist will guide you through the Great Pyramids to the mysterious Sphinx, among others.
In addition, Azamara has recently launched its Europe 2024 deployment, with a choice of 84 new sailings visiting ports only accessible to smaller vessels, such as Norway’s unspoiled Trollfjorden and Germany’s Kiel Canal. Azamara has added over 10 new ports in 2024, including Ceuta, Spain, on
the coastline of Morocco, where you can walk alongside the medieval City Walls or enjoy its astounding beaches. Another is Porto Santo Stefano, Italy, famous for its seafood restaurants and Spanish fortress.

AIR ASTANA GROUP LOOKS
TO LONG-TERM GROWTH
Air Astana Group has reported strong passenger growth in 2022, with 3.9 million passengers carried during the first seven months of the year, representing a 9% increase over the same period in 2021.
The network has continued to expand with the resumption of flights to destinations including London and Istanbul, together with the launch of new services to Greece. In the coming months, frequencies to Dubai, Delhi and Phuket will be significantly increased and services to Bangkok
will be resumed, which represents a significant step in rebuilding the Asian network.
This year, the airline will take delivery of two more Airbus A321LR aircraft, bringing the total to 10, whilst the LCC division, FlyArystan will add three more Airbus A320neo aircraft, bringing the total fleet up to four. Air Astana Group added 13 new aircraft between mid-2020 and March 2022, with a further 24 aircraft due to join the fleet by mid 2025.
“Air Astana has rapidly recovered despite an unprecedented series of operational challenges this year, with passenger traffic up 9% and seat capacity up marginally between January and July compared to the same period last year,” said Peter Foster, President and CEO of Air Astana Group.
At Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, it’s ‘all about the people.’
We believe that there are certain things that can only happen when people put genuine care and positivity into what they do, and with her passion for The Olsen Way and dedication in supporting you, as travel agents in Scotland, Allison Graham truly reflects this value.
This extends to our on board experience. As a family-run cruise line, we take your customers experience personally. With less guests on board, our service is personal and the atmosphere is warm and civilised. What’s more, we offer departures from convenient regional departure ports, including Rosyth.
We’d love your support in voting us for Best Cruise Representative and Mainstream Cruise Line of the year.

WOMEN TRANSFORMING THE TOURISM INDUSTRY
Intimate Hotels of Barbados, a non-profit organisation, was established in 2000 to provide marketing and training services to locally owned small hotels and apartments on the island.
Since then the organisation has grown from less than twenty members to its current 41 member properties, with accommodation options ranging from four rooms up to a maximum of 79.
Led by three women among its four Executive Directors, it is interesting to note that 51 percent of the small indigenous hotel member properties are owned or managed by women. Executive Director, Davina Layne comments: “Having women owned and led businesses in an economy is critical. The diversity in the skills
of women, both technical and soft skills, cannot be understated. Women therefore need to contribute and be encouraged to be increasingly involved in leadership roles as they can add specific value.”
For clients who want to explore the island, the Intimate Hotels of Barbados offer a wide range of budget or affordable accommodation options, including All Seasons Resort in St. James; Best E Villas Barbados in St. James; Dover Beach Hotel in Christ Church and Infinity on the Beach at St. Lawrence Gap.
BARBADOS FOOD & RUM FESTIVAL RETURNS
The Barbados Food & Rum Festival is returning this year, with a special focus on the future culinary talent on the island, under the theme ‘Feed the Future’.
Known as the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean and, of course, the birthplace of rum, both food and drink are celebrated each year by the islanders.
This year’s Festival will take place 27th - 30th October 27th 2022, with part of the proceeds of the Festival going directly to funding two students’ culinary degrees at the Jean and Norma Holder Hospitality Institute
and Hotel PomMarine in Barbados. Additionally, part of the proceeds will go towards funding one PomMarine student to study abroad at an international
culinary institution.
A total of 29 award-winning local chefs and mixologists – including for the first time the addition of a vegan chef – will all be headlining the signature 2022
Festival events. Other highlights include the Rum Route St. Lawrence Gap Street Party - a street party with access to all restaurants and bars, featuring
local entertainment, a street parade and in-house performances on Friday, 28th October.
Visitors can also enjoy a wide range of foodie events and activities throughout the month of October, including ‘Dine Around Restaurant Series’. With over 400 restaurants, select venues will offer daily specials to showcase Bajan cuisine.
