KEY NEWS ON CLIMATE AND SUSTAINABILITY
Aviation is a growth sector supporting prosperity and international mobility. For the Lufthansa Group, this goes hand in hand with the responsibility to reduce the environmental impact of business activities to the unavoidable minimum, in the air and on the ground.
Modern aircraft significantly reduce emissions
An important measure in reducing the impact of travel for business is constant fleet renewal. Lufthansa Group
have a programme of fleet renewal until 2027 whereby new aircraft will emit up to one quarter (-25%) less CO2 than predecessors, or about 1.5million metric tons per year. The latest order for 40 state-of-the-art long-haul Airbus A350- 900 and Boeing 787-9 aircraft with an investment volume of 12 billion US dollars (list prices) supports these ambitions.
Less CO2 emission by aircraft renewal
The success of continuous fleet renewal can be measured. The airlines of the Lufthansa Group have not only increased fuel efficiency by 30% since 1994, they have also set a new efficiency record in 2018; on average the passenger airlines only used 3.65 litres of kerosene to fly a passenger 100 kilometres. That is an improvement of 0.8% and the lowest figure in the history of the company so far.
Creating a market for alternative fuels
Synthetically-produced fuels are the only real alternative for completely neutralising emissions in aviation. In 2019 Lufthansa and Refinery Heide signed a joint declaration of intent concerning the future production and acceptance of synthetic kerosene that is to be produced with electricity generated by wind power.
From 2020 corporate customers will fly CO2 neutral with Lufthansa Group Corporate Value Fares
In 2020, the Lufthansa Group is launching an attractive range of climate-friendly business travel products. With the Lufthansa Group Corporate Value Fares, corporate customers can fly CO2-neutral on Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian Airlines flights in Europe. For the first time, carbon offsetting is automatically included in these fares for contracted customers.

Face to Face with...
anTOniO ParaDisO
MD for UK & Ireland MSC Cruises
What have been the principal reasons for MSC Cruises’ success in the last few years?
2019 was our most successful year to date in the UK. We have a vision and we have a dream. We are a family run business so whatever we do, we do with our hearts - we have never been a corporate company. We listen carefully to our travel agents and customers – our personal relationships are most important. Emails and SMS messages are all very well, but nothing beats face to face contact and the personal touch and we aim for this with each and every travel agent.
i believe one of our major strengths is that we listen – we act global,
but think local. There can be no coincidence that we are the fastest growing cruise line in the world with more than 16 new ships coming, including MSC Virtuosa later this year – more than any other cruise line. Our business has gone from strength to strength in Scotland, the north and ni and we can feel the love, support and enthusiasm from the trade. This means a great deal to me personally and i know it also does to our sales staff working with our trade partners every day.
You made a bold decision to remain in the Arabian Gulf market for 2019-20. Has this been worthwhile?
Every cruise line uses its own judgement. As far as we are concerned, it’s a safe area, we have deployed our newest ship
in the Arabian Gulf and it’s been very successful so far. it’s a great alternative to the Caribbean for winter sunshine with outstanding
and interesting ports of call that people seem to want to visit, so we may even consider extending the season. There are certainly plenty of opportunities ahead for this part of the world.
What are the biggest opportunities for travel agents who want to work with you?
starting with opportunities – i have 5.5m of them to share with our agents - which is the number of passengers we expect to be carrying world wide by 2026! This business plan shows our ambition for the brand.
in terms of destinations, especially from the north of the UK and northern ireland, the western Mediterranean and the Caribbean are proving to be the most popular. We have supported our agents with regional flight packages and have more ships in the Med than anyone else – it is our home after all.
We are investing heavily all around the world and have a brand new terminal in Miami and also recently opened one in Barcelona. Over the next year, we will be bringing more MsC Cruises’ ships to northern ireland and scotland so that agents can see and feel the product for themselves. We are a trade friendly business as it represents 99% of our revenue and will always want to work in partnership with our friends. We offer price parity and support agents with generous commissions and our regional sales managers offer plenty of great sales support.
i personally want to say a huge thank you to all the travel agents who have supported us - as you have made us the business that we are today.

the Seychelles
With a year-long warm tropical climate, any time of the year is a good time

Typically, the weather pattern brings light north- westerly trade winds from October to March with the brisker south-easterly trades from May to September, bringing cooler and windier conditions, ideal for sailing and water activities.

There are a number of events and festivals held throughout the year, including the ‘subios ‘suBios Underwater Festival’, which showcases Seychelles’ extraordinary underwater world through a series of film shows, talks and competitions, while the ‘Festival Kreol’ (a week-long celebration of Creole heritage and traditions) is held in October each year.
The Seychelles Sailing Cup, an international sailing event, is held in January and the international Fishing Competition in november.

FaM TriP reView
On board the Balmoral, with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines
FAM TRIP REVIEW
by STEPHANIE MACMILLAN, Scotland’s Cruise Centre
Our Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines trip was excellent from start to finish. On embarkation, any preconceived ideas we had about Fred. Olsen were blown away. it’s easy to see why so many customers choose to return time and time again.
ACCOMMODATION
We were given Superior Oceanview cabins and they couldn’t be faulted; the bathrooms were spacious, there was plenty of space in the wardrobe and an unexpected extra was one of the comfiest beds ever!
ON BOARD
Fred. Olsen is renowned for its service, however, i don’t think any of us were aware just how good the service really is. Our steward was so attentive and nothing was too much trouble for her or the rest of the staff - they were always extremely warm and friendly. From the restaurants to the bars, the service was impeccable.
The ship had a lovely atmosphere - the public rooms were welcoming and homely - it was all so relaxing.
Whether you are looking for a place to read a book or a chic area to sip a pre-dinner cocktail, the Balmoral has it covered. Our favourite part of the ship was on the top deck, The Marquee Bar. We sampled the utterly delicious cocktails while planning our days and evenings ahead.
Another strikingly impressive facility was the Atlantic Spa on deck 10, both serene and
tranquil, offering a wide range
of treatments. However, the
very best thing about this marvellous ship was the food. it was incredible! The main dining experiences, whether buffet or a-la-carte, were delicious and we couldn’t stop raving about it.
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, Fred. Olsen brings you their Speciality Dining options, which are well worth the small cover charge. The Poolside was exceptional - the destination themed cuisine set against the sunset backdrop was stunning and the grill offered the best meal many of us had ever tasted.
EXCURSIONS
the excursions on offer were wide ranging and the destinations were beautiful. From the friendly coasts of the orkney islands to the strikingly beautiful Shetlands, there was an abundance of history, culture and quirks to be discovered on these stunning islands.
With the opportunity to experience the riB’s offered by Fred. olsen, we can confirm there is no better way to discover the wildlife
and the beautiful and rugged coastlines.
Overall, our experience on
Fred. olsen was first class, full of surprises and completely wonderful! We will continue to confidently recommend them to our customers.

Newcastle International aims to reduce emissions
As airports across Europe announce their plans to become Net Zero Carbon before 2050, Newcastle International is aiming to become
a Net Zero emissions airport by 2035, its centenary year.
The airport plans to become more environmentally friendly over the next 15 years by generating renewable energy, shifting to new technologies and introducing a brand new fleet of passenger and car park electric vehicles across the airport, along with improved facilities for customers with electric vehicles.
As a member of Sustainable Aviation, which is made up of airlines, airports, aerospace manufacturers and air traffic service providers, working towards cleaner, quieter and smarter aviation, newcastle international is also planning to help stakeholders to reduce carbon emissions from flights by encouraging more use of the latest, most efficient aircraft such as the a320 neo – which already operates at the airport. the neo aircraft delivers a 15% saving in Co2 emissions.
nick Jones, Chief executive at newcastle international Airport, said: “Decarbonising the Airport before 2035 will be a challenge, but this is something that we feel strongly about.
“Newcastle International Airport is an extremely important asset to the region and we pride ourselves on being a good neighbour. The people of the North East are at the heart of everything we do, so it is vital that we make the changes needed to be able to grow the airport in a sustainable manner that protects the environment we all live and work in.”
in 2020, newcastle international airport will also seek to join the aCi europe airport Carbon accreditation scheme.
