More new routes
from loganair
Loganair has announced six routes to commence in 2020, including new destinations and additional connections.
The new services include Glasgow to Cardiff; Aberdeen to Haugesund and East Midlands; Aberdeen to Brussels via Newcastle; Newcastle to Bergen and a summer seasonal service from Newcastle to Guernsey.
The developments are the latest phase of the Scottish airline’s ‘Where next?’ programme, expanding its
route map both within the UK and across northern
and mainland Europe; introducing 19 routes since the beginning of 2019 and now ranking as the UK’s 5th largest airline by number of flights operated.
All of the services will be operated by Embraer 145 or 135 jets, part of Loganair’s overall fleet of 45 aircraft.

The greatest impact of the hurricane is being felt in the northern most islands of Abacos and Grand Bahama and our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have lost loved ones, their homes and belongings.

The Voice of Travel in Scotland
REFLECTING ON THE SPAA
Normally in these articles, I talk about various aspects of what is happening on the travel front. However, sometimes it is worth reflecting on the current work of the SPAA.
Traditionally, the 12 member SPAA Council meets every month to discuss
a range of subjects pertinent to the Scottish travel trade and beyond. Whilst commercial activities are not part of the Council remit, the health of suppliers, whether airlines, cruise companies, tour operators, rail operators and the like, is a vital part of our work.
The recent issues over Superbreak, Thomas Cook and the BA troubles are always on the agenda. However, whilst the majority of the monthly agendas may be somewhat more mundane, they nonetheless underpin the reason why the SPAA has been such a vital part of the Scottish travel industry for nearly 100 years.
Our continuity is built on the commitment by the Council members who give freely of their time, the members who realise the benefits of belonging to a unique organisation,
in addition to the associate suppliers whose long term support is critical to our success.
Of course, nowadays, our work is wider and more varied than it has been in
the past, especially as social media, technology and the political as well as the environmental climate takes centre stage in our lives.
PR is an important part of getting our members’ message across especially
to potential customers, which is not something we have promoted too much in the past.
However, we are increasingly called upon to ensure that the value of using a travel agent is not lost on the travelling public.
Recent events with Superbreak, BA’s troubles, strikes and the weather offer many opportunities for pushing that message home. The value of intermediaries these days, whatever commodity is being sold, is always questioned, but we can find many opportunities for extolling the virtues of the local travel agent.
Also, in the political arena, it makes
sense that the SPAA is seen to have an opinion on areas of importance regarding travel and its infrastructure. We have engaged fully with both Holyrood and Westminster and will do so again in October (or maybe November depending on who will be in power to talk to!) with a cross party discussion.
We are also represented on three airport consultative committees - Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, plus the Association of ATOL Companies in addition to IATA’s Air Passenger Joint Council whilst working closely with ABTA, the Business Travel Association and the CAA.
With the issues that now face us, it is important that the SPAA has a voice in various arenas to ensure that travel is considered safe, secure and the consumer is protected as much as possible.
Our air convenor, Mike Tibbert, liaises with many of our airline partners, as does Kennedy Cree as SPAA cruise convenor with our associates who operate on
the high seas and rivers. Jimmy Martin protects our interests in the tour operator sphere, Alan Glen represents the SPAA on IATA business, along with myself, whilst Sandy McPherson’s long term activity with Holyrood keeps our ear to the ground on all things political.
It’s not all about the serious side of things. Joanne Dooey along with Secretary Janice Hogarth are the driving force behind our big social events of the year.
The Summer Ball in June and the SPAA Awards in November and of course, along with the direction of Dinner Convenor Aman Kohli, the renowned SPAA February Dinner.
Janice also organises our three STAR events in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh in addition to a number of Network and Face to Face lunches which take place throughout the country
and Douglas Morrison supervises and produces the popular SPAA Quiz nights. In all we have 27 annual events, including council meetings, so there is a lot to be organised.
Neither do we forget our obligation to our chosen charities and Irene Darracott ensures our annual donations are substantial. All these convenors are ably supported by the remaining council members, Gayle Gordon, Paul Cronje and Maggie Rae.
However, we always need new blood on the SPAA Council and we’ve been lucky enough to welcome new members over the last couple of years. So, if you are interested in joining the SPAA Council please speak to one of those members who are named in this column.
It continues to be an exciting time in the travel industry and serving on the SPAA Council is personally rewarding, but more importantly, beneficial for all involved in the Scottish travel industry.

JUSTiN ArEST
Managing Partner, Co-Owner of the new Kixby hotel in New York City.
As managing partner and co-owner of the new Kixby hotel in Manhattan’s Herald Square, Justin combines a genuine love of hospitality with broad experience and deep knowledge of the industry.
Through his decades-long career, Justin has worked in every role in hospitality, from engineering to housekeeping to sales: creating a perfect guest experience, he believes, starts with understanding every facet of the business. After studying finance and international business at NYC’s Stern School of Business, Arest earned his law degree from George Washington University Law School. In 2006, he joined the family business, overseeing its real-estate portfolio which includes the Kixby.
History of the hotel...
There is definitely some truth to the adage that ‘they don’t build them
like they used to.’ The Kixby, a newly minted luxury boutique hotel opening this autumn, reclaims the stunning
1901 Beaux-Arts building that housed legendary luxury hotel, the Collingwood a century ago. After the current owners purchased the property and completed a full renovation, the hotel was reopened as Hotel Metro in 1995.
Highlights...
The rebranding of the property will be the final touch to a multi-million dollar year- long renovation of the hotel. Previous guests of the Metro will be delighted to find the same team is responsible for
this ‘rebirth’ and promises all of the same attention to service and detail in a new and elevated experience. In addition to beautifully renovated bedrooms, new amenities include a Fitness room with Peloton equipment, The Lookup - a rooftop bar that has amazing views of the Empire State Building, a Lobby Bar and a Black Tap Craft Burgers and Beer restaurant.
Reasons to stay...
Kixby’s location in Herald Square, the heart of midtown Manhattan, is around the corner from the Empire State Building, a two minute walk to Macy’s and a 10 minute walk to Times Square. Eight subway lines and three bus routes stop at the corner, facilitating transportation to attractions around the entire city.
Justin’s ultimate hotel room...
When Justin travels, his priorities are value, comfort and convenience. No one wants to travel for business or leisure to find out a property does not at least meet his or her expectations. He prefers to stay in locations that are not too crowded but, at the same time, are in close proximity to the action.
Finally, it is usually not difficult to decipher whether a guest room is designed by a hotelier that travels or not. The latter often misses the little touches that can truly enhance a stay.
Just a few of such design elements include sufficient and properly placed outlets and USB ports, overhead lighting and placement of safes and refrigerators.
Attention to detail...
Justin finds that his favourite properties pay the best attention to detail. That starts with a well trained and experienced staff and continues right through to the design of the room.
It is also a conscious effort of a property to know its own brand and from first impression until after checkout, deliver at least what it has promised.
The newly renovated Lux floors feature bedrooms with 10 ft high ceilings, thoughtfully designed with custom made furniture, laptop safe, mini fridge, and bedside outlets with USB ports. Bathrooms of sparkling marble have oversized showers with rain shower heads, make-up mirrors and lighted vanity mirrors. Premier category rooms represent excellent value and
all rooms are equipped with in room safe, minifridge, marble bathrooms, hair dryers, an iron and ironing boards.

Must see NYC attraction - Hudson Yards
New attraction, the Hudson Yards has now opened in Manhattan, near 30th Street, just a short walk from Penn Station.
Built as a series of towers cantilevered over railway yards, the development includes attractions, restaurants, galleries and shops. One of the most striking features is the Vessel, a 150-foot tall honeycomb-like structure, with 154 staircases and 80 viewing platforms.
A new arts centre has been designed on wheels so that it can expand to accommodate performances and the development also includes a seven-floor shopping complex featuring designer labels such as Cartier and Rolex, Coach, H&M and the New York City debut of Neiman Marcus. Forty Five Ten, known for carrying established and up-and- coming brands, will open its second- largest American store here, selling womenswear, menswear, housewares, accessories and a vintage collection.
Visitors should also head up to the 100th-floor outdoor observation deck, which will provide breathtaking views upon
its completion in 2020. Not only will it be the highest publicly accessible outdoor deck in the City, but it will also be the highest in the Western Hemisphere.
Located on the south-facing side of 30 Hudson Yards, the deck
will jut out from the building enabling views down the length
of Manhattan as well as east to Brooklyn and Queens and west
to New Jersey. The 9-foot glass walls are also angled, allowing visitors to lean out for an even better view and also has a glass floor for views below. A restaurant is also set to open one floor up, with floor to ceiling windows which will offer more spectacular views.
Visitors will also be able to explore the final section of the High Line which starts some 20 blocks south of Hudson Yards and splits at 30th Street offering the opportunity to walk toward the Hudson River instead of alongside it. Back at 30th Street, the High Line also connects with the gardens and the plaza around the Vessel.
Catch a birdie at the wynn
This October, Wynn Las Vegas will reopen the Wynn Golf Club.
The new 18-hole championship golf course has been redesigned by golf icon and course designer Tom Fazio, assisted by his son Logan. From the first tee, through to the 18th hole, he has implemented significant elevation changes set against water features and mature trees that are unique to desert golf.
The only course connected to a resort on the Las Vegas Strip, the new Wynn Golf Club sits on the historic site of the Desert Inn Golf Club, a legendary venue for celebrity and pro tour golf dating back to the 1950s.

Fly Icelandair to New York with an Icelandic Stopover Adventure
New York: if you haven’t been yet, you need to go.
The sooner the better. This big, buzzing city will leave you dizzy with its sheer energy and diversity. New York doesn’t just have everything, it is everything, all at once and in your face.
Icelandair offers flights to New York and Newark from the UK and Ireland for year-round enjoyment. Whether for business or pleasure, New York is a city to dive into head first.
You may find yourself wondering: how can a foreign city feel so familiar? We hear you. New York is a city that looms large in creative dreams and on screens big and small. It’s been a muse for so many artists, writers, movie-makers and musicians: Sinatra serenaded it, Jay-Z praised it, Scorsese filmed it.
On your visit, get up-close to the homegrown culture: take in a baseball game, see a Broadway smash, visit a museum heavyweight like the Guggenheim
or the Met. Iconic landmarks beckon from all directions: Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square. Have you heard the expression ‘the city that never sleeps’? You won’t sleep much either, if you want to see even half of what’s on offer.
Be sure to savour the city’s smorgasbord. We can’t decide which is the most quintessential New York food experience: is it grabbing a pretzel or hot dog from a street cart? Ordering a burger and milkshake at an old-fashioned diner? Scoring a reservation at the latest hot spot where part of the fun is to see and be seen? Dressing up and drooling over the fancy creations of an A-list celebrity chef? Let your taste buds be the judge - and let your geographical wanderings dictate your dinner: dim sum in Chinatown, soul food in Harlem, craft beers and burgers in Brooklyn. Come hungry!
Before you take in the bright lights of the Big Apple, how about viewing the northern lights and exploring a tiny but cool capital? When you book flights to New York and Newark with Icelandair, you can easily add a Stopover in Iceland at no additional airfare.

TWO CITIES THAT NEVER SLEEP...
FLY DIRECT WITH
THE
SECRET SUCCESS
STUART LEE
The Mainstreet Travel Group
OF MY
As a schoolboy I always had a fascination with aviation and travel. I knew I was going to work in the sector in some capacity, but looking back, I never knew my career was going to be so diverse.
On leaving school I attended
New College Durham to study a HND in Travel and Tourism. After successfully completing my course, it was time to find a job.
My first job in the industry was as cabin crew for KLM UK. I was based in Manchester for the first two years and whilst the job was great,
I was envious of the pilots and often daydreamed that it would be me sitting there one day flying a commercial airliner. Every flight I spent any spare time I had in the cockpit, watching how these guys operated. My mind was made up - I was going to be a pilot!
With the help of my parents, I took unpaid leave for two months and headed to Ormond Beach, Florida. Within two months, I had obtained my Private Pilots and my Multi Engine License - my dream was starting to become a reality.
Back in the UK, I managed to get a base transfer home to Newcastle and continued to fly for a further two years whilst studying for my Commercial Pilots Licence written exams. I left KLM in 2005 so I could pursue my pilot’s career. As you can imagine, flying is costly so I had to find a job to fund my studies.
I joined The Mainstreet Travel Group in 2005 as a reservations agent working for two of the nicest people you will ever meet - Jan & Dave Eddleston. I have looked up to them both since day one and they have inspired me to become the person I am today.
It was tough going back to a 9-5 office based job after flying all over Europe, but I thrived in the sales environment. Over the course of the next two years, I worked and studied hard and finally obtained my Commercial Pilot’s Licence! Pilot’s jobs were hard to come by so I continued to push myself at Mainstreet.
Over the next few years, I had a few interviews with airlines but Mainstreet had my heart.
Something about working for Dave and Jan and the team around me made me want to stay. In 2014, I was offered the Manager’s position at Mainstreet. Over the last five years, we have seen the company grow, mainly due to our social media channels. The number of agents using us has tripled and we are currently going from strength to strength.
The proudest moment of my career happened earlier this year this year when I was offered my Directorship with Mainstreet. I cannot thank Dave and Jan enough for the faith and guidance they have shown me over the years.
So the secrets to my success? Dream big, work hard, surround yourself with great colleagues and remember - you are always learning - you will never know everything!

Valletta.
More than we could ever tell.
Malta’s capital city has been named the Sunniest City in Europe; city breakers couldn’t choose a more ideal winter sun getaway than English-speaking Valletta.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world; there are over 320 historical monuments to be found in Valletta alone. Travellers can wander through elegant winding streets and explore the city at their own pace.
The city boasts stunning boutique hotels; perfect for visitors wanting to stay in luxurious accommodation with a quirky edge. City breakers can enjoy waterfront alfresco dining overlooking the Grand Harbour whilst tasting an array of sea-food caught from the
Mediterranean Sea accompanied by a glass of Maltese wine.
Valletta is a must for a weekend getaway and is just a short three- hour flight away from Northern England and a four-hour flight away from Aberdeen and Belfast. The Maltese Islands are home to a number of fascinating cities; Valletta, Mdina, The Three Cities and Victoria. The towns are positively fairy tale like, with winding honey-coloured streets leading to palaces, cathedrals and other breath-taking historic monuments.
Valletta is a masterpiece of the Baroque, a European Art City and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Malta’s capital is one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world; just 80 hectares in size, the
city’s 320 historic monuments can be discovered completely on foot.
The origins of Mdina, Malta’s medieval capital, can be traced back more than 4,000 years. The history of Mdina and its suburb Rabat is as old and as chequered as the history of Malta itself. It’s still home to Malta’s noble families and impressive palaces line its winding streets. Mdina is often referred to as the ‘Silent City’ as no cars are allowed to pass through its gates.
The Three Cities is the collective name of the three fortified cities of Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua in Malta. The picturesque narrow streets are perfect for absorbing some of the local atmosphere and traditions.
Victoria, known to the Maltese as Rabat, is Gozo’s capital city. The city was named in 1887 to honour Queen Victoria during her Jubilee year. The walled city sits in the centre of the island and boasts interesting museums, cathedrals and most famously; the Citadella.
Just a short three-hour flight away from Northern England and a four-hour flight away from Aberdeen and Belfast, the Mediterranean archipelago calls to city breakers of all ages.

GO WILD FOR
CANADA’S WILDLIFE
Are you on a quest to see Canadian wildlife? From grizzly bears to polar bears, Canada’s staggering wildlife is one of the highlights of a trip. Let’s go on a journey of discovery to find the very best places to spot these animals in their natural habitats. Just don’t forget your camera!
IN THE REALM OF THE POLAR BEAR
Polar bears are truly the king of the Arctic. These magnificent animals are the largest carnivore on the planet and can weigh
in at as much as 1,500lbs. To see one roaming free is the wildlife encounter to end all wildlife encounters. And there
are few places better for it than Canada’s Churchill.
During the brief Arctic summer, polar bears leave the melted sea ice, venturing in to hunt along the shores of Hudson Bay. Take to the water in a small boat to be in with a chance of seeing polar bears lounging on the remote, rocky coastline. If you want to get heart-poundingly close, head for the Leatherdale International Polar Bear Conservation Centre in Winnipeg.
IN SEARCH OF THE BELUGA WHALE
With their pure white skin, these friendly marine mammals are one of Canada’s rarest animals. Yet head up to the mouth of the Churchill River during the summer months and you’ll find a gathering of thousands of beluga whales. In the chilly waters of the Hudson Bay, they come to feed, mate and give birth and you can see them glowing white just beneath
the surface.
In eastern Canada, just north of Quebec, the Saguenay Fjord is one of the southern- most haunts of the beluga whale and you can see them in the deep, dark waters year-round. Beluga whales are sociable, and are often referred to as ‘sea canaries’ for the way they communicate in a series of clicks, squeals and whistles. When they poke their little round heads out of the water, it might also be the cutest thing you’ll ever see.
IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF GRIZZLIES
The adrenaline rush of seeing a grizzly bear is comparable to few other wildlife experiences. Whether they’re splashing into shallow waters, napping in the sun or padding through the landscape like the monarchs they are, it’s something you won’t forget in a hurry.
It’s easy to understand why healthy numbers of grizzly bears want to call Banff and Jasper national parks home. Amid the snow-capped peaks, crystal- clear lakes, sparkling streams and rugged canyons grizzlies go wild. With luck on your side, you might spot grizzly bears near the iridescent Lake Louise during the spring and summer months. However, for the best chance of a sighting embark on a river safari through the aptly named Grizzly Bear Valley on the Blue River on the way to Sun Peaks, British Columbia.

Explore the shores of lake Ontario
One of five North American Great Lakes, Lake Ontario is flanked on the southeast by New York State and Toronto and Ontario on the west, with 712 miles of shoreline, including offshore islands. There are numerous parks, sandy beaches and restaurants with a view - all near urban Toronto.
Canada’s largest city also boasts one of the world’s longest urban waterfronts with nearly 30 miles of beaches, marinas and green spaces as well as art galleries, concert venues and a BMX bike park.
One must-see on the shores of Lake Ontario is the unusual Music Garden, a venue that’s home to free public concerts in summertime on Thursdays and Sundays. You can take a free guided tour from Harbourfront Centre or buy the self-guided audio tour and explore on your own.
Other highlights include the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre for large stadium-style, open air concerts as well as the intimate Echo Beach. Lunch at the 1922 Art Deco Sunnyside Café near the Martin Goodman Trail is also a great choice.
