Loganair Flight Review
- Glasgow/Barra/Glasgow Loganair DHC Twin Otter
By GARY REAVELY
The term ‘one of the world’s great travel experiences’ is a bit of a cliché and often the experience is too expensive to be out of reach for the average traveller.
However, there is one such experience right on our doorstep that can be bought for under £100pp! The iconic Loganair flight from Glasgow to the island of Barra is the only flight in the world that is scheduled to land on a beach and I recently got the chance to try the trip for myself.
CHECK-IN AND DEPARTURE
Loganair has its own dedicated check-in desks at Glasgow and we breezed through security. We then headed to the Sky Lounge where a traditional agent’s breakfast of beer and bacon rolls was partaken. A short stroll down to the gate and we found the Twin Otter aircraft waiting for us in its stunning blue and white colour scheme.
FLIGHT GLASGOW TO BARRA
The aircraft has a 1 - 2 seating configuration and as there are no cabin crew, the First Officer gives the passenger safety briefing. Due to the fact there is no fuel available in Barra, the Twin Otter carries enough fuel for the return trip thus for weight reasons can carry more passengers on the return than the outbound flight.
The aircraft pushes back from the stand using its own engines and following a short take off, we were airborne. The aircraft has an open flight deck so you can see all that is going on there as well. Due to the high wing of the Twin Otter, you get a great view of everything below including some of the beautiful islands en route to Barra. Flying time was just over an hour.
The approach and landing into Barra (there are 3 runways) was everything I expected it to be and more. We flew over stunning beaches that would not have been out of place in the Caribbean and finally we touched down on the runway - the aircraft throwing up lots of sea spray as it slowed down.
Once we disembarked, a lot of the passengers had clearly travelled just to experience the flight as there was much excitement (myself included) and lots of photos taken.
THE ISLAND OF BARRA
We were met by Eileen Frater, from Spirit of Barra Tours
(tel: 0798 3984488) who was to be our driver and guide for the day. She took us on an informative tour of the island including stops on several of the amazing beaches. The island is stunning with a culture, lifestyle and community spirit that you would be hard placed to find anywhere else. We had a great lunch in a community hall and met some of the local residents who could not have been more welcoming.
FLIGHT BARRA TO GLASGOW
Eileen took us back to the terminal at Barra which is quite unlike anything I have ever travelled through, with no departure security check and the flight is called personally by the gate agents. We walked across the beach and back onto the Twin Otter. En route to Glasgow there were some great sights, including a great view of Tobermory on Mull.
CONCLUSION
What an incredible travel experience. Loganair have offered this reliable connection to Barra residents for many years and have seen a big growth in tourists, who just want to experience the amazing flight as well as enjoy the island itself and it is easy to see why. The day trip would make an amazing giftft for someone special or why not stay for a few nights for a short break with a real difffference.

North East aims to drive tourism to the region
Newcastle International is hoping to increase the number of global visitors to the North East with the launch of a new inbound tourism website, showcasing the area’s best destinations and attractions.
The airport team has worked closely with the region’s tourism partners, including NewcastleGateshead Initiative, Visit County Durham, Northumberland Tourism, North and South Tyneside Councils, Tees Valley Combined Authority and Sunderland City Council.
The new website, Visit North East England, will be the only region-wide tourism website that encompasses all of the local authority areas with a detailed page for each area of the region, under the themes of ‘uncover’, ‘explore’ and ‘experience’. Future developments may include bookable product for many of the local tourism attractions, as well as interactive mapping of the region.
Jen Rea, the airport’s newly appointed Inbound Tourism Manager, said: “I am very passionate about promoting the North East, as I strongly believe that the inbound tourism project will be of great benefit to the whole of our region.
"Being from Newcastle myself, I have first-hand experience of how exciting and charming the region is – so I know that it will appeal to a wide range of different tourist demographics.”

Explore the Land of Fire & Ice with Super Break
Super Break has launched its 2020 programme of short breaks to North Iceland, featuring the only direct flights from the UK to Akureyri.
Offering three and four-nights ‘Incredible North Iceland’ packages, charter flights will operate on Mondays and Fridays from 3rd February to 9th March 2020, including departures from Isle of Man, Inverness, Durham Tees Valley and Newcastle. A self-drive package will also be available.
Gary Gillespie, head of Trade Sales at Super Break comments: “This will be our third year of offering unique short breaks to Akureyri and we’ve focused on regions of the UK where we know agents have the demand. We will look to add additional departures going forward as the need arises.
“Akureyri is located just 62km from the Arctic Circle and offers customers the chance to see fjords, glaciers, volcanoes, lava fields and natural springs. It really is a bucket list trip all with the convenience of flying from local airports direct to the destination."
The operator is also urging agents to use the popularity of Game of Thrones to drive sales. Gillespie continues: “We all know how TV locations can drive demand as customers want to go and see places for themselves. Our package includes an excursion to Lake Myvatn, which was used for filming locations for North of the Wall. The eighth and final season has just launched so I would encourage agents to use this in their marketing and promotional activity and capitalise on the huge following that this show has.”
Prices lead-in at £699pp for a three-night break.

Greetings Peeps!
Another whirlwind month full of exciting events to attend, people to meet and places to go.
This month started on a high, meeting with Princess Cruises new sales supremo and
Territory Manager for Scotland and Northern Ireland, Liam Hunt. I was ‘bear bowled over’ by his enthusiasm and passion for all things Princess. He told me about the great itineraries that they are featuring going forward and I was especially excited to hear about the new ground breaking Ocean Medallion technology - a wearable device that not only opens your stateroom door, but a world of possibilities aboard the ship. Sounds like a great idea to me!
Next up was an evening of Maltese delights hosted by the genial Peter Vella and Natalie Swinburne from Visit Malta. Peter gave a fantastic presentation, totally selling me on the island as an amazing place to visit for a short break or longer stay. There is so much to see and do from the culture and history of Valletta to beaches, festivals and events happening all year around. Did you know Malta has around 300 days of sunshine a year – why am I still living here I ask myself?
Choo Choo – all aboard the LNER express from Edinburgh to the Toon! Usually train platforms can make me nervous after what happened to my cousin Paddington, but I felt very safe in the company of Kelsey Tainsh in my first - class carriage (naturally!) ready for a day of Geordie hospitality at St James Park. As I settled back into my sumptuous leather seat and sipped on a cold beer, the superb on train staff fussed over me and attended to my every need.
A few days later I was back in the Toon for a fabulous ‘Palladium Nights’ experience hosted by the incredible high energy sales team featuring Nacho, Joanne, Chris and Katrin. They told me that their sales in the North are booming and it’s no wonder given their amazing products and the enthusiasm of the travel agents who had come from far and wide to attend the event. It was a Cuban themed evening and I was the bear in Havana shaking my maracas and sipping cocktails – what more could a bear ask for!
I then dusted off my anorak and headed to Glasgow Airport for the big event – the inaugural scheduled daily Emirates A380 flight from Dubai was landing and I was there to see it! What a sight – huge crowds gathered to see this beautiful Beast from the (Middle) East arrive as she gracefully glided in. Emirates, in partnership with GLA, have worked really hard to make this happen and rightly deserve all the acclaim.
Finally, I met up with the lovely ladies from Glenton Holidays. Over coffee with Joanne and Lyn, I heard about all the exciting opportunities they offer including solo holidays and cruising. Best of all was seeing Glen the Scotty dog – have to say, he’s not as handsome
as me, but then who is!
That’s all for now folks........

Lectures on the history or social affairs of the regions you are visiting will enhance your own discoveries and you’ll also enjoy culinary experiences while sailing, such as tasting local wines or a regional dish.
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is always available free of charge on a Viking ship. Each ship also has at least one computer terminal for your use.

You can choose to be sociable or find one of the delightful alcoves for a quiet read. There’s no need to pack formal clothing as the dress code is smart-casual. Perhaps most important of all, the amiable Viking staff take pride in ensuring your holiday is memorable through their exceptional service.
You’ll enjoy carefully prepared breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks every day of your cruise. Wine, beer and soft drinks are served with Viking’s compliments with lunch and dinner, so you can have a chilled beer with lunch and a couple of glasses of
red or white with dinner at no extra cost. Viking likes to bring on board the destinations in which you are travelling, so expect to find regional dishes on the menus as well as innovative recipes and favourites such as steak and salmon. Free tea and coffee are always available.
Excursions & experiences
Your Viking ship will usually dock at least once every day for you to explore ashore through a varied programme of included expert guided excursions. As well as visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, you can look forward to exclusive and insightful experiences, including home-hosted visits and cultural performances. A carefully chosen selection of optional trips is also available, such as notable wine tastings or a classical concert in a stunning venue.

Feeling anxious about flying - meet the Aberdeen Airport canine crew
New flights from TUI
The new TUI Airways flight to Rhodes recently took off from Aberdeen International Airport. The weekly service will operate throughout the summer season until 23rd September. TUI UK has also announced a new flight between Newcastle International Airport and Agadir, Morocco. Commencing May 2020, the new service will operate once a week on a Thursday.
ABTA’s research reveals holiday plans
New research from ABTA reveals that holidaymakers are planning to spend more on their holiday this year, with more than a quarter of people in Scotland most likely to spend more in 2019 and more than one in ten expecting to spend much more than they did in 2018.
The new research also looked at the spending habits of people across the country and found that Scots are firmly committed to their holidays. If they needed to cut back to save money, they would be more likely to reduce the amount they spent on eating out or on electronic gadgets, rather than miss out on a holiday.
The UK is the top destination of choice, while overseas, Europe is first on the list of places to visit. A city break
is preferred over any other type of trip – with over half planning to take one this year, followed by a beach holiday.
Aberdeen Airport and Therapet have teamed up to bring the first ever team of airport therapy dogs to the airport.
The Canine Crew, easily identifiable in their high vis jackets and bandanas, will mingle with passengers and staff both landside and airside throughout the terminal. Therapet in the Aberdeenshire area is managed by Canine Concern Scotland Trust and will deploy a team of dogs, of various sizes, with their handlers on a rota basis.
Aberdeen International Airport Duty Manager Fraser Bain said: “We’re excited to be the first airport in the UK to offer this service to passengers. As well as benefiting our visitors, we also recognise the benefit to the mental health and wellbeing of our staff.
“The Canine Crew is made up of a variety of dogs, with a mixture of brillant traits and personalities and we cannot wait to see the reaction of our passengers.”
