HUNGARTON & KEYHAM W.I.NEWS
JULY MEETING: The W.I. were invited together with husbands and partners to Nether Hall Keyham for our garden
meeting at the home of Elizabeth and Hugh Henderson. There was a coolness in the air with drizzling rain as we
entered Keyham, but it did clear.
We walked through the vegetable garden and into the paddock which is transforming into an interesting arboretum.
The first tree that drew my eye was a lovely specimen of a purple beech. A row of English oaks had been planted to
help shelter the chestnuts. The Turkish oak was not far away. We passed a fruiting medlar. Elizabeth pointed out the
Tulip tree (Davidia involucrata), one of my favourites, which much to her delight had flowered this year after taking so
long to do so. Also known as The Dove Tree, Ghost Tree and the Pocket- handkerchief Tree. A Parrotia persica was
also admired, sometimes known as Persian ironwood, a close relative of the witch hazel with just as striking flowers in
the spring. As we walked to the lower wetter slopes of the arboretum, the swamp cypress (Taxodium distichum), was
pointed out to us. One of Elizabeth’s newest plantings. It was doing well. Not far away on slightly higher ground was a
lovely specimen of a larch which Elizabeth had grown from a seed.
As we headed back to the beautiful wrought iron gates which led into the garden we admired the Betula Utilis
Jacquemontii with striking white trunk; these do look good in groups and to their left Elizabeth mentioned the Katsura
Tree (Cendiphyllium japonicum) a tree she said should smell of toffee and couldn’t smell at all but reading an article
from the Oxford Botanic Garden’s chemistry at the Garden Discovery Trail, the leaves have to be decaying in the
Autumn before this toffee scent is released.
Entering through the gates we could see the beautiful stone fountain. Commissioned especially for Fiona and Ben’s
wedding, August 2014. The couple’s initials and date of the wedding engraved for eternity, how romantic. Pheasants,
partridges and Queen Ann’s lace also carved into the stone.
The fountain and a rill running along the boundary of the garden and arboretum, had a natural water source. The rill
was created to stop the bamboo spreading and does seem to be working. Alongside the rill is a stumpery in the making
planted with hostas, an idea and inspiration after seeing the Highgrove stumpery.
Walking back to the conservatory, Elizabeth pointed out a cluster of Cardiocrinums a close relative of the lily, a
spectacular sight when in flower but taking a few years to do so.
A welcome picnic supper awaited and as usual an array in scrumptious variety. Good food and good company making
it a good end to the day.
Thank you Elizabeth and Hugh for inviting us to your lovely home, garden and arboretum.
