HISTORY
During the spring semester of 2000 on the campus of Florida A&M University,
a group of students led by William Johnson, a freshman Mechanical
Engineering major, and Darren Beneby, a junior criminal justice major, began
working on a Florida A&M Chapter of Progressive Black Men. The idea was
sparked by Johnson, who had the joined the Florida State Chapter.
In the fall of 2000, a group of interested gentlemen formed on the campus of
Florida A&M University. They began doing community service for March of
Dimes, Walk America, Sickle Cell Foundation, and the American Heart
Association. They also began fundraising by doing car washes, working at the
Career Fair, and holding raffles for the campus. They made their presence on
campus known by telling students and other organizations the purpose and the
goals of Progressive Black Men, Inc.
On October 21, 2000 the First Induction Class of the Florida A&M University
Chapter of Progressive Black Men, Inc. was inducted into the organization:
Xavier C. Allen, James R Barbour Jr., Hamilton H. Beach, Donald Belle,
Darren R. Beneby, Christopher G. Brown, Gregory Carroll, Antonio L.
Clements, Myron J. Daniels, Jarvis S. Ennis, Marcus Evans, Lamont Johnson,
William Johnson, Stanley C. Lee, Aderogba O. Makinde, Justin McDowell,
Rashad Morgan, Darryl Moses, Antonio L. Rainey, David L. Robinson, Eric
M. Roundtree, Lionel A. Taylor
During the spring 2001 semester, The Florida A&M Chapter of Progressive
Black Men, Inc. continued their community service efforts. They volunteered
for the March of Dimes, volunteered at Miracle Hill Retirement Home, and
started a mentoring group at Leon County High School.
Since then, the Florida A&M University Chapter of Progressive Black Men
has successfully inducted nineteen classes to continue on the legacy and efforts
of the organization.
PROGRESSIVE BLACK MEN
Dear Brothers,
In 1989, a group of students gathered in Smith Hall at Florida
State University and established Progressive Black Men. The idea
at the heart of PBM was simple. Young black men helping other
young black men complete a bachelor degree while serving the
community. The organization was successful. All the founding
members graduated. We also established the first ever Physical
Plant Appreciation Day and a Cub Scout Troop in Frenchtown.
FAMU was a part of PBM from the very beginning. Anthony
Weeks, a brother from FAMU, was among the earliest members.
It was an extraordinary honor to have young brothers embrace
the PBM way and establish the second chapter at FAMU, 15
years ago. FAMU PBM has inducted over 300 members. The first 5 National Presidents are members
of the FAMU chapter. The FAMU chapter has maintained strong mentoring programs since 2000.
The world has changed dramatically in the last 15 years. The next 15 years are going to be more
extraordinary. Robotics and machine intelligence will restructure the global economy and affect every
facet of our lives. The Internet of Things will add the inanimate objects around us to the global village.
We will be working towards the first humans walking on Mars. Biological engineering will begin to
redirect the evolution of our species
along with provide breakthroughs in agriculture, medicine, and materials.
What is the mission of PBM for the next 15 years? I think it remains simple. Women and men that
thrive in this new age and help their neighbor do the same. I look forward to meeting you and
discussing the direction we will take PBM!
Your brother,
Cesar A. Rodriguez, M.D.
PBM Co-founder and First President
PROGRESSIVE BLACK MEN
Greetings Brothers of Florida Agricultural & Mechanical
University,
I am honored to serve as your National President on the
commencement of the chapter’s 15th Anniversary. As the 2nd
chapter in our organization history I would be remised not to
acknowledge the many distinguished and accomplished men
that laid the groundwork for this chapter. To these men I say
THANK YOU for your hard work and dedication to continuing
Progressive Black Men’s mission and purpose on the highest of
seven hills.
Our organization started as an ideal to address the negative
stereotypes placed upon those of African descent, especially
Black Men. The Florida A&M Chapter has consistently developed service projects that have made a
meaningful impact to the surrounding community and aboard. The Chapter has consistently inducted
men dedicated service and the uplifting of our fellow brother. As the chapter embarks on this new
milestone, new challenges will come forth and I have full confidence in the men of the Florida A&M
Chapter to attack them head on through our simple, but powerful, motto of Collective Knowledge,
Collective Effort, Collective Strength.
Happy 15th Anniversary Brothers!
Dadrian Campbell
6th National President
PROGRESSIVE BLACK MEN
“Collective Knowledge, Collective Effort, Collective Strength”
Greetings Brothers,
15 years ago, these principles united a very dynamic group of individuals as we began a journey.
Looking back on those idealistic young men, there was no way we could know what was to come. As
the founding president, I am extremely proud of what the Florida A&M Chapter of Progressive Black
Men has become. The impact the organization has had on all the members, Florida A&M University,
the community and the National Organization has been tremendous.
As we celebrate 15 years of service and brotherhood, I want to take this opportunity to welcome all
brothers old and new. Although I cannot attend this momentous occasion, my thoughts and prayers
are with you all. I would like to challenge the chapter to continue our relentless pursuit of excellence. I
would like to challenge each individual member to make a personal commitment to self-improvement.
Each class adds to the legacy and heritage of the FAMU Chapter of Progressive Black Men. It is
imperative that we put in the work required to lead, serve and exemplify the characteristics of our
prestigious organization.
Sincerely,
William Johnson
First Chapter President
Progressive Black Men, Florida A&M
PROGRESSIVE BLACK MEN
Dear Chapter Brothers,
It is my honor and privilege to serve as the current chapter
President of the Florida A&M University Chapter of Progressive
Black Men, Inc. What I thought PBM would be and what it
actually is now are two completely different things. I joined
thinking this would be a small org to join just to make friends
and do some community service. PBM is a force to be reckoned
with! The continuous efforts to serve the community do not go
unnoticed; the differences we make in some people’s lives may
be greater than we even know. I don’t know how many times
I’ve been told the community needs more Black men like us to
serve and mentor.
On FAMU’s campus, the presence of PBM is growing tremendously. We are one of the most
recognized student organizations on campus. And I know it will continue. The FAMU chapter has
been a product of trailblazers since October 21, 2000. Student leaders in all capacities have founded
and joined this organization, and we continue to come together to work towards the same mission.
This chapter has helped transform and expand this whole organization, and I’m so proud to say that I
am a brother of, let alone the President of, the FAMU Chapter of Progressive Black Men, Inc. We are
the epitome of black excellence! I love what we’ve accomplished and I look forward to seeing what
more is in store for this chapter.
Sincerely,
Kevin E. Whitfield
