A Letter From Father Andrew
My dear friends
At the beginning of this month we will reaching the climax of our Lenten
pilgrimage with Palm Sunday reflecting Jesus’ triumphant ride into Jerusalem then
on to the reflection, betrayal and fear of Holy Week. The great three days of the
Paschal Triduum, Maundy Thursday Good Friday, Holy Saturday are followed by
Easter Day with its dominant themes of light, new birth and hope. These are the
great liturgies of the church and a source of the most profound worship. This year
we will be unable to celebrate them together as the Archbishops of Canterbury
and York have requested all public worship is suspended for the foreseeable
future. I have written more about the current arrangements for worship later in this
magazine, in the usual monthly diary slot and on the parish website.
How can we make sense of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic that has
caused our everyday lives to change so rapidly and dramatically? When we see
supermarket shelves stripped of essential supplies we may despair at the greed in
our society but when we observe the offers of help to those who cannot get out we
are also amazed at the amount of goodness in the community. These are a reflection
of human nature and the events of Holy Week which we observe in the pictures
around church during Lent: the stations of the cross show the cruelty of the actively
aggressive soldiers and passively complicit crowd; they also show the compassion
of the women of Jerusalem reaching out to Christ as he walks and stumbles along
the road and Veronica, that archetypal woman never mentioned in the scriptures,
who wipes the face of Jesus and finds the image of his face imprinted on her cloth
and on her life.
It has been good to share some of these thoughts with our primary school children
who are very open to different styles of worship and who have really enjoyed
looking closely at these images. At the end of the day, we are being taught that God
knows suffering as he enters into our world. It is anthropological study of human
behaviour. A observer recently gave new depth and insight to what we are currently
experiencing when he said to me that for the last 50 years or so the human world
1
has been destroying the natural lungs of the planet as we deforest vast areas and
now our human lungs are being destroyed by a virus that was unknown only a few
months ago.
This analysis suggests that we are makers of our own fortune and destiny and is a
very salutary lesson for those of us whose mantra has been ‘live for today’.
Whilst these are wise words, providing a source for reflection on our use of the
plant’s resources – God’s world, it rather leaves God out or rather puts him in the
background as does much of the current climate change debate. This may not be
surprising as the believers in rational science and the believers in a spiritual God
are often seen to be in conflict with each other.
The teachings of a previous generation of church leader do not help us explain
to people of the 21st Century where God is in the middle of the current crisis so
it is no wonder that people think that only human action can solve the current
health crisis. On one of my last pastoral visits before reducing my personal contact
with people I was asked about the God of the Old Testament who punishes his
wayward people for their lack of faith. We will not get far in our understanding of
God’s created order, how creation continues to develop through medical science
but overseen by God and the Easter hope if that is all we think. Rather, the God
of compassion, who has been our focus during Lent, is the one who will be our
support and sustainer in the times of testing, pain and grief which we will surely
see in the coming weeks and months. God is with us at this time as we pray:
Compassionate God, as you know each star you have created, so you know the
secrets of every heart; in your loving mercy bring to your table all who are fearful
and broken, all who are wounded and needy, that our hungers may be satisfied in
the city of your peace; through Christ who is our peace.
With every blessing for the hope and light of Easter to shine in your life again

DIARY OF SERVICES & EVENTS
- APRIL 2020 -
Following the suspension of public worship throughout the Church of England
on 17 March, we have no services planned during April. Please keep in touch
for any changes by using the parish website: www.ecclestonstmaryschurch.org
In place of the diary this month, we are reproducing a slightly amended
version of Father Andrew’s open letter about the Current Arrangements for
Worship during this period.
My dear brothers and sisters,
You will be aware that the public life of church has changed considerably since
mid March. Unprecedented arrangements have been put in place to suspend all
public worship with the exception of funerals and weddings for the foreseeable
future. We do not know how long these arrangements will continue, but we are not
expecting them to be lifted until well after Easter. Lent is a period of reflection,
prayer and self giving, and this is particularly true this year. Many people will be
apprehensive or even fearful about what the future holds and I am aware that some
from our community have already chosen to self isolate.
The first tasks were to agree plans with church wardens, create a new web page
and complete school worship and pastoral visits before our activities are further
reduced. Although all regular public worship has been suspended throughout the
Church of England this does not mean we are retreating from the community
or ceasing to offer prayers and worship to God. Daily prayer continues, I will
celebrate the eucharist in church each Wednesday and Sunday and whilst I would
ask that you not come to church at this time to avoid the transmission of infection,
you are welcome to visit church, which will be open during the day, to offer your
own prayers.
The eucharist will be said at 11:30 each Wednesday and at 09:30 each Sunday.
You can participate by joining me on line through the parish Facebook page. The
service will be available for viewing throughout the week.
You can also engage with the life of the parish by keeping up to date with all the
latest developments via a new page on the website which will cover both parishes
in the United Benefice: Charnock Richard, Christ Church and Eccleston St Mary
the Virgin. There is link to the page with all the resources you need during this
testing time on the home page of the parish website.
10
Prayer will sustain us, keep us spiritually healthy and offer the Easter hope during
this time. On the new web page you will find a blog for prayer. Please use it if
you want to offer particular intentions or wish me to include specific prayers
during the day or at the eucharist. Of course, you or someone you know may
require immediate help. Do not hesitate to contact me by phone or email if this
is the case. We have received offers of help for those requiring shopping to be
done and other tasks so please do make contact. If you feel isolated or concerned
about anything at all I am here to support and help. Let me reiterate that the
church is not withdrawing but connecting in new ways to meet these extraordinary
circumstances.
Many of you will have received a telephone call from me recently. We will keep
in touch because the length of this isolation is unknown and we want to welcome
you back to church when we are permitted to do so. Please let me know if there is
anything you require.
Don’t forget the regular updates on the parish website. Take care of yourself, your
loved ones and all those around you.
Yours in Christ,
Fr Andrew

They’ve gone but are far from forgotten
Fr Andrew says a ‘sideways’ farewell and thank you to Bryn and Suzanne Dixon
At the beginning of the year Bryn and Suzanne Dixon moved from their Doctor’s
Lane home in which they had lived for many years to be closer to their family in
Baxenden. I first met this influential couple when I visited the parish for interview
in the Spring of 2013. I was met at Croston station by Bryn and Suzanne who had
volunteered to provide a taxi service to the Parish Centre. As we drove passed
Bishop Rawstorne CE Academy, Suzanne waxed lyrical about that place and how, if
I got the job, it would become a big part of my life. In fact Suzanne never stopped
talking about it both on the car journey and in the following 7 years.
Suzanne has always been challenging and supportive throughout (although I
suspect I never convinced her that a Minister and a Priest in the Church of England
are two different vocations and orders, but they really are Suzanne) although see
admitted that out of all the candidates she provided a taxi service to in 2013, I was
not her ‘first choice’! I think we have worked well together, so thank you Suzanne.
Bryn was initially my PCC Treasurer and Stewardship Recorder moving to the role of
Church Warden soon after my arrival. What Bryn hasn’t done in and for the church
is not worth mentioning. From tenor in the choir, to money counter, light bulb
changer, boiler timer programmer, hedge cutter, memorial cross painter and much,
much more Bryn and his boiler suit is already being missed.
People are already asking how we do such and such. ‘I don’t know’ comes the reply
‘Bryn and Suzanne looked after that’. We were hoping to say thank you and farewell
in a proper and formal way on 19 April. It now looks unlikely that this will happen
as planned. However, I wanted to acknowledge that once some kind of normality
returns to public worship we will invite Bryn and Suzanne back as we say a heartfelt
Eccleston thank you.
IT’S NOT MY JOB!
This is a story about four people named EVERYBODY, SOMEBODY,
ANYBODY AND NOBODY. There was an important job to be done
and EVERYBODY was sure that SOMEBODY would do it. ANYBODY
could have done it, but NOBODY did it. SOMEBODY got angry about
that, because it was EVERYBODY’S job. EVERYBODY THOUGHT
ANYBODY could do it, but NOBODY realized that EVERYBODY
wouldn’t do it. It ended up that EVERYBODY blamed SOMEBODY
when NOBODY did what ANYBODY could have.
Many thanks, Bryn Dixon
