Imagine being told that you “can’t” do the thing you most
want to do or you “can’t” attend the birthday party for
the child that lives next door or you “can’t” be what you

dream of being when you finish school. Too often, the
students who attend Pace have been left out social-
ly and left behind academically by being told they
“can’t do something” or that they are not welcome to
participate on a team or attend a social event.

At Pace, WE BELIEVE KIDS CAN! We believe that if KIDS
CAN, families CAN and communities CAN. We believe
that with a growth mindset, the right instruction, support
strategies and plan, KIDS CAN accomplish amazing things.
KIDS CAN learn things once thought impossible. KIDS CAN
participate with other children in organized group activi-
ties. KIDS CAN embrace and develop their talents toward a
future post-secondary goal.

The following stories are a celebration of what KIDS CAN do!

IC an Play!

“The playing field is a canvas for learning
perseverance, reflection and the ability
to turn a failure into a gain.”

- Wendy Meadows, Pace teacher

The benefits of kids participating in team sports
are well known. Being on a team helps to build
communication skills, self-esteem and a sense of
community. Unfortunately, students with special-
ized needs are often excluded from these types of
opportunities.

Pace recognizes the potential of utilizing sports to teach
these skills to our students in a meaningful and exciting
way. As a member of the WPITL (Western Pennsylvania
Intermural Therapeutic League) our students participate
in football and basketball games with 8 other private
schools. The focus isn’t on winning or losing, it’s on those
important life lessons that are sometimes best taught on a
field or court.

We believe teamwork teaches important social skills and
should be an option for all students. We believe Pace
students have the ability to be successful on the field,
on the court, and beyond. We believe KIDS CAN.

I Can Win!

“In our classes together, I could

see that they were ready,

focused, fantastic kids.”

- Chef James Wright, Mentor

“The winner of this year’s Project Lunch Tray is….Pace
School!” Our students and their families could hardly be-
lieve it as hugs and high fives were passed around.

Just a few months prior, Pace was honored to be the first
Approved Private School entered into this prestigious
cooking competition. Community Kitchen challenged
schools across Pittsburgh to develop recipes and learn to
cook a healthy “lunch tray.”

Months of hard work with Daily Living Skills teacher
Joanne Starolis and Chef Mentor James Wright led to a
high pressure cooking competition where the students’
skills were judged by local experts. Finally, they presented
their tray at the Pittsburgh Farm to Table conference
in March.

Students in special education don’t often have the oppor-
tunity to participate in these types of competitions. Bring-
ing home that silver lunch tray shows them they CAN.

We believe we don’t need to change the standards; we be-
lieve our students can rise to them. We believe KIDS CAN.

I Ca

Every family dreams of taking a trip to Disney. Plans are
made, bags are packed and memories are made to last a
lifetime.

When Trista came to Pace five years ago, a trip like this
wasn’t possible for her family. Behavior and safety con-
cerns made travel and taking part in family outings, a
challenge. Fear of the unsafe and unknown were keeping
them from the simple joys of adventure.

Working on skills like frustration tolerance, communica-
tion and self-regulation allowed Trista to be more inde-
pendent and successful in school. With her family’s sup-
port, she was able transfer these skills into her home and
community.

“If you told us 5 years ago that we’d have typical

family experiences, let alone take a trip to

Disney World, I wouldn’t have believed it.

Thanks to Pace my daughter learned

the skills needed to be out in the

world living her life.”

- Shannon, Trista’s mom

an Travel!

Last year, Trista and her family were
able to take that trip to Disney. What
was once a dream became a reality.

We believe that kids shouldn’t miss out
on these types of experiences due to
their challenges. We believe families
should be able to be active members of
their communities. We believe KIDS CAN.

forI can look
ward!

“I can now allow myself to look a few years

ahead. I definitely feel he has a bright future

ahead of him. Without Pace, Anthony would not

be the kind-hearted child he is today.”

-Debbie, Anthony’s mom

When Anthony came to Pace as a kindergarten student, his
family didn’t know what his future would hold. He had many
difficulties that led to daily tantrums and challenges with learn-
ing. His family had to focus on the present because the future
held too much uncertainty.

While at Pace Anthony was able to learn empathy for others,
socialization and problem solving skills. At his 10th grade IEP
meeting, the team assured Anthony and his family that he was
ready to leave Pace and return to the home district for high
school. With support from his team and family, Anthony is now
a junior at Plum and attending Forbes Career Technical Center
for Cyber Security.

Families and students in special education live everyday with
an uncertainty about what the future holds. We believe that
students and their families CAN look ahead and see a brighter
tomorrow.
