About Photo by Murphy Ng Kota Belud nestles in Sabah's West Coast Division, covering an area of 1,385.65 square kilometres. Located roughly 77 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu, the charming district serves as a gateway to the Kudat Division. Kota Belud's landscape is enhanced by the iconic Mount Kinabalu, making it an appealing destination. Visitors can explore attractions and campsites, and shouldn't miss a river cruise along the Nanamun River. Another of its highlights is the famous weekly 'Tamu' or open market, a Sunday event where locals sell various souvenirs including handwoven baskets and traditional cultural items. The name "Kota Belud" holds meaning in the Bajau language, where "Kota" signifies fort and "Belud" means hill. This translates to "Fort on the Hill," a name that echoes its historical past. During challenging times, the people sought safety by building a hilltop fort, etching resilience into its identity. Kota Belud was also one of the first administrations established in Sabah during British colonial rule. The district is inhabited by ethnic groups of the Bajau (including Iranun), Dusun (Tindals and Tobilungs tribes), and a small community of Hakka Chinese. The West Coast Bajau have established themselves inland near the western and northern shores, showcasing their expertise in rice cultivation and raising livestock. Meanwhile, the Tindals and Tobilungs were predominantly farmers, also specialising in paddy cultivation. Often nicknamed the "Eastern Cowboy District", the community is known for their exceptional skills in riding horses, buffaloes, and cattle. This adds a unique touch to its character and brings alive its vibrant heritage. From its historical significance to its scenic landscapes and diverse people, the district encapsulates the heart of Sabah. It's a place where stories of strength and culture blend seamlessly, inviting all to explore and experience the charms of Kota Belud. 1 KOTA BELUD

TAMU BESAR KOTA BELUD EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS The Tamu Besar Festival in Kota Belud is an annual cultural extravaganza that holds a special place in Sabah's heart. Rooted in the vibrant heritage of the Bajau community, this celebration not only honours the age-old art of horse riding but also serves as a lively marketplace for trading goods, savouring local flavours, and discovering traditional crafts. Translated from the Bajau language, 'Kota' signifies 'fort,' and 'Belud' represents 'hill,' giving birth to the name 'Kota Belud' – a name etched with the spirit of resilience from history's pages. The 'Tamu Besar,' meaning 'Big Market,' is Sabah's largest market festival. Its open-air ambiance welcomes visitors to indulge in trading, relish local delicacies, explore local handcrafts like woven mats and baskets, and catch glimpses of heritage through traditional items. When the festival comes alive, Kota Belud transforms into a vibrant hub, drawing people from far and wide to partake in this grand spectacle. The event paints a colourful tapestry of sights, sounds, and aromas that mirror the local way of life. The Tamu Besar also features traditional sports like buffalo racing and the coronation of Sarempak/Senisip beauty queens. This celebration is more than just a marketplace. It's also a tribute to the legacy of the Bajau people, exemplified by the skilled 'Bajau Horse Warriors' who continue the ancestral tradition of horse riding. As the 'Cowboys of the East,' these riders deck their horses in stunning attire, showcasing remarkable horsemanship skills. What began in the early 1990s as a gathering for horse enthusiasts has blossomed into a multifaceted event that unites heritage and community. Beyond showcasing riding prowess, the Tamu Besar Festival represents unity and tradition. It's a heartfelt invitation from Kota Belud to the world – an opportunity to witness the charm of tradition, the thrill of horsemanship, and the unifying spirit that defines this exceptional celebration. 23
