JDCC sponsored diabetes education during the
Love connection Ministries Monthly food pantry.
During this event, with product provided JJDCC,
PHMC medical clinic was also able to provide
diabetes testing to the local residents attending
the event. Nearly 50% of the residents that
attended the event tested positive for being at
risk for having diabetes and was referred to the
physician for follow-up. During this time the
volunteers from JJDCC, Janssen & Consumer
participated in the distribution and packing of
the food from the pantry.

What an AWESOME February! Field Based AALC Little
Free Library Book Drive
The Field Based AALC executed several initiatives to positively impact the community.
We had a successful Cupcakes & Careers event in Indy, followed by the Little Free Library
Book Drive, and Future Leaders Over-the-Rhine Career Event.

Special thanks to all who donated, and those
who actually assisted with collecting books:

• Ohio: Mechell Stroud, Nichole Heap,
Alicia Mills

• Michigan: Joe Jones

• Kentucky: Ashley Payne, Mary Quinn
• Indiana: Heather Johnson

Field Based AALC Testimonial, Ashley Payne:

I truly enjoyed this project for many reasons:
• We were most importantly living our credo -Having the opportunity to
include our children in the selection of books to donate
• We worked collaboratively across operating companies -We were
strategic in our delivery to the inter-city focusing on different ethnic
groups
• This was just a heartfelt project and humbling to ride down streets we
normally do not pass going to our offices

Career Exposure Workshop organized by CVI Reps, Future Leaders Over-the-Rhine Career Event
Mechell Stroud, & Lawrence Williams
Field Based AALC (IN/OH/KY/MI)

The first of a series of career exposure workshops occurred at the Future Leaders
Over-the-Rhine meeting in meeting in Cincinnati. Future Leaders OTR is a grass
roots program that creates an environment and an expectation of success and
commitment by providing tools in the form of education and experiential
opportunities to help young men and women in OTR forge their futures. Future
Leaders OTR is a year-round program for youth, grades 7-12, living in OTR.

This event was a part of the Field Based AALC’s African American History Month
community outreach activities. David Kirk of DNK Architects, Inc. gave a brief
presentation on career path to architecture and facilitated a hands-on activity
where students created structures from 100 pieces of a single medium. This was a
very fun and engaging activity for the students that they will remember for a long
time!

the group toured this historic Watts Towers of Simon Rodia.

The Watts Towers, consisting of seventeen major sculptures
constructed of structural steel and covered with mortar, are the work
of one man - Simon Rodia. Rodia, born Sabato Rodia in Ribottoli, Italy
in 1879, was known by a variety of names including Don Simon,
Simon Rodilla, Sam and Simon. Although his neighbors in watts knew
him as "Sam Rodilla", the official name of his work is "the Watts
Towers of Simon Rodia". In 1921, Rodia purchased the triangular-
shaped lot at 1761-1765 107th Street in Los Angeles and began to
construct his masterpiece, which he called "Nuestro Pueblo"
(meaning "our town").

Mayme A. Clayton Library & Museum Tour Mayme A. Clayton

On February 5th the Neutrogena AALC visited the Mayme A. Clayton Library and Museum.
The group was able to take a two hour private tour with Lloyd Clayton, son of the late Mayme
Clayton. We were able to view many private parts of the collection including original letters
from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., private photos of the Michael Jackson and the Jackson Five
and a rare signed first-edition copy of Phillis Wheatley's Poems on Various Subjects Religious
and Moral (1773). The Mayme A. Clayton Library and Museum (MCLM) is committed to telling
the story of African-American experience in all its variations: family life, arts and
entertainment, history, sports, medicine, architecture, politics, religion, law, technology, etc.
The visionary, Mayme A. Clayton, Ph.D. (1923-2006), established the Western States Black
Research Center (WSBRC) in 1975 because she believed that “children should know that black
people have done great things.” In 2007, the organization was renamed in her honor as a
testament to her contributions and legacy. Dr. Clayton, a librarian, collector, and historian,
believed that preserving and sharing the often neglected and overlooked history of Americans
of African descent was imperative for current and future generations. For over 40 years she
independently and meticulously amassed a collection characterized as “as one of the most
academically substantial collections of African-American literature, manuscripts, film and
ephemera independently maintained.”
