At an early age, under the spiritual guidance and leadership of the late Rev. Dr. William
McKinley Bowman, Sr., Sister Bowman accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and was
Baptized at the Second Nazareth Baptist Church (SNBC), 2336 Elmwood Avenue, Columbia,
South Carolina where Pastor Johnny Ray Noble, PhD is her spiritual under shepherd. At SNBC,
she has served in many capacities to include Church Secretary, Junior Missionary Society
Director, Junior Usher Board President, Senior High Sunday School Teacher, and Musical Choir
Secretary. Currently Sister Bowman is serving as Church Clerk, Woman’s Ministry Director,
member of the Jones McClerklin Missionary Circle, Evangelism Team, and Jubilee Choir.
The Holy Spirit has empowered sister Bowman to serve in many organizations. She is presently
serving as: Treasurer of the Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Association Woman’s Auxiliary;
Treasurer of the CAJ Class of 1968; Financial Secretary of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Rho
Kappa Zeta Chapter; Financial Secretary of the City Baptist Jubilee Choir Union; Asst. Deputy
Administrator to President Alfreda LeVaine of the National Baptist Deacons Convention
Women’s Auxiliary.
Sister Bowman has attended Midlands Technical College receiving an Associate Degree in
Business Administration, Columbia International University receiving a Bachelor of Science
degree in Bible Teaching and on May 7, 2022, received her Master of Divinity from Dickerson-
Green Theological Seminary at Allen University. If you were to ask Sister Bowman if she is
getting her Divinity degree to be a Preacher; she would tell you, “I am going to Seminary to
study the Word of God to learn more of Him in order to make Him known effectively.” Sister
Bowman loves to read and teach the Word of God.
Sister Bowman has been married to Deacon William McKinley Bowman for forty-three (43)
years. They are the loving parents of four children; they have ten grandchildren and one great
grandchild.
Sister Bowman’s Motto is “Love others as you Love yourself.” She lives by Proverbs 3:5-6;
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding; in all your ways
acknowledge Him and He shall direct your path.” Her favorite scripture is Galatians 2:20; “I am
crucified with Christ: nevertheless, I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I
now live in the flesh, I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave Himself for
me.”

I. Introduction – Lecture
II. Knowing God
a. As Christians, we declare that the only true God has made Himself known to us in
Jesus of Nazareth. In Jesus, we have come to know God. but what does it mean to
know God? Can we make such a claim today? And how does this encounter with
God occur?
b. We know the incomprehensible God - Many people today respond with
uncertainty when we claim to know God. As we all know, there are some who
deny God’s existence (atheism). Then others say even if God exists no one can
ever some to know Him. We can call this viewpoint “agnosticism,” a word that
mean literally “no knowledge.”
We as Christians, boldly testify that we have come to know the living God. Yet in
making that claim we must humbly acknowledge, as the Word of God indicates,
that God in incomprehensible (Job 11:7-8; Ps. 97:2, 143:3; Isa. 40:28, 45:15,
55:8-9; 1 Cor. 2:11). What does this admission mean?
i. To acknowledge that God is incomprehensible means that no human
being can fully comprehend (know or understand) God. We cannot
fathom the depth of the divine reality. Whatever knowledge we have about
God is at best only partial. Nor can we ever claim to know everything
about Him. Rather, God always remains partially hidden, beyond our
observation. God declares through Isaiah: “As the heavens are higher than
the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than
your thoughts” (Isaiah 55:9).
ii. To acknowledge that God is incomprehensible means that our
knowledge of God is limited. As Christians we adamantly maintain that
God can be known. Although our knowledge of God is always partial, we
Page 6 of 39
Glorifying God Continuously For “88” Years!
know God as He actually is. Jesus Himself has declared that through Him
we truly come to know God (John 17:3). But how does this “knowing
God” come about?
c. We know the Self-Revealing God – We know God ultimately only as God
comes to us – only as He gives Himself to be known – only as God reveals
Himself to us. We know God, therefore, because God wants us to know Him.
Jesus explains, “All things have been committed to Me by My Father. No one
knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and
those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him” (Matthew 11:27).
i. This means that we can never make God the object of our human
examination. We do not approach God in the way we engage in the study
of things around us. We do not scrutinize God in an objective, scientific
manner or at our own notion. Why? Because we do not know everything
about God. Rather, in our knowing God, God give Himself to be known
by us.
ii. This means as well that there is a significant difference between
knowing God and possessing knowledge about God. When we know
God, we have gained more than a body of truths. Rather than merely
possessing a list of statements about God, we enjoy fellowship with the
living, personal God. From this relationship, exalted statements about God
take on new meaning. They describe God’s character and greatness as we
have experienced the living God.

Paul’s Letter to Philemon
Greetings
1 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,
To Philemon our beloved friend and fellow laborer, 2 to the beloved Apphia, Archippus our
fellow soldier, and to the church in your house:
3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Philemon’s Love and Faith
4 I thank my God, making mention of you always in my prayers, 5 hearing of your love and faith
which you have toward the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints,
6 that the sharing of your faith may become effective by the acknowledgment of every good thing
which is in you in Christ Jesus. 7 For we have great joy and consolation in your love, because the
hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother.
The Plea for Onesimus
8 Therefore, though I might be very bold in Christ to command you what is fitting, 9 yet for love’s
sake I rather appeal to you—being such a one as Paul, the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus
Christ— 10 I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten while in my chains, 11
who once was unprofitable to you, but now is profitable to you and to me. 12 I am sending him
back. You therefore receive him, that is, my own heart, 13 whom I wished to keep with me, that
on your behalf he might minister to me in my chains for the gospel. 14 But without your consent I
wanted to do nothing, that your good deed might not be by compulsion, as it were, but voluntary.
15 For perhaps he departed for a while for this purpose, that you might receive him forever, 16 no
longer as a slave but more than a slave—a beloved brother, especially to me but how much more
to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord.
Philemon’s Obedience Encouraged
17 If then you count me as a partner, receive him as you would me. 18 But if he has wronged you
or owes anything, put that on my account. 19 I, Paul, am writing with my own hand. I will
Page 9 of 39
Glorifying God Continuously For “88” Years!
repay—not to mention to you that you owe me even your own self besides. 20 Yes, brother, let
me have joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in the Lord. 21 Having confidence in your
obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say. 22 But, meanwhile, also
prepare a guest room for me, for I trust that through your prayers I shall be granted to you.
Farewell
23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you, 24 as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas,
Luke, my fellow laborers. 25 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.
The Passion Translation
Paul’s Letter to Philemon
Greetings From Paul
1 From Paul, a prisoner of the Anointed One, Jesus, and Timothy our brother, to Philemon, our
precious friend and companion in this work. 2 To the church that meets in his house, along with
our dear sister Apphia and our fellow soldier Archippus. 3 May God our Father and the Lord
Jesus Christ pour out his grace and peace upon you.
Philemon’s Faith and Love
4 I am always thankful to my God as I remember you in my prayers 5 because I’m hearing reports
about your faith in the Lord Jesus and how much love you have for all his holy followers. 6 I pray
for you that the faith we share may effectively deepen your understanding of every good thing
that belongs to you in Christ. Your love has impacted me and brings me great joy and
encouragement, for the hearts of the believers have been greatly refreshed through you, dear
brother.
Paul’s Request on Behalf of Onesimus
8 Even though I have enough boldness in Christ that I could command you to do what is proper,
9-10 I’d much rather make an appeal because of our friendship. So here I am, an old man, a
prisoner for Christ, making my loving appeal to you. It is on behalf of my child, whose spiritual
father I became while here in prison; that is, Onesimus. 11 Formerly he was not useful or
Page 10 of 39
Glorifying God Continuously For “88” Years!
valuable to you, but now he is valuable to both of us. 12 He is my very heart, and I’ve sent him
back to you with this letter 13 I would have preferred to keep him at my side so that he could take
your place as my helper during my imprisonment for the sake of the gospel. 14 However, I did
not want to make this decision without your consent, so that your act of kindness would not be a
matter of obligation but out of willingness.
15 Perhaps you could think of it this way: he was separated from you for a short time so that you
could have him back forever. 16 So welcome him no longer as a slave, but more than that, as a
dearly loved brother. He is that to me especially, and how much more so to you, both humanly
speaking and in the Lord. 17 So if you consider me your friend and partner, accept him the same
way you would accept me. 18 And if he has stolen anything from you or owes you anything, just
place it on my account.
19 I, Paul, have written these words in my own handwriting. I promise to pay you back
everything, to say nothing of the fact that you owe me your very self. 20 Yes, my brother, enrich
my soul in the Lord—refresh my heart in Christ! 21 I’m writing to you with confidence that you
will comply with my request and do even more than what I’m asking. 22 And would you do one
more thing for me? Since I’m hoping through your prayers to be restored to you soon, please
prepare a guest room for me. 23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in the Anointed One, Jesus, sends
his greetings of peace to you, 24 and so does Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my
companions in this ministry. 25 May the unconditional love of the Lord Jesus, the Anointed One,
be with your spirit!

The New Living Translation
Paul’s Letter to Philemon
Greetings from Paul
1 This letter is from Paul, a prisoner for preaching the Good News about Christ Jesus, and from
our brother Timothy. I am writing to Philemon, our beloved co-worker, 2 and to our sister
Apphia, and to our fellow soldier Archippus, and to the church that meets in your house. 3 May
God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
Paul’s Thanksgiving and Prayer
4 I always thank my God when I pray for you, Philemon, 5 because I keep hearing about your
faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all of God’s people. 6 And I am praying that you will put
into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the
good things we have in Christ. 7 Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for
your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.
Paul’s Appeal for Onesimus
8 That is why I am boldly asking a favor of you. I could demand it in the name of Christ because
it is the right thing for you to do. 9 But because of our love, I prefer simply to ask you. Consider
this as a request from me—Paul, an old man and now also a prisoner for the sake of Christ Jesus.
10 I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus. I became his father in the faith while
here in prison.
11 Onesimus hasn’t been of much use to you in the past, but now he is very useful to both of us. 12
I am sending him back to you, and with him comes my own heart. 13 I wanted to keep him here
with me while I am in these chains for preaching the Good News, and he would have helped me
on your behalf. 14 But I didn’t want to do anything without your consent. I wanted you to help
because you were willing, not because you were forced. 15 It seems you lost Onesimus for a little
while so that you could have him back forever. 16 He is no longer like a slave to you. He is more
than a slave, for he is a beloved brother, especially to me. Now he will mean much more to you,
Page 12 of 39
Glorifying God Continuously For “88” Years!
both as a man and as a brother in the Lord. 17 So if you consider me your partner, welcome him
as you would welcome me. 18 If he has wronged you in any way or owes you anything, charge it
to me. 19 I, PAUL, WRITE THIS WITH MY OWN HAND: I WILL REPAY IT. AND I WON’T
MENTION THAT YOU OWE ME YOUR VERY SOUL!
20 Yes, my brother, please do me this favor for the Lord’s sake. Give me this encouragement in
Christ. 21 I am confident as I write this letter that you will do what I ask and even more! 22 One
more thing—please prepare a guest room for me, for I am hoping that God will answer your
prayers and let me return to you soon.
Paul’s Final Greetings
23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends you his greetings. 24 So do Mark,
Aristarchus, Demas, and Luke, my co-workers. 25 May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with
your spirit.

Nurturing Converts
Teachers Introduction to Class: My name is Clarice Thompson which is my personal identity.
Doctor is my title. Teacher is my role or responsibility.
Point of information – Some think Christ is Jesus’ last name. Christ is His role or office. The
name Christ reflects the role of being chosen and empowered by God for His unique anointed
purpose.
Requirements for this workshop – Bible, notebook/pen or pencil, attitude to change, and a mirror
(can use your phone camera).
We are going to look into the mirror of our lives that will tell us where we are going and our
preparedness to make the journey to nur-ture and feed God’s sheep. We have a lot of topics to go
over, but we will not go into a lot of details. (The important thing is to be honest with your
service as a leader).
I Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be stead-fast, immovable, always
abounding in the work of the Lord, know-ing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”
Our work for God has value and meaning for at least two reasons (1) God is the one behind it,
empowering us through His Spirit; (2) He promises to reward us incredibly well for our faithful
service.
The salvation Christ accomplished through His cross and resurrection is the gracious gift of God
for sinners. We can’t earn it. But after we’ve received it, we’re not to sit back and do nothing. In
light of our victory over sin and death due to our faith in King Jesus, believers are encouraged to
Page 17 of 39
Glorifying God Continuously For “88” Years!
labor for their Lord.
Make God’s kingdom agenda your own. Don’t become weary or give up because your labor “is
not in vain.” It’s not wasted. You’re not spinning your wheels when you engage in faithful
kingdom ser-vice. God sees your work for Him, and He has a reward in store for you that will
Nurturing Converts
exceed your wildest expectations. Even if it seems that what you’re doing for Him is not making
a very big impact, know this; your labor is not in vain. He pays you for your labor. He doesn’t
pay you depending upon how successful you are in service. Just be faith-ful to do what He has
called you to do and leave the results to Him.
We as Christians have a lot of junk we are holding on too. We need to stop being hoarders of the
things concerning the world. We are holding on to unforgiveness, meanness, broken
relationships, grudges, and jealousy, etc.
You have a list of the survey questions, that we will go over for you to look into the mirror at
your Christian lifestyle. Again, be honest with yourself. The topics listed in the survey are not a
yes or no answers. I will be giving you information that you can compare your answers with
knowing the facts of answering the questions.
We must ask Jesus to help us to see in our hearts, our tone of voice and our words and actions to
face the fact of who we are in Him. Ask God to show us how to let His name be reflected in all
we do. We must seek God’s guidance and His presence to rule over our lives.
The Christian life is one lived by faith in the God who saved us, empowers us, seals us for
heaven, and by whose power we are kept forever. The day-to-day life of faith is one that grows
and strengthens as we seek God in His Word and through prayer and as we unite with other
Christians whose goal of Christlikeness is like our own.
Fundamentals of Our Faith – This workshop will bring pro-found truths which make up our
Baptist faith will be presented in simple and concise form.
This work is not intended to be understood as an official statement of Baptist belief. It is simply
the effort of one Baptist to set forth his/her own understanding of the body of beliefs commonly
held by Baptists.
Nurturing Converts
Throughout this workshop Scripture references have been cited for the benefit of those desiring
to make a more thorough study of these doctrines. Unless otherwise indicated, all references are
taken from the King James Version of the Bible. It is to be hoped that many will be as noble as
Page 18 of 39
Glorifying God Continuously For “88” Years!
the people of Berea, who “searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts
17:11).
Let me be clear about this workshop, the Word tells us that there needs to be a change in how we
are serving the church. When change comes, you will see what you do for God in a different
light. You will see yourself fully committed to loving God and see Him for who He really is, a
God of His Word. You can only know His Word when you read it. Digest it and obey it. In this
workshop you need to give up your perfect Christian walk and face the fact. We have not done
what God has assigned our hearts and hand to do. Our prayer lives on a scale of 1-10, ten being
the highest is a lot. Bible reading, and study is also on a low scale. This workshop is being
presented to nurturing you back to spiritual health. A lot of us have just been living on the idea
that I know Jesus died for me and that’s as far as our relationship to be a Christian has gone. We
don’t give a second thought about the ministry of the church or the needs of the people. When
was the last time you helped someone in real need? When was the last time you told someone
about Jesus Christ? When was the last time you prayed for the need of someone else? When was
the last time you repented for your sin? How is your praise and worship?
We must not have the attitude of being UNHOLY. This is what I mean (an unholy trinity) which
means Me, Myself and I.
We must learn to treat each other fairly. We must learn to follow God before we can help
someone else follow Him. Leaders must be aware of whom they are in Christ Jesus. Leaders
must not give false information to anyone. Leaders must be willing to serve and not look to be
served.
Nurturing Converts
Be honest in what you do and speak. Identify your own weakness and pray about it. Know the
commands God have for us. Always use kindness toward one another this will take work.
Always demonstrate love by not speaking negative in your conversations. Never forget where
God has brought you from. Make sure you practice what we are telling others. We honor God by
serving others with love. Leader’s goal should be to make life with God better. Leaders teach
your disciples that God is a comforter, and provider. Always try to make people fill loved. Show
kindness to those that feel left out. Leaders act on what you believe. We must trust God to take
care of the future. We are healed by the Word of God. We must start our new life with the one
who took us from the old house. Leaders teach your disciples to hear the transforming power of
the Holy Spirit.
Workshop – Nurturing Converts
What is nurture? – Nurture means training or upbringing, care for or feed and educate.
Glorifying God Continuously For “88” Years!
Who is a convert? – It is one who turn from one belief or party to another, change or one who
has undergone religious conversion.
The call to nurture – Have you experienced an urgency stimulated in you through sermons and
messages to assist in carrying out God’s mandates to help build up the body of Christ?
Attitude we should have: A trusting attitude; be submissive to God’s will and obedience.
God’s statement, “I Am, suggest to nurtures; God is sovereign. His promise” to be with you in
your task, is enough!
Nurturing Converts
Introduction
Our churches need to get back to the bases of studying God’s Word daily. The church is our only
hope to meet the needs of our communities. The church (people) needs reviving of spirits and
trans-formed hearts. The only way we can even begin addressing the needs of the church that
influence us outside of the Church will first be to get hearts, minds, and spirits in a spiritual
perspective inside the Church. As spirit filled nurturers the challenges begin with us.
We have the responsibility to follow the plans God has for our lives, by getting on God’s agenda
in how we handle His people.
Nurturing converts calls for commitment, study of the Word, servant attitude and making
yourself available for service. Our mind-set is so important to the growth of the church. We must
conform to His will and purpose through the leadership of God’s under-shepherd, the Pastor.
When we nurture others and do His will and serve the Church and its mission in the world, our
ministry will serve God and with humility and humbleness
We must nurture Christians by empowering, equipping individuals, families, churches, and
communities through proper care. In our nurturing we must teach the truth for transformed lives.
We lack or the core of our problems is a spiritual one: therefore, the only way to address it is
spiritually. People must be moved on God’s Kingdom agenda. The Kingdom agenda can be
defined as the visible manifestation of the comprehensive rule of God over every area of life.
Our lives like the Bible’s theme should be giving glory to God and advancing His Kingdom.
We must share God’s movement in history so, His kingdom can be connected to our lives. When
we fail the absence of the Kingdom’s influence in our personal and family lives, we plan to fail.
Our nurturing cannot fail if you have God, you have hope. If God is still in the picture of your
nurturing, and if His agenda is still on the table, it’s not over.
Nurturing Converts
Glorifying God Continuously For “88” Years!
We must let those God has put in our care know that our world needs the King’s agenda. Our
churches and families need the King’s agenda. We must allow God to be the center of our lives.
He wants us to be kingdom people with kingdom mindsets on fulfilling His kingdom’s purpose.
He wants us to pray, as Jesus did, “Not my will, but Thy will be done,” Because His is the
Kingdom, the power, and the glory.
It is important that we understand that there is only one God, and we are not Him. As King and
Creator, God calls the shots. It is only when we align ourselves underneath His comprehensive
hand that we will access His full power and authority in all areas of life. Just re-member under
God we touch heaven and change the earth.
We must deal with ourselves first.
There are certain general conditions that are essential and must be fulfilled in order to have real
success in bringing people to Christ. These conditions, fortunately, are few and simply, and
everyone can meet these conditions.
You must be truly and thoroughly converted. The person who desires real success in bringing
people to Christ must him/herself be a thoroughly converted person. Jesus said to Peter, when
thou are con-verted, strengthen they brethren (Luke 22:32). Peter was in no position to help his
brothers and sisters until he himself, after his coward-ly denial, had turned again to his Lord with
his whole heart.
If we desire to bring others to Jesus, we must turn away from all sin, worldliness, and selfishness
with our whole heart, yielding to Je-sus the absolute lordship over our thoughts, purposes, and
actions. If there is anything in which we are seeking to have our own way and not letting Him
have His own way in our lives, our power will be crippled, and people will be lost who might
have been saved.
Nurturing Converts
This principle can be applied to the many question that come up in the life of every young
Christian as to whether he/she should or should not do certain things. Everyone can settle these
things for him/herself if he/she has Christ’s honor and not his/her own pleasure uppermost in
their mind, and if he/she looks honestly to God to guide him/her, asking what honor will most
and glorify God.
You must have a love for others and a desire for souls to be brought to Jesus. You must know
and love the Word of God. You must be a person of much prayer. You must be filled with the
Holy Spirit. Whenever it is possible, get along with the person with whom you are dealing. Let
your reliance be wholly upon the Spirit of God and the Word of God. Do not be content with
merely reading passages from Bible. It is often good to only use a single passage of Scripture.
Glorifying God Continuously For “88” Years!
Always hold the person with whom you are dealing to the main point of accepting Christ. Be
courteous. Be intensely sincere and serious. Never lose your temper when trying to lead a soul to
Christ.
A Look into the Mirror Survey
Let us all look in the mirror and answer the following questions: Before you can nurture or guide
anyone else, you must understand your own position in Jesus Christ.
Taking this survey will help you know just where you stand in your walk with Jesus Christ. It is
important that you see yourself for who you are as a Christian. All of us have some growing to
do, so thank God you can identify where you are weak.
You should have learned the importance of spiritual development for nurturing converts. Know
what it means to be called to nurture con-verts. Who is a convert? Becoming spiritually equipped
with the tools of righteousness. Nurturing with love. How to nurturer God’s people for effective
service. Nurturing others through the Word of God.

Lesson Summary – The Great Commission
All of Jesus’ followers must go and tell all followers and unite with the hope of sharing the
gospel with all the world. Natural calami-ties man-made tragedies, and great suffering will
precede His coming. All of these will find His people faithful, even as He is to His promise
found faithful even as God was to God’s promises in sending this child of promise to the world.
Nurturing Converts
Christ is the Messiah. He is the way to God. Jesus is the anointed one or Messiah. Jesus is the
clearest picture of God the world has ever seen. Jesus was sent from God. There is power in the
teachings of Je-sus. Jesus’ teachings required absolute obedience and love for God and the
Kingdom of God.
The story of Jesus is not over. He continues to fulfill His mission wherever His name is
confessed, and His teaching is obeyed, and the faith of Christian is that He will do so until He
comes again.

Acts 6:1-4
Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint

Living Will Writing Workshop:
JULY 15, 2022
Why should you have a Will?
ANSWER: Because upon death, it is a peaceful way to transfer assets to family, friends, and the
church. With proper estate planning, you can avoid paying taxes, bonding insurance and save on
legal fees.
The main goal of the workshop today is to learn how to prepare a basic Will.
I. What is an Inheritance?
Definition of inheritance: Legal inheritance refers to actual property or goods received after a
family member's death. An heir is someone who inherits or takes from an ancestor.
In the theological sense, to inherit means to "receive an irrevocable gift" with an emphasis on the
special relationship between the benefactor and the recipients. Unlike legal inheritance, the
benefactor, God, does not die, yet He provides continual material and spiritual blessings for his
people.
Old Testament- The Mosaic law made specific regulations regarding the transfer of real property.
Initially, upon the death of the father, his estate was left to his sons. But what happened if a
father died with no sons. God then made a change for daughters. “What Zelophehad’s daughters
are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father’s
relatives and give their father’s inheritance to them. Say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and
leaves no son, give his inheritance to his daughter. Numbers 27:7-8. [Blood]
II. Estate Planning- An estate plan is the orderly disposition of one’s probate (proving a Will)
and non-probate assets in accordance with an individual’s wishes and desires. An estate plan
includes:
a. Last Will and Testament.
b. Power of Attorney.
c. Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care (Living Will)
d. Irrevocable Trust for legacy purposes; and
e. List of Assets and tax consequences (optional).
III. Reasons you need a Will.
a. Grieving the loss of a loved one is hard enough without dealing with financial
concerns.
b. Peace in the family.
c. You save time and money
i. Limit Attorney’s Fees
ii. No bond insurance
Glorifying God Continuously For “88” Years!
iii. Reduce tax liability
IV. Dying Without a Will or Intestate- Without an estate plan (i.e., a Will) an individual’s assets
pass by the laws of intestacy. NJSA 3B:5-1 et seq. Bad things can happen when there is no Will.
Example No. 1: The sisters in Soul Food had an intense disagreement before deciding to keep
the house.
Example No. 2: On April 21, 2016, music icon Prince died without a Will, leaving behind an
estate with physical assets—cash, investments, home, royalties, etc.— estimated between $300
and $500 million. Prince’s heirs are one full sister and five half-siblings. The heirs who stand to
inherit his estate are divided over how to proceed, months after they were identified as heirs and
nearly a year after Prince’s death. Also, they fought about attorney’s fees which are more than $3
Million so far.
Both the federal government and Minnesota’s state government will assess so-called “death
taxes” or estate taxes on Prince’s assets and take more than 50% of his estate.
If Prince had married, he could have passed on the entirety of his estate to his spouse, tax free.
However, without a spouse, only $1.6 million of Prince’s estate was free from Minnesota’s death
tax and only $5.45 million escaped the federal death taxes. With Minnesota’s top death tax rate
of 16 percent, and the federal government’s 40 percent rate, meant that over 50 percent of
Prince’s estate went to the government.
V. ASSETS- Many valuable assets don’t go through your Will and aren’t affected by intestate
succession laws. Here are some examples:
• property you’ve transferred to a living trust
• life insurance proceeds naming a beneficiary that survives you
• funds in an IRA, 401(k), or other retirement account
• securities held in a transfer-on-death account
• Bank accounts payable-on-death, i.e., naming a beneficiary, or
• Real estate you own with someone else in joint tenancy or tenancy by the entirety.
These assets will pass to the surviving co-owner or named beneficiary, whether or not you have a
Will.
VI. Writing a New Jersey Will.
Who can make a Will? (NJSA 3B:3)
d. 18 years old
e. Sound mind
f. Formalities and basics:
Glorifying God Continuously For “88” Years!
i. Must be in writing and witnessed by two people.
ii. Witnesses must be competent persons- one witness can be a beneficiary.
Example: Son of deceased can be executor and beneficiary of Will.
iii. Can reference another document that must be in existence when Will is
executed.
iv. Identify the decedent.
v. Revocation of prior Wills.
If no Will, a personal representative will have to provide a New Jersey administrator bond. The
bond is required by the County Surrogate Court serves as a guarantee of certain fiduciary and
legal duties.
Explanation:
Bond insurance covers all the assets of the estate- real estate and personal property. If it takes
two years to complete the estate, you have to pay for the bond for two years.
Who qualifies and what is the cost of bond insurance? When you apply, your credit score will
determine if you qualify. If you do not qualify, you will not be appointed as administrator. If you
have bad credit, you will not qualify.
The cost for bond insurance is set according to a scale. If the estate is $300,000, you will have to
pay about $1,000 for insurance.
VII. Inheritance tax
New Jersey places relatives in certain classes and applies various rates. For instance, Class A
relatives are the spouse, parents, child and grandparents. This class is exempt from taxes. The
next class is the brother or sister of a decedent or surviving spouse of a child of a decedent. The
tax is according to a scale. No tax on first $25,000 and then an 11% rate on next $1,075,000 ect.
For the next relatives, aunts, uncles and cousins, nieces and nephews, a 16% tax rate applies. For
instance, if Aunt B passes and she has no spouse or children BUT has two nephews. If she leaves
a house worth $400,000, the tax rate is 16% and the total tax due is about $64,000. The heirs
can’t take title to the house until a tax return is filed, tax paid and waiver issued.

Pastor Curtis Myers
Curtis Myers and his wife Marcia planted the Engage Church in Central Burlington County, NJ
in the spring of 2020-in the midst of a global pandemic. The Engage Church from its inception
has been utilizing Zoom not only as a platform to convene planning meetings but for community
discussions of topics of racial reconciliation, mental health, financial literacy and even Sunday
worship services. The Engage Church was planted in response to his calling to encourage &
assist people in their pursuit of God’s plan for their lives. Motivated by God’s love for all
people, he shares, coaches, instructs, and mentors people into the best versions of themselves. He
continues to do so professionally as the Founder & President of Aspire which he started in 2003
to pursue his passion of equipping the emerging workforce through innovative career services
and leadership training. He previously served on the pioneering team of The Perfecting Church
(Sewell, NJ) helping to launch and lead several core ministry areas. He also brings over 30 years
of ministry service and leadership roles with Cathedral of Love (Willingboro, NJ) and Living
Faith Christian Center (Pennsauken, NJ). He is a graduate of Willingboro HS and the University
of Pennsylvania-Wharton School of Business, a former football player, and high school coach.

Utilizing Technology to Connect People to the Message of Christ
Instructor: Pastor Curtis Myers
Glorifying God Continuously For “88” Years!
The global pandemic has disrupted the way many aspects of society operate. Many
organizations have changed the way they deliver their goods & services in order to serve their
customers and employees. This disruption, though challenging, has created unique opportunities
to expand the reach & impact of many organizations-especially the church. In this session, we
will focus on real world principles and strategies that any church can use simple technology to
connect people with the love & message of Jesus Christ. Small, medium or large churches can
reach more people regardless of their staff size or technology infrastructure if they embrace the
reality that change is good even if it’s difficult in the beginning.
