Prior to his political career, Cummings practiced as an attorney. Throughout his life, Elijah was dedicated to serving and empowering the people he represented. He served an impressive 14 terms in the Maryland House of Delegates, becoming the first African American in the state to hold the position of Speaker Pro Tempore. In 1996, he was elected to represent Maryland's 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Notably, in 2011, he became the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, later assuming the role of Chairman in 2019. During a House Committee on Oversight and Reform hearing, Cummings emphasized the significant public health issue of childhood trauma, highlighting its long-term negative effects and substantial economic costs to the United States. He recognized the increased risk of various leading causes of death among adults who have experienced adverse childhood experiences. Cummings' profound understanding of trauma and grief's impact on individuals and families influenced his early support for Roberta's House. He served as the Honorary Chair of the successful Capital Campaign to build the state-ofthe-art bereavement center in northeast Baltimore, attending the groundbreaking in October 2018. The center opened its doors in January 2021. Congressman Elijah Cummings unwavering commitment to ensuring a brighter future for every child was reflected in his dedication to public service. In honor of his legacy, the Board of Directors of Roberta's House established the Elijah Cummings Leadership Awards to recognize those who continue his mission. 5

Throughout his tenure representing Maryland in the U.S. Senate, preceded by his service in the House of Representatives, Cardin has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to advocating for the needs of his constituents. Presently serving as the Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he has earned recognition for his bipartisan efforts in advancing U.S. national security interests. Moreover, Cardin has been instrumental in advocating for principles of good governance, transparency, and the protection of human rights, ensuring their integration into American foreign policy initiatives. Senator Cardin is a staunch advocate for ensuring that quality, affordable healthcare is accessible to all Americans, viewing it as a fundamental right rather than a privilege. He has been particularly active in advocating for increased investments in mental and behavioral health services, collaborating with Senator Chris Van Hollen to secure significant funding for initiatives such as expanding behavioral health programs and support for Roberta's House. One of Senator Cardin's notable achievements is leading the effort to ensure access to dental care for children enrolled in the Children's Health Insurance Program. This effort was spurred by the tragic passing of a 12-year-old boy from Prince George's County due to complications from an untreated tooth infection. Senator Cardin continues to advocate for dental coverage for adults and seniors, recognizing the importance of oral health in overall well-being. In recognition of his dedicated service and significant contributions, Roberta's House 2024 Elijah Cummings Lifetime Achievement Award is bestowed upon Senator Ben Cardin as a testament to his unwavering commitment to serving his constituents and improving the lives of all Marylanders. 9

Specifically designed for adults, HTP offers peer support groups that cater to the unique trauma and needs faced by those who have lost loved ones to homicide. These support groups play a vital role in helping survivors navigate their grief and rebuild their lives after such devastating losses. The H.OP.E. Project provides essential support to women who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, pregnancy, or infant loss through its Life After Loss and Still a Mom peer support groups. These groups offer a safe space for women to share their experiences and receive support for up to one year following their loss. 11 6717 H.O.P.E. Interconception Care Home Base Program is a 12-month practical and emotional support program that educates and empowers mothers grieving a pregnancy or infant loss. The program provides home visits, resources, and comfort care and teaches moms and their families to plan a healthy future. Roberta's House Behavioral Health Program provides ongoing mental and behavioral health care to clients dealing with emotional, mental and behavioral health issues such as depression, mental illness, and substance abuse. Certified counselors and social workers provide counseling. We offer fee-for-service and free individual counseling. Our Grief Support Programs

The Homicide Survivor Advocacy Program plays a crucial role in providing direct support to individuals and families who have lost a loved one to homicide. This program ensures that survivors receive timely assistance by connecting with them within 24-48 hours after notification of the loss. The survivor advocates offer compassionate support and guidance to help families understand the next steps in their journey and connect them with essential resources for up to one year following the tragic event. By offering ongoing support and assistance, the program aims to help survivors navigate the challenges of grieving and rebuilding their lives after such traumatic experiences. 18 The Roberta's House Institute provides comprehensive training and skills development for professionals seeking to deliver culturally competent bereavement services, particularly tailored to urban populations. Through a range of workshops and activities, the institute caters to social workers, mental health service providers, morticians, and faith-based bereavement ministries. The Institute emphasizes evidence-based interventions for individuals and families experiencing complicated grief across different age groups, including children, adolescents, teens, and adults. Professionals can access fee-for-service workshops, certification programs, and continuing education credits, ensuring ongoing skill enhancement and knowledge transfer. The seminars and training cover a wide array of topics related to grief and trauma, equipping participants with the necessary tools and expertise to effectively support those navigating the grieving process within urban communities. 18 Men of Loyalty and Dignity (MOLD) offers specialized peer support to men, recognizing the unique challenges they face in coping with grief and loss. Traditionally, societal expectations often pressure men to suppress their emotions and adopt a "suck it up" mentality. However, this approach can hinder healthy healing and emotional expression. This peer support group provides a safe and understanding environment for men to process their grief, challenge traditional gender norms, and promote healthier ways of coping with loss. By acknowledging and addressing these societal pressures, MOLD aims to empower men to navigate their grief openly and authentically. Our Grief Support Programs

Youth Services Roberta's House works with local youth service providers and agencies to build collective efforts to understand the potential negative impact of grief, loss and trauma. Providing Safe Environments for Youth 5-18 to Develop and Sustain Healthy Coping Skills Camp Erin ® Baltimore is a free weekend bereavement camp for youth who are grieving the death of a significant person in their lives. Children and teens ages 6 to 17 attend a weekend camp experience that combines grief education and emotional support with fun, traditional camp activities. Our School-based Social Emotional Wellness Project provides students and faculty grief education and support. Art is intentional in all Roberta's House support groups. Group participants are encouraged to journal their feelings and decorate their masks inside and outside. The Peer Ambassador Project is youth-centered and strategically built to develop youth leaders or peer ambassadors. Peer Ambassadors are youth who have received training and act as liaisons between their bereaved peers, adult providers, and the community. Changing the Game empowers highrisk teens ages 13-17 who've experienced multiple losses with the wisdom and understanding of transforming their lives to create a productive, purposeful life. The Program addresses loss, the absent parent, coping skills, and developing a new outlook on life. It teaches how to create a vision and mission statement. Where No Child Grieves Alone 19 On the inside of the masks participants will write words or phased they internalized their true feelings inside.
