Academics + Athletics = A Win/Win Combination 2 www.bballacademy.com January 20, 2023 Dear Friends, It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 25th Annual Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS) Basketball Academy. “24 years ago, we embarked on a journey to implement a unique concept that had not been done before. At that time, I didn’t know what to expect but I am thrilled that the Academy has not only had an impact on the students and their families, but the community as a whole.” Now in its 25th year, the BCPS Basketball Academy is the area’s sole opportunity to expose inner city high school students to a college campus environment through sports, education, mentoring, developmental programs, and by example. It has helped demonstrate just how academics and athletics can be a winning combination. To this end, we are using basketball as the caveat to develop student athletes as leaders: in school, on the court and at home. The Academy is perhaps the most comprehensive event of its kind in the country. Participants experience Academics and Athletics through an informative, yet fun, program. Please read the entire academic enrichment schedule. This tells you just how much each student athlete gains by participating in the Academy. We are grateful to our partners for their contributions and hard work that support the Academy student-athletes, programs, and academics in general. Through this support, this year we will be able to award over $3,000 in scholarships to deserving students. You help make all of this possible and, again, we are thankful for your continued support. Sincerely, Robert P. Academics + Athletics = A Win/Win Combination 3 www.bballacademy.com January 20, 2023 Dear Friends, Baltimore City Public Schools Basketball Academy Academics + Athletics = A Win/Win Combination Promoting Academics, Athletics, Culture and Service Learning Dr. Warren C. Hayman Thank you for supporting the annual Baltimore City Public Schools Basketball Academy. This year’s event marks the 25th year of the Academy. We are very excited about this milestone and grateful that we have been able to provide student-athletes with the unique opportunity to enhance their academic skills as well as exhibit their athletic talent for so many years. The focus of the Academic component this year will be different than that of past years. We have invited middle school teams (male and female) from Baltimore City and Baltimore County to participate in just the Academic component of the Academy. The idea is to get them to see how important it is to focus on their academic and social development. We will offer workshops that will prepare them to be better studentathletes both on and off the court. Again, thank you for joining us as we celebrate our 25th anniversary. Sincerely, Warren C. Hayman, Ed.D Basketball Academy Co-Chair & Academic Coordinator

Academics + Athletics = A Win/Win Combination 10 HISTORY OF THE ACADEMY Why the Basketball Academy was created § In the mid-90s a number of basketball tournaments were organized around the athletic talent of Baltimore City Public School (BCPS) students. Many people were disenchanted because tournament promoters were pocketing the funds, leaving the students and the school system with no benefits. § The athletes were doing well on the court, but many were not performing well on the SAT exams, not getting scholarships, and not eligible for Division I basketball, due to their academic status. § It was time for a change. Formation of the Basketball Academy § In 1995, Bob Wade called upon former Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Walter Amprey and recommended that Baltimore City Schools start a tournament of its own with an academic component that would ultimately make a difference in the lives of these youth. § Dr. Amprey gave him the green light and Wade began forming the committee. § Dr. Warren Hayman was brought in to head up the academic program. § Once the committee was formed, they approached former Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke, who fully supported the concept and helped them find financial support to generate seed money. § Original supporters were The Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks and the 100 Black Men of Maryland, Inc. § Due to Mayor Schmoke’s major commitment to this program, the committee decided to name the program in his honor – the Mayor’s Basketball Academy. § January 9-11, 1997, the Mayor’s Basketball Academy held its inaugural program. The Academy over the Years § The Academy lost support when the new mayor did not fully embrace the program. § In 2000, the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. signed on as a supporter. § In 2002, the Department Bureau of Recreation and Parks withdrew as a partner. At that time, the committee decided to change the name to the existing Basketball Academy. § The Academy originally brought in out of state teams, which garnered extensive travel and lodging costs. Now, the Academy limits the teams to those in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. § The Academy is coordinated by Baltimore City Public Schools and still remains under the leadership of Bob Wade and Dr. Warren Hayman. § Over the years, the Academy has been sponsored by companies such as State Farm, Under Armour, Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated, Chesapeake Employers Insurance, DTLR, Mountain Dew, MTA, HP, Comcast, 92Q, ABC Channel 2, and M&T Bank to name a few. § Sponsors have provided workshops, college scholarships as well as in-kind services. Results of the Basketball Academy § Many of the students that have taken part have learned new skills and gone on to college. § Scholar athletes are awarded gift cards for outstanding academic achievement. § More than 12,350 students have participated. § Over $146,000 worth of scholarships have been distributed to worthy young people in our area. § Has proven to be a successful program, offering students, administrators, parents, and the greater community more than just a game. § The Basketball Academy has proven that Academics + Athletics = A Win/Win Combination.

Academics + Athletics = A Win/Win Combination 35 MEMORIAL BOOK SCHOLARSHIP RODERICK "RICK" LARRY In recognition of, and appreciation for Rick Larry's contribution to the success of the Basketball Academy, the organizers instituted a $1,000 book scholarship in his name in 2019. The scholarship will be made to one incoming African American female and one African American male majoring in Business Administration at Bowling Green State University (Rick's Alma Mater). Rick used his creative genius to come up with ideas that helped provide funding for the academy, often using his own finances to initiate his ideas. One of Rick's greatest passions was his association with the 100 Black Men of Maryland. The "100" is one of the founding members of the Basketball Academy and the organization focuses on guiding and supporting today's youth. A couple of their signature activities are the tutorial program at Coppin State University, and sponsorship of the Basketball Academy. Rick served as President of the Maryland Chapter for multiple terms.
