Coppin Academy High School “Lift Every Voice and Sing” Lift every voice and sing ‘Til earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of Liberty Let our rejoicing rise, High as the listening skies’ Let it resound, loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith That the dark past has taught us. Sing a song full of the hope That the present has brought us. Facing the rising sun of our new day begun Let us march on ‘til victory is won. Cap and Gown Symbols of Learning Two of the main features of academic dress are the cap and gown. Their design has come to us from the great European universities of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The cap symbolizes freedom and scholarship. This symbol evolved from the ancient Roman tradition which permitted a freed slave the privilege of wearing a cap as an overt sign of his freedom. The gown has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship because it completely covers the dress and rank of social standing. This costume represents the coming together of those who are interested in similar areas of learning. Coppin Academy High School Student Pledge As a member of the Coppin Academy High School family, I pledge to lead our school toward excellence. I will accept responsibility for my actions and abide by school rules. I promise to be loyal to my school and to be respectful to my classmates, school officials, and others that I encounter. I am committed to my success and the success of my peers. With the support of Coppin Academy, I am confident that I will have a prosperous future. I am a Coppin Academy High School scholar. 3
