To the Baltimore Chapter of the Girl Friends, Inc.:
Bravo!
On the 90th celebration of our beloved third chapter,
I extend my congratulations on behalf of our forty-
seven chapters. Your exceptional heritage and legacy
of one of our organization’s building blocks is a
testament to the immense vision that nine pioneering
women had when they formed the chapter in 1930. The
contributions the Baltimore chapter has bestowed on
our organization are countless and include three national
presidents, five national executive board members and hosts to
THREE conclaves. May your dedication to sisterhood,
civic engagement and service continue to live on!
Today is a special day “Celebrating Black Women, Then and Now” and recognizing the immense
contributions Girl Friends and other Black women’s organizations have to the city of Baltimore.
Together they joined together to create a culture of Black excellence and recognized our greatest
strengths are when we work together. It is of note, that we can honor and celebrate Woman of
the Year, Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, who if not for her innate genius and perspicacity help led to the
creation of the Covid-19 vaccine-the first Black woman to create a vaccine. It will be exciting to
see where Dr. Corbett’s “gifts” take her next.
Truly, this nonagenarian celebration of excellence is an example of the Baltimore Girl Friend’s
steadfast commitment bettering our society, friendships and sisterhood and is not a marker of
what has been; it is a sacred promise of what more is yet to come. Let us celebrate!
With Girl Friend warmth and gratitude,
Girl Friend Courtney Moore

History of The Baltimore Chapter of Girl Friends, Inc.
The Girl Friends, Incorporated was founded in New York during the Harlem Renaissance in 1927 by 11 young women based
on friendship and community involvement. It is one of the oldest and most highly respected organizations of African Amer-
ican women in the United States. The second Chapter, Philadelphia, was founded in 1928, followed by Baltimore (1930),
Boston (1931), New Jersey (1932) and New Haven (1932), all based upon the connections of friends. The first Conclave, the
National meeting of chapters, was hosted by New York in 1933, and is documented in the organization’s official magazine,
The Chatterbox, a biennial publication. Since those formative years, the chain of friendship has grown to 48 chapters across
the country and over 1800+ members.
In 1930, The Baltimore Bugs became the Baltimore Chapter of The Girl Friends®, Incorporated, the third chapter invited
to join the Girl Friends. Due to the efforts of Boyfriend Thurgood Marshall, United States Supreme Court Justice and the
husband of GF Vivian “Buster” Marshall (the 3rd National President), the national body was incorporated in Baltimore on
September 23, 1938.
The Baltimore Chapter has an outstanding legacy established by the vision that nine pioneering women had when they
formed the chapter in 1930. We are very proud to pay homage to the following past National officers:
National Presidents
Vivian Marshall
Anita Wheatley
Frances Vessells
National Vice-Presidents
Merry Macer
National Secretary:
Anne Shervington Davis
National Treasurers
Dorothy Bostic
Janie Greenwood Harrison
National Chatterbox Editors
Irma K. Roy
Brenda Baker Coakley
Since those early years, the Baltimore Chapter has hosted three National Conclaves, the last in 1975. We have held 50th,
75th, and 80th Anniversary celebrations. An exhibit of the 75th Anniversary, which was held at The Reginald Lewis Museum
of African American History, was designed and displayed by archivists from the museum. Our 80th Anniversary was held
at Pier IV in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, and we will host our 90th Anniversary in 2022 and the next conclave in Baltimore in
2024, “Charm on the Chesapeake”.

ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED®
RHO XI OMEGA CHAPTER
Rho Xi Omega Chapter, Mrs. Robin Ott, President (first row center)
Chartered, December 3, 1988, by 80 visionary members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, with
a goal to expand the Sorority’s community service mission, Rho Xi Omega Chapter is the second graduate
chapter established in Baltimore, Maryland. Today, Rho Xi Omega is one of more than 1,100 Alpha Kappa
Alpha chapters, nationally and internationally, which include over 325,000 members.
Today, Rho Xi Omega’s membership exceeds 400 dedicated women and its community outreach and
philanthropy have expanded exponentially. Community outreach service includes, but not limited to,
programs in education, health, youth and family services, social justice, the environment, the arts, economic
security, and global perspectives. One of its signature education programs, Camp Fontastic, a summer
STEAM program for middle school students, is now in its 31st year. Funding for the chapter’s service
programs is administered through its 501(c)(3) Maryland nonprofit corporation, Cultured Pearls of Service,
Incorporated.
As the chapter executed its robust service program, it also cultivated and fostered effective partnerships with
vital community organizations including its 30-year endeavor with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central
Maryland, its 24 years with the American Red Cross as a top recruiter for African American bone marrow
donors, and its 15 years “Dare to Dream” After School Program in partnership with Family and Children’s
Service of Central Maryland and the Annie Roberts Foundation. In 2016, the chapter received a grant award
from the United States Department of Agriculture for an urban garden project that it is currently operating
in partnership with Hilton Elementary School and a grant from Constellation Energy.
For the past 33 years, the chapter has endeavored to provide exemplary service programs and stellar
leadership to the Baltimore community
