2023 Annual Memorial Day Service of Remembrance “Where Memories Are Preserved”

2023 Annual Memorial Day Service 1 May 29, 2023 Dear King Memorial Park Families, In 1973, four funeral directors, James Morton, Leroy Dyett, Vernon Bailey and William March, competitors in funeral service, came together with the goal of establishing a black owned cemetery, that would guarantee a decent, well-kept cemetery for the black community. Until that time, the historically black owned cemeteries had been neglected and had fallen into disgraceful disrepair. They purchased fifty acres in the rolling hills and green pastures of rural Baltimore County, in a community that was known as Kings Park. It was only five years since the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and they decided to use the original name of the area and dedicate the newly established cemetery, King Memorial Park, to his memory. Eventually, the March Family purchased the cemetery from the other funeral director partners, in order to make the necessary improvements and expand the cemetery to its current 155 acres. Today, fifty years later, King Memorial Park is proud to be regarded as one of the most respected cemeteries in the country, white or black, and is the cemetery of choice for the Black and Muslim community of Baltimore, as well as attracting more and more families from the Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia area. On this, our 50th Anniversary, the March Family and staff are re-dedicating our commitment to providing our community with the highest standards of cemetery care, at the most reasonable prices, to assure all of our families that they can have and deserve a cemetery they can be proud of to preserve their family memories and heritage. It has been a heartfelt mission and privilege to render compassionate care to our community and an honor to gain the confidence of families entrusting their loved ones to King Memorial Park for the past fifty years. To God Be The Glory, Erich W. March President

8 King Memorial Park Guest Speaker Governor Wes Moore Wes Moore is the 63rd Governor of the state of Maryland. He is Maryland’s first Black Governor in the state’s 246-year history, and is just the third African American elected Governor in the history of the United States. Born in Takoma Park, Maryland, on Oct. 15, 1978, to Joy and Westley Moore, Moore’s life took a tragic turn when his father died of a rare, but treatable virus when he was just three years old. After his father’s death, his family moved to the Bronx to live with Moore’s grandparents before returning to Maryland at age 14. Moore is a proud graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy and College, where he received an Associate’s degree in 1998, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Afterward, he went on to earn his Bachelor’s in international relations and economics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. While at Johns Hopkins, Moore interned in the office of former Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke. Moore was the first Black Rhodes Scholar in the history of Johns Hopkins University. As A Rhodes Scholar, he earned a Master’s in international relations from Wolfson College at Oxford. In 2005, Moore deployed to Afghanistan as a captain with the 82nd Airborne Division, leading soldiers in combat. Immediately upon returning home, Moore served as a White House Fellow, advising on issues of national security and international relations. In 2010, Moore wrote “The Other Wes Moore,” a story about the fragile nature of opportunity in America, which became a perennial New York Times bestseller. He went on to write other best-selling books that reflect on issues of race, equity, and opportunity, including his latest book “Five Days,” which tells the story of Baltimore in the days that followed the death of Freddie Gray in 2015. Moore built and launched a Baltimore-based business called BridgeEdU, which reinvented freshman year of college for underserved students to increase their likelihood of long-term success. BridgeEdu was acquired by the Brooklyn-based student financial success platform, Edquity, in 2018. It was Moore’s commitment to taking on our toughest challenges that brought him to the Robin Hood foundation, where he served for four years as CEO. During his tenure, the Robin Hood foundation distributed over $600 million toward lifting families out of poverty, including here in Maryland. While the Robin Hood foundation is headquartered in New York City, Wes and his family never moved from their home in Baltimore. Moore has also worked in finance with Deutsche Bank in London and with Citigroup in New York. Moore and his wife Dawn Flythe Moore have two children – Mia, 11; and James, 9.

10 King Memorial Park The Stewart Brothers were born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. While growing up, music was always an outlet for the brothers. Gary & Aaron began playing instruments at a very early age and began to use their musical gifts for God by playing in church. Gary started playing drums at age 6. Aaron started playing drums at age 4. Gary started playing the piano at age 10. Aaron started playing the bass guitar at age 9. Gary started playing the Hammond B3 & Pipe Organ by age 14. Aaron started singing by age 15. All of these things would come together for their ultimate destiny. Their musical instincts grew even more through classical training at The Illustrious Morgan State University where they developed musical sight reading, and classical singing. The Stewart Brothers and Friends musical group was formed in 2011. Gary and Aaron were asked to form a group that they could put together to sing and minister to God’s people. The Stewart Brothers & Friends name comes from the two brothers and their vocally gifted friends ministering and encouraging God’s people. While growing up in the AME Church, the Brothers grew up playing and singingHymns. Little did they know that God would use this to fulfill their God given purpose for their first musical project, “Encounter Hymn” that was released on February 19th, 2021. The Stewart Brothers continue to serve the Lord and minister throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region. Most of all, they made a vow to GIVE GOD GLORY whenever they minister God’s word through song! Louis Spencer and Voices are a group of young, gifted artists and singers from Baltimore City. Formed in 2015, this group began ministering in churches and have been featured in several different performances, shows and plays. Under the direction of Louis Spencer, the Voices have traveled across the country sharing their talents and providing vocal support for nationally televised award shows, local artists, and legendary artists such as Autumn Rowe, Biianco, and Twinkie Clark. Louis Spencer and Voices are set to release their first single this Fall. Our Featured Artists

11 2023 Annual Memorial Day Service The Baltimore Metropolitan Area Chapter of the 9th and 10th Buffalo Soldiers Association was chartered on July 25, 1996, and it was agreed that such an organization was necessary, lest the memories of the Buffalo Soldiers be forgotten. The mission of the Baltimore Metropolitan Area Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers is to perpetuate the memory of comrades who have passed on...and the history, contributions, and many accomplishments of the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments in the defense of our country. The 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry have a rich legacy of courage, valor, bravery, patriotism, achievements, and contributions; and this proud legacy must be properly and accurately detailed, documented, preserved and told. This is not just African-American history, but AMERICAN history. The Baltimore Metropolitan Area Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers offer lectures, presentations, photo and historic picture displays, and cavalry memorabilia. Our dedicated members are available to visit schools, churches, community centers, etc., to talk about this forgotten and important piece of our history. For additional information you can contact Trooper Managua Locke, President or Trooper Tinell Pratt, Event/Parade Coordinator, through our website, at www.baltimorebuffalosoldiers.org, or contact our Chapter, by mail, at P. O. Box 5850, Pikesville, Maryland 21208. Honor Guard The Buffalo Soldiers
