Mentoring Male Teens in the Hood

2100 N Monroe St.
2nd Floor - Room 3

Baltimore, MD 21217

Dear Friends,

As I was growing up as a young black man in the Park Heights community of Baltimore City, I
knew that the influence of role models could make the difference between my success or lack
thereof. I knew instinctively, that having a mentor in a black man to whom I could look up to,
and upon whom I could call in times of trouble would make all of the difference between the
vision I saw for myself and bringing that vision to fruition.

For the last 25 years, Mentoring Male Teens in the Hood, has been holding space and filling a
void for the young men, whom they call “Kings”, who previously have not had access to these
role models. Through direct mentorship by its founder, Cameron Miles, and a host of caring
individuals from all walks of life who have attended bi-monthly programming with the “Kings”,
more than 3,000 young people have been able to directly increase outcomes of going to college,
increased social and emotional awareness, career development and participation in school. We
know that these attributes have also helped these “Kings” develop an improved sense of self-
esteem.

As the Mayor of Baltimore City, where there continues to be a great need to encourage and
uplift young men and inspire them to see beyond the crime in their neighborhoods to pathways
to greater horizons, I am particularly pleased to salute this organization.

Congratulations to Mentoring Male Teens in the Hood for its exemplary service to Baltimore
City’s young men and their families for 25 years. On behalf of the City of Baltimore, I am
wishing you many more successful years of transforming the lives of “Kings” throughout our
city.

Sincerely,

Brandon M. Scott

“Investing in Boys, Building Strong Men”

Dear Friends:
Welcome to Mentoring Male Teens in the “Hood’s” 25th Anniversary Celebration!

Twenty-five years ago when our Founder, Cameron Miles, heard young people being unruly in the hallway
of the Department of Social Services, and decided that he wanted to create an organization to provide
a positive means for channeling that energy, he never could have imagined we would all be seated
here together today.

Yet, feeding a need for belonging, awareness, and constructive activity in the hearts of Baltimore youth
turned into a 25 year sojourn to touch the lives of more than 3,000 male teens, their families and the
hundreds of adults who mentored them along the way. For this 25-year long journey we are truly grateful.
However, we fully recognize that we did not reach this milestone by ourselves. If it takes a village to
raise a child, then it takes community of board members, sponsors, supporters, political leaders, mentors,
parents, friends and angels to turn 3,000 kings into strong men in Baltimore City and beyond. Therefore,
as we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we want to take time out to celebrate each of you for the
individual and collective support. We want to thank you for recognizing the need to invest in boys in
Baltimore City. We also want to thank you for allowing our vision of building strong men to resonate
with you so deeply that you championed for us with everyone within your sphere of influence - friends,
family, fellow business leaders, and others so that TOGETHER we could make a collective investment
in the futures of boys in Baltimore.
Finally, we’d like to thank our Kings. We salute you for embracing this investment into your future. Our
wish for you is that your decisions of tomorrow be greatly influenced by the knowledge that the
collective and individual investments of everyone in this room brought you to this moment. May their
love and support continue to light your path and your journey towards manhood.
Sincerely,

Cameron E. Miles

Mentoring Male Teens in the “Hood” Legacy

Imhotep Simba and Leevi Lewis-Simba

Twenty-four years ago, 30 year old Imhotep Simba was a King in the Mentoring Male Teens in the “Hood” program.
He was seven years old. The program has been so invaluable to him that he not only decided to become a
mentor, but to bring his 9 year old son, Leevi, to enjoy the experience.

“They teach me how not to be involved in bad things like drugs, and the importance of being respectful,” Leevi
said. “They also take us on trips to fun places, like basketball games, out-of-state colleges and universities
and the YMCA.”

Imhotep is an active parent in Leevi’s life, but he adds that while the power of being mentored in the program
may with appeal to Leevi’s sense of fun right now, its effects will be long lasting and life changing. This is the
reason that Imhotep gives so freely of his time on Saturdays and weekends to serve as a Mentor alongside
Mr. Miles to the rest of the Kings.

“The program really helped me because I grew up in a single parent household, like many of the young brothers
who participate in the program,” Simba said. “But the program at large and Mr. Miles was a very notable substitute
and or complement to help me overcome some of the challenges I experienced as a young brother.”

Imhotep says it was also helpful to see black male role models in Mr. Miles and the various people who came in
to speak to us about their careers. The program helped him develop in his career as well. He has worked in the
Peace Corps and as a Program Manager for a national nonprofit focused on mentoring. Currently he works for
the Annie E. Casey Foundation, a philanthropy organization that advances practices and policies that improve
the lives of children, young people and families.

I really credit [much of my success] to the program,” Simba says. “Had it not been for Mentoring Male Teens in
the “Hood” I am not sure what my [life and career] would have consisted of. I probably would have been on the
wrong end of statistics.”

“The program provided me with the intangible fundamentals that eventually contributed to improving my quality
of life. Therefore, two decades later, I enrolled Leevi to also start his journey in the rites of passage.”
