MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR
Greetings,
What a joy today is as we gather here to celebrate the anniversary the Lord has prepared for
us. Let us quote Ephesians 3:20 “Now unto Him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly
above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us”. As pastor of
this great congregation, I am proud to say that down through the years, God has allowed
Fountain Baptist Church, to do great work for the Kingdom of God. So let us wish our
church the best of wishes as we celebrate 120 years of faithful service unto the Lord. We
certainly thank our Heavenly Father that He has allowed us to make it this far. He has led
us in the direction of righteousness since our beginnings. And we stand on the shoulders
of those who came before us. So let us pray for spiritual growth and continued prosperity,
as well as the continuation of His goodness to bless our future as a church and community.
In His Service,
Rev. Dr. Marcus G. Jones, Pastor
FOUNTAIN BAPTIST CHURCH 1
MESSAGE FROM THE CO-CHAIRS
What an incredible God we serve! Words cannot adequately convey the joy we feel in
being a part of this celebration of God’s goodness and divine providence. One hundred
and twenty years ago He blessed and showered favor upon a small band of believers and
allowed the fruits of their labor to take root, flourish and multiply in manifold magnificence.
We are humbled by the thought of being included in this great legacy called the Fountain
Baptist church.
Congratulations to our Pastor, Dr. Marcus G. Jones, our membership, both past and
present for your collective pursuit of the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
We also thank God for this grand moment marking ninety-five years to the day, that our
forefathers and mothers marched into 1211-1215 E. Monument Street near Gay, for the
very first time. As Co-Chairs we thank each of you for joining us today and remember
“We Still Have Work To Do.”
Lovingly submitted,
Deacon Alvin O. Gillard
and Sister Ethel L. Hall

Church History
120th Church AnniversaryFOUNTAIN BAPTIST CHURCH 4
of FountainAN ABBREVIABTEaDpHtiIsStTCOhRuYrch
The Fountain Baptist Church was founded and organized by a group of Brothers and Sisters who assembled at
the home of Sister Eliza Carey, in the 1500 block of North Dallas Street in East Baltimore. There they sang,
prayed, and talked about the goodness of God and His mighty works. This group consisted of Sisters Eliza
Carey, Rosa Hunter, Mildred E. McCormick, Lizzie Smith, Minnie Roy, Josephine Shaw, Roseline Redd,
Reverend Jacob Darning, Deacons James Watkins, Eddie Watkins, Morgan Hunter, Sanders, Dan Taylor and
Brother William Redd.
In May 1902 The Reverend Johnnie Jones, Pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church, learned of this group of
Christians through two of his Deacons, John Robinson, and Doc Robinson. Reverend Jones met with Sister
Rebecca Smothers and Sister Roseline Redd to plan to have Reverend C. M. Ball Fields of Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania come to Baltimore and conduct a meeting. After the meeting, Reverend Jones and Reverend
Fields assisted the group in organizing a church. The church was named “Fountain Baptist Church”; the name
Fountain was derived from the hymn that was sung so often by Brother William Reed entitled, “There Is A
Fountain Filled With Blood.”
Thereafter the members called Reverend Fields to serve as pastor. With this faithful group, the Pastor organized
a Choir, a Missionary Circle, a Board of Trustees, and a Sunday School. After organizing these groups, the
membership desired a building to worship in and was successful in acquiring the building at 1011-1013 North
Durham Street. During the first year, Reverend Johnnie Jones and the Ebenezer Baptist Church assisted
Fountain with her Communion Services. Forty-one members were added to the church roll.
For three years, the membership continued to grow. At the end of the fourth year, Pastor Fields accepted a call
to minister in Norfolk, Virginia. Soon afterward, the members asked two Associate Ministers, Reverend Jacob
Darning, and his son, to serve in the pulpit until another pastor was called.
In 1906, the Reverend E. C. Layne of New Jersey was called to serve as pastor. The members and the newly
elected pastor were successful in organizing two Rose Bud Circles and one Adult Council named Layne’s
Excelsior Council No. 773 1.0 of Saint Luke. After three years of service, the Pastor’s health began to fail. In
1909, he passed to his eternal rest.
In 1910, the Reverend R. B. H. Green was called as pastor. The church progressed financially, spiritually,
and numerically. Due to the growth of the membership, more space was needed. The church purchased
two houses, 1035 and 1037 North Wolfe Street and a building in the 1000 block of Rutland Avenue. Before
moving into either of the buildings, the pastor and the deacons were informed of a church building that was
for sale. The building was located at Harford Avenue and Chase Street. After the building was purchased and
renovated, the congregation moved in. When the first baptismal service was held in the church, 28 converts
were baptized. Reverend Green served as pastor for about 14 years before resigning as pastor of the Fountain
Baptist Church.
In 1926, the Reverend J. R. L. Coel of Wilmington, North Carolina was called as pastor. Reverend Coel was a
great preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Under his leadership, the membership continued to grow. Again,
a more spacious building was needed. The church contracted to purchase its present site, 1211-1219 East
Monument Street for the price of $30,000. A few years after moving into the new location Reverend Coel left
the church and about 300 members went with him.
FOUNTAIN BAPTIST CHURCH 5
There were a faithful and determined few who remained at Fountain. For ten months, Reverend Dennis
Barrow served as acting pastor while Reverend Simon Williamson, Pastor of the Faith Baptist Church, served
as spiritual Advisor to Fountain.
In 1932, the Reverend W. D. D. White of Richmond, Virginia was called as pastor. During his first and
second years, he ordained eight Deacons and organized five more auxiliaries.
In 1934 Reverend White resigned as pastor of Fountain Baptist Church.
In 1934 Reverend Dennis Barrow served as acting pastor for 14 months. On January 5, 1938, Fountain
called Reverend Dennis Barrow to serve as pastor of Fountain Baptist Church. During Reverend Barrow’s
administration, Fountain made great accomplishments through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Reverend
Dennis Barrow was accepted as pastor for his life-time in 1945. After 33 years of laboring as pastor of the
Fountain Baptist Church, Dr. Dennis Barrow retired on January 6, 1971.
The church was without a pastor from January 7, 1971 to July 1, 1972.
On March 1, 1972, Reverend Charles Matthew Franklin was elected as pastor of the Fountain Baptist Church.
He began his pastorate on July 2, 1972. In 1977, Dr. Franklin resigned as pastor of the Fountain Baptist
Church.
On June 4, 1979, Reverend Herman Alfonso Ford was elected as pastor of Fountain Baptist Church. Reverend
Herman A. Ford retired as pastor of Fountain Baptist Church February 4, 2006.
In the absence of a pastor, Assistant Ministers Reverend Dr. Andre Humphrey, the late Reverend Adrian S.
Purvis, and Reverend Lionel Snowden served in the pulpit until October 7, 2007. The church continued to
grow spiritually and numerically under the guidance and leadership of Deacon Alvin O. Gillard, Chairman,
and the Deacon’s Ministry.
On August 29, 2007, Reverend Dr. Michael A. Chambers was elected as Pastor of Fountain Baptist Church,
he began his pastorate on Sunday, October 14, 2007.
Fountain Baptist Church continued to grow, numerically, financially and spiritually under the leadership of
Reverend Dr. Michael A. Chambers.
On Sunday, April 10, 2016, Reverend Michael A. Chambers officially resigned as pastor of Fountain Baptist
Church.
In the absence of a pastor, Assistant Ministers Reverend Richarde Graham, Reverend Priscilla Winkler,
and Minister Samuel McCullough served in the pulpit until September 27, 2021. The church continued to
grow numerically, financially, and spiritually under the guidance and leadership of Deacon Alvin O. Gillard,
Chairman, and the Deacon’s Ministry.
On August 1, 2021, Reverend Dr. Marcus G. Jones was elected as Pastor of Fountain Baptist Church, he began
his pastorate on Sunday, October 3, 2021.
Fountain Baptist Church continues to grow, numerically, financially, and spiritually under the leadership of
Reverend Dr. Marcus G. Jones.
