UNVEILING LITERARY MODERNISM NDUB English Club & NDUB Language Center are pleased to announce the success of their recent seminar titled "Approaching Literary Modernism, with a Note on Post-Modernism." The seminar, held on May 16, 2023, at NDUB's Multipurpose Hall, drew 40 attendees from various faculties across the university. The collaborative effort of the NDUB Language Center & NDUB English Club made this program possible. Since its establishment in 2019, the Language Center has assisted students with their language skills. The NDUB English Club supports intellectual and academic growth, nurturing critical thinking and analytic reasoning. This seminar was part of those efforts to enhance students' intellectual development. The program began at 2:00 pm with the audience taking their seats. The hosts warmly welcomed everyone and introduced the esteemed chief guest, Dr. Fr. Patrick Gaffney, CSC, and the keynote speaker, Dr. Fr. Charles B. Gordon, CSC. After providing a brief description and key features of modernism and postmodernism, the hosts introduced themselves. They invited Dr. Fr. Patrick Gaffney, CSC, to deliver his welcome speech and share his insights. Father Patrick took the stage and extended his warm welcome to all attendees. He briefly discussed the origins of modernism before inviting Father Charles to commence the main program. The seminar focused primarily on modernism while touching upon post-modernism. It delved into the origins, the significant impact on literature and society, and the influence of the prevailing mindset during that era. Concepts such as the germ theory of literature, meliorism, pax Britannica, high diction, and valorization were explored. The keynote speaker briefly defined post-modernism as "modernism without regret" and highlighted its key features, distinguishing it from modernism. AT THE TENTH YEAR OF NDUB: THE CSE DEPARTMENT Digits are single numbers as we know primarily and they can make a large number. But digits bear other deep connotations other than numbers, depending on our cognitive perceptions. Through these numbers, we can visualize our remote past and understand the present as well as focus on the future. This is involved with the combination of digits, ‘Years’. We visualize the time span of about last ‘ten’ years from 2013, when Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) was established through the relentless efforts of Catholic Fathers. Among them Fr. Benjamin Costa CSC and Fr. Joseph Stephen Peixotto CSC, who passed away, contributed a lot in founding this institution and taking it one step ahead. But some other priests who are working relentlessly for the development of NDUB, inspire and enrich us with their valuable knowledge and deep insight. Notre Dame University Bangladesh begun its journey with four departments: Business Administration, Students & Convocation Administration, English, Economics and Law. After eight months years of budding pace, the digital arena came into being with the inclusion of the fullfledged department: Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) that was in the year 2015. Since then, we have been on the move. The digits are changing every year, rather numbers are increasing and with rhythmic gentle pace, the CSE department is rolling ahead gloriously! PROF. DR. ALOKE KUMAR CHAKRABORTY DEAN OF FACULTY, NDUB Students are the basic or fundamental entity of any educational institution and NDUB is of no exception. We can joyfully remember our ‘First batch of students, their number was encouraging indeed, it was 31 (thirty-one), a combination of female and male students. As the time elapsed, one after another year, NDUB flourished, number of students in the CSE department increased, sometimes decreased also, and now in 2023, 40 (forty) students in Fall semester of 2023 in CSE department in batch number 22 (twenty-two). So, we are in the state of expanding juncture in many aspects. Enthusiastic prospective students from various parts of Bangladesh are admitted to the CSE department. So far 10 batches of CSE students have successfully completed their graduation and passed out and the first convocation was held in 2019. NDUB is on the verge of holding its second convocation in near future. 58 NDUB BULLETIN

After passing out, large number of CSE graduates seeking for job have been employed in IT sectors of prestigious private/autonomous organizations and also in government establishments. Desire for higher studies at home and abroad is evident among the meritorious graduates. Many graduate engineers of CSE department have gone to other countries in Europe, Canada, USA, etc. Self-employment of pass out students CSE is also remarkable. Employment of CSE Graduates & their Higher Studies Number of well-qualified experienced faculty members at the beginning was 4(four) and their number is 13 (thirteen) in the CSE department. Among them 5 (five) faculty members have been continuing with the sweet memories from the initiation of the department and remaining members joined at several time intervals with skill and experience from other academic institutions. During the time span of 2015 to 2023, about 9 (nine) years, their number varied many times, they taught with dignity and went abroad for higher studies with the bright experience of NDUB. The faculty members of the CSE department are endowed with sound academic background, and dignified quality in every aspect. Faculty Members At the beginning, we had 3 (three) labs, now we have 6 (six) labs; earlier we were in the curriculum of four months’ trimester, now we are in six months’ semester implementing the UGC suggested outcome Based Education (OBE) curriculum. The ultimate goal of CSE department is the attainment of Accreditation along with other departments of NDUB. During the earlier stage, we invited lab personnel from BUET, but now we have our own lab personnel well-qualified and with developed skill. Labs & Curriculum There are 7 clubs in NDUB and the Computer Club is one of them for the CSE students. This club organizes workshops, seminars, intra and inter university gaming competitions. Bright and potential members participate in other universities and organizations and some of them have achieved ‘honor’ in competitions. Moreover, Annual picnic and study tours have been arranged regularly by the department with exception of the COVID period. CSE students can join other clubs of NDUB also. UNFOLDING THE CANVAS OF LAW AT NDUB I started my journey at Notre Dame University Bangladesh in November 2014. I feel a great deal of appreciation and pride when I think back on my tenure as the first faculty member in the Department of Law at Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB). The university's reputation for academic excellence, commitment to nurturing ethical leaders, and fostering an inclusive and integrating learning environment drew me in from the very beginning. As an academic, I am always eager to contribute to the institution's mission to seek sincerely and diligently true knowledge and wisdom for life and living, so that the students develop their best selves to serve the society and contribute effectively to humanity. The broad and active student body at NDUB is a testament to the institution's dedication to offering a well-rounded education. Interacting with students from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences enriched my understanding of the law's impact on society. Through classroom discussions, seminars, and co-curricular activities, I observed firsthand how NDUB's multifaceted and holsitic approach to education helped students become well-rounded individuals capable of addressing contemporary challenges. One of the most rewarding aspects of my tenure at NDUB is the opportunity to mentor and guide aspiring legal professionals. As a faculty member, I not only teach courses but also serve as an academic advisor, providing personalized guidance to students as they navigate their academic and career paths. Witnessing their growth and witnessing their success in their legal careers has been immensely fulfilling. TASNUVA SHARMIN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR DEPT. Thelaw is a causeway upon which so long as he keepsto it, a citizen may walk safely." - Robert Bolt NDUB BULLETIN 63

Beyond academics, NDUB also emphasizes the importance of co-curricular activities, community engagement and social responsibility. I consider myself incredibly fortunate as I have had the privilege of working as a moderator for the NDUB Cultural club. It has been an enriching experience that has allowed me to engage with various cultural activities and events, all while fostering a strong sense of community among the club members. Being a part of NDUB's Faculty of Law has not only enriched my career but has also shaped my perspective on life and the impact I can have on the world around me. I am honored to be a member of this remarkable institution and proud to contribute to its legacy of fostering exceptional legal professionals and ethical leaders who will continue to make a positive difference in the world. I am filled with gratitude for the opportunities, growth, and memories this institution has bestowed upon me. NDUB's commitment to excellence, inclusivity, and social responsibility has been an inspiration and a guiding force in my professional journey. 64 NDUB BULLETIN

NDUB ALUMNI I stand here as an alumna, I hope to be a source of inspiration and support for the current generation as well. As I step through familiar gates of my beloved alma mater that molded me into the person I am today, a rush of emotions envelop me like a warm embrace—nostalgia, gratitude, and a profound sense of fulfillment. Returning to my campus, not as a student but as a faculty member, marks the apex of a transformative journey that began here years ago, when the world seemed full of endless possibilities and the path ahead was an exciting adventure waiting to unfold. The campus has changed over the last decade, modernizing to keep up with the fast-paced world, but its essence remains untouched—a place that nurtures not only academic growth but also fosters friendships and cherishes memories. The trees that once stood as saplings now tower high, symbolizing the growth and progress of both the institution and its students. Looking back, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences gained through extra-curricular activities besides my academic lessons. I cherish the memories, invaluable lessons and connections that I made along the way. As a student, I had immersed myself in various extra-curricular activities that enriched my university experience beyond the confines of the classroom. Whether it was joining the English Club, organizing events, cultural programs, debates, and engaging in different voluntary works at the university; each of these endeavors taught me leadership, teamwork, nurtured my confidence, honed my communication skills and helped me find my voice. Notre Dame University Bangladesh has shaped my character, instilled values, and taught me to persevere through the challenges of life. PRITHWI AGNES ROZARIO NDUB Alumni NDUB BULLETIN 65

What food options are currently available in the canteen of Notre Dame University Bangladesh? The canteen at Notre Dame University Bangladesh provides a diverse range of food choices throughout the day. Breakfast options consist of Parata, vegetables, Dal, and eggs, with variations in the dal and vegetable options. Poached or fried eggs are available as well, accompanied by tea, coffee, and red tea all day long. Additionally, the canteen offers Shingara, Samucha, patties, rolls, and chicken rolls after breakfast. Customized pastry cakes, including birthday cakes, can be ordered. For lunch, the canteen serves a variety of delicious dishes such as Khichuri, Rice Bowl, and occasionally Tehari and Morog Polao. How do you ensure the quality and freshness of canteen food? We take several measures to maintain the quality and freshness of our canteen food. Firstly, we carefully select and purchase raw materials from trusted external sources. We make everything in-house to have better control over the ingredients used. Our primary focus is not just taste, but also the healthiness of the food we serve. How do you maintain affordability for canteen food? We strive to keep prices low and affordable. Despite rising costs, we have made minimal price increases since taking over in 2018. Students have expressed their preference for maintaining affordable prices, even if portion sizes are slightly smaller. Unlike other establishments with high-profit margins, it is challenging to achieve even a 10% profit in the canteen. We continuously make efforts to offer affordable options. However, we face challenges with rent and utility bills. If the university addresses the rent issue, it would enable us to maintain affordable prices. Inside the NDUB Canteen with Palash de Gomes What is the plan for the new building's new canteen? The plan for the new building's canteen is to create a modern, diverse, and sustainable dining space that caters to the needs of its occupants. It will offer a variety of food options, comfortable seating, and seek feedback to continuously improve. Are there any plans to introduce a new payment system? Yes, we are considering introducing electronic payment systems such as bKash and Nagad to modernize our payment options. JUNE 15, 2023, 3:30 PM GMT MD. NAIMUL HUDA NDUB BULLETIN 67
