The Umhlanga (Reed) Dance Reed Dance princess
This traditional ceremony takes place in
late August/early September and involves
young maidens who honour the Queen
Mother. Most of the participants are
teenagers, although some of the girls are
younger.
More than 20,000 maidens gather reeds
from specific areas, using them to reinforce
the Queen Mother’s kraal. The day of the
Umhlanga ceremony, which takes place at
the royal residence of Eludzidzini, begins
with their bathing and grooming prior to
appearing before the King and Queen
Mother. The girls wear colourful beaded
skirts with anklets, bracelets and jewellery
and bright sashes. The royal princesses,
who have red feathers in their hair, lead
the maidens to perform before Their
Majesties. This ceremony may be freely
photographed, provided you have a permit
from the Ministry of Information.

The Marula Festival For the past few
years the Marula Festival, which takes
place in Bhuleni in the north and Hlane in
the south of the country during February,
has become an integral part of Eswatini’s
cultural calendar. Graced by His Majesty
the King, together with the Queen Mother
through whose innovation this event came
about, the Marula Festival celebrates the
fruit that grows on the tree of the same
name and the traditional beer from which
it is made. This strong brew is fairly bitter
and therefore an acquired taste that is
thoroughly enjoyed by the Emaswati! The
King and the Queen Mother are presented
with Marula beer from each household, in
keeping with it being a ‘fruit fit for kings.’ An
d only afterwards may Swazis drink their
home brew.
The marula fruit is reputed to be consumed
by elephants when in season, causing
them to become inebriated, although this
is arguable.

Sibhaca Dance
This energetic and colourful dance is
performed by teams of men and is also
popular among young boys at their schools,
who form their own teams and perform for
special occasions. Many of the hotels and
resorts have their own Sibhaca teams to
entertain visitors.

Traditional Medicine & Divination
Traditional healers are seen as physicians,
prophets, priests, diviners and herbalists,
and many of the people consult these
mostly male practitioners. The “inyanga”,
as they are known, inherit their skills from
their fathers and grandfathers and they
hold a senior position in society. Divination
involves throwing bones and interpreting
the patterns into which they fall.

6

The “sangoma” is a traditional diviner
who has been called to the profession.
Generally women, they are consulted to
alleviate physical and mental problems,
attend various ceremonies and act as
counselors. When divining, the sangoma
traditionally relies on spirit possession.

Family Life
Eswatini’s social structure is based on
clans, which have intermingled through
marriage. A class system regulates
marriage and within the aristocracy the
first wife is never the senior one and a
second wife of higher status will always
take precedence. A preferential marriage
arranged by the parents bestows a higher
status on the union, forming a permanent
bond between the two families.
The bridegroom’s family pays “lobola” (a
dowry) in the form of cattle, in keeping
with the status of the bride’s family. A
traditional marriage ceremony may take a
full weekend before the bride is annointed
to indicate that the union has taken place.
The rights of fatherhood are acquired
through lobola and if no cattle have been
given, any child born of the union remains
within the mother’s family.
Discipline and family responsibility are
imparted to children from an early age and
the authority of the father is respected and
obeyed.
Boys enter regiments in which they train
with their peers, developing with the same
group throughout life, and members of the
regiments are expected to support each
other. Only when a young man achieves
mature warrior status may he consider
courtship as his earlier responsibilities
involve participation in national projects
and rituals.
Old age is treated with reverence within the
culture.

The Eswatini Flag
The Eswatini flag, which was introduced in
1967, comprises a black and white shield
on a bright background of blue, yellow and
red. The shield depicts racial harmony and
is also part of the weaponry of the “Sotja”
(soldier) Regiment that served in World
War II. The blue represents the sky; the
yellow is for gold, or the country’s mineral
wealth; the red depicts the rich fertile soil
of Eswatini.

The National Coat of Arms
The lion (Ingwenyama) represents the King
and the elephant (Indlovukazi, or great
she-elephant) depicts the Queen Mother.
Both are supporting a Swazi shield.
Above the shield is the King’s crown of
feathers, which is worn during the Incwala
Ceremony. At the bottom is the national
motto “Siyinqaba” - we are the fortress.

Pigg’s Peak Area

Gold deposits were first recorded in the
Pigg’s Peak area during modern times in
1872 and in 1884 a gold-bearing reef was
discovered in the hills to the west by the
prospector, William Pigg, after whom the
town is named. Although gold was mined
until 1954 and was successful, the venture
never really took off.
Today, forestry is the main industry in the
area while tourism has grown since the
development of the Maguga Dam with a
number of attractions, including fishing
and the establishment of Maguga Lodge,
among others. This is the major route into
Eswatini from the world-famous Kruger
National Park and the hotels and lodges
in the area are ideal stopovers for visitors.

ochre to smear on objects or people to signify
fertility, purity and sanctity. Specularite,
a glistening black oxide or iron, was also
among the diggings and was used to ward
off evil or as a cosmetic.
The primitive miners confined their
work to the mountain’s summit for fear
of the great horned snake, the god of
the underworld, who lived at its heart.
Thousands of artifacts have been excavated
from the site (today known as the Lion’s
Cavern) over recent years and radio-carbon
testing of charcoal nodules has established
that this is indeed the earliest known mine in
the world.

Trail” is a unique excursion. The rock derives its name from the
custom of a century ago, when wrong-doers accused of crimes
such as witchcraft and murder were made to walk to the summit
and plunge to their deaths. This venture inevitably required some
assistance from the Swazi warriors who accompanied them on the
ascent and, understandably, a prod from a spear to facilitate the
downward journey. Happily, this custom is no longer practised!

NATURE RESERVES
Hlane Royal National Park near Simunye in northern Lubombo
and Mkhaya Game Reserve near Siphofaneni are part of Big
Game Parks (see advert IFC). www.biggameparks.org.
Hlane features the most southern-nesting marabou storks and the
highest density of tree-nesting vultures in Africa. It is also home to
lion, rhino, elephant and leopard.
Yesteryear accommodation is available and game viewing includes
self-drive, 4x4 Land Rovers, guided mountain biking and unique
guided walks. Hlane holds great cultural significance for the
Swazi people and Hunter’s Rock, which is in the park, is where
King Sobhuza II, father of the present King, saw his last lion in
Swaziland.
Mkhaya is famous for close encounters with big game, including
Swaziland’s only black rhino and buffalo. It is a bush-lovers’ dream
with opportunities for guided open 4x4 viewing and walking trails.
Accommodation is in semi-open, luxury stone cottages and meals
are enjoyed around the cheerful camp fire. Day trips are also
available.

The Mbuluzi and Mlawula Nature Reserves merge with Hlane
in the northern area, forming part of the Lubombo Conservancy.
In the southern section of Mlawula, a National Trust Commission
reserve, is the unique Magadzavane Lodge. This reserve is famed
for its groves of cycads and ironwood trees.
The privately owned Mbuluzi Nature Reserve offers beautiful
and diverse bushveld with luxury self-catering lodges and a rustic
campsite. Visitors may drive, walk and cycle along the trails while
enjoying the diverse species of animals and birds. Fly fishing may
be done in the reserve. www.mbuluzi.com.

In the south near Nsoko, just over 30 km from the Lavumisa
border is Nisela Safaris, which nestles at the foot of the Lobombo
Mountains.

Shiselweni
Region

The rural and sparsely populated Shiselweni
area runs across the southern section of
Eswatini and features spectacular scenery.
It is in this area that the spectacular Grand
Valley Road begins. The main town of
Nhlangano (previously Goedgegun) was
founded as a centre for buying and selling
farming supplies and farm produce during
the 1920s, when the British government
bought Goedgegun Farm from one G.M.
Rudolph.

In 1947, Britain’s King George VI,
accompanied by Queen Elizabeth and
the princesses Elizabeth and Margaret,
famously met King Sobhuza II there to
thank him for Eswatini’s war effort. To
commemorate this occasion, the town
was subsequently renamed Nhlangano,
or meeting place. Very much a rural town,
Nhlangano’s main centre of entertainment
is the hotel of the same name, and there
are also several B&Bs in the area. About
28 km to the north is the picturesque village
of Hlathikhulu, where the breathtaking
Grand Valley begins. (See Scenic Route
5, Rural Grandeur page ….). This sleepy
but pleasant village has a small hotel and
a B&B.

Shiselweni is where Christianity was first
introduced to Eswatini, when the Methodist
Weslyan Mission was established in
1844. The missionaries were welcome by
King Mswati II with a gift of a fat ox in a
gesture of friendship. The King accepted
God’s Word, keeping the scroll (Bible) at
his residence and granting permission to
spread the Word but with the proviso that
no attempt should be made to change
Swati customs, culture and traditions.

The Rev. J. Allison built a mission school
at Sankolweni, believed to be the first in
the country, which was later moved to
Mahamba where it still stands.

On the way to Mahamba Gorge, between
Nhlangano and the Mahamba border, is
the Gothic style Methodist church built
in 1912 and the country’s oldest intact
place of worship. It has been thoughtfully
restored and preserved and a display board
outlines the establishment of Christianity in
Eswatini.

will be developed as an alternative to
unsustainable use of natural resources in
some of the project communities. These
may include eco-tourism, developing
participatory strategies for the control of
alien invasive plant species, wetlands
protection to derive other forms of
economic value, and establishing and
strengthening indigenous plant species
nurseries to allow for their reintroduction.

Eswatini’s
Scenic Routes

While the routes outlined in this chapter are
generally suitable for ordinary cars, some
of the gravel or dirt sections, indicated
in white on the maps, may require high
clearance or 4x4 vehicles in wet weather.
You will need binoculars, a camera and
sun screen (even in winter) before setting
out on these routes and wear comfortable
clothing and shoes that are suitable for
walking in case you want to explore by foot.

of conservation land, where the three
nature reserves of Hlane, Mlawula and
Mbuluzi merge to form the Lubombo
Conservancy. These reserves do not
require prior booking for day visits although
it is advisable to reserve accommodation in
advance. Hlane is home to the kingdom’s
largest herds of game, including four of
the Big Five. Mlawula, set at the foothills
of the Lubombo Mountain, has intriguing
flora, including cycad species that are
indigenous to Eswatini, as well as ancient
iron wood trees.
The route continues on to Simunye and
Mhlume, whose vast sugar estates form
the Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation.
Just north of Simunye near Maphiveni
is the community run Shewula Mountain
Camp, set atop the Lubombo Mountain with
stunning views and offering a wonderful
experience of nature, as well as Swazi
tradition and culture. This journey ends at
Tshaneni and the Lomahasha/Namaacha
border.

THE LUBOMBO ROUTE
Linking South Africa, Eswatini and
Mozambique and representing regional
cooperation between the three countries,
this is one of the most popular tourist
routes in the region. Broadly, the Lubombo
Route runs between the Kruger National
Park and Durban, and enables tourists to
experience a choice of three options, each
with its own highlights and stories. Two of
these incorporate Eswatini. The first starts
at either the Matsamo/Jeppes Reef border
or the South African town of Barberton in
the north-west, going on to Pigg’s Peak,
Ngwenya and through the Ezulwini Valley,
then on to Big Bend and the Lavumisa/
Golela border with South Africa. The second
option begins at Mananga in the northeast
and follows the Lubombo Conservancy as
outlined under Scenic Route 6. It goes on
to Big Bend before linking with South Africa
at the Lavumisa/Golela border.
