STRONG TRADITION
Cornwall has a long tradition of producing great junior squash players; Jamie
Moxom, Katie Brickell, Rory Brickell, Joel Brickell, Jon Newton, Ben Macdonald and
most recently Jared London.
All have been ranked in the top ten in England and have gone on to represent
their County and Region with honours. Joel and Jared narrowly missed-out on
playing for England as juniors.
NEW PLATFORM
Today we have a unique opportunity to build a new platform for squash in
Cornwall.
Jack Mahon (ranked 4) and Louis Murray (ranked 15) at Under 13s have the
potential to compete at the highest level nationally and internationally and
ultimately play for England.
Both players could become squash role models for other Cornwall juniors who
may not have not considered squash as an elite sport and one in which Cornwall’s
excellent sports junior boys and girls can excel.
Cornwall squash is looking for sponsorship commitment from the Cornish
Community to firstly, allow Jack and Louis to reach their full potential and
secondly, take Cornwall Junior squash to the next level of access and excellence.

Jack Mahon and Louis Murray at the British Junior Championships COMMITMENT
To have a chance of reaching their goals and playing for England, Louis and Jack
know they need to work harder than most juniors of their age.
The tournament schedule for the 2017-18 season (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum
tournaments) has no venue in the South West. The nearest venue is Edgbaston (a
535 mile round trip).
In the 2016-17 season Jack Mahon and Louis Murray travelled over 23,000 miles
between them (each travelling an average of 250 miles every weekend) playing
the top English tournaments to improve their squash by consistently pitting
themselves against the best in the country.
This was a total of 55 nights in hotels and 45 tournaments. Additionally,
throughout the year there were five days at England Squash Aspire training and
Louis played the Scottish Junior Open (finishing 5th) and came 14th in the Dutch
Junior Open (the 2nd placed British player).
“It was an absolute pleasure to get on court and meet the
boys. If only everyone shared their enthusiasm for our sport
it would be front & back pages every day! ”
Nick Matthew OBE - Ex World No 1 and 3 x World Open winner

Jack Mahon and Louis Murray before playing Cameron Pilley and Nick Matthew WHAT IT TAKES
Jack and Louis are committed to doing whatever it takes to take their squash
to the next level. This year they trained at least 5 times a week (with two 7am
sessions). Their trajectory has been meteoric. Louis and Jack’s success in the
rankings is predicated on them continuing to play every Platinum, Gold and Silver
tournament throughout the year.
WSF European Rankings (Louis is currently ranked 40th in Europe) are based on
juniors playing a number of European tournaments and we have focussed on 6
tournaments that will boost their rankings, expose them to the top players in the
world and give them the experience and exposure to compete for a place on the
England Development Programme (pathway to playing for England).
It is worth noting that none of the costs for either the Aspire or England
Development Programme are covered by England squash.
“Having been on court with Jack and Louis earlier this year,
it was great to see how enthusiastic and keen they are to
learn and improve their squash. I was extremely impressed
with both their talent and their drive to become better
players. Both boys show a real love for the game.”
Cameron Pilley - Australian player, World No 11, Worlds Double Champion

Louis Murray and Jack Mahon interviewed by BBC Spotlight COMMITMENT
By helping Louis and Jack reach their potential at such an early stage in their
squash career we believe there is a unique opportunity to capitalise on our two
most promising juniors. The boys will become young ambassadors for both
the game and junior squash in Cornwall and their success will help create the
foundations of a centre of excellence in Cornwall that will attract talent and have
pathways to develop that talent.
CORNWALL SQUASH ACADEMY
At every tournament Jack and Louis compete against a host of brilliant juniors
who are part of the Manchester Squash Academy (MSA) , based at the National
Squash Centre and sponsored by Unsquashable. Both Louis and Jack regularly
beat the MSA juniors, despite those juniors having a number of travelling coaches
supporting them through each stage of the tournament. It is our aim to develop a
Cornwall Squash Academy to ensure that squash in Cornwall is both successful
and sustainable.
“Cornish squash is a beacon of light, offering an array of
opportunities to children in the community from beginners
to national levels. It’s all inclusive attitude will reap the
rewards in the coming years.”
