Sherwood Forest Faire 2016
The 7th annual Sherwood Forest Faire is a medieval shire filled with magic and history.
All things are possible in this faerytale village set in Robin Hood’s own legendary forest.
The year is A. D. 1195, and Robin Hood and his merry band along with the
villagers of Nottinghamshire have rejoiced all this year to be blessed with their new
Queen Berengaria who good King Richard did wed one year ago. But
Richard’s ally, King Phillip of France has spent this last year fuming over

negotiations and celebrations going on in the forest between common folks, merchants, battling knights, and mystical forest
creatures, too. This day you shall encounter pirates, knights, tinkers, jesters, royalty, beggars, and a myriad of fantastical
faery folk. Medieval bards and players have come to fill the stages of the forest with music, juggling, magic, and storytelling;
and the market is filled with crafters and tradesmen of the shire, plying their crafts of unique wares to sell at the long-
awaited faire. There are hand-made crafts of clothing, jewelry, weaponry, leatherwork, and much more for shopping.
And ye shall not want for sustenance, for there be plenty to eat, drink, and be merry about at Sherwood Forest Faire
Sherwood’s Community of Volunteers
Sherwood Forest Faire wishes to thank our community of volunteers, both patron and participant, who have contributed
their time and energy to make all aspects of this event come to life. There are those who take leadership in marketing initiatives,
organizing events like parades, pub crawls, and conventions; and there are many more who attend these events, bringing the magic
of Robin Hood’s village with them. Sherwood is also blessed to have dozens of diligent volunteers who help to distribute printed
materials and hang posters. And of course there are thousands of you who continually support Sherwood Forest Faire on
social media, posting and sharing pictures and stories from the faire and attending our year-round events.
Sherwood must also thank those who have actually invested their blood, sweat and tears in taming the forest where we love to
celebrate together. Many a Saturday morning here has been filled with early risers, ready to pitch in moving brush, cleaning
trash, painting and staining structures, and helping out with any projects the faire may be working on. There are also a few of
you who have coordinated the efforts of these helpers, and your support is also greatly appreciated. And quite often there are
super heroes who volunteer for days and even weeks on end, doing chainsaw work, building, driving tractors, making maps,
painting signs and many other valuable tasks to help the grounds crew maintain and improve these beautiful fairegrounds.
And we must also recognize those who have donated building materials, plants and trees, costume pieces, photographs
for publications, and of course those of you who support our entertainers and vendors with your generous tips and
eclectic tastes in art. We at Sherwood Forest are in awe of the barn-raising spirit of giving that our community
has shown to us and to each other. Individually we all make a difference, but together we make magic!

Sherwood Forest Faire 2016
The story of Robin Hood and his merry friends continues in A. D. 1195. The Merry Friends of
Sherwood Forest have kept peace in the shire, despite the constant underhanded dealings of Prince
John and the Sheriff of Nottingham. Sadly the Sheriff’s beloved wife has grown weary of life in
Sherwood Forest, and has fled to another land, leaving the Sheriff grumpier than ever, and determined
to take his frustrations out on the peasants of Sherwood Forest. Good King Richard has spent this
year honeymooning at Nottingham castle with his new bride, Queen Berengaria, but duty has weighed
heavily on him of late, for he must make amends with his longtime ally Philip II of France, who arrives
this day to negotiate a treaty between nations. King Richard must also give an ear to King William of
Scotland, who shall arrive with some unexpected demands of his own. Robin Hood and friends will
be busier than ever, making sure that these foreign monarchs are not persuaded by Richard’s enemies to do him harm. As all these powers
gather, it appears that a battle of several armies at Nottingham castle is inevitable near day’s end. You’ll find the merry outlaws of Sherwood
Forest on various stages and all around the village throughout the day, with a big finale at Nottingham Castle before the faire day is over.

Once upon a time, Celtic duo known as Brobdingnagian Bards performed coast-

Parties, Celtic festivals, or Sci-Fi Conventions. But, first and foremost, they
were an absolute favorite at Renaissance Faires where they played in rain, shine,
wind and cold, always with high-energy and “rye” Irish wit to make every show a
memorable experience. The Brobdingnagian Bards split paths almost a decade ago,
only to reunite for the 2012 Sherwood Celtic Music Festival, where they announced
a forthcoming recording collaboration. Marc and Andrew no longer perform regularly, but they shall play for you at

Sherwood Forest Summer Camp
Bringing the trades and skills of the Renaissance back to life
Summer Camp Marketplace
H
ow many of us have wondered if we could have been really great at something given
an earlier start? Sherwood Forest Summer Camp attendees have the rare opportunity
to try their hands at many crafts and skills that are no longer taught. Maybe your child is a
natural with a bow. Or, perhaps they are made for the stage but never had a chance to be
in a production before. It is amazing what new things a child could learn when you take
away the everyday distractions of modern technology and put them in a room with a
skilled teacher.

Sherwood Forest Faire 2016
Sherwood Forest Summer Camp hosted over 200 kids ages 7-15. The kids live here in
our medieval village for 1, 2, or 3 weeks. Modern electronics are put away and everyone works
with their hands for the week. Courses included: Blacksmithing, Falconry, Leather Working,
Theater, Swordplay, Archery, Candle Making, Soap making, Hair Braiding, Hat Making,
and Courtly dance. Most importantly, the kids absolutely loved the experience! The Chart below
is an example from our Exit Survey which every student completed. These results are super
exciting for Sherwood Forest Summer Camp! Summer Camp

want to leave. Perhaps it is when you give her a hug for a job well done and she immediately
asks if she could come back next year. Maybe it is that moment when you go get the lovely
crafts she made and she talks incessantly about everything she did over the last six days. Or it
could be the drive back when she will only speak to you in the Queen’s English.
For me, it was when she not only planned next year, but every year thereafter. Telling me
that she wants to be a counselor in training, and when she ages out, then a Counselor.
Sherwood Forest Summer Camp was one of the most fulfilling experiences for my daughter
and I know it will be the same for any child who goes. The staff is amazing and the skills that
they learn are both educational and enjoyable. Who knew learning could be so fun!
The next letter is from another Camper Parent:
Sherwood Forest Summer Camp is a wonderful and enriching experience.
As a homeschooler, it is important to give my children every opportunity I can manage.
This was my daughter’s first “summer camp”, when it opened 2 years ago, and though we were somewhat
wary of the drive (9 hours round trip), it was worth it. These are very knowledgeable, well trained,
friendly people. Parents, if you have never sent your child to summer camp, then you should really
give this one a try. It is so unique, and the festival grounds are lovely… I am so happy that we found
Sherwood Forest Summer Camp for our children.

I have been coming to Sherwood Forest Summer Camp for two years and it’s
very fun and unique. There are fun classes and activities and the surroundings are amazing.
The classes were very unique and the instructors were fun. My favorite class was Archery. I felt like Robin
later, she still uses and loves. In Blacksmithing, I think it’s really cool that you can bend metal into many useful things that we still
use today.
The activities were just as fun as the classes. After a hot day outside, a jump in the pool felt great! One could appreciate the effort
and dangerous work for the performers to put on the spectacular Fire Dance. After five days of practicing and rehearsing, the
whole class put on a play for our parents to see.
The surroundings are one of the things that make Sherwood Forest Summer Camp the unique place it is. I love that you are
outside all day yet a nice, air-conditioned castle awaits you to go to sleep in. One could appreciate that the counselors, instructors,
and staff dress in full Renaissance clothing in 100-degree weather all day. I love that the whole camp is in its own little secluded
Renaissance village. By the end of the week, I’d had enough fun to last me a month. Sherwood Forest Summer Camp was a
truly great experience. To anyone who is interested in Renaissance times, I would highly recommend going there.

Have you ever felt the brush of wind upon your face as you call an owl
to your hand, clashed swords with a combat master, experienced the surge of energy as you perform
onstage in front of hundreds of people, or felt the blistering heat of an open flame in a burning hot forge?
I have. It was during one of the best summers of my life. I got to experience living life in the 12th century… with plumbing.
I attended two masters’ classes with a professional falconer, learned to pass to a bird to another person and control a bird of prey
with a block of wood. Later in the week, I held and flew multiple birds to my fellow campers and my experienced instructor.
I also learned to use falconer’s equipment including jesses, the swivel, hoods and a lure. It was my absolute favorite class of the
action packed week.
Later that same day, I went to my another class that opened my eyes to the wonders of swordplay. I learned about different
swords and fighting techniques from a skilled master. I had the rare opportunity to fight the master, and I even managed to score
more than one hit on my valiant foe. It may not sound like much, but when you experience it you will feel a surge of adrenaline,
like charging into a fearsome battle. I truly felt like the brave knight I’ve dreamed about being since I was a little girl.
I delighted in going to theatre class every morning, where we got to bring to life an enchanting story about greedy villagers and a
magical forest. We determinedly worked throughout the week; memorizing lines, blocking, creating props, and collaborating with
each other and the endlessly fun instructors to create an unforgettable play flawlessly performed for our parents at the end of the
week.
I absolutely adored Blacksmithing. The open flames licking my fireproof glove, the heat on my face in the cool summer breeze, and
the beauty of the dancing ashes as they float to the ground was a breathtaking experience I will never forget. I learned to forge
a scrap of iron into a beautiful hairpin I still wear. I forged a nail into a sharp sword necklace that I wore all week. Working
with the red hot metal was a thrilling experience.
There are so many more memories that I can recall from that medieval summer, but it would be hard to fit them all onto this
program. I’ll be there next year… will you?

Every summer the Sherwood Forest summer camp is something I look forward
to and think about the entire year. I love it so much that I come to it even though
I live in Guatemala! My favorite things about camp are the fun classes, the friendly counselors, and
the great medieval atmosphere. Sherwood Forest is the best summer camp you’ll ever go to.
The classes at Sherwood Forest Camp are unique and creative. You get to do everything from sword play to falconry.
Personally, blacksmithing is my favorite, because I love the forge. Last year I made a fork and a cool sword necklace.
In candle making, you get to dip your hand in wax to make a wax hand, or make a treasure candle by burying toys in
it while the wax is still hot.
The next great thing about Sherwood Forest Camp is the atmosphere. All the counselors and staff are in unique
period clothing, like cloaks or even armor! They all talk with medieval British accents. You’ll have a great time turning
off Merlin’s magic box (computer) and getting off the book of faces (Facebook) to join in a truly medieval atmosphere.
It’s fantastic! For a week or more, all your troubles go away and you are sucked into a magical medieval world of
adventures. Essay Contest
Counselors are one of the best parts of camp. They are always helpful and provide a good friend to talk to. They are Marketplace
certainly energetic, and show spirit for their group of campers. They get to know all the kids personally, and go above
and beyond expectations of a normal counselor. I can’t wait till I can be a counselor or CIT when I get older.
I love Sherwood Forest camp, and suggest it to anybody who loves medieval things, arts and crafts, or just likes to be
outdoors. Sherwood Forest Summer Camp is an unforgettable experience, and you would be missing out on a lot if
you don’t come. It is the outdoor, medieval adventure of a lifetime!

Knight’s Academy Marketplace
Sherwood Knights Academy (SKA) seeks to bring chivalry back to life. In modern times, Chivalry is defined
as “the combination of qualities expected of an ideal knight, especially courage, honor, courtesy, justice,
and a readiness to help the weak”. We define Chivalry quite similarly, but our 5 keystones are: Courage,
Honor, Integrity, Loyalty, and Strength (both physical and mental). We are training Squires to be Knights;
to live these values everyday regardless of their future profession.
Our squires escape from Modernity (e.g., very limited use of electronics) and enter a time of Olde where they
awake early to feed the horses, then ride, train, rest, train more, read, and live the life of a medieval squire
for a weekend, week, month, or indefinitely. The program is tailored to every single Squire’s capabilities
and we can accept Squires as young as 10 years old.
Sherwood Knights Academy currently has 3 full time Squires, meaning the program is currently
active every week. Consequently, scheduling is very flexible. You can choose almost any weekend,
week, or month to join the Program. Initial inquiries regarding your ideal dates can be emailed to:
[email protected]
Weekends only: $75/day or $150/weekend
Seven day week: $475
Monthly: $1499
Pricing includes meals, lodging, books,
supplies, and training.
