Dear Friends,
Tonight we come together to celebrate community, our library, and the magic of the
holidays. It is because of your support that OWL is one of the top-ranked libraries in
the state and Festival one of our most anticipated events.
This year’s dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly to prepare for tonight. Their
efforts have once again created a wide selection of spectacular online and silent
auction items. We offer you one-of-a-kind experiences, extraordinary party events,
beautiful trees and wreaths, and fabulous items of every sort. We hope you find
many things to bid on for yourself or others.
By participating in tonight’s activity, in addition to finding unique holiday gifts or
personal treasures, you are also supporting the library and our community. Over
50% of OWL’s annual operating budget must come from private sources. Festival
is part of that private funding. All proceeds from tonight go directly toward library
programs, services and materials.
With our enthusiastic patrons and dedicated staff, it’s no wonder we once again rank
3rd in the state for adult circulation per capita, 6th for public computer usage, and in
the top 5% for children’s program attendance. Every day, more than 200 people walk
through these doors! Thank YOU for using your library and for making it possible
for this outstanding staff to provide excellence in library services to everyone in our
community, every day!
We appreciate your generosity and wish you a wonderful holiday season filled with
joy!
Sincerely,
Colette Boyd

10:00 am
Lunch for 20
John Newton and local historian Peter Vermilyea, author of Hidden
History of Litchfield County, will lead a walk to historic industrial sites
along the Shepaug River in Litchfield. Relics of the past and features of
the forested landscape will allow us to reconstruct some of what once
transpired on the land and yield a better understanding of how early
settlers made a living from this rugged terrain.
Participants will pass the remains of saw mills, turnpikes, dams and iron
forges dating back to the Revolutionary War! Guests will then proceed
to the nearby Newton’s party barn where they will have an opportunity
to discuss what they’ve seen and examine the owner’s collection of
historical iron tools and other artifacts.
Having worked up an appetite, hikers will be treated to the highly
regarded “Pig Newtown,” a savory pulled pork delight, and plentiful
libations. Interesting company in this beautiful setting will round out
a fascinating day. The 2.3 mile loop is of moderate difficulty, so wear
your hiking boots!

pine grove. An early evening dinner with a delicious nod to foraged
edibles and local foods will round out this memorable day.

Beirut
Saturday, August 8, 2020
6:00 pm
Dinner for 30
Following WWI, French controlled Beirut, Lebanon developed a
sophisticated cafe culture and chic fashion sense that led to its
nickname, the “Paris of the Middle East”. By the 1950’s, the jet set

into that vibrant period of time to experience the thrill of this exotic
locale and its multi ethnic foods flavored by the French connection.
Having spent decades living in the Middle East, your hosts will share
their deep knowledge of the country and its culture.
Upon arrival, you will stop at the bar for a cocktail and meander
through the gardens & paths to the river. Later gather on the lawn
while enjoying traditional foods known as “mezze”. These small bites
and dips are designed to stimulate the appetite with flavors influenced
from the Mediterranean and Middle East. Think baba ghanoush, spiced
hummus, filled pastries known as sambouseks, and more.
A full dinner will include special plates with desserts such as baklava
or creamy mafroukeh to round off this incredible feast. In the course
of this special evening, you will enjoy some entertaining aspects of
Beirut, whether it be in the form of music, dance, poetry or all! This
