Hi,
I have to compile health tips from peers in order to produce a poster for
Science Week. Can you help by sharing one thing you do to maintain good
health, and why it’s important? What equipment is needed? I don’t want to

Subject: My Health Tip
Hi Derrick,
I’d love to lend a hand!
I stay healthy by exercising. I go for a jog thrice a week. It helps
strengthen my muscles, improve my cardiovascular fitness and maintain
my ideal weight. Besides that, jogging boosts my endorphins which helps
me to manage stress
The equipment I need is a pair of trainers and comfortable exercise
clothes. Sometimes, I bring my phone along with me so I can listen to my
favourite songs. I usually jog alone but every now and then, my father joins
me.
Break a leg!

Question 2
Schools everywhere have turned to online learning during the pandemic. Your
teacher has asked you to write an essay about your experience with online
learning.
In your essay, you should write about:
Whether you enjoy it and why
The advantages and disadvantages of online learning
Whether you prefer online or classroom learning in the future
Write your essay using all of the notes.
Online learning has become widely accepted and sought-after in recent
years. Students from all walks of lives including myself are finding that the
traditional brick-and-mortar style of learning does not fit our needs. Personally, I
reap the benefits of online learning.
The appealing aspect of online learning is - flexibility. With the convenience
of the internet, we can learn smoothly at our own pace. For instance, there will be
days where we feel under the weather therefore hindering our learning progress.
With online learning, we get to re-watch recorded lessons and catch up efficiently.
Consequently, procrastination is inevitable for students as nobody is there to
discipline them. Hence, strict supervision is required.
With the unprecedented virus of Covid-19, it is safe to say that online learning
is the best option we have for now. In the future, I would pick classroom learning
because it has certain plus points that online teaching simply cannot replace.
PART 3

School National Day Celebration
Write about:
What were the activities held on that day?
What were your feelings?

Write a report to your school Principal answering these questions.
Write your report.
National Day Celebration in Our School
This year or school held a grand National Day celebration on 31st of August
2012. It was held in our school field.
The event kickeed off at 8:00 a.m. All the students and parents were
already gathered around the field. The president of the Parent-Teacher
Association officiated the opening ceremony. Then we had a march past. The
school band led the march past. Members of the various uniformed units likely,
The Police cadet, KRS and Red Crescent Society also took part. The students
marched steadily past us in neat rows. They looked extremely smart and
patriotic.
After the march ended, it was time for the raising the flag ceremony. This
was done by our admirable head prefect, Azlan Hashim. The school band played
the National Anthem as the flag was raised. Then, we also sang several patriotic
songs.
This was followed by some cultural performances at the school hall. There
were traditional dances performed by the students. Their costumes were
remarkable and the performances were stupendous. The students had clearly
ran the extra-mile to deliver these performances.
It is safe to say we had a whale of a time. This year's National Day
celebration was truly a successful one. It made us to learn to appreciate the
wonderful country we're living in and made us proud to be Malaysians.
Question 4
Write and submit a review of a desert outlet that you have currently visited and
enjoyed.
Talk about the food and whether you would recommend it.
Good news to all the sweet-tooths out there! The dessert shop, Soy-tisfying
has taken Malaysia by storm as it serves a tantalising dessert that no Malaysian
can resist. Soy-based desserts have a rich history with Malaysians as we used to
savour them in night markets. Soy-tisfying dessert shops specialise in soy-based
desserts and there is nothing more satisfying than a scoop of Tau Fu Fah!
Their best-seller, the Soy-tisfying signature, comes with made-from-scratch
bouncy sweet potato and taro balls lying on a bed of silky soft Tau Fu Fah. It is also
garnished with toppings such as red or black sesame paste. Once it touches your
tastebuds, it truly packs a punch! What catches my eye is their Tau Fu Fah
cheesecake that is available exclusively during the weekends! Not to mention, we
can choose from an extensive range of toppings such as grass jelly, gingko nuts
and so forth. An added bonus is when you opt for takeaway services, it will be
packed in an aesthetically pleasing box which is Instagram worthy!
As aforementioned, I would recommend it to every Malaysian out there. It is
made with top-notch ingredients and highly addictive! The price point reflects the
quality - and it is worth every penny! If I were you, I would not miss it for the world!

Keeping the Neighbourhood Safe
By, Hamison Jack Anak Hendry
Recently, our neighbourhood has experienced a spate of robberies and this is
a serious matter for all of us. It is for all the residents and the authorities to take
action to keep the neighbourhood safe. What can we do as a responsible resident?
Firstly, we could form a neighbourhood watch group. We can then take turns
patrolling the neighbourhood at night. A whatsapp group or even an app could be
created for all the residents to refer to. We can disclose safety or burglary
incidents on this app so that the others will know what to look out for.
In order to make the neighbourhood safer, the lighting in the neighbourhood
should be improved. Apart from more street lights, each household too should
turn their porch lights in the evenings, and install motion-detector lights in the
back or at the sides of the house.
Another way to keep the neighbourhood safe is by being friendly with our
neighbours. We can offer ourselves as a resource in case of emergencies or help
needed on other residents’ end. In a friendly environment, neighbours could easily
tell each other to look out for each other’s houses when away from home.
It is important that all the residents cooperate in order to keep the
neighbourhood safe. If everyone works together, the neighbourhood will be safer.
Question 6
Your teacher has asked you to write a story for a school magazine. The story must
have the title.
A Snatch Theft
Your story should include:
A description of the incident
How the snatch thieves were caught
As the maxim goes, “Low crime does not mean no crime”. A concerning issue
in Malaysia, some instances of snatch theft lead to casualties, when the person
holding onto the handbag has been dragged by the motorbike or through acts of
violence. The police have always reminded Malaysian citizens to be wary of our
surroundings at all cost. Criminals spring into actions at the most unexpected
timings. Never had I ever expected to witness a snatch theft unfold right in front of
my eyes.
Like any other sweltering day, sweat broke out all over my body and trickled
down my back. A businesswoman was only a few inches away from me, dressed to
the nines and talking on the phone. I was running errands for my Mother when out
of nowhere, an ear-shattering scream through my eardrums. Horror-stricken two
men in black balaclavas whizzed out and started attacking the businesswoman.
As audacious as the day, the pillion rider lunged forward and tried to snatch
the lady’s Louis Vuitton handbag forcefully. Tugging her bag with brute force, the
lady did not surrender but screaming at the top of her lungs. “Help me! Someone!
Help!” I stood rooted to the ground as I knew I was defenceless.
Lady luck was on our side, two burly onlookers came to her rescue. They
knocked both the criminals down by smacking their hapless backs with their fists.
In that split second, both snatch thieves fell onto the road with a thunderous thud.
As weak as kittens, both of the snatch thefts were pinned by the burly men.
Instantaneously, I dialled for 999. Narrating to the police of what I had witnessed,
all parties were relieved that nobody was brutally injured.
All was well when the police arrived in the nick of time and apprehended both
thieves. It turned out that both thieves were fugitives as countless innocent
women had fallen prey to their violent acts. Their modus operandi was targeting
working women who carried expensive bags. The lady heaved a sigh of relief and
thanked all of us for our heroic responses.
After this distressing experience, I came to realise that caution is the parent
of safety. This is due to the fact that danger could strike at us anytime. That is all
the more reason why we should be on our guard no matter rain or shine.
Nevertheless, let’s continue to aim for a safer future for all Malaysian citizens by
joining our efforts to reduce the rates of snatch theft.

Question 1
Dear Lucy,
I am sorry to disturb you at this time when you’re preparing for your mid-
year exam. I am very worried about my depressed son, Ben. You are his best
friend, please talk to him. I am sure he will be willing to voice out his
problems with you. I suspect it is cyberbullying…but he refuses to talk
about it.
Ben’s Mother
Write a reply to Ben’s mother after you talked to Ben in about 80 words. Write your
answer below.
To: [email protected]
Subject: What Ben needs
Hi Aunt,
Thanks for having faith in me.
Thanks to you, I recently met up with Ben. he opened up to me in no
time about being cyberbullied. The fact that he poured his heart out to me,
meant he needed support and help from his family. Ben needs his family to
back him up no matter rain or shine. Fortunately, the problem is still minor,
Hence, you should nip it in the bud and help him get over it.
Bear in mind to talk to him gently. With love and encouragement, he
will be able to get his life back on track. Don’t worry! Do get back to me if
you need further help.
Ben’s best friend,
Lucy
PART 2
You must answer the question. Write your answer in 125-150 words in an
appropriate style.
Question 2
Your class has been discussing what they use the internet for and your teacher
has asked you to write an essay about the importance of the internet to students.
In your essay, you should write about:
• how the internet is important
• reasons for your choice
• when you usually use the internet
Write your essay using all the notes and giving reasons for your point of view
Nowadays, internet access is no more a luxury but a necessity in our
everyday lives. For students, the internet is important for them to get information
related to examinations, like examination results and also for their studies.
As for me, I use the internet to do research and to relearn the topics taught in
school. There are many interesting documentaries and videos related to the topics
I learn at school that I can watch or download for free. This helps me to have a
better understanding of these topics.
The best time for me to use the internet is at night when my parents are at
home so that I can ask for their assistance when I cannot find the information I
want. Furthermore, they are in the know as to which websites I go to and
understand the purpose I surf the internet.
In conclusion, the internet is important to students as one of the mediums
for studying and not solely for leisure.
PART 3
Write an answer to one of the questions 3-6 in this part. Write your answer in 200-
250 words in an appropriate style on this question paper. Put the question number
in the box at the top of the answer space.
Question 3
Your school recently organised a charity run. As the Secretary of the organising
committee, write a report for the Principal about the event.
Write your report based on the notes below:
Charity Run
Date
Time
Location
Purpose - to raise funds for the local orphanage
Length / Duration of run
Number of participants
Winners
Incidents - some participants lost their belongings during the
event
- some participants sustained minor injuries
Charily Run 2013
SMK Bukit Tinggi annual Charity Run for 2013 was held on 18th September. The
event was originally scheduled to start at 6.30 a.m. but the flag-off only took place
at 7 a.m. due to the rain. Like the past years, the run started and ended at the
school field.
The purpose of this year's Charity Run is to raise funds for the local orphanage.
Participants were charged a RM15 registration fee that includes some mineral water
and a t-shirt.
The entire route of the run was 10.5 kilometres. A total of 578 students
throughout the school took part in the event. Nur Amalina from Form 5B came out
first, followed by Boon Keat from 5A, second and Ganesh Lingam from 4D, third. The
winners were presented with medals and hampers by the President of the Parent –
Teacher Association, Datuk Rahim Mahmud.
While the event was successfully completed, there were some incidents that
occurred during the run. Two participants lost their belongings. Both of them left
their bags at the side of the field despite being repeatedly reminded by the
organisers not to do so. Participants were advised to leave their belongings in the
hall next to the field where there were students on duty. Fortunately, they only lost
small amounts of money and some snacks.
Apart from that, some participants also sustained minor injuries. This was
due to the fact that they did not do warm-up exercise before running. As a result,
they suffered cramps halfway through the run. They were immediately attended
to by the medical team on standby and recovered after a short rest.
From this year's event, it is clear that there are still room for improvement
in the organisation of this event. For example, more refreshment stands should
be made available throughout the course of the run. This will ensure that
participants are well hydrated while running. Besides, more volunteers should be
brought in to control and direct traffic where the route meets with the main
street. This will ensure the safety of the participants as well as the safety of road
users passing by the area.

Pearl of the Orient
Penang is one of the most fascinating states which I had the opportunity to
visit during the last school holidays. It was my fifth visit to Penang, yet there were
still so many things to do and places to visit. And of course, a variety of mouth-
watering food to eat.
In Penang, there are many touristy places like Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si Temple,
and Gurney Drive. The most enjoyable place I visited on this trip was the Made In
Penang Interactive Museum located at Weld Quay, Georgetown.
Made in Penang Interactive Museum displays interesting 3D artwork. For
example, there is a picture of a huge 3D snake slithering out from the frame of the
Snake Temple picture. This unconventional and impressive museum allows
visitors to touch and get close to the artwork. My family and I had great fun taking
pictures here.
Another beautiful place that I highly recommend visiting is the Batu Ferringhi
Beach which is about 11 kilometres from the city centre. It is a popular destination
for local and foreign tourists alike. My family and I will head to the beach every
time we are in Penang. If you love water sport activities, like jet skiing and
parasailing, this is the best place for you.
To end, Penang is a wonderful place to spend your holidays. If you are
planning for a holiday, do include Penang in your list. You will undoubtedly enjoy
your time spent there.

My Ideal Classroom
By Janette Wu
My Ideal Classroom School is said to be a second home to students. For me,
school is definitely my second home. Apart from the usual school hours, I have to
attend extra classes and co-curricular activities in the afternoon. Therefore, I
dream of having a classroom which makes me feel comfortable when I’m at
school.
My ideal classroom should have air conditioning, an interactive board and
internet access. Due to Malaysia’s hot weather, having an air conditioner would
reduce the humidity and discomfort. Having an interactive board and internet
access could aid students and teachers in the learning and teaching process.
Imagine how fun learning would be.
Besides, I would like to have new desks and chairs. The damaged notice
board in the classroom needs to be replaced as well. There are a lot of holes on
the board, so my classmates and I cannot post notices and messages. I would
recommend a 21st century furniture upgrade, for example flexible desks and
chairs that you can easily move to suit the activities or lessons on that day. I think
it would be awesome to have them in my classroom.
With the furniture upgrade and improved facilities, my classmates and I can
decorate the room beautifully. My classroom would have a reading corner and
maybe a few lazy chairs for us to relax in.
All in all, this is what my ideal classroom would be like. I know it is impossible
to achieve, but I hope one day it will become a reality.
Question 6
Your teacher has asked you to write a story for a school newsletter. The story
must have the title: Your story should include:
Class Excursion
• a description of the excursion
• benefits of a class excursion
• your feelings
Write your story.
The day had arrived! On that awesome day, Mr Dominic Lester accompanied
twenty of us on our class excursion to the famous seaside. We chartered an air-
conditioned bus. Everybody was in high spirits as we boarded the bus.
On the bus, we sang merry tunes of popular medleys while Lester strummed
away on his guitar with some students. Excitement filled our hearts and everyone
was in a happy mood. After some time, we finally arrived at the seaside. Bouncing
with excitement and enthusiasm, we scrambled out of the bus and rushed for the
sand.
A cool breeze brushed past our cheeks, the sound of waves lapping the rocks
and birds chirping on the branches of trees could be heard everywhere. We built
sandcastles of different shapes and sizes, snapped numerous picturesque views
of collected seashells and cute diminutive pebbles that were scattered on the
seashore. We thoroughly enjoyed the sunshine.
Of course, the lure of the greenish-blue water made us change into our
swimming costumes and we swam to our hearts’ content. We had a whale of time
in the crystal-clear sea water. During these exciting hours of fun and joy, we
hardly noticed that the day was slipping away. We had to bid farewell to the
wonderful place which had provided us with so much fun and pleasure.
During this excursion, we learned about team spirit to set up and clean up
the picnic spot. Living in a community is a skill to be learned and upskilled too. So
going for an outing or an excursion will be a way for us to learn it well.
