Lightload Towels The only towel that is a survival tool

We were at the MAPSE expo in Maryland it
was very hot and I was really sweatingpro-

said to myself I really wish I had a towel. The
I remembered that I stopped by the Light-
load Towel booth and they had given us a
few of their towels to review so I grabbed
one out of the package and I opened it up.
I added a littlewater from my water bottle, it then grew and I unfolded it into a
much bigger hand towel. It worked perfectally at drying me off. I used it the of
the weekend every 10-15 mins wiping off all of the sweat on my forehead, the
back of my neck and hair. This nify product was indeed a real for me. I had hun-
dreds of people I had to speak with and I did not want to look like I was melting
right in front of them. From a prepping standpoint I could not help but think how
great these little suckers are for bugout bags and “EDC” Every Day carry kits.
They take up very little space compared to traditional towels. They Pretty Much
last a long time. They are anit bacterial and it can also be used to help start fires.
The towels are available in all diffrent sizes and for diffrent purposes such as

The owner of the company sent me two of these
whistles to test out and, holy shit!, these things
are really loud.The Storm® All-Weather Safety
Whistle is the loudest whistle on the market. Its
unique patented design allows it to be heard
under water, up to 50 feet, because the sounding
chamber forces all water to be purged when the
whistle is blown. Made in the USA. It’s perfect for
divers, lifeguards, and for recreation! It creates a

clear, high frequency sound, with a
power rating over 75% greater than
other referee and safety whistles.

Tests show that the Windstorm™ whistle produces a sound which is more eas-
ily heard when compared to other popular whistles. Tested by an independent
research team under the most demanding scientific methods, the Windstorm™
competed head-to-head for loudness against the most popular whistles in the
world. Data derived by powering four test whistles at a constant pressure and
strong effort prove its loudness.

They really are the world’s loudest whistles. They have been adopted by security
forces worldwide, the military, police and, more recently, Navy Seals. They are
so powerful they can even be heard underwater. My kids got hold of one of them
and I had to take it away instantly because it was so darn loud to the point where
it is actually dangerous. I also gave one to my daughter-in-law because she is
going away to college and after I saw how effective it really was, I told her to
attach one to her key chain. In the middle of night or even during the day it can
be a very effective deterrent. It is so loud any potential attacker would be scared
away due to the fact that everyone has been alerted. It is also great if you are lost
in the woods and trying to be rescued.

Every survival situation, from a minor power-outage to a major SHTF, has one thing in common. You

are likely to be on your own, or with just a couple of family members at best. Everyone says to join

with others, more eyes to keep watch, taking shifts to keep deer out of the garden and trying to keep

the bad guys out of everything. Yes. A tight, cohesive group would be nice. Many of us though, most

likely, will be bugging out with our immediate family or sheltering in place with that same family. You

will likely have two adults and minor children, more adults if you’re lucky. Your mother-in-law may be

with you if you are less lucky. That’s it. At some point, you will need to rest and sleep. Adrenalin may

help keep you awake for a couple of days, but soon, yourperformance, both physically and mentally,

will suffer, putting your family and your precious supplies at risk. The only way to get some rest with

such a small group is to take advantage of technology, and have IT watch your back. If my family is

forced into a bug-out situation, and we need to stop and rest for the night (or day), it will take about

fiveminutes to form a three hundred sixty degree perimeter around our campsite. Three alarms in

a triangle configuration around our campsite would provide an early warning system if someone is

sneaking around while we are resting. At 2.4 ounces each, carrying a couple tripwire-alarms seems

like a “no brainer”. Whether I use the loud powder-charge or the silent, remote alarm option would

depend upon the situation at hand. The monitor-box weighs just 3.4 ounces. The powder-charges

are dirt cheap at six cents each at Home Depot and Lowes, and they weigh almost nothing. I’ll have

plenty of the powder-charges in my pack or pockets. Six dollars for one hundred “booms” is doable,

even on the tightest budget. If we are able to shelter in place, I plan to use the alarms to protect the

perimeter around my home. I’d like to know that the bad guys are close BEFORE they try to enter

my home. This completely takes away their element of surprise. The alarms can be wire-tied to my

generator, in case someone decides they need the generator more than I. Protecting the barn, stor-

age shed and the like can be accomplished easily by similar methods. The uses for the alarms are

limited only by yourimagination.Another thought exercise involves protecting important perimeters like

the garden from deer. Use the powder-charge to scare deer away, or use the silent alarm option, and

have it wake you inside your home. This gives you the option to shoot the deer from the window rath-

er than scare it away. You can switch back and forth between the silent alarm and thepowder-charge

alarm as often as you like. And, it only takes about thirty seconds to make the change. The optional

waterproof pressure switch can handle 2A @ 12V. That’s enough capacity to ignite flares, blow horns

or activate other devices that could prove beneficial in bad times. The alarms will never wear out, so

it’s a solid long-term tool for the coming hard times. www.vikingtripwire.com

The Survival Group Handbook (formerly known as MAGS: The People Part of
Prepping) is the first and most comprehensive book ever written on the subject
of survival with others. It is designed to walk you through all the steps required
to safely and securely find, and work with other people just like you who realize
that going it alone in a dark world is not an option.

This guide is the instruction manual and reference textbook for the solo survi-
vor, family or national organization regardless of size or mission. By employing
the hard learned lessons carefully researched in cooperation with many active
groups, and applying sociology, history, law and threat analysis, the survivor will
understand what makes a group work, how to build one from scratch, how to fix
one that has become dysfunctional and where to put your group in a hurry.

If you want to put a razor’s edge on your team, understand how to effectively
lead people, increase participation, correct poor group dynamics, and be able
to successfully operate under a multitude of conditions, this book holds all the
keys to your success.

This is really a great book. Our motto at the Disaster Survival Network is “Continu-
ity of community. What we can’t do alone, we can do together.” This book teaches
all about what makes a group work. It teaches leadership skills and teaches the
psychology of how people and groups think during a survival situation. When a
major disaster or catastrophe happens you will soon realize that the authorities
and federal emergency management will be quite busy and will not be coming
to help you anytime soon. You will soon realize it is up to you and your neigh-
bors to help yourselves and each other. This is prefect book to teach about how
to create a functional survival group during and after any “SHTF” scenario.

Dr. Thomas Stoner, DO is
a board certified physician
with more than twenty years
of combined military and
civilian experience in the
areas of NRBC warfare.
Dr. Stoner graduated from
Kirksville College of Osteo-
pathic Medicine; he special-
izes in internal medicine.

September 11th, Hurricane Katrina, Super Storm Sandy...Each of these crisis
situation events resulted in catastrophic disaster for thousands of people. Are
you prepared for when disaster strikes? From the geography of disaster to the
essential medicines you need for a home disaster preparedness kit, “Operation
Survival” is the essential guide to disaster preparedness for you and your family.

This long awaited 200 page medical survival book ranges from allergy to severe
medical emergencies. OPERATION SURVIVAL, written by Dr Tom Stoner, a board
ceritfied Adult Medicine Specialist with over 20 years experience in ER, ICU and
infectious disease medicine and 10 years in the USAF, offers real insight into
medical emergencies and is written in a very understandable fashion so any
reader may gain rapid medical advice.

OPERATION SURVIVAL is written in 14 font so it is easily read, especially in time
of emergent need and has a great index and glossary. This book will answer
many questions but some of the most common are: How long do I treat Anthrax
exposure and how risky is this? Do I need Ibuprofen and Tyelenol and should I
treat a fever? Do I close this wound with suture or allow it to stay open ? What
meds do I need in my Go-Bag ? How long do meds last beyond their expiration
date ? Dr Stoner’s interest in survival medicine was born out of his service in
the USAF and his workings with Smallpox and Anthrax vaccines. He grew up
in the construction industry and realized at a very yound age the need for very
black and white communication that is factual, thruthful and understandable for
all. This book is sure to be one that is kept in your GO-BAG and another at your
bedside for a quick read. The book lays out medicines that are needed and basic
to more indepth information on how to use meds with their risks and benefits.
There is also cross-over information on herbal and naturaopathic remedies.

This was one of the best books I read in a long time. I found many similarities as to
how my wife and first felt when we decided to move out of the city and into the country.
You will not wanted to put this book down.

Like so many other city-dwellers, Cam and Michelle Mather longed for a simpler, qui-
eter life in the country. When they found a century-old farmhouse on 150 acres of land
that was in their price range, they jumped at the chance to make their move. The fact
that the home was “off-grid” with no power or telephone lines connecting it to the out-
side world seemed like a bonus!

Twelve years later their life in the country is not quite as simple as they had envisioned
but it is peaceful. There were more challenges than they could have anticipated as well
as more rewards.

Along the way they installed more solar panels, erected a wind turbine and upgraded and
replaced all of the major components of their off-grid electrical system. They installed a
solar-thermal hot water system, figured out how to have a phone, internet and satellite
TV and kept their home heated with wood cut from their own property. They also carved
out a garden and began growing much of their own food. They acquired many new skills
and knowledge but most importantly they learned to appreciate the value of good neigh-
bors, good books and good manure.

Cam Mather is a writer, publisher and video producer who knows how to equalize batter-
ies and pinch suckers off of tomato plants. Michelle Mather looks after the editing, the
website and the dwindling bank account and keeps Cam calm during times of crisis.

SaveAqua products are designed to promote personal hygiene and preserve water in locations where it
is scarce. Using a SaveAqua tap, any available plastic container can be converted into an efficient water
dispensing device. SaveAqua products are designed to assist with personal hygiene, washing dishes, or
any other task where water conservation is important.

Due to their portability, SaveAqua taps have a wide variety of applications. SaveAqua taps excel in outdoor en-
vironments such as campgrounds, backcountry camping, and even potential emergencies. Though the primary
advantage of the SaveAqua tap is its portability, it is also very simple to use and it is environmentally friendly.

SaveAqua taps are great for maintaining hygiene in the outdoors, including for use during sports team
events, daycare and school field trips. Create your own washing station in places where built in water infra-
structure is lacking to encourage hand washing in order to decrease the spread of germs.

Finally, we talk about fallout. This seems to be everyone’s big concern but all fallout is, is radioactive-
ly charged dirt. If you can wash dirt off of your body you can effectively decontaminate yourself from
fallout. If you have ever watched the weather you already know where fallout will travel. So generally
speaking, with this bomb in DC if you are west, southwest or north of DC you will not get any fallout.
The prevailing winds are from northwest to southeast so if you happen to be southeast of DC it could
be bad. Just know that fallout is dirt sucked up by the blast and the bigger the bomb the more dirt is
sucked up and the further it would travel down wind. If you are not downwind you will NOT get fallout.
It travels with the wind and the bigger heavier pieces fall to the ground first the smaller ones travel
further downwind. Now yes you sometimes get a nor’easter, when the winds are reversed but most
of the time you know in your area how the winds blow from watching the weather, so by no menses
should you bug out for fallout! Even if you maybe in a fallout area don’t run out of your house unless
you know where you are going. You may be running into a fallout area and your running away from
your shielding which is your house. If you have a basement, you already have a fallout shelter that
cuts the amount of radiation you receive from fallout by 90%. Therefore, if the reading outside read-
ing is 100 rads in your basement it will only be 10 rads. If you put a bookshelf and mattress over any
opens it will cut down even further.

That brings me to the big question, “To shelter or not to shelter, that is the question?” Well I don’t
know about you but I have a limited amount of money I can spend on prepper stuff and my wife is my
control rod. A shelter if you do most of the work your self will run around $10,000. I personally don’t
want to be that tied down to a location that I may hesitate to leave it if the time would come that I
should go. This is all on a chance that I may NEVER see any fallout. My personal opinion of shelters
are they are a grave with a door. You need to breath, air must get in, if someone finds that opening
you are done and that simple fact makes them a liability to me. It is a personal choice how everyone
spends his or her prepper dollars and I want to buy everything else before I would ever get a shelter.
This is only my opinion and many others have other opinions. It comes down to your plan, what you
will do and we plan to run and hide. If our house becomes inviable for whatever reason, we are hail-
ing ass. You have this from the expert, if you plan to shelter and wait because of fallout it is better to
move out of the fallout then it is to stay in it. The US Army in the 1980s had an entire manual called
contamination avoidance. WOW, talk about your Captain Obvious! If you can avoid contamination,
you should and if you cannot you should decontaminate just as soon as possible. That was the whole
manual in a nutshell.

Also this is NOT global thermal nuclear war, this is one bomb in DC and how it effects the area and
the country. The blast that I talked about earlier travels out from ground zero about a mile give or take
a few hundred yards. Buildings at a mile will be damaged but standing, all others depending on their
shapes and construction material will be destroyed. If you have seen pictures of Hiroshima and Naga-
saki you know what I am talking about. Remember this is a blast at ground level, if the terrorist fly the
bomb in a small plane high over DC everything I am telling you changes and all the effects are great-
er. The blast travels further, the heat travels further and the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) all have a
great effect. The easiest and most likely deliver means is the Ryder truck we talked about.

Heat is the next effect and it travels out from ground zero a little over two miles. Think about how
many hospitals, fire stations, police agencies are in this circle. These are the ones that should come
and help but they are all casualties too. Burn victims are the most labor intensive patient a hospital
could have and there will be some many some people will die simply because they cannot get care.
The only help that could come would be from miles away and they will not be able to respond be-
cause of the third effect, EMP.

5 Large Game 5 Small Game 5 Home Defense

It is the age old question which weapon should I choose for hunting large game, small game and finally for home

protection? We will list the top 5 in each category based on sales reliability and overall use by the public at large. Is
there one weapon which will do all three? With the help of our good friend Chad L Fox of Fox’s Firearms we are
going to determine just that (Chad’s contact information is listed below) we highly recommend him. First we will
give a brief description of each as well as list a direct link to the manufactures page so you can go check out the in
depth features. Second we will give you the Disaster ad Survival Networks personal choices we have ex military and
hunters on staff. Third we will pick our overall favorite the weapon. We believe can accomplish all three.

The top 5 rifles for hunting would depend on what you’re hunting. For deer, which is the most
common big game, would be the following

1. Remington 700 series (700 ADL BDL CDL, 770, 783)
The Model 700™ family has evolved into the most diverse rifle line available to today’s hunter and shooter. There
are stainless, rich blued and matte finishes to choose from with a variety of stock options, including camo and
colored synthetic, American walnut and wood laminate in standard and thumb hole configurations. And the

2. Weatherby Mark V
Gamechanger. That’s how the Mark V® was viewed when introduced by Roy Weatherby in 1958. Today, it re‑
mains firmly positioned as “the world’s strongest bolt action.”From the heaviest magnum loads to the most popu‑
lar standard chamberings, the Mark V handles each with unequaled strength and structural integrity.

hunting and firearms store and ask questions. Try to fire as many of these arms before making a dedicated pur‑
chase.

TOP 5 rifles for hunting small game

This list is based on purchases, and the most popular calibers are .308 & 30-06. I did not include any black powder
rifles. If you are hunting small game, the following shotguns are very popular;
1. Remington 870
If the Model 870™ were introduced today, it would be hailed as a major advance in pump-action shotgun design
- the ultimate in strength, durability, silky-smooth bind-free action, and sleek classical lines.Yet this remarkable
shotgun has been around for almost half a century, and has become the best-selling shotgun of any type in histo‑
ry, with over ten million made.

Sources and features

2. Mossberg 500
After over 50 years and over 10 million and counting–and the only pump action to be declared Mil‑
Spec–the Mossberg 500 has proven to be one of the most versatile and reliable shotgun platforms avail‑
able, offering a model to fit every application, and every user from our households, to law agencies, to
military worldwide.

Sources and features
3. Remington 1100
More than 40 years ago, the Model 1100 forever changed the way American shooters viewed autoloading shot‑
guns. It was the first autoloader to combine the repeat-shot versatility of early-century models with the sleek,
modern lines and handling qualities of revered double barrels. It’s been a field-proved favorite ever since. Its
superb balance, handling, durability and soft recoil from the gas operated action are the foundation of the Rem‑
ington autoloading legacy.

Sources and features
4. Browning Auto
The Browning Automatic 5, most often Auto-5 or simply A-5, is a recoil-operated semi-automatic shotgun de‑
signed by John Browning. It was the first successful semi-automatic shotgun design, and remained in production
until 1998. The name of the shotgun designates that it is an autoloader with a capacity of five rounds, four in the
magazine and one in the chamber. The Browning Auto-5 was the first mass-produced semi-automatic shotgun.
Designed by John Browning in 1898 and patented in 1900,[2] it was produced continually for almost 100 years
by several makers with production ending in 1998. It features a distinctive high rear end, earning it the nickname
“Humpback”. The top of the action goes straight back on a level with the barrel before cutting down sharply
towards the buttstock. This distinctive feature makes it easy to identify A-5s from a distance. A-5s were produced
in a variety of gauges, with 12 and 20 predominating; 16 gauge (not produced between 1976 and 1987) models
were also available. The gun saw military service worldwide between World War I and the Vietnam War.

5. Winchester Super X
Some shooters of Super X3 shotguns are like members of a strange secret society. We don’t say too much
or brag too much. We just go about our business taking more ducks and geese in worse conditions than
the others. Those of us who fit this description know that the Super X3 is clearly the most durable, ro‑
bust, dawn-to-dusk workaholic shotgun there is. It never gives up. It never surrenders. Period. So, next
time you run into a Super X3 owner pry a bit and you will learn a few secrets about the autoloader of the
21st century. Make no mistake, the Super X is the original “Super” autoloader.

Our choices per catagory:

Large game for the large game we choosed the Remington 700. Why well because of price reliability and the various
calibers you ca select from. One of our team owns one and says the reliability is outstandig he has never had a jam
with over 2000 rounds shot. Way to go reminington.

Small game For small game we all agreed upon the same weapon. The Mossberg 500. Not only is it Mil Spec it has
bullet proof reliability. In addition withover 10 million sold there will never be a shortage of parts so you can build
many of them on the cheap.

Home defense Our overall choice for home defense is a tie between the Mossberg 500 and the 1911. We think that
when it comes to your family you should have both. As a prepper we are taught to have a backup for everything.
This also allows you to teach your family members how to fire both a pistol and a shotgun.

What is the best of the best for all three? The Mossberg 500. It has the right balance of stopping power, reliability
and ease of use.

We would also recommend the purchase of an AR-15 for range practice and teaching the art of longer range shoot-
ing. Many people are familiar with the AR from being in the military and it is also the most popular weapon in
America.

The team at Destiny Survival Network hope you enjoyed this article and wish all of you and your families a safe and
prosperous lifetime of hunting and shooting. Stay safe and always remember gun safety.

Aug. 20, 2015, is the anniversary of the Big Burn, a devastating 1910 wildfire that burned three million
acres in Washington, Idaho and Montana, killing 80 people and changing the entire U.S. approach to
forest fires. Because of the high winds associated with them the current 2015 Wildfires in the Northeast
have been refereed to as ’firenadoes’ and has been three times more devastating then the 1910 fires.
The president declared an official State of Emergency in Washington State, which opens up the op-
portunity for struggling locals to get their hands on federal aid from agencies such as FEMA. The
declaration also allows for federal agencies to take a larger role in overseeing wildfire fighting efforts.

What can you to do to protect your family and your home?

People who live in urban interface areas (near forests or wildlands) can prep for wildland fire by creating defen-

sible space around their homes. Firefighters won’t even defend homes that don’t have defensible space; it’s too
risky and too many firefighters have died trying to protect homes that weren’t defensible. We just won’t do it if
there isn’t a safe space to defend a home. It’s fairly simple to create defensible space though; most people can
do it themselves. The following information is from www.firewise.org NFPA’s Firewise Communities Program
encourages local solutions for safety by involving homeowners in taking individual responsibility for preparing
their homes from the risk of wildfire. Firewise is a key component of Fire Adapted Communities – a collaborative
approach that connects all those who play a role in wildfire education, planning and action with comprehensive
resources to help reduce risk. The program is co-sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, the US Department
of the Interior, and the National Association of State Foresters.
To save lives and property from wildfire, NFPA’s Firewise Communities program teaches people how to adapt
to living with wildfire and encourages neighbors to work together and take action now to prevent losses. We all
have a role to play in protecting ourselves and each other from the risk of wildfire.
The recommendations come from the Firewise Communities Program and teaches the The basics of defensi-
ble space and the “home ignition zone”

The basics of defensible space and the “home ignition zone”

The concept of the home ignition zone was developed by USDA Forest Service fire scientist Jack Co-
hen in the late 1990s, following some breakthrough experimental research into how homes ignite due
to the effects of radiant heat. For more than 15 years, NFPA’s wildfire safety recommendations have
been shaped by this fire science and because of it, is able to provide actionable guidance for home-
owners to help them prepare homes/home landscapes to resist wildfire.

Video: Gary Marshall, former deputy fire chief in Bend, Oregon, explains
outdoor maintenance issues for homeowners in the WUI.

Using the Zone Concept

The primary goal for Firewise landscaping is fuel
reduction — limiting the amount of flammable veg-
etation and materials surrounding the home and
increasing the moisture content of remaining vegeta-
tion. The home itself and everything around it up to
100 – 200 feet is known as the ‘home ignition zone.’
In areas across the country where the risk of wildfire
is high, the home ignition zone extends up to 200
feet beyond the actual home structure. Within this
200 foot area, there are three zones:
Zone 1 encircles the structure and all its attach-
ments (wooden decks, fences, and boardwalks) for
at least 30 feet on all sides. Note: the 30-foot num-
ber comes from the very minimum distance, on flat
ground, that a wood

Zone concept - Zone 1

• Plants should be carefully spaced, low-growing and free of resins, oils and waxes that burn easily.
• Mow the lawn regularly. Prune trees up six to ten feet from the ground.
• Space conifer trees 30 feet between crowns. Trim back trees that overhang the house.
• Create a ‘fire-free’ area within five feet of the home, using non-flammable landscaping materials
and/or high-moisture-content annuals and perennials.
• Remove dead vegetation from under deck and within 10 feet of house.
• Consider fire-resistant material for patio furniture, swing sets, etc.
• Remove firewood stacks and propane tanks; they should not be located in this zone.
• Water plants, trees and mulch regularly.
• Consider xeriscaping if you are affected by water-use restrictions.

Zone 2 is 30 to 100 feet from the home, and plants in this zone should be low-growing, well irrigated
and less flammable. In this area:

• Leave 30 feet between clusters of two to three trees, or 20 feet between individual trees.
• Encourage a mixture of deciduous and coniferous trees.
• Create ‘fuel breaks’, like driveways, gravel walkways and lawns.
• Prune trees up six to ten feet from the ground.

Zone 3 is 100 to 200 feet from the home and this area should be thinned, although less space is
required than in Zone 2. NOTE: Because of other factors such as topography, the recommended dis-
tances to mitigate for radiant heat exposure actually extend between 100 to 200 feet from the home
– on a site-specific basis. In this area:

• Remove smaller conifers that are growing between taller trees. Remove heavy accumulation of
woody debris.
• Reduce the density of tall trees so canopies are not touching.
Download our Firewise Landscaping and Construction Guide which provides a more in-depth look at
each zone and the applicable actions steps (within that zone) that homeowners can take to reduce
the risk of wildfire damage to their home and property.

the risk of wildfire damage to their home and property.

Property owners need to address the “little things” first: NFPA advises property owners to start
with the house and work their way out. Having a nonflammable roof covering and assembly adds an
enormous safety measure. Keeping roofs and gutters clean and clear of leaves or needles is critical
to minimizing ignition from embers. Flammable attachments (e.g., untreated wooden decks) are very
vulnerable to ignition and can carry fire to the main structure. Keep flat surfaces clear of debris. Clean
out any leaves, needles or stored material that could burn from under decks or porches. During this
high fire danger season, remove large potential heat sources such as piles of firewood, spare building
materials, vehicles - anything that could catch embers or ignite by flames in the grass needs to be as
far away from dwellings as possible. Download NFPA’s Firewise Tips Checklist for Homeowners that
includes these and other actionable steps residents can start working on today.

Remove fuel sources close to the house: The perimeter of the home and attachments out to about
5 feet is vulnerable if there is anything there - organic mulch, woody shrubs and plants, juniper bush-
es - that could ignite and thus allow flames to touch the house. Wind-driven fire will create a blizzard
of embers that will pile up in corners where you might normally find accumulations of leaves or nee-
dles around your home. These corners, nooks and crannies should be clear of any flammables. If
there are any limbs or branches overhanging the roof, or any branches close to/touching the house,
trim back to at least 10 feet from the house. Keep grass mowed low and well watered if possible.

Larger projects to reduce potential fuel: Our tips for homeowners also cover projects that can be
done when fire is not imminent. Download our Firewise Tips Checklist for Homeowners that includes
tips for landscaping to create space between trees, removing heavy accumulations of brush or trees
out to 100-200 feet depending on slope and topography (because radiant heat ALSO causes homes
to burn), creating a low-water (xeriscape) landscape, adding hardscape (rock or concrete patios,
walkways, etc.) to break up the path of flames, screening vents or openings with fine metal mesh,
and replacing windows with double- or triple-paned alternatives or tempered glass.

Embers and small flames are major culprits: Jack Cohen’s work and further analysis and studies,
including experiments sponsored by the insurance industry, show that not only should the radiant heat
exposure be mitigated in the home ignition zone, but exposure to embers and surface fire as well.
In fact, all the research around home destruction and home survival in wildfires point to embers and
small flames as the main way that the majority of homes ignite in wildfires. For that reason, NFPA rec-
ommends methods to prepare homes to withstand ember attack and minimize the likelihood of flames
or surface fire touching the home or any attachments (fences, decks, porches) as the first place for
homeowners to start working to prepare their properties.

Interview with Nurse Amy and Doctor Bones

(DoomandBloom.net)

DSM: When did you first get interested in disaster preparedness?

Amy & Bones: Living in South Florida, we’ve always had extra supplies for power outages due to
storms, but after hurricane Katrina, where more than 1800 people died, we realized that there were
deficiencies in our national emergency medical response and that government resources may not be
enough to keep you safe. Despite the best efforts of hundreds of disaster medical assistance teams
that converged on the disaster area, flooding and the sheer number of people who needed medical
attention (15000 a day in the early aftermath) prevented medical personnel from getting to some
people in time. So my wife, a nurse practitioner, and I decided that there was a real need for medical
education for the average person, something beyond just teaching them to call 911.

Let’s face it, there are so many different disasters that occur in the average year, including hurricanes,
tornadoes, wildfires, earthquakes, and floods. In the news today, there is drought in California, wild-
fires in the Northwest, and hurricanes threatening both Hawaii and the Florida coast.

I’ll admit that the chances that you will personally be affected by any one disaster during a single year
may be small, but what’s the chance you’ll be affected by a disaster during your lifetime, your chil-
dren’s lifetimes? Not so small.

Therefore, it pays to know how to deal with injuries and illness when the ambulance is heading in the
other direction, even if you don’t do that for a living.

DSM: How long have you been doing your medical preparedness thing?

Amy & Bones: We retired a few years ago. It was either learn to play golf or do something that
might help save lives one day. The decision was easy.

DSM: What is the difference between survival medicine and modern emergency medicine?

The most basic thing, the goal. In modern times, what’s your goal when you come upon an injured
or ill person? You want to stabilize that person and then transport them to the next highest medical
resource. But in a survival setting, YOU become the highest medical resource, and transport might
not be an option. So you become the end of the line with regards to that person’s care and recovery,
at least for a time.

DSM: How is your Survival Medicine Handbook any different from the average First Aid book?
