A&E Air Inc. is into its second year as an incorporated company but managed to oust the long-term first-place winner for heating and air conditioning this year and also snagged third place for plumbing. The company puts customers first, then its employees. “We try to emphasize that because we feel what is missing in the trades is treating your guys well,” said owner Nick Martinuk. “We don’t want the one-time customers, we want them calling us for the next 30 years.” Staff at A&E put lots of pride in their work and want customers to feel they are someone to trust when things break down. Honesty, dedication, and hard work are their three goals. “We like to give our customers honesty in the sense that they always know what we are doing,” said owner Justin Martinuk. Fellow owner Brandon Russell said staff bring a positive, youthful energy into every house they enter. Showing up with a smile on their face helps ease the customer’s stress, particularly when it is an emergency call. Even though all the owners are young, between the three of them they have 35 years experience. Both Brandon and Justin started in their trade at 16-years old and Nick in his early 20s. Now the owner of Grooming by Britanny, located at 1-900 Highway Avenue in Redcliff, Childs-LeRoy began in the dog grooming industry only three years ago, but has quickly gained a following thanks to her skill and care for dogs. “I’ve always known that I wanted to work with dogs in some way, shape or form,” Childs-LeRoy told the News. After losing her job during the pandemic, Childs-LeRoy was invited to train under an established dog groomer, but eventually expanded to her own studio in May of 2022 as demand for her services grew. Childs-LeRoy admits she was nervous about the establishment of own business, but says her clientele were consistent in their support. “I was nominated and won Best of Medicine Hat last year and was shocked because it was my first year,” said ChildsLeRoy. “Then, when I found out that I won this year, I cried like four times that morning ... It’s a little shocking and surreal, honestly, but it makes this all worth it.” Childs-LeRoy shares her profuse thanks with members of Medicine Hat, Redcliff and the surrounding area, whom she credits much of her success to. When discussing what services and features set her business apart, ChildsLeRoy highlighted her specialization in grooming large dog breeds and farm dogs. Country Crumbs Bakery and Cafe has come a long way in the two years since opening on Third Street in downtown Medicine Hat — and not just the 399 kilometres from where its history first began. Joe Desjardins and his family moved here from Innisfail in the summer of 2020 after having owned and operated a similar business there for 12 years. After moving to the bigger centre of Medicine Hat, and despite being in the middle of a pandemic, Desjardins missed the feel of the business and the customer relationships they’d built and decided to give the eatery business another go. And as far as the community is concerned, it was clearly the right call as Country Crumbs was named No. 1 bakery in the 2023 Best of Medicine Hat contest. “When I came to Medicine Hat I just wanted to prove to myself that I could do it again,” Desjardins says. “We’ve always known that customer service is No. 1, and no matter what, customers are first. So that’s what we did, pay attention to that, work hard and find the right staff. “And we have a really great team here.” In Innisfail, The Coffee Cottage as it was called, focused more on the eatery aspect, while Country Crumbs has its focus more on baked good and treats — though there is plenty more than that available. “We became more of a bakery this time,” Desjardins says. “When we were in Innisfail we always sold lots of baked foods, and we just wanted to do something a little different here.” The Country Crumbs’ shelves are lined with loaves of bread, buns, cakes, pies and treats, but there is also a cooler with homestyle soups and a range of specialty A long road to Country Crumbs NEWS PHOTO Owner Joe Desjardins opened Country Crumbs Bakery and Cafe in 2021 and has already become a local favourite, winning the Best of Medicine Hat bakery category for 2023. coffees. And numerous Hatters say they can’t wait for the good weather so they can sit on the cafe’s outdoor patio. “It’s really tough competition out here, and there are a lot good people here doing this,” Desjardins says. “For us to be chosen (Best of Medicine Hat) is a real honour. There are a lot of good bakeries and I feel like they all deserve this award.”

The locally owned business has been at work in the Medicine Hat area for years, but found its stride during the pandemic when Hatters took the opportunities to improve their properties and make backyards their own getaway spaces. “We were fortunate to one of the businesses that thrived,” said owner Cyle Dyck. “We’ve really bloomed in the last three years, and a lot of that is from referrals from our customers.” That’s the result of service that comes from personalized touches which range from very involved to simply sending in a screenshot to Precision designers and asking them what’s possible.
