St.Petersburg
Date of Visit: Evening, 23 June 2022
Place: Nevsky Prospekt
Nevsky Prospekt is St. Petersburg's main avenue and one of the best-known
streets in Russia. Cutting through the historical center of the city, it runs from
the Admiralty to the Moscow Railway Station and then, after a slight kink, to
the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. In the very first days of St. Petersburg it was
simply the beginning of the road to the ancient city of Novgorod, but it quickly
became adorned with beautiful buildings, squares and bridges and became the
very center of the bustling, rapidly growing city.
Date of Visit: Evening, 24 June 2022
Place: Saint-Petersburg Metro
Saint-Petersburg Metro is an effective underground public transportation
system, which operates in the urban area and some nearby destinations. The
metro is the most convenient mode of public transport in St.Petersburg. It is
more faster, convenient, cheaper and safer to move around the city by metro,
than by car or other forms of public transport. Some stations design may be
interesting for tourists as an example of Soviet architecture too.
Important facts about St Petersburg metro
• The St Petersburg metro is Russia’s second metro system. Construction was
interrupted by the Second World War, but the first line was opened in 1955
• The first stations were built in magnificent and imposing Stalinist Empire
style, ‘Palaces of the People’ glorifying the achievements of the workers and
state
• Nowadays the metro system is made up of 5 lines and 72 stations, but
significant expansion is planned over the next decades to connect every corner
of the city
• No trip to St Petersburg is complete without exploring the metro to see the
exquisite decoration and variety of architectural styles comprising the stations

Place: The Grand Palace at Peterhof
The Grand Palace at Peterhof was designed to be the centerpiece of Peter the
Great's "Russian Versaille". Around 1720, the Tsar gave up on attempts to
establish his court at Strelna, mainly because the boggy ground proved entirely
unsuitable for the canals and fountains that he envisioned. Moving his attentions
further west to Peterhof, the Tsar began to draw up his own plans for the grounds
and palace. Work had already begun on a modest palace, designed by Jean-
Baptiste Le Blond, in 1714, and that building was completed in 1721. Visitors
entering the palace are confronted by Rastrelli's incredibly ornate Ceremonial
Staircase, which sets the tone for what is to come with a magnificent fresco of
Aurora and Genius and multitude of gilded statues. Highlights include the richly
gilded Ballroom and Felten's splendid white-and-turquoise Throne Room, which
has a particularly fine parquet floor. The Western Chinese Study is heavily
Oriental, with jewel red and green walls and a beautiful Chinese tea-set. The
Drawing Room of the Imperial Suite is equally influenced by chinoiserie, with
particularly fine silk wall hangings. The rest of the Imperial Suite, the royal family's
private quarters, is furnished in grand 19th century style. Also of interest is Peter
the Great's charmingly simple Oak Study, and the adjacent Crown Room, which
was in fact the Imperial bedchamber.

Place: The Winter Palace
St. Petersburg's most famous building, the Winter Palace not only physically
dominates Palace Square and the south embankment of the Neva River,
but also plays a central political, symbolic, and cultural role in the three-
century history of the city. The Winter Palace was declared part of the State
Hermitage Museum on 17 October 1917. Although initial Bolshevik policy
was to remove all Imperial symbols from the palace and use the premises
as a museum of the Revolution, the restoration project of the 1940s and
1950s, which followed further extensive damage to the building during the
Siege of Leningrad, saw the beginning of an ongoing process to return the
Imperial splendor of many of the palace's rooms. The State Rooms of the
Winter Palace now form one of the most popular sections of the Hermitage,
and are essential viewing for all visitors to St. Petersburg.

Place: Church of Savior on the Spilled Blood
Church of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is known to Petersburgers as
the Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood - or even just the Church on
the Blood - as it marks the spot where Alexander II was fatally wounded in
an assassination attempt on March 1, 1881. Designed by Alfred Parland in
the style of 16th and 17th-century Russian churches, the Church of the
Resurrection provides a stark (some would say jarring) contrast to its
surroundings of Baroque, Classical and Modernist architecture. One of the
most impressive elements of the church is the extravagant shrine
constructed on the spot where Alexander II was fatally wounded, which
has maintained a special place within the church's interior. It was
constructed to Parland's design, and completed in July 1907. Four columns
of gray violet jasper serve as the base of the shrine. Rising up the shrine,
small rectangular columns unite the carved stone awning and the
decorated mosaic icons with images of the patron saint of the Romanov
family. The columns are supported by a frieze and cornice and stone-
carved pediment with vases of jasper along the corners.
