WHY I LOVE HIKING
Hello! My name is Sean, (0) but I love hiking. When I hike, I can enjoy the sight and sound of nature
(9) surrounds me. Sometimes, if I am lucky, I get to come across beautiful species of birds, which is why I
always (10) brought my camera along with me when I hike. What most people do not know is that hiking has a
lot of (11) advantage. For example, because there are a lot of uneven surfaces, it can make me strong when I
try to navigate my way around (12) it, particularly my legs and core. So, I don't need to go to the gym to get fit.
Hiking is enough (13) to me. Hiking also makes me appreciate our lovely Mother Nature. After all, seeing
Mother Nature from a computer screen doesn't even compare to actually standing in the middle of Mother
Nature herself. It is nice to be (14) remind of how small we all are compared to what the nature has to offer us.
Also, when I have (15) reach the top, nothing can beat its breathtaking view. Feeling the wind on my face and
in my hair is worth all the sweat and energy I spent making my way to the top. The sunrise view is beautiful,
which is why I make sure the camera still has (16) it’s batteries when I reach the top.

Burj Khalifa
Burj Khalifa literally means Khalifa Tower. It was formerly known as Burj Dubai or Dubai Tower, which was
changed to Burj Khalifa when the tower officially opened on 4th January,2010. Khalifa is derived from the name of
Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Maktoum, who is the president of Abu Dhabi as well as United Arab Emirates, Burj
Khalifa, and other construction projects in Dubai.
The architectural height of Burj Khalifa is 828 metres. This is measured to the top of the spire, as its spire is
considered an architectural element of the tower. Before 2010, Burj Khalifa’s height has long been kept as a secret in
order to prevent it from being surpassed by potential competitors. Finally, the owner, Emaar, claimed the standard
height of Burj Khalifa to be 828 metres, with a total height of 830 metres to its tip (there's a 2-metre small needle atop
the spire at 838 metres), making it the tallest building in the world in any categories. As of 2019, Burj Khalifa has
been holding the crown for the world’s tallest building for 10 years.
The highest occupied floor is level 154, which is 584 m high from the ground. For public sightseeing, there are
3 observation decks on levels 124,125, and 148. The one on level 148 is now the world’s highest observation deck at a
height of 555 metres. Every year, fireworks show or laser show will take place on Burj Khalifa on New Year’s Eve,
attracting thousands of people to watch on the scene and millions to watch online at the same time. Laser shows also
occur in some other events or festivals.
Burj Khalifa was designed by Adrian Smith, from Chicago architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. He
has also designed some other notable projects like Jin Mao Tower, Wuhan Greenland Center in China, and Jeddah
Tower in Saudi Arabia. The tower is built on a shamrock-shaped footprint, making the tower seen like a letter ‘Y’
from above. This shape is derived from Hymenocallis, also known as desert lily, a local plant that lives in the desert.
Like the flower, the tower’s cross section area reduces gradually as it rises.

Bullying Is Not Cool
We never knew much about bullying until we attended a talk about it. Dr Fong, a psychologist, was invited by
our headmaster to give a talk about bullying. The talk was held in the school hall and we gained a lot of
information about bullying from Dr Fong.
We learnt that bullying is a widespread problem in many schools all over the world. It is a repeated
behaviour that causes physical harm or hurtful feelings to others. In general, there are four types of bullying
which are carried out with different tactics.
Physical bullying includes pushing, beating up, stealing or damaging other people’s belongings. Verbal
bullying includes teasing, calling names, saying hurtful things or threatening people. Social bullying happens
when a group of people purposely excludes someone from joining their group, spreads rumours or makes
someone look stupid. Cyberbullying means using emails, text messages or social networks like Facebook to say
hurtful things about someone.
We also learnt that normally students who bully others do not feel confident about themselves. They pick
on weaker or unpopular students to bully so that they can feel powerful. Sadly, many students do not report
bullying because they are scared. They are unaware of the fact that keeping quiet about being bullied or seeing
someone getting bullied would only make things worse.
To stop bullying, we must not be afraid to report the incidents to our parents or teachers. At the end of the
talk, Dr Fong reminded us that bullying is not cool, but respecting others is. We could not agree more with her!

Questions 35 to 40
You are going to read a passage about coconut trees.
Six sentences have been removed from the passage. Choose from the sentences (A – H) to fit each gap (35 - 40). There
are two extra sentences which you do not need to use.
For each question, blacken the correct answer (A - H) on your answer sheet.
The Tree of a Thousand Uses
Many people refer to the coconut tree as ‘the tree of a thousand uses’ and ‘tree of life’. 35
36 In other tropical countries, the leaves are used to make toys, brooms and roofing materials for
houses. The thin ribs of coconut leaves are made into toothpicks and satay skewers. The tough trunks of the
coconut trees provide timber of good quality. 37
The coconut is useful as well. It contains juice that is rich in vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants. All
the goodness can provide energy and keep us hydrated. 38
The coconut also produces oil and milk that are highly beneficial to us. The coconut oil can be used to
improve the condition of our scalps, hair and skin. 39
The coconut milk, on the other hand, is an important ingredient for cooking curry and nasi lemak.
40 The shell and husk have been used as handicrafts and musical instruments. The fibre outside
the husk is used to make doormats, sacks and ropes.
A They are used for making buildings, furniture, bridges, boats and even drums.
B The white, fleshy part of the coconut seed is called coconut meat.
C It can also be used as massage oil or to remove head lice.
D These names are given to the coconut tree because every part of the tree has various functions.
