ARCHDIGEST.COM 53 W hen it comes to interior design, Ralph Lauren would be hard-pressed to pinpoint any one passion. “I have never followed architectural rules or chosen one decorative theme,” he admits. “I love contemporary. I love American Country, the Southwest, Bauhaus.” Over the course of his legendary career, that polyglot sensibility has informed every aspect of his work and life, from his runway shows to his own residences and collections. “I don’t care if a thing is English, French, antique, or modern. It’s whatever appeals to my eye.” Put simply, he adds, “I’m a romantic.” Those words, among many other intimate musings, resonate powerfully in the style icon’s new book, Ralph Lauren: A Way of Living (Rizzoli). Published on the 40th anniversary DISCOVERIES of Ralph Lauren Home, the volume both surveys the designer’s own abodes and chronicles the evolution of his trailblazing lifestyle brand—launched in 1983 as a furnishings extension to his fashion empire. “Our homes are a canvas for living,” he writes. “Whether we live in the city, the country, on a farm, at the beach, in a penthouse or cabin, each is home and tells our story.” His own story has unfolded at five extraordinary properties, many of which design lovers will recognize from the pages of Architectural Digest. In Manhattan, Lauren and his wife, Ricky, retreat to the sculptural volumes of a prewar Fifth Avenue apartment, boldly renovated in the style of a downtown loft (AD, July/August 1980). North of the city, they have transformed a historic Bedford estate into a timeless showcase for beloved antiques (AD, November 2004 and September 2013). Meanwhile, the couple’s Colorado ranch, christened Double RL after their initials, is their love letter to the American West, with timber lodges and barns set on 17,000 pristine acres (AD, November 2002 and September 2013). There are also the THE LIVING ROOM OF RALPH LAUREN’S HOUSE IN BEDFORD, NEW YORK, ONE OF FIVE HOMES FEATURED IN HIS NEW BOOK, RALPH LAUREN: A WAY OF LIVING. BOOKS A Life Well Lived In his deeply personal new tome, American design icon Ralph Lauren reflects on the meaning of home BJÖRN WALLANDER.

And at the tip of Long Island, the family’s shipshape Montauk getaway nods to Japan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and the sea. Diverse though those abodes may be, common themes emerge in Lauren’s first-person accounts, offering a rich portrait both of the man and the brand. Immediately apparent is his deep love of nature, from Jamaica’s azure waves to Montauk’s fragrant pines to Colorado’s San Juan Mountains. (“I love land for itself—the look, the beauty of undisturbed land,” he writes of Double RL Ranch.) Equally clear is his passion for collecting, be it art, blankets, or books. Craftsmanship, integrity, heritage, pride of place—these concepts braid together in his residences just as they do in past Ralph Lauren Home campaigns, archival photographs of which have been grouped thematically for the book. As much as the monograph is about design, it is also about domestic life, offering glimpses at Lauren’s everyday rituals and routines. Those include games of pool, lighting candles in the 1. Movies, too, are a regular form of nighttime entertainment for the cinephile couple. Whereas in Bedford, he and Ricky regularly retreat to their mahoganypaneled sitting room to watch 1930s classics, at Double RL Ranch, the extended family settles into the many leather armchairs of the Saloon theater. “What I do is about living,” Lauren says. “It’s about living the best life you can and enjoying the fullness of the life around you—from what you wear, to the way you live, to the way you love.” And nobody does it like him. ralphlauren.com/ home —SAM COCHRAN 1. 58 ARCHDIGEST.COM DISCOVERIES 1–4. THE ESCALE SUR LA BAIE, ESCALE ANTIQUE, ESCALE AU PALAIS, AND ESCALE SACRÉE (DETAIL SHOWN) BRACELETS FROM LE GRAND TOUR COLLECTION BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS. W hen 18th-century gentlemen headed to Europe to partake of the Grand Tour—a crucial step in a civilizing education—they often recorded cultural sites in charming paintings, in much the same way that today’s globe-trotters snap away with smartphones. Van Cleef & Arpels, the Paris jeweler that was founded in 1906, has taken those watercolor reveries as inspiration for a new array of treasures: four bracelets set with impressionistic combinations of gemstones—sapphires, diamonds, emeralds, and more—that evoke the landscapes of Rome, Florence, Naples, and Venice. “Turning a watercolor into a bejeweled bracelet is both a technical challenge that I wanted to push even further and a very interesting creative development,” says Nicolas Bos, the president and CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels. “They call to mind true paintings, but they are fully articulated, with a very complex and detailed work of connections ensuring suppleness.” Utilizing gems embedded with a density that recalls Italy’s centuries-old tradition of micromosaics, the series (part of the larger Le Grand Tour collection) is a pointillistic parade of romantic cityscapes— a bevy of legendary architectural elements relieved by green leaves and blue waters. Embodying Rome, the Escale Antique bracelet is worked with imagery of the Colosseum and columns found in the Forum. Escale Sacrée is delicately emblazoned with Florence’s Duomo emerging from a star-studded evening sky. The Neapolitan bracelet, known as Escale Sur La Baie, features Mount Vesuvius erupting above the shimmering Bay of Naples. As for the Venetian segment of this lapidary journey, the Escale Au Palais bracelet is spiked with graphic Venetian Gothic arches from the Doge’s Palace, as well as candy-striped gondola poles. Small wonder that Bos likens the bracelets to extracts from a travel diary. Lucky for those of us who can’t draw a straight line, Van Cleef & Arpels has taken brush in hand and conjured a quartet of masterworks. 60 ARCHDIGEST.COM F or AD100 mainstay Ken Fulk, every great design starts with a compelling narrative. “I instinctively built a business around storytelling. Whether I’m designing a house that stands for generations, a hotel for thousands of guests, or a party that lasts only a few hours, it’s all about creating a genuinely transportive environment and experience,” says the freespirited conjurer. Predictably, Fulk’s new five-piece collection for The Rug Company, titled Divine Inspiration, is positively brimming with history, fantasy, and delightfully idiosyncratic interpretations of old-world forms and iconography. Consider Saint Joe’s Dome, a loosely illustrated rendition of the soaring ceiling of the deconsecrated Romanesque Revival church in San Francisco that houses Fulk’s Saint Joseph’s Arts Society. Or Surrealist Garden, a trippy dreamscape that nods to the folkloric and allegorical imagery of pictorial tribal rugs. Sonic Wave and Sonic Spruce, the most abstract offerings in the line, pay homage to the power of music and sound, while Zellige puts a snappy contemporary twist on traditional Moroccan tile work and colors. The narrative theme takes its most literal form in the pattern A Life Reflected, Fulk’s hat-tip to historic delft tiles, which allows clients to create a completely bespoke carpet based on their own personal lives and loves. “You can pick and choose individual panels that reflect your hobbies or passions or anything that has meaning to you. Artists in our studio can even do portraits of you and your kids and your pets. You’re literally weaving your own story into the design,” he explains. “And that’s the joy of working with The Rug Company. They weren’t afraid of letting us do what we do best and try something a little strange and magical.” therugcompany.com —MAYER RUS AD100 DESIGNER KEN FULK AT THE SAINT JOSEPH’S ARTS SOCIETY, WITH PIECES FROM HIS LINE FOR THE RUG COMPANY. LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Bridging the Divide In Houston, Thomas Woltz revitalizes and reunites public green space in need H ouston’s Memorial Park was meant to honor those who sacrificed their lives in World War I. But as the project approached its 2024 centennial it had become a memorial to its own landscape. Underfunded maintenance and prolonged drought had left most of its thousands of trees to die. The decimated 1,500-acre grounds weren’t much to look at, as Houstonians learned from Memorial Drive, the highway that has divided it, unceremoniously, since the 1950s. Thomas Woltz and his firm, Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects, were hired to reimagine the park, a process that began a decade ago and may take another to finish. But this year Houstonians rejoiced in the progress Woltz and his team have made on the project. Their latest big achievement was burying two stretches of the highway, together almost 1,000 feet long, below massive land bridges that reunite the two halves of the landscape. Previously, Woltz also constructed a 100-acre gathering place called the Clay Family Eastern Glades. At its heart is a five-acre lake that, like all of Woltz’s interventions, is as practical as it is beautiful, in this case capturing and filtering rainwater for irrigation. The glades are ringed by an elliptical path, which serves as an orienting device. “If you’re on the ellipse and the path is curving slightly,” Woltz says, “you know you’re on one of the long sides. If the curve is quite sharp, you know you’re at one of the ends. I think,” Woltz adds, “that when you know where you are, your spirit can open up to the natural setting more readily.” Houstonians aren’t the only ones returning to this once forlorn swath of greenery. “The park is so alive with insects and birds calling out at night,” says Woltz, “that friends are sending me recordings.” memorialparkconservancy.org —FRED A. RESTAURANTS Dinner Theater At Frou Frou in Lisbon, Jean-Philippe Demeyer crafts a mind-bending mash-up of cultural reference points B elgian designer JeanPhilippe Demeyer isn’t a fan of unreconstructed design clichés. “I need a twist, a feeling out of the ordinary,” insists the AD100 talent. And there are twists aplenty at Frou Frou, a fearlessly inventive Chinesethemed restaurant that is affiliated with JNcQUOI, a private members club in Lisbon, Portugal. (The restaurant is open to the public.) Demeyer’s vision for the lavish eatery draws inspiration from a dizzying array of sources: the 1980s architecture of the building that houses the club; the outré style of ABBA; and the centuries-old influence of Asian art and design on European aesthetics. The blue-lacquered ceiling, for example, nods to the preferred eye shadow of the ABBA sirens, while the proliferation of dragon, cloud, and lotus motifs—including the elaborate embroidery on the bespoke, imperial-yellow sofa upholstery—embraces the auspicious symbols so central to Chinese culture. The cloud imagery is also a sly wink at the work of surrealist René Magritte, Demeyer’s countryman. Cascades of fringe, which line the walls of the restaurant, add an extra layer of froufrou finery. If all of this sounds like design by free association, that’s simply part of Demeyer’s madcap charm. “This is my take on East meets West,” he says, “something that feels new and full of wonder.” jncquoi.com —MAYER RUS 3 1 2 PEDRO FERREIRA

The Charles Edwards design catalog boasts an extensive range of reproduction styles, all of which can be reinterpreted to create a modern and elegant look. While many lantern designs are highly classical, there are also some eccentric styles. It is this desire to embrace the unusual and create a relationship between the past and present that gives the Charles Edwards collection its charm. Each piece bears the hallmarks of authenticity, quality, and craftsmanship. The design studio also accepts original commissions to create a completely new design. SPECIAL ADVERTISING SECTION DESIGN STORIES Open doors to beautiful exteriors. Gloster aims to create special moments outdoors, with the sole focus of designing and building the world’s finest sustainable, luxury outdoor furniture. As one of the world’s largest international producers of teak furniture over the past 50 years, Gloster sources wood that can always be traced back to its origin from one of the government-owned teak plantations and then onwards to one of their own manufacturing facilities in Indonesia. The philosophy is simple: Design the most well-crafted, innovative product possible while honoring their teak roots, from seed to seat. There is pride in the craftsmanship behind each Gloster piece, but great manufacturing is wasted without great design. Gloster’s partnership with German designer Sebastian Herkner has resulted in two breathtaking furniture collections. Haven, consisting of nautically inspired comfort; and Fern, where natural materials meet modern frames. Herkner’s work embodies bringing new technologies and traditional craftsmanship together. “There is a sensitivity and identity to my work that emphasizes the function, the material and the detail,” he says. “I transport and interpret characteristics from various contexts of society and culture, and implement them in new artifacts. This character infuses the most everyday objects with respect and personality. In this manner, seemingly contrary things can experience esteem.” GLOSTER FURNITURE TEAK, CRAFTS AND INNOVATION 1.
