From the Archives of Aitheria NyxRemember the TitansMy friend, thank you for joining me over the years in my studies and analyses of the many varied ancestries who share this world with us. It’s because of your support and those of like-minded others that I’ve been able to continue searching for answers, but today I’m writing to you about something different. Yes, there’s another mysterious species involved along the way, and as always, we should think before we demonize them. My philosophy hasn’t changed. In truth, my work serves multiple purposes, and it’s time I revealed one of the others to you. As an advocate of monsters, I speak for those people to whom society doesn’t give a voice or a chance. Also, as a herald of the space element, I’ve been investigating certain actions of the mysterious god beings known as enigmas across the world as I travel. Usually I’m looking at recent incursions or schemes. But this investigation goes back to ancient days. You might have heard of an ancient Titanomachy? A war between enormous god-beasts sometimes called the “First Ones” or the “Progenitors” and the new gods, invaders at the time. History tells us it was a war, but in most religious accounts, the victors have portrayed it as mainly a one-sided slaughter. The new gods birthed a child, a mighty world dragon, who devoured the god-beasts and used their divine essence to lay eggs that would then become the various heritages of dragons. The mortals were saved from the First Ones’ rampages and lavished praise on the new gods, but they feared the dragon who did most of the fighting, causing an estrangement that led to the great dragon being imprisoned in the moon. These religious and historical accounts seem internally consistent, and they’ve been confirmed by deities who keep track of records of the past. But I sometimes wonder if those records might have been tampered with or if some of the information is being kept from mortalkind intentionally. Is that true? And if so, then why? I believe it has something to do with a subtle manipulation by the Enigmas that had major consequences. Some of the story doesn’t quite make sense. I’m not sure what they did, but I think they wanted the dragon deity trapped and angry, ready to use in some future scheme. But like I said, the religious and historical accounts from followers of the new gods were consistent. You might think I said that as a compliment, but I meant it as a complaint… and as an observation. History, especially ancient history, is usually messy. The consistency is unusual, and it’s incredibly unhelpful to what I’m trying to study. Almost suspiciously so. And that’s why I realized I needed to talk to people versed deeply in other religions.I started by asking a long-lived adherent of the Eld, the ancient elemental religion that predated even the Titanomachy. This follower was a herald of the time element and seemed a likely candidate for a competing account. But they explained to me that the Eld stayed out of that conflict entirely. The embodiment of the world’s elements is ever neutral, so that’s not really a surprise, but I suppose I expected that even the ever implacable and unflappable elemental life force of the planet would have taken note of something as unmistakable as the Titanomachy.I was disappointed, but this avenue wasn’t a dead end. The herald of the time element shared a secret with me that few alive yet know. And it’s one I’ve chosen you, out of those who share my correspondences, to read first. I trust you to keep this confidential for a time, though I can assure you I have verified it before informing you: Not all the god-beasts are dead. A few survived, especially those who either were no threat to mortalkind in the first place or lived in a secluded location where they didn’t run into mortals at the time, such as a lonely volcano or the bottom of the sea. And even the ones that died left behind descendants. Whether through the kind of reproduction similar to mortals or perhaps even the fracturing of their divine essence upon their death—in much the same way the great dragon birthed the dragon species by devouring some of that essence. They are beings of incredible potential. Scions of the First Ones. Children of the Titanomachy. Titans.I came to the realization that titans, who are the last surviving god-beasts among the Progenitors, may possess answers that are hidden from the historical record. And that’s where it gets interesting—when I met my first titan, I learned that there are other ancestries, such as bogeys, living spells, and ogres, with different connections to the Titanomachy, and others, such as krakens and even the amphibious salamander people known as xotlxotl, that might genealogically be an especially exceptional sort of titan that happen to exist in large numbers and share a distinct set of features due to their specific origin and the shifts of the intervening generations. This wasn’t just the case of a tiny window cracking open when a door closed—I had been given the key to an entire treasure vault of secrets that might expose secrets lost to myth. The gods aren’t talking about it, but why? Are they ashamed? Grieved? Or something more? Whatever the case, I will seek the truth. And when I’m done gathering all I can, the world will once again remember the titans.— Aitheria Nyx, Herald of the Space Element, Advocate of Monsters
Titans4Descendants of the old gods left dead and forgotten at the end of a war between the old gods and the new, titans are limitless wells of potential living in a world that has passed them by and one that isn’t always kind to them. When the war between gods, known as the Titanomachy, ended and the new gods emerged victorious, the world dragon Talir devoured the remains of the original god-beasts, known as the First Ones in some cultures and the Progenitors in others. And from that stolen power, the dragon species was born. However, Talir did not completely consume every spark—bits and pieces remained throughout the world. At times, Talir failed to completely consume a godbeast, leaving behind small fragments. Or sometimes, the epic battle that preceded the god-breast’s demise scattered a portion of their essence across the land. In other cases, they secretly shared or imbued their essence into a vessel before the fight. Or perhaps, deep in the most secluded areas of the land, the First Ones continue to exist! Maybe they avoided annihilation by using deceitful methods or because they were fortunate enough to establish a lair that was both sufficiently isolated and secure. The newborn titans remain rare and continue to emerge from deeply embedded essence that has recently been released from the earth, or from smaller sparks that suddenly birth a titan. Thus, these newborn titans are often still considered firstgeneration titans.Titans are born from these sparks of essence and cannot reproduce and create more titans, unlike krakens and others ancestries, which may have descended from titankin. But a true titan, if they’re capable of having o f f s p r i n g at all, will have offspring who aren’t titans and imbued with a spark of essence… at least while the original titan still lives. It is possible for the spark of essence to transfer to an offspring, but only after the titan has passed away and the spark becomes free. Even then, there is no guarantee that the spark will transfer to the titan’s offspring and may simply disappear into the earth, perhaps to birth a new titan in time.Because of their origin and ecology, titans have forms that look incredibly different from each other. These days, they are sometimes born to a parent of some species who absorbed that leftover essence. Most often, this parent births a child in an immaculate conception (regardless of whether the parent was normally capable of birthing a child due to their age or anatomy); in this case, the onset of the birth could be quite sudden after the essence is absorbed. More rarely, the spark of an old god enters and saves an unborn child who was otherwise on the brink of death. However, the life they save comes at a great cost, as their identity and species undergo a transformation, turning them into a titan. Either way, a titan born to a mortal parent tends to have some physical features in common with that parent as well as others shared with the First One whose spark formed them. They tend to be significantly larger than a standard humanoid but drastically smaller than a First One, which were god-beasts said to tower over cities, essentially kaiju. A few are only the size of an average humanoid, although that’s extremely rare.Surrogate birth isn’t the only way titans are born, however. It takes longer, but titans can simply emerge from the crumbling earth, out of the depths of an ancient tree, or anywhere else the essence has
Legacy Species OptionsIf you are using ability score boosts for species, titans gain +2 to your choice of Strength and Charisma and +1 to the other. If you’re not using mastery properties, razor spark’s second spark instead grants you the following effect: if you hit a creature with an Unarmed Strike granted by razor spark, that creature has disadvantage on their next attack roll before the beginning of your next turn.5taken root and slowly grown. Titans with this origin sometimes have an even more monstrous appearance than the rest, and they sometimes grow even larger over time. The world has forgotten the titans, and the godbeasts that gave them birth are now mentioned only in myth. Thus, most titans don’t necessarily know exactly what they are. If they had a mortal parent, they know they’re something entirely different. If they arose spontaneously, they might not have many, if any, clues about their origin at all. In either case, they possess strength and an inexplicable, overwhelming drive within themselves. As such, they often choose to take major action. Perhaps they engage in an epic quest to understand and seize their destiny, becoming a great hero. But perhaps instead they grow their strength until they can destroy an entire city with their power and become a monster instead. Which will you be?If you want to play a mysterious and powerful descendant of a fallen brood of ancient kaiju godbeasts, you should play a titan. You Might...• Seek to understand the mysteries of your titanic nature.• Be larger than life and possessed of features reminiscent of an ancient god-beast, both in physical appearance and personality.• Feel fragments of an intense feeling or memory every once in a while from the spark within you.Others Probably...• Have no idea exactly what you are and therefore wonder if you’re a hero or a monster.• Assume that you’ll be able to handle all kinds of issues involving brawn due to your titan features and size, while underestimating your other strong points.• Feel their breath catch every so often as they look at you, as if tapping into a deep ancestral memory of captivation, fear, or awe.NamesTitans born to a mortal parent usually have names given by that parent, though their name might reflect their titanic nature, which was normally obvious even at birth. Those who emerge from the land either choose their own name or have a name given to them as tales of their deeds spread.Sample NamesAkupara, Atlas, Avalanche, Behemoth, Cethleann, Ethniu, Gigan, Hyperion, Leviathan, Mnemosyne, Prometheus, Pyroclast, Rhea, Rodan, Themis, Tiamat, Varan, Ziz.Titans TraitsCreature Type: HumanoidSize: Medium (about 6–7 feet tall) or Large (about 10–11 feet tall), chosen when you select this species. Whichever you choose, your reach is 5 feetSpeed: 30 feetAs a Titan, you have these special traits.Titan’s Spark. You possess a powerful spark from one of the ancient god-beasts destroyed by the other gods long ago. Choose two of the following titan sparks. For each spark you choose, you gain its first spark benefit. Alternatively, you can choose the same spark twice; if you do, you gain its first and second benefits instead. By choosing the appropriate titan feats, you can eventually gain the third, fourth, and fifth spark benefits, as well.Aegis SparkThe spark from the god-beast within you protects you from harm. While it’s possible you possess a mystic barrier of pure titanic presence, most aegis spark titans instead have an obvious physical feature that protects them, such as a turtle shell or impenetrable feathers, scales, fur, or hide.First Spark. However you describe it, your aegis spark protects you from harm as if it were armor. While you’re not wearing armor or wielding a Shield, your Armor Class is 17, if it would otherwise be lower than that.Second Spark. As a Bonus Action, you can use your aegis actively to protect yourself from harm, by ducking into your shell, bristling out your feathers, manifesting a mystic barrier, or the like. When you do, you gain a +2 bonus to your Armor Class until the start of your next turn.Third Spark. Your aegis protects you from some of the worst blows you would take. When you would be subjected to a Critical Hit, roll a d20. On a result of 10 or higher, the Critical Hit becomes a normal hit instead.Fourth Spark. Your aegis becomes even better at preventing critical blows. A Critical Hit against you becomes a normal hit on a result of 5 or higher (instead of 10 or higher).Fifth Spark. Your aegis protects you from attacks targeting your vitals. You have Resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing, and Slashing damage.
6Energy SparkThe spark from the god-beast within you takes the form of raw element energy surging through you and capable of cataclysmic eruption. Titans with the energy spark often have a coloration indicating the energy within them and sometimes display visible manifestations of that energy, such as electricity arcing over their body or hair or feathers made of fire. According to myth, the power within energy spark titans is the precursor to abilities possessed by some modern creatures, such as a dragon’s breath.First Spark. You can release the energy from within you in the form of a breath weapon, an eye beam, or something else. When you gain this spark, choose Acid, Cold, Fire, or Lightning, and either a 15-foot Cone or a 30-foot Line that is 5 feet wide. When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of the attacks to release your energy. Each creature in the area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus your Constitution modifier and Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, a creature takes 2d4 damage of your chosen damage type. On a success, a creature takes half as much damage. The damage increases by 1d4 when you reach character levels 2 (3d4), 5 (4d4), 8 (5d4), 11 (6d4), 14 (7d4), and 17 (8d4). Once you use this ability, you can’t do so again until you finish a Short or Long Rest.Second Spark. You’re protected from your own energy to an extent. You gain Resistance to the damage type you chose for your first spark.Third Spark. When you release your energy, you can choose to concentrate the energy within you and double the area (from a 30-foot Line to a 60-foot line or a 15-foot Cone to a 30-foot Cone) and the number of damage dice. If you do, you can’t do so again until you finish a Long Rest.Fourth Spark. You’re able to release your energy in more ways than one and in a wider area. You can use either area (a Line or a Cone) when you release your energy, and the area increases to a 40-foot Line or a 20-foot Cone. When you concentrate energy, these areas double to an 80-foot Line or a 40-foot Cone.Fifth Spark. Your energy’s damage and area improve to their maximum extent. When you release energy, the damage dice increase to d6s instead of d4 (to a maximum of 8d6 at 17th level, or 16d6 when concentrating energy) and the area increases to a 60-foot Line or a 30-foot Cone (or a 120-foot Line or 60-foot Cone when concentrating energy).Mystic SparkThe spark from the god-beast within you takes the form of powerful magic formulas cascading through your body and spirit in an upwelling of ancient magic. Titans with this spark and no other sparks are among the more likely to be Medium instead of Large, though it’s still quite rare.First Spark. You learn two cantrips of your choice from the Cleric or Druid spell list. Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells (choose when you select this feat).Second Spark. Choose a 1st-level spell from the same list you selected for your first spark. You always have that spell prepared. You can cast it once without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it in that way when you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have.Third Spark. Choose one spell of 2nd-level or lower and one spell of 3rd-level or lower, both from the same list you selected for your first spark. You always have these spells prepared. You can cast each spell once without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it in that way when you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast the spells using any spell slots you have.Fourth Spark. Choose one spell of 4th-level or lower and one spell of 5th-level or lower, both from the same list you selected for your first spark. You always have these spells prepared. You can cast each spell once without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it in that way when you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have.Fifth Spark. Choose a spell of 6th-level or lower from the same list you selected for your first spark. You always have that spell prepared. You can cast it once without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it in that way when you finish a Long Rest. You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have.Razor SparkThe spark from the god-beast within you grants you a vicious unarmed attack, which is clearly visible in your features. You could have enormous jaws, sharp claws, crushing tentacles, or any other unarmed attack you can imagine.First Spark. You gain a special Unarmed Strike. This Unarmed Strike deals Bludgeoning, Piercing, or Slashing damage, chosen when you gain this spark. In addition, choose whether your Unarmed Strike deals 1d4 or 1d6 damage. If you choose 1d6, on a hit the target takes 1d6 plus your Strength modifier damage of your chosen type. If you choose 1d4, the target takes 1d4 damage, but you can use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier for the attack and damage rolls.Second Spark. The original god-beasts had more than one way to strike down their foes, and so do you. You gain a second Unarmed Strike, chosen in the same way as the one from your first spark. In addition, for each of your attacks, choose a mastery property you can use when making that Unarmed Strike.
7Third Spark. Your unarmed attacks ravage your foes. When you score a Critical Hit with one of your titan Unarmed Strikes, your attack deals an additional 1d8 damage. (This damage isn’t doubled.) The damage is normally the same type dealt by the attack, but if you also have the energy spark, you can choose to change the damage to match your energy type, and if you also have the venomous spark, you can choose to change the damage type to Poison.Fourth Spark. You can fire off spikes, teeth, or other parts of your body to attack foes at range. Each of your titan Unarmed Strikes gains the Thrown (Range 30/120) property.Fifth Spark. Your titan attacks are imbued with such a powerful spark that they’re especially difficult to resist. Your titan Unarmed Strikes deal an additional die of damage (so either 2d4 or 2d6). In addition, whenever you deal damage with a titan Unarmed Strike, it can deal your choice of Force damage or its normal damage type.Venomous SparkYour spark imbues you with an increasingly powerful poison you can apply to your most important attacks. You might have a bright coloration indicating your toxic nature or other telltale signs reminiscent of poisonous or venomous creatures in nature.First Spark. You can poison your attacks when they matter most. Once per day, you can use a Bonus Action to spit, drip blood, pop a pustule, or otherwise apply poison to your weapon or an Unarmed Strike. The poison lasts until the end of your next turn or until you hit and deal damage with the poisoned weapon. When you hit a creature with the poisoned weapon, that creature takes an additional 1d4 Poison damage and must make a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 plus your Constitution modifier plus your Proficiency Bonus) or gain the Poisoned condition for 1 minute. While Poisoned in this way, the creature must repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns. On a failed save, the creature takes 1d4 Poison damage. On a success, the creature recovers and is no longer Poisoned.Second Spark. Your poison is deadlier and replenishes more quickly. You can use your titan venom twice per day instead of once per day, and the damage die increases to 1d6.Third Spark. Your poison is even more dangerous and replenishes even more quickly. You can use your titan venom three times per day, and the damage increases to 2d6.Fourth Spark. Rather than simply dealing damage, your poison also makes your target stiff and clumsy, the better to defeat them. While the creature is Poisoned, attacks against it have Advantage, and the creature has Disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws.Fifth Spark. Your poison replenishes even more quickly and is lethal to ordinary folk. You can use your titan venom four times per day, and the damage increases to 3d6.Vital SparkYour spark grants you the nearly unlimited vitality of a god-beast. You likely appear sturdy and robust, and you might have a literal healthy glow.
8Fifth Spark. When you’re close to death, your body’s survival instincts kick in and your spark works overtime to save you. The first time each day that you are reduced to 0 Hit Points, lose an organ, or have a body part severed from your body, you enter a regenerative state that lasts for 1 minute. While the effect lasts, you regain Hit Points equal to your level at the start of each of your turns. Any of your lost body parts regrow by the end of the duration.Physical DescriptionTitans always possess some of the physical characteristics of the god-beast whose spark they carry. For instance, a titan born from an enormous island turtle might have a shell, or a titan who inherits from a massive moth could have antennae, moth-like patterns covering their body, or even wings. However, titans also usually bear some similarity to a modern species, especially if they have a mortal parent. Titans born slowly from the land itself tend to have a more monstrous appearance, and they sometimes lack the physical features borrowed from other ancestries found among other titans.Titans of all sorts tend to be larger than most other ancestries, usually somewhere around 10 feet tall. Over time, as they attune to their spark, they might grow even larger still, with some of the most powerful titans capable of attaining truly enormous sizes for short periods of time. A few titans are significantly smaller, closer to a typical humanoid species’s size. Those titans often don’t grow any larger, but they’re just as powerful, with their mystical energy condensed down into a more compact form.Titans who live among mortal ancestries, especially if they are born among them, tend to adopt similar aesthetic preferences for clothing and accessories, while those who emerge on their own might have especially distinctive tastes or simply see no need for accouterments beyond their own scales, feathers, or other natural protections.SocietyThe birth of a titan is a rare event, each unique and distinctive. And so it’s unsurprising that there isn’t a wider titan society. Titans born into mortal society often either attempt to fit into that society or escape from conformity to pursue life on their own terms. Meanwhile, titans who emerge from the world without a mortal parent often have no choice but to learn how to live life their own way. Even the most socially-minded and well-meaning of titans tend to stand out from others, which can lead First Spark. Like the god-beasts before you, you just don’t seem to die unless someone actively finishes you off. You score a success on a Death Saving Throw on a roll of 5 or higher (instead of 10 or higher).Second Spark. It takes a lot of punishment to finish you off. You die after four failed Death Saving Throws (instead of three).Third Spark. Your vital spark makes you hardier, especially after you’ve rested to replenish your energy. Increase your Hit Point maximum by an amount equal to your level. Whenever you gain a character level thereafter, your Hit Point maximum increases by an additional 1 Hit Point. In addition, whenever you finish a Long Rest, you gain Temporary Hit Points equal to half your level.Fourth Spark. While at rest, you continually recover health at a supernatural rate. Whenever you rest for 10 minutes (during which you can perform light activities such as eating or reading, but not strenuous or stressful tasks), you regain Hit Points equal to your level.
Titan AdventurersTitan adventurers often choose classes that either revel in their connection to the spark of the Progenitor within them, capitalize on their size, or both. Thus, martial classes like fighter, monk and barbarian are favorites. Titans born to a mortal have the same range of backgrounds as their parent’s species, while those who arose from the world itself often have backgrounds focused on living off the land, like farmer, guide, hermit, or wayfarer.9up the capital they need to launch expeditions and engaging in deep studies of the First Ones, their ancient habitats, and the sites of their destruction. First scions chronicle lists of ancient names lost to modern memory and dig up their secrets: was that name a Progenitor? A malevolent Enigma? Or something else? While first scions are obsessed with understanding the legacy of their ancient forebears, that doesn’t mean they all condone the First Ones’ actions or seek a return to a world ruled by gigantic god-beasts. Those who wish to bring the Progenitors back more literally are likely to be intertwined with one or more of the other clashes, especially new titans or rampagers. In much the same way, first scions aren’t necessarily antagonistic to worshipers of the new gods, as few first scions really blame them for defeating the First Ones during the Titanomachy millennia ago.First scions are among the most common titans to become adventurers, but they often have a specific type of adventure or expedition in mind: one that promises to increase their understanding of the First Ones. That being said, for those who understand their fixation, it’s easy to motivate a first scion, and they’re happy to work loyally with an adventuring group with the promise of uncovering new lore in sight.New TitansAbility Scores: Strength, Wisdom, CharismaFeat: Choose Skilled or one Titan Species featSkill Proficiencies: Insight and PersuasionTool Proficiency: Choose one kind of Gaming SetEquipment: Choose A or B: (A) Gaming Set (same as above), Backpack, Bedroll, 2 Pouches, Traveler’s Clothes, 43 GP; or (B) 50 GPNew titans are the flip side of the coin to first scions: for a typical new titan, the events thousands of years ago with the Progenitors hold little significance. Only the present matters, and the new titans must rise now.New titans typically believe they are born to lead. They are the most likely of all titans to form their own adventuring parties, organizations, or even settlements. As leaders, they run the gamut from freewheeling to strict but fair, from exploitative to self-sacrificing, just to them being ostracized. On the other hand, they might not stand out in a bad way, and if they earn the respect, trust, or fear of others, they might instead be singled out for leadership roles or in other less negative contexts.Something about titans hearkens back to ancient ancestral memories within mortal creatures, potentially exuding the primordial fear of an enormous predator, even when the titan isn’t especially physically imposing. These feelings and connections can lead to titans being more at ease in a natural environment, or one that isn’t on the cutting edge of civilization. Other titans go against the grain and force themselves into the latest trends and customs to show that they are no mere antiques or fossils of a bygone era.ClashesTitans are rare even among other rare species, and they rarely meet other titans. Even so, there are certain philosophical and social patterns commonly found among them. However, these patterns are general and broad, and inevitably any two titans have their own distinct views on the topic. Because of these differences, titans with a similar worldview inevitably clash with each other, and so the groupings have come to be called “clashes.” While no two titans will necessarily agree that their philosophy matches those of other titans, even when outside scholars might assign them to the same clash, the four broad categories of clashes are detailed below and are presented as backgrounds a player can choose during character creation. An individual titan might fall more strongly into one of the clashes or possess a mixture of several.Titan BackgroundsThe following backgrounds are particularly well suited to titan characters. If your character shares a particular affinity for titan culture, they can choose one of these backgrounds, even if they are not a titan themselves.First ScionsAbility Scores: Strength, Intelligence, CharismaFeat: Choose Skilled or one Titan Species featSkill Proficiencies: Choose two from Arcana, History, Nature, and ReligionTool Proficiency: Calligrapher’s SuppliesEquipment: Choose A or B: (A) Quarterstaff, Calligrapher’s Supplies, Book (history), Parchment (8 sheets), Robe, 8 GP; or (B) 50 GPFirst scions are titans who focus their attention on the past, fascinated by the ancient Firt Ones who came before. First scions often act as scholars or archaeologists, building
Titan SettlementsWhile titans are far too rare to form titan-only settlements, many titans, especially titans from the new titan or prodigy clashes, find themselves natural larger-than-life leaders, and so they form and lead settlements where all the other inhabitants aren’t titans. Those who live in a titan-ruled settlement might even come to venerate their leader as a local hero-deity, a situation that suits most new titans well, even if prodigies might find cause for concern.10these traits, their exceptional abilities and capacity for learning often make them stand out. Hence the name for the clash: prodigies. If they avoid being seen as an outsider or a monster, a titan might be accepted in their community and celebrated as a prodigy. Unlike most other humanoid ancestries, titans possess a divine spark and must learn quickly enough to survive on their own if they are born from the land, making everything seem effortless for them. Some prodigies revel in their success and the admiring praise of those around them, but others quickly grow bored of easy accomplishments and begin to seek out harder and deadlier challenges in order to prove themselves and grab their attention. This reckless thrill-seeking can lead to a prodigy going down as one of history’s greatest heroes, or it could end in tragedy—sometimes both at the same time. Other prodigies sometimes meet with a shocking wakeup call before things can become too bad, allowing them to reevaluate themselves and appreciate what they have before it’s too late.RampagersAbility Scores: Strength, Constitution, CharismaFeat: Choose Savage Attacker or one Titan Species featSkill Proficiencies: Athletics and IntimidationTool Proficiency: Choose one kind of Artisan’s ToolsEquipment: Choose A or B: (A) Artisan’s Tools (same as above), choose one Simple Melee Weapon, Traveler’s Clothes, 27 GP; or (B) 50 GPRampagers are at once the simplest clash as well as the ones living most true to the Progenitors who came before. They simply rampage across the land, taking what they want and need to survive and fighting back against whatever attacks them or gets in their way. Rampagers are rarely born to mortal parents, and they most often arise from the world and learn their rampaging habits as they survive on their own. Every so often, those who become outcasts from mortal society join the ranks of rampagers; in these cases, their rampage might be less of a selfish urge to survive and more of a personal vendetta against the society that rejected them. Rampagers might also bear a special animus for the new gods who slew the First Ones long ago, whether it’s an intellectual grudge or an instinctual aversion born from the spark within them. Either way, temples and other religious institutions might find themselves in the crosshairs of a rampager’s fury.A rampager who comes to understand there’s more to life than their survival or their vendetta might be convinced to change their beliefs and gravitate more toward a different clash or their own unique philosophy. When they do, they often bring a single-minded passion and overwhelming power toward their new goal.like leaders from other ancestries. But regardless of their specific leadership style, new titans feel a call to lead, akin to the principle of noblesse oblige but on a much more instinctive level—they’ve received a god-beast’s spark, and so it’s up to them to use it.New titans have big expectations, most of all for themselves but also for those around them. Those who can live up to those expectations typically earn their favor, while those who fail to do so, especially if it’s due to a lack of effort on their part and not an honest mistake, earn their scorn instead.Because new titans don’t care much about the past, they’re not often especially concerned about how the First Ones once lived, who they were, and what they stood for—rampagers are a bit more authentic in inheriting the Progenitors’ typical violent lifestyle. However, most new titans at least understand the gist of things: there were once ancient god-beasts, the new and currently active deities killed them, and titans inherited their power. This oversimplified version of the Titanomachy is still enough to cause some new titans to look suspiciously at other modern religions. Even if they don’t care about what happened to the First Ones in the past, they might consider the possibility that those same religions will turn on the new titan in the future in much the same way.ProdigiesAbility Scores: Strength, Dexterity, CharismaFeat: Choose Lucky or one Titan Species featSkill Proficiencies: Deception and StealthTool Proficiency: Disguise KitEquipment: Choose A or B: (A) Disguise Kit, 2 Pouches, Traveler’s Clothes, 22 GP; or (B) 50 GPThe most mortal-minded of titans are known as prodigies, and they’re almost always born to mortal parents rather than from the world. They often do their best to try to blend in with their local humanoid settlement, though such an attempt is often doomed to failure. Even for the few titans who are smaller and have a particularly humanoid appearance, there are always clear signs of the god-beast ancestor who gave them their unique spark. Even if they manage to conceal
11BeliefsTitans are such unique and individual beings that they don’t share a single consistent set of beliefs. That being said, they’ve each been imprinted by the spark of a Progenitor, and that can lead to some shared tendencies, in the same way that siblings or twins raised apart might nonetheless come to possess similarities.Titans as a whole typically have a belief in the individual, both in the sense of individual freedom as well as individual responsibility. Those who are powerful enough can live by their own rules, but they are also responsible for doing what they can. Those who had the power to act and chose to do nothing are cowards, and they are culpable for their inaction. Titans often have a voracious appetite and love a good meal; for that reason, they also tend to have a strong food culture and a ritualized importance around meals and the sharing of food. To many titans, anyone who can cook a beautiful and delicious meal can’t be that bad a person deep down, and the way to their hearts might well be their stomachs.Titans have religious tendencies that run against society’s norms. While a few might worship the same deities as their mortal parents, most hold different views. Many titans aren’t religious at all, and those who do follow religion might worship a long-dead First One or even the potential of the tiny divine spark within themselves.Popular Edicts live free and true to yourself, use your power to create the world you want to see, indulge in a good mealPopular Anathemas allow others to define you, fail to act on your beliefs when you can, bite the hand that feeds you Titan FeatsThe following feats are available to titan characters.1ST LEVELAegis of 1,000 WhispersTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Titan species, Aegis spark)Your aegis whispers hidden messages to you, especially when you’re asleep or on the edge of consciousness, sending you glimpses that teach you to innately understand how to defend yourself and move around in combat using it to its full potential. While you’re not wearing armor or wielding a Shield, your Armor Class is 19 (instead of 17), if it would otherwise be lower than that.Aroma of Prey Upon the WindTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Titan species)You can smell keenly enough to pinpoint other creatures, as well as other sources of odors. You gain the following benefits.Keen Smell. You have Advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell. In addition, you can use the Perception skill in place of Survival to follow tracks.Skill Proficiency. You gain proficiency in the Perception skill.Awaken Spark From Dreaming DepthsTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Titan species)You awaken a completely new spark that was dreaming deep within you, revealing a hidden depth to the god-beast progenitor whose power you inherited. You gain the following benefits.First Spark. You gain the first spark benefit of a titan spark you don’t already possess.Second Spark. You gain the second spark benefit of the first spark you chose when you selected this feat.
12Eyes of Primordial DarknessTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Titan species)Whether your god-beast progenitor arose from underground, the lightless depths of the ocean, or the heart of a dense jungle, you don’t need light to see. You gain the following benefits.Darkvision. You have Darkvision with a range of 60 feet.Skill Proficiency. You gain proficiency in the Perception skill.Titan LoreTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Titan species)Either from a strange ancestral memory you unearthed or the fruit of deep research into ancient history, you’ve learned about your origins and the god-beasts that came before you. You gain the following benefits.Skill Proficiency. You gain proficiency in your choice of the Athletics or Intimidation skill, as well as your choice of the History, Nature, or Religion skill.Reliable Lore. When you make an Intelligence (History, Nature, or Religion) check to recall information about titans, you can treat a d20 roll of 9 or lower as a 10. In addition, on a successful check you might know more information about the subject than normal, at the GM’s discretion.Wings of Forgotten EonsTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Titan species)Your body has always twitched a bit somewhere along your back or on another spot that might hold wings, as if you once knew how to fly long ago and somehow forgot. But you can dive through those forgotten eons and manifest wings that you can use in brief spurts. You gain the following benefits.Arrest Fall. When you fall, you can take a Reaction to reduce the damage you take from the fall by an amount equal to twice your character level.Manifest Wings. You can use a Bonus Action to gain a Fly Speed equal to half your Speed until the end of your turn. If you’re flying and don’t end your turn on a solid surface, you fall.4TH LEVELCloak in Guise of Mortal FleshTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 4+, Titan species)Your connection to your mortal parent runs deeper than most titans, granting you the benefits of that mortal species, in addition to being a titan. Choose a species other than titan. You gain the species traits of that species (not including ability score increases, if any). If your two species would result in conflicting benefits, the GM determines whether to allow the combination and what the result will be.Crashing Footfalls Tremorand ShakeTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 4+, Titan species)You can use an action to slam your foot onto the ground and create a shockwave, allowing you to trip a distant creature. One creature you can see within 60 feet of you must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus your Strength modifier and Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, the creature gains the Prone condition. Once you use this feat, you can’t do so again until you finish a Short or Long Rest.Echoes of the Riotous EarthTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 4+, Titan species)You can hear the echoes trembling through the earth. You gain Tremorsense with a range of 5 feet times your Proficiency Bonus.Surging Strength Fractures MemoriesTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 4+, Titan species)Physical objects serve as mementos for most mortal creatures, but your primordial strength allows you to easily break those physical vessels and everything they represent. You gain a bonus to the damage rolls of melee weapon attacks you make against objects and constructs. This bonus is equal to your Proficiency Bonus.
The Titanomachy in MythologyIn Greek mythology, the Titanomachy is a decade-long battle between the Olympian deities, under Zeus, and the prior generation of deities, the titans, under Kronos (not to be confused with the similarly-named Khronos). Most surviving art from the Titanomachy depicts both the Olympian deities and the titans as roughly human-like in their overall form, but modern depictions often attribute a more monstrous or primal appearance to the titans, even though those were normally associated with different sets of divine beings in Greek mythology. For instance, the hundred-handed hekatonkheires were originally members of the gigantes, or giants, while the truly primordial deities, the protogenoi (meaning “Firstborn”), were the generation in Greek mythology before Kronos and the titans (and just to make it a bit more confusing, this generation included Khronos, the protogenos of time). For the Year of Titans, we decided to play with that distinction and create a middle ground: instead of the idea that the protogenoi were more inhuman and both the titans and new gods were more anthropomorphic like in the Classical depictions, we looked at a progression where the First Ones were enormous god-beast kaiju, the newer deities of the Balance are extremely anthropomorphic, and then the titans were descendants of the First Ones that served as more of a middle ground, somewhere on the scale between fully monstrous and more humanlike in appearance. This allows you to choose your titan’s unique appearance, either staying in the middle or leaning towards one side or the other. This allows you to create a titan matching any of the various depictions you choose!13Twin Spark Severs the DawnTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 4+, Titan species)The power of a second type of spark swirls within you, causing you to experience something titans sometimes call a “severed dawn,” where you awaken and briefly experience two consciousnesses at once. You gain the following benefits.Ability Score Increase. Increase your highest or second-highest ability score by 1, to a maximum of 20.Twin Spark. Either choose a titan spark you don’t already possess and gain its first spark benefit or choose a titan spark you already possess and gain its second spark benefit. You can’t gain a third or greater spark benefit using this feat.Unearth Forgotten EonsTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 4+, Wings of Forgotten Eons feat)You dig through the forgotten eons into those strange and misty memories, unearthing more of the secrets of flight. The Fly Speed you gain from Wings of Forgotten Eons is equal to your Speed (instead of half your Speed).8TH LEVELCrack the Earth With Titan’s PassageTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 8+, Titan species)You can use an action to move up to twice your Speed. The ground in any space you leave during this movement becomes Difficult Terrain for 1 minute.Emerge From Civilization’s ChrysalisTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 8+, Titan species)The chains of civilization hold back the limited power of the god-beasts within you, and by shattering them, you can emerge from your chrysalis and grow much larger for a time. You can use an action to grow to Huge size. This transformation lasts for 10 minutes or until you use a Bonus Action to return to your true form. While Huge, your form grows more monstrous-looking and reminiscent of your god-beast progenitor. Your equipment grows with you, but it returns to its normal size if removed or dropped. Your reach increases from 5 feet to 10 feet (or from 10 feet to 15 feet if you have the Reach Across the Chasm of Time feat), you gain a +2 bonus to the damage rolls of melee weapon attacks, and you have Advantage on Charisma (Intimidation) checks. If you have the Tower Above and Shatter the Sky feat, you instead become Gargantuan and your reach increases from 10 feet to 15 feet.Once you use this feat, you can’t do so again until you finish a Long Rest.Transcend Forgotten EonsTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 8+, Unearth Forgotten Eons feat)You’ve dug deep through the forgotten eons and reached the core, transcending the intervening time as if it was nothing to restore the power of flight locked within you. You gain a Fly Speed equal to your Speed at all times.Triune Spark Beholds theSlumbering MajestyTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 8+, Titan species)You catch a glimpse of a slumbering majesty deep within you, more powerful than you had come to imagine before. This grants your spark a new aspect or allows you to plumb its deeper depths. You gain the following benefits.Ability Score Increase. Increase your highest or second-highest ability score by 1, to a maximum of 20.Triune Spark. Choose a titan spark you don’t already possess and gain its first spark benefit. Alternatively, choose a titan spark you already possess and gain its second spark benefit, or its third spark benefit if you already possess the first and second benefits. You can’t gain a fourth or greater spark benefit using this feat.12TH LEVELGrasping Jaws Devour the SunTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 12+, Titan species)While you are grappling a creature at least two sizes smaller than you, you can use an action to open your mouth impossibly wide and
Titans and First Ones on AlacarWhile the titans in this book can work in any setting that allows room for Old Gods that were defeated long ago, the specifics of the First Ones as kaiju-sized god-beasts are a foundational mythology for the world of Alacar, which is unique to the line of Battlezoo products. It’s easy to use titans in your game no matter what, but if you’re curious to learn more details about these myths and how they played out in Alacar (and what became of the dragon deity Talir who defeated the First Ones), you can check out World of Battlezoo: Indigo Isles. In summary, the First Ones were rampaging across the world long ago, when an interloping pair of alien deities named Tovah and Lilin decided to intercede and protect the weaker mortals living on the planet. They birthed the dragon deity Talir, who devoured the First Ones in an all-out war, laying eggs that gave birth to the varies heritages of dragons from the magical power they gained by devouring the god-beasts. But due to mortal fear, Tovah and Lilin turned against Talir.14swallow the creature whole, trapping them in your gullet where no light can reach, just as the legendary god-beast was said to have devoured the sun itself during the first solar eclipse. The Grappled creature must make its choice of a Strength or Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus your Strength modifier and Proficiency Bonus). On a failed save, the grapple ends and the creature is swallowed. While swallowed, the creature is Blinded and Restrained, and it has Total Cover against attacks and other effects outside you. You can have only one creature swallowed at a time.As an action, the swallowed creature can make a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (DC 8 plus your Strength modifier and Proficiency Bonus). On a success, the creature escapes your stomach, landing prone in an unoccupied space of its choice within 5 feet of you. Herald the Reprise of MetamorphosisTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 12+, Emerge from Civilization’s Chrysalis feat)Civilization can’t hold you back any longer. You can use your Emerge from Civilization’s Chrysalis again after a Short Rest (instead of after a Long Rest).Reach Across the Chasm of TimeTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 12+, Titan species, Medium size)You reach across time’s threshold to the era of the ancient godbeasts, drawing forth their own overbearing statue and long limbs to extend your reach. You become Large, your reach increases to 10 feet, and you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with melee weapon attacks. If you later take the Tower Above and Shatter the Sky feat, you lose the benefits of this feat but can immediately trade the feat for the Ability Score Improvement feat or a different Titan Species Feat with a prerequisite of Level 12+ or lower.Revive Forgotten EonsTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 12+, Transcend Forgotten Eons)You use your connection across the eons to draw forth further secrets of flight and those hidden beneath, and revive them within your body and spirit. The Fly Speed granted by your Transcend Forgotten Eons feat increases to 60 feet.Tetrad Spark Trespasses theTowering HeightsTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 12+, Titan species)You’ve discovered something enormous emerging from a dizzying depth within you, soaring above like a towering mountain you must climb to reach your full potential. In so doing, you grant your spark a new aspect or reach ever-greater heights. You gain the following benefits.Ability Score Increase. Increase your highest or second-highest ability score by 1, to a maximum of 20.Tetrad Spark. Either choose a titan spark you don’t already possess and gain its first spark benefit or choose a titan spark you already possess and gain its second spark benefit, its third spark benefit if you already possess the first and second benefits, or its fourth spark benefit if you already possess the first, second, and third benefits. You can’t gain a fifth spark benefit using this feat.16TH LEVELFivefold Spark Ascends the Ancient ThroneTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 16+, Titan species)As you reach the crest of the slumbering god-beast within you, you ascend their throne and take their crown for yourself. You gain the following benefits.Ability Score Increase. Increase your highest or second-highest ability score by 1, to a maximum of 20.Fivefold Spark. Choose a titan spark you don’t already possess and gain its first spark benefit. Alternatively, choose a titan spark you already possess and gain its second spark benefit, its third spark benefit if you already possess the first and second benefits, its fourth spark benefit if you already possess the first, second, and third benefits, or its fifth spark benefit if you possess all four of the others.Quake the Earth and BringTheir Works to RuinTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 16+, Titan species)Drawing on your size and power, you can use an action to create a substantial earthquake surrounding you. This has the effect of an earthquake spell in a 60-foot Emanation centered on you (instead of a 100-foot-radius circle centered on a point within 500 feet of you). The DC of all savings throws for the effect is 8 plus your Strength modifier and Proficiency Bonus. You are immune to the effects of your own earthquake.Once you use this feat, you can’t do so again until you finish a Long Rest.
15Rampage Through Multitudesand Trample HopeTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 16+, Titan species)You can call forth the power of the rampaging god-beasts to crush and trample all who stand against you, leaving the situation hopeless for your foes. You can use an action to move up to twice your Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks. During this movement, you can move through other creatures’ spaces. Each time you move into a creature’s space, that creature takes 8d8 Bludgeoning damage, or half as much damage with a successful Dexterity saving throw (DC 8 plus your Strength modifier and Proficiency Bonus). A creature smaller than you that fails the saving throw also gains the Prone condition. You can’t trample the same creature more than once during this movement.Tower Above and Shatter the SkyTitan Species Feat (Prerequisite: Level 16+, Titan species)You draw forth more of your ancestral god-beast’s size, growing so big that smaller mortal buildings can’t contain you, as you reach upward to shatter the sky. You become Huge, your reach increases to 10 feet, and you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with melee weapon attacks.
