THE WHITE PARTY Issue 108 | Celebrity | 9

Exclusive photograpic coverage and report by Ken and Angela Ross IF IT’S NOT IN

Celebrity

- IT DIDN’T HAPPEN

White is the thing – no doubt about it – and on a date in early June if you had simply scrawled in your diary the words
‘White Party’ then that was enough! For ‘white Party’ in the early season straightforwardly means the Islands beach
clubs are opening!
It means beach summer is here and this is the official launch-pad for the jet setters, the island elite, high-end visitors
and the beautiful night people to start their partying – its now officially white party time – welcome to the start of
another hectic season!
So on this particular evening, Nikki’s night, one thousand of Mallorca’s finest party-goers, all donned their very best
traditional white garbs and gathered together.
We arrived and like others, were soon customarily tagged and with wristbands firmly in place we are all directed
through our appropriate entrances – in our case VIP.
As we enter we were greeted by a huge round of applause and cheers from the Nikki staff who had formed a corridor
of honour. This can be terribly embarrassing but it is all very American and is in good fun and as we watched, it is
easy to see it is actually very much appreciated by other guests entering the special dining and VIP areas.
Last year at one of the many white parties, we talked to one of the guests who was at the stage of buying his second
bottle of ‘extremely expensive’ Champagne, asking his feelings and motivation for this, remembering this is not
exactly the ‘cheapest night out’ you will ever have in your life, he explained his simple philosophy. “When I walk in
to these white parties I feel like a millionaire and that’s how I behave. Crazy I know, but doing it just now and then,
is amazing and I enjoy every single minute of it.”
And you know what, this year again nothing had changed – all of the people at these white parties dressed and acted
like millionaires (although we suspect a good number actually were) – the enjoyment amongst the crowds was huge
- the ladies were gorgeous, the fashions were incredible and every single person was there to enjoy themselves.
At Nikki Beach this year the theme was ‘Circus’ and all the staff were dressed appropriately – amazing dancers,
showgirls and entertainers.
Tearing ourselves away from the sky VIP balcony (overlooking the entire party) we moved towards one of the bars
and found there that not everyone wanted to be a millionaire, most had simply purchased a general entrance ticket
(still expensive) and were enjoying themselves by just having a drink and watching everything going on around them,
,the gorgeous dancers, the live music and DJ’s, the entertainment plus of course the biggest draw of the evening – the
glamorous guests themselves!
If you love people watching, a white party is definitely the place to be on party nights – as our exclusive photo
coverage at Nikki Beach shows.

Something slightly more unusual for Diners this season when
one of the top Puerto Portals restaurants ‘Spoon’ held another
of their hugely popular fashion shows.
The casual summer fashions were presented by Billy’s
Boutique (Puerto Portals), gaining praise with repeated
rounds of applause from diners.
Fashions for the beach, around the pool or for that more
sophisticated evening meal were presented by several
charming professional models.
Light music enhanced the evening, allowing diners to enjoy
that little something extra special, this of course complimented
the superb food served by the restaurant.
Boutique owner Heidi Luebke said that she was pleased
with the presentation and assured guests that this would now
become a regular event.

Huge Palma fashion
show gives platform
for the islands new
talent to present their
latest creations!

Exclusive photographic coverage & report by Ken and Angela Ross

MALLORCA DESIGN DAY

On one of the warmest evenings of the year, the Moll Vell was the perfect setting for a gala ‘Cat-walk Fashion
Show’.
Set against the backdrop of magnificent La Seu Cathedral and by to the quayside with its shining white super yachts,
several hundred specially invited guests mingled. Here in the cordoned-off area at the base of the giant steps of The
Milla de Oro restaurant complex, several seating areas had been arranged with beverage distributors sponsoring the
free bars.
Certainly you could feel the fashion theme throughout with many guests trying (and probably succeeding) to out-do
the fashion presentations.
It was an evening where the designers mixed with family and friends, there to support their favourite - and no doubt
many more there to support their daughters who were modelling the fashions.
The occasion was the opportunity for six of the islands designers to show and be judged on their creations – the
winner being Pilar Sarmiento for his unusual printed assemblies.
Another contender was Anna Iranzo who’s creations of shinny red trouser and tops were said to have been inspired
by Coca Cola (one of the sponsors).
Although well received by the audience, some commented that it was a little towards ‘Art School fashion’ and not
as main stream or as serious a fashionista showing as it could have been. Although who knows? Possibly these are
the designers of the future, the new big brand names whose designs we may all be eagerly queuing up to purchase
- come the next season.
Overall it was a quite pleasant evening, marred slightly we felt by the chaos amongst the attending administrative
staff themselves. Rarely have we seen so many ‘staff’ badges on so many people, who seemingly spent the evening
gathering to ask each other questions or holding their hands in the air in frustration?
Never the less, an appreciative audience enjoyed the evening, it was an opportunity to socialise, show innovative
fashion trends, which no doubt took a great amount of effort, pre-organisation and work contributed by Ajuntament
de Palma – well done!

BOOM BOOM FOR BECKER

Lilly and Boris dining in Puerto Portals
World Champion Tennis Player, a tennis court legend, the youngest player to ever win Wimbledon and the millionaire
heartthrob who attracted more female television viewers than any other tennis star in history – Boris Becker, has been
declared officially bankrupt!
The three times Wimbledon champion, famously nicknamed ‘Boom Boom’ because of his powerful tennis serve
pleaded unsuccessfully with bankruptcy court officials for one months delay in order for him to settle his three and a
quarter million pound debt to a private bank (Arbuthnot Latham & Co).
Becker’s lawyers insist he has the means to pay the debt by remortgaging his 62 acre estate in Mallorca.
Becker has been a popular figure on the island although has had several run-ins with the Spanish Courts in recent
years. In 2012 a Spanish court judge ordered Beckers property in Majorca to be auctioned to pay a debt of quarter
of a million pounds, which he owed a local landscape gardening company. In a separate civil court hearing, also in
Palma, a judge ordered him to hand a further third of a million pounds to a local building firm that complained that
bills for carpentry, electrical and plumbing jobs, and the laying of a basketball court, also went unpaid.
Yet Becker had in his younger years amassed a fortune of tens of millions of pounds after first winning Wimbledon
aged 17. But it was his action off the tennis court that has no doubt left him millions in debt and facing the prospect of

Parkinson’s Group amalgamate - ‘Together They Are Stronger’

Not only is Ivan Lythgoe one of the most popular figures in and around Calvia, he also suffers from Parkinson’s
disease which is why he formed the organisation ‘Parkinson Support group Mallorca’.
This month Ivan successfully made the challenging task of joining forces with the ‘Parkinson’s Association of the
Balearics’.
Ivan’s motivation is to increase the awareness of the early symptoms of Parkinson’s and to educate suffers as to the
different ways it can be fought. Sadly there is as yet no cure, it remains a disease that cannot be healed but it is a
disease that can be held back.
Whilst the medical profession are constantly searching for and developing new treatments, one of the main aspects
of fighting the disease is constant exercise.
From our own knowledge of Ivan, he is a perfect example of a man who will not give in. He is active, charismatic and
with the support of his amazing wife Chris, lives life to the full. There are never complaints; in fact he is usually the
first man to enquire on the health of others - a true ‘trooper’ of extraordinary strength and character.

TOGETHER THEY ARE STRONGER
By amalgamating together, the organisation hopes to further more awareness and provide more help and advice to
sufferers. With the new motto of their joint organisation being ‘Together they are Stronger’ they are now planning
more events to not only raise funds but to bring together sufferers and their family and friends.
There first actions of this joint venture will be towards the start-up of a multi-lingual drop-in centre based at Son
Espases Hospital and they are now looking for volunteers who can offer a few hours a week to help.
