IT’S BEEN ALL WHITE THIS SUMMER

Nikki Beach seems the first – and everyone else follows through –
its the ‘Summer All White Parties’ - welcome to enjoying summer!
You can have any diary or calendar in the world, but here, it’s the
beach clubs that say when its summer – the rush for the summer
clothes, the latest style in beach outfits, the newest party wear and
the best (or in the case of the ladies), the skimpiest evening attire.

THE PREPARATION
Of course for our first forage for our white outfit we all look for
last years attire, into the abyss of our previous summers clothing,
we dig deep into our wardrobes, throwing away with seasonal
contempt the dark browns and blacks that have comforted us so
well over the recent winter months.
This, the search we swore last season would be without hindrance,
the pure white ensemble that we promised ourselves we would
have cleaned and put away neatly in a special place, ready for this
new summer showing – only to find it on the floor at the back of
the wardrobe, crumpled, now off-white, out-dated and no longer
fit for purpose!
Still not to worry, there are the shops with their ever stylish
offerings of white – where you meet everyone else you know who
is buying the same colour for the same event.

THE GATHERING

Always around a pool, always expensive (of course) and always
terribly on show – they gather as do the wildebeests in Africa, as
though coming together ready to migrate in their thousands to some
distant greener land – although in the case of our beautiful party
people, they are not moving anywhere, at least not very far from the
bar anyway!
The head wildebeests have booked tables, or even a whole section
with private resting places and its own unique watering hole (with
subservient-ees at their beck-and-call to fetch more refreshment and
food when needed). And so the gathering progresses – the unusual
surrounds us, entertainment, fantastic music, artists dressed in
amazing costumes – and all accompanied by glamorous DJ’s with
the now obligatory solo saxophonists or electric violin artists and
amazing sexy dancers.
For revellers, a quickly acquired suntan (or last minute spray), this
with the all white apparel is complimentary to everyone – job done.
Beautiful look achieved, they arrive - next - the strategy!

Issue 112 | Celebrity | 9
THE EXPERIENCE

Once established, all stand in their own guarded position, glass in hand
they pose – for these is the all important ‘to be seen at’ parties – forget
about the enjoyment for an hour or two – this is all about being there.
As the clock ticks, the giant bottles of bubbly (for those further up the
food chain) pop their corks, or (for those of lesser stature) the beer
bottle caps are prised off – the party begins. Later, after all the posing is
complete, the herd movement and mingling begins. Everyone is relaxed
and content, able to now interact with their nearby equals – each in their
own safely guarded corral, the status-quo and elitism being respected.
There can be no wandering between the social levels of this herd, each
respecting each other’s status of the watering hole and prime grazing
areas, (except possibly for the more beautiful females of the species who
are waved through, barriers lifted, grazing areas eagerly shared).
Morning light threatens, the herd must move on, the interaction has been
completed, mating rituals respected and now it must divide once again,
for each to return to their own home pastures – a great evening, great
entertainment and another memorable Nikki event – after all it was a
white party – and if it’s a white party – then we are enjoying summer!

THE JACKSONS

The white suits may have gone, so possibly has forty plus years of their youth, but on stage the four original
family members still performing (Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Marlon) had a packed audience on their feet dancing
from the moment they walked on stage.
As part of the Port Adriano Music Festival, the Jacksons kicked-off their ‘50th Anniversary Tour’ here in Mallorca
– the port rocked to the vibes and the beat of one of the coolest (and probably most famous) ‘family super band’
in the world.
Inside the specially built concert stadium, whether the fans purchased top VIP table seats or way-at-the-back
platform seats – many of the seats were soon abandoned as people surged into the aisles or bar areas to get on
their feet and dance to the music the Jacksons were beating out non-stop – and if their fans couldn’t get to the
isles, they just stood up and danced at their tables throughout the night. And if you couldn’t get into the stadium,
no problem! We counted over a hundred fans who soon found many vantage points around the stadium where
they could still see and hear the group – on top of walls, high areas in the port that overlooked the stadium, even
on top of cars and vans – nobody was going to miss the show.
On stage with a giant video screen displaying past images interacted with the group throughout their performance,
the fever pitch reached higher and higher as they went through a resume of all their favourites – ‘ABC’, ‘I Want
You Back’, ‘Rocking Robin’ and as they sang – ‘I’ll Be There’– all arms were raised in the air with hands waving
to the sky.
If there was any doubts whether the group of four could carry off the show, the loyal fans soon put that aside
– their fans had gathered at the port, packed the stadium and when the time arrived, as the Jacksons walked on
stage they were met by an amazing enthusiastic greeting of applause, whistles and cheers– from then on it was
the Jacksons night! As the fans heard the first bars of their opening number ‘Can You Feel it’, at first there was a
stunned silence and then the whole of open air auditorium erupted as people leapt to their feet all singing at the
top of their voices to a tune that came straight from their hearts.

This was just the beginning - and the night just kept getting better and better
We had met the group on the previous afternoon over coffee and a few glasses of chilled wine (well. OK! A few
cocktails as well). There was no grandeur amongst the guys, none of the ‘I’m a Star’ palaver that we sometimes
get, they were straight forward, even having a great sense of humour. We did have slight concerns about the show,
they’re not kids any more. But that next evening - they were the Jacksons we remembered - as did hundreds and
hundreds of their devoted fans - The Jacksons are back!

AND ALL HAPPINESS WEDDING

A beautiful summers day and a particularly glamorous
guest list from which over one hundred and ten people
had been invited from all over Europe and the United
States to attend the very special event of what was to
later be described as the perfect wedding.
Christofer Bengtsson and his stunning Bride Emelie
enjoyed a truly beguiling wedding ceremony where
guests had made the event even more stylish by wearing
an amazing collection of both sophisticated and chic
designer fashions. It really was a glamorous gathering,
with everyone joining together with friends and family
to enjoy this magical moment. Guests basked in the
sunshine sipping chilled Champagne, followed by the
delightful outdoor wedding ceremony, then a second
reception, followed by the alfresco formal dinner.
Amazing music (The Syndicate) enhanced the occasion,
which allowed guests to enjoy a now more relaxed and
surreal atmosphere, allowing everyone to savour the
evening and reflect on what had been a truly beautiful
and romantic day.

In less than an eighteen month period we has seen the passing of the three most

Hefner married Playmate, Crystal Harris. Of course this whole venture was risky to say the least. Previous
to Hefner’s venture no one had ever tried producing a publication
targeted mainly for men in the mainstream magazine market.
For his first issue Hefner did admittedly have one clever ace up his
sleeve, months prior, for only a few hundred dollars, Hefner had
successfully purchased the copyright for a set of nude photographs,
originally commissioned for a small unknown calendar some
five years earlier. The calendar which had never been particularly
circulated or prominently featured had contained photographs of a
then struggling actress, totally unknown at the time but who was
about to become one of the world’s major global movie stars –
America was about to get a taste of its first nude centrefold magazine
featuring the girl who by now the whole planet was in love with -
Marilyn Monroe!
The magazine was printed, although interestingly in those early days
there was no sign of the now famous black and white Bunny Logo,
this would follow later, with this first issue being embarrassingly
crude compared to Playboy’s now glossy sophisticated magazine.
Although Hefner had been unsure of how this first publication
would be received, he decided to print fifty four thousand copies
(financially that was the biggest print run Hefner could afford) – the
magazine sold out within three days!
Playboy had arrived, yet the world still had to wait for another seven
years before the first actual Playboy Club opened.
By 1959 the magazine was going from strength to strength, with some
of the worlds most beautiful stars and models queuing up to be on the
cover and centrefold of Playboy. During that year the magazine also
ran a general article about an exclusive set of nightclubs called the
‘Gaslight Club’, where their clients were served by waitresses who
wore sexy silk Victorian style corsets. Inspired by the male readers
enthusiastic reactions to this article it was Hefner’s then unknown
promotions director, Victor Lownes, who pushed and persuaded
Hefner to open the first ‘Playboy Club’.
Although there are several stories about the conception of the Bunny
look, it is generally agreed by most that it was Victor Lownes who
was ultimately responsible for the iconic look of the waitresses,
and thereafter the world-wide success of the Playboy club. Lownes
and his then girlfriend Ilsa Taurin took the now-famous magazines
‘playboy rabbit mascot’ (which Hefner had copied from his college
days when visiting a bar called Bunny’s Tavern) as inspiration for
the Playboy waitress look. Hefner initially turned down the Bunny
idea, that is until a few days later when Lownes walked back in to
Hefner’s office with his girlfriend wearing the now legendary one
piece satin costume, bow tie, white cuffs, fluffy tail and bunny ears
- job done - the ‘Bunny Suit’ was born!
The Playboy Bunny was unveiled at the opening of Playboy’s first
club on February 29th, 1960. Of course this was something so
startlingly new it received worldwide publicity. The timing was
perfect for a naughty-but-nice string of garish saloons that catered
to the sexual fantasies of the American male.
So successful was this club in Chicago that within just two years,
over twenty Playboy Clubs had been opened throughout America,
with others in Canada, Europe and even Japan, followed with
Playboy Club Resorts opening in New Jersey and in Jamaica.
Everything was perfect for two decades until the obvious social
changes in time and style came into play. Playboy clients were no
longer content with the image of passion, they wanted to experience

it themselves. They wanted clubs where they could Issue 112 | Celebrity | 29

the local Burger Bars were represented, having their very own secret versions of the perfect burger sampled by the
enthusiastic crowds. Such was the penchant for this meal in a bun that there were constant queues of over twenty at each
of the 13 burger bars, the staff working flat out to keep up with demand. With entertainment and awards and prizes, it was a
great day out for everyone.

IBEROSTAR VIP TASTING R

Celebrity Magazine was invited to an exclusive presentation and VIP tasting, prepared by the acclaimed José
Gordón at the Astir Restaurant in the magnificent setting in the ‘Iberostar Grand Portal Nous Hotel’, one of the
islands most luxurious venues which boasts some of the most stunning sea views.
This is the hotels second season on the island of Mallorca, serving the finest cuts of meat from Bodega El Capricho
in León, the restaurant also offers a truly delicious selection of fresh fish and shellfish
The highlights of the menu on the night of our visit included a truly outstanding selection of ox and beef from
the Bodega El Capricho, acclaimed by various food critics from around the world as “the world’s best meat”. The
meat is sourced from Jiménez de Jamuz, a small borough situated close to La Bañeza where
José Gordón raises oxen of various breeds. The Astir Restaurant gives visitors to Majorca the
chance to sample this delicious speciality beef sirloin and beef and ox rib eye steaks from the
establishment founded by Gordón more than 20 years ago in León. The meat is char-grilled by a
team actually trained at the Bodega El Capricho, and here is served with potatoes, salad, purée or
vegetables which are also char-grilled.
Despite slight variations between the lunch and dinner menus, both feature a number of starters
created for sharing, such as ‘El Capricho’ (ox sirloin carpaccio), Es Trenc salt, virgin olive oil,
Sóller prawns on a sea of gazpacho with Majorcan flavours or León air-dried cecina beef.

There is nothing ordinaire about the lunchtime menu which includes Moist
European Lobster Rice, salads, a selection of pasta dishes and in the ‘Between Slices’ section
of the menu you will find a selection of the chef’s very own unusual Club sandwiches. You
can also choose roast Duck, Majorcan Lamb or Mediterranean fish fresh from the market.
The dinner menu has been tailored for evening dining. Besides the specialities of European
lobster salad, and ox rump tartar, diners can also choose from a range of seafood dishes a
selection of meat dishes and goose foie gras with regional wines, and naturally the authentic
specialities of this restaurant: the exclusive cuts of meat from Bodega El Capricho. We were
privileged to have tasted each of these and have to report that they were delightful and well
worth all the time and patience that had been taken to prepare them.
In addition to the superb meat, the culinary offer at the Astir, entrusted to the hotel’s chef, Iván Crespo, has been
created as a tribute to Majorca’s rich gastronomic history and culture. Indeed, only the very best market ingredients
are used, sourced from local producers who skilfully infuse their products with the island’s delicious flavours.
And all paired with a wide range of magnificent wines: with more than a hundred to choose from, they round off
the dishes to perfection. The list is based mainly on unique wines from small scale producers.
As in the rest of the hotel, the restaurant décor is the work of leading Dutch designer Marcel Wanders, internationally
acclaimed for his iconic interiors. In the dining room, the vaulted ceiling and the cement tiled floor create the
perfect setting in which to relax. The Champagne Bar is located on the restaurant terrace, featuring the bespoke
‘Tree of Life’ which Wanders created especially for a venue that serves the finest selection of champagnes in a
prime seafront location.
