River information

The Avon is managed by the Avon Navigation Trust and the Severn is managed by the Canal and River Trust. Both organisations
require boaters to purchase a license for the use of the river which pays for the general upkeep of the navigation and locks.

Further license information can be found by visiting
www.avonnavigationtrust.org and www.canalrivertrust.org.uk/boating
Before venturing out on the river, it is advisable to consider water levels. The river level is normally measured as a height above a
normal summer level (NSL).

26

Visit www.farsondigitalwatercams.com/live-webcams/central/Avon-(Central)/Avon-Lock-Severn-Level/

The Avon Navigation Trust has easy to read gauges along the river including one here at the marina;

RED Danger - stop and moor your boat.

ORANGE Increased current, proceed with caution.

GREEN Normal navigable level.

The ultimate responsibility for deciding whether to take a boat out lies with the skipper but the gauges should help you make an

informed decision. You can also monitor river levels by viewing the River Watch webcams on the Avon Navigation Trust’s website,

and by following the link on our website to the Environment Agency’s own river gauge.

27

Locks

There are seventeen locks between Tewkesbury
and Stratford. They are normally operated
manually by boaters and the paddle gear accepts
the small 1 inch taper, or ‘Northwich’ type lock key or
windlass. The Avon lock at Tewkesbury is manned by a
lock keeper between Easter and November. All locks on
the Severn are manned.

If you have not operated locks before, take
your time and if you are unsure ask another
boater - they will be happy to help. It is also
worth taking time to visit Tewkesbury
(Avon) lock to watch the lock keeper
in action.

28

Locking procedure

Locking up to higher level

Secure lines at bow and stern but be prepared to take in the slack as the boat rises.
Close the lock gates and check that the paddles are lowered, or closed.
Go to the top gates and operate the rack gearing to raise the paddles. Open them
a little way at first and pause; the turbulence from too much water entering the
chamber can force boats off the lock side, or make them surge up and down
and hit the gates.
Once the water level has risen a little, open the paddles fully.
On Rivers, leave the gates OPEN when you leave, and all paddles
CLOSED. On Canals, always leave the gates CLOSED.
When closing the paddles, please wind them down slowly; pushing down the
rack with your hands causes shock loading and can damage the gear
and equipment.

Locking to a lower level

Follow the same procedure when locking to a lower level but the boat crews
MUST NOT make fast their lines, but should pay them out by hand as the water level
in the lock drops.
Vessels should keep clear of the cill below the top gates to avoid being caught up on
their sterngear. Operators of the paddles on the bottom gates must be vigilant, and close
them immediately if a vessel gets into difficulties.
